- "Gumband". "Buggy". "Slippy". "Jumbo".
All these words and many, many more have unique meanings in the Pittsburgh dialect. But how many players could serve as translators to help the outside world understand Pittsburghers? Spoiler: not many.

With Gumband, Kahun was actually right. He just didn't know the english word for "Gummiband" was rubberband.
Yesss was wondering why he got it as wrong 😂
Letang’s “ apparently I didn’t live in the right city for 15 years” comment had me in tears lol
"gummi band" was right. Gummi is German for rubber.
Love that Crosby actually knew a lot of these. I don’t know it was nice to see he probably found these out over the years and cares. Knew Lafferty would be good at this!!
I knew most of them and I am from Hamilton Ont. We use a lot up here.
Yah Lafferty only grew up an hour away from Pittsburgh my brother played hockey against him in high school hes a really good kid
He'd been in Pittsburgh for a decade and a half by then, so he had some time to catch a few terms here and there lol. Speaking of, I feel fortunate that so many Pens/Steelers stars have been career-longers.
Malkin saying “what’s word?” Sent me
John Liotti your a rangers fan you have 1 more like also your my fav person on the internet now
Malkin you get a pass lol
"Had to worsh myself after I fell into the jaggerbush down by the crick because it was slippy aht" Not bad for a Brit eh?!
Lmao
That's a beautiful thing
As a Pittsburgh native, I can confirm, not bad.
As a kid I think I actually said this
What is “aht”? I’m failing to put it together with context clues.
this, combined with crosby's return and the huge win, made my day!
Diana Ludwik ikr plus geno almost got a hat trick
“Sprinkles”
“Sprinkles”
“Subway”
😂
Letang's "apparently I didn't live in the right city for 15 years" always makes me laugh
I love that they had Lafferty in there to teach everyone.
He missed jumbo and redd up though...
He’s more Altoona than Pittsburgh
Jarrett 37 years in PGH and I’ve never heard “jumbo” that I can recall, and couldn’t think of “redd up” though I’ve heard it before (not very often, mind).
PSN Library My grandma on the north side (norside) said both and my mom from the south side (sahside) used to tell me to redd up my room.
It's pronounced, "Chesterfild" Sid. Like Stillers.
they should’ve re edited kahun’s part with gumband since he got it right
Dads whole side is from Pittsburgh and I’ve heard all these my whole life. Sid was close though, I haven’t heard a couch referred to as a Chesterfield, but I’ve heard it called a Davenport more times than I can count.
Said this out loud immediately, then looked for this comment. Thank you
Kahun was right when he said "Gummiband" it translates to rubberband.
Edit: Someone already mentioned it
I'm from pa...only one I didnt know was jumbo. I was just as lost as Murray lol
@Chad Ehling I live 25 mins outside the city. Never hear Jumbo or Redd up
@@alexrodgers950 same
I've heard jumbo a handful of times, but I'm from Jersey, so 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Chad Ehling same
Same.
I knew all the Canadians would get "pop" since they say it up 'ere too.
@Frank No we call it a beer lol
@Frank well I'm from Toronto and never heard that, maybe in another part of the country or for older people
@@adammorassutti3244 I'm from NB and I've never heard someone call beer pop. Over here at least it's just beer.
LeTang's been playing in Pittsburgh forever & he's clueless... LOL.
I haven't lived in Pittsburgh in a couple of decades and thus missed "Jumbo" but remembered the other words from my youth. Thanks for posting this.
And now for "Kennywood's Open!" lol THAT will be interesting!
"worsh" is my favorite since after leaving my burgh over 45 years ago, I still say it to super fondly remember where I am from...someone needs to take these jagoffs out for a night Dahntahn
Hornqvist made me laugh every time 😂😂
I’ve never heard redd up but yinz missed “jagger”- any plant with a thorn on it
Redd Up is more rural PA than Pittsburgh. I know that one from my relatives who live in farm country. Jagger bush would have been a good one.
@@gakk8658 i could hit pnc park with a rock from my home ..literally dead smack on the northside born and raised and we do say redd up
What does yinz mean again? You’s ?
An evolved Irish contraction of "you ones".
You mean like a jagger bush or jag-off?
im from Pittsburgh and I don't know half of these lol
Outcaxt grew up there and same lol
To be honest a lot of this dialect is overrated.
Srđana Cević ok boomer 👍
You missed “Keller” like color
Sounds like a lot of them need to 'Redd up' on their Pittsburghese!
Half of these guys aren’t even from this country let alone PA.
Considering most of them dont speak great English to begin with, I would have given some of them, like sweeper and broom. As a Pittsburgher, sweeper is anything you use to sweep trash or dirt
Sweeper means vacuum cleaner
Phil Kessel would have answered every single word correctly. Nice going Pens!
2:07 pause, malkins face lmao
Edit: picsart.com/i/316756393230201
I literally use every one of these words everyday! Lol. I love when I find out somethin I'm saying is actually Pittsburghese and I didnt know it just because I've heard it said that way my whole life!
Lafferty should be great at this.
"An alcoholic beverage" would also be an acceptable answer for all of the before mentioned words.
I like the fact that Crosby is Canadian and he got most of them right
Teddy Blueger knew “jimmies” that just makes my day 😂
Lol Crosby did the best I feel like
Nah it was big boy Sam he lived 1 hour 40 min away from the arena so he knows most if these
Crosby got movie star looks.
He said "Slippy" was a type of drink, no, that's over in Philly where Bill Cosby is from.
Lafferty from Hol’dees’burg would’ve aced this quiz.
Chesterfield = Davenport at grandmas house in Cambria Cahnty.
Not going to lie, Yinzer is a challenge. A lot of it unintuitive unless you got the background, right? Could be worse for these lads, though. They could be playing in Newfoundland. Oh, my God. Newfie!!
Lol is it bad i know everyone
no one:
penguins players: broom
Yeah how many cups isles win since Reagan was president lol
the joke: 📍
you: 🪂
🕳
“Yinz” is my fave
I knew all of these, lol. The Burgh runs my the blood!
My grandma was from West Elizabeth, PA ya know south the of the tubes en at. She used to say “feesh” 🐠🐠🐠 that would drive me nuts. Warsh is one thing but f’kin feesh lol I swear we have the most bizarre dialect in the country.
y i n z
Really? Wow
Atheos B. Sapien ok, I’m from Pittsburgh but I don’t speak it but yeah I’ll check it out
What about youins?
When I get my disability check and, pow, it's down to Pants N'nat
Geno suspiciously disappeared halfway into this……
LOL
Malkin kills me
What about Jeet??
I lived in Johnstown PA as a child. we used all these words as well as Mum for Mom. also used PA dutch sentence structure, "throw mum from the train a kiss"
YINZ er CRAZY!
They need to meet, marry, date, etc more local girls if they wanna get that Pittsburghese down pat.
Sofa=Couch (Davenport by some older folks)
dang i dont exactly have the accent sound but i use every one of these words. i have only ever said rubber band likw 3 times in my life its just a gumband.
Redd up and Jumbo is basic Pittsburghese !
4:05 "Do they still say Chesterfield here?" Yea Sid, we also still drive Duesenbergs
I got all but 1. I moved out of the area in 1983. I was born in 59. Though I moved out of the area, I still route only for the Pittsburgh teams. I remember our 4 superbowls in the 70's, and was out of the area when Ben won 2. I am 61 years of age. #7 would be heaven! STEELERS BABY👍
Just shows how sports teams aren't from the city for which they play.
How could you not include YINZ and Tossell cap?
My family always pronounced it Ridd up.
these arent pAnguin
peguin
We say crick and sweeper in NEPA too. Wooks Bear. 🐧
Don’t feel bad, no one in America knows what they’re saying either.
Moronic language
We say pop in Canada to. At least on the west coast
We say pop in Ontario too.
Can confirm we say pop in Ontario but I talk to a lot of American friends on the internet and find myself saying soda a lot
Davenport not Chesterfield. Ha ha
I can't believe that "yinz" wasn't on the list!
Too easy. It's the single word that identifies Pittsburghers to the rest of North America.
OMG they're awful at this 😂
I knew all of these
I’m a Pittsburgher
Should have done Kennywood’s open
slippy “a type of drink?”
NOOOOO
Arnold Slick from Turtle Crick
Well, Crosby wins the contest....
broom broom broom broom broom broom broom broom
Poor Geno
😂 this is the best!!😂
jeet jet?
alexis sherman no. Dijew?
PENGUINS HAVE MORE INTELLECT.
Worsh: Lesh shatishfactory
Crick: A pain in the neck
Jimmies: Things that get rustled
Sweeper: One job on a curling team
Slippy: Crew member in Star Fox
Gumband: Gumby's musical group
Jumbo: With 'shrimp', an oxymoron
Pop: An object often hopped upon
Redd up: An upvote on Reddit
Whats up with comments on youtube?
crosby would get all these right
theres nothing going on inside hornqvists head lol
My mom says that and she’s from Minnesota
Hornqvist was so wrong it was funny
Sid's been paying attention.
Ive lived in Pittsburgh since birth and theres three I didnt get. Jumbo, jimmies, and redd up. Never heard those in my life lol.
How did you miss Redd Up? "Redd Up Pittsburgh" was the slogan that the late and great Mayor O'Connor popularized during his brief tenure.
I didn't know "Jimmies"
Lol at Hornquivst 😂
"Pahrts." Anyone???
Jag off?
Honestly, I've never heard anyone say Redd Up or Jumbo as bologna in Pittsburgh (as I live in it). Everything else I knew though.
Idk half of these
I think it's 'rid up' where I'm from. Also yunz and not yinz. South of Pittsburgh.
Redd up means clean up
I can't believe Jimmies was one of the words, Crosby just shakes his head. Lol, they all prob thought it was condoms, not sprinkles
Since when do people from Pittsburgh say Jimmies?
I need a fact check on some of these
I’d say it’s more warsh, my grandpa is from philly and he says many things like this haha
I've lived here for all 33 years of my life and Had no clue what jumbo was 🤣🤣😭😭
TIL Pittsburgh has very similar slang to parts of Canada.
