    Being a former guide for Elk, Deer (mule and whitetail), Antelope. I got to see A LOT of different setups and arrow broadhead combinations. Fixed blade broadheads suffered from essentially 1 issue, the shooters ability. Mechanicals suffered from 1. shooters ability 2. Penetration (especially on elk quartering away type shots) 3. Mechanics (opening up while stalking, taking them out of the quiver, putting them in the quiver, etc.) 4. Toughness or lack off. By far more broken blades, bent and broken heads (even not including heads that hit an Elk Humerus or ball joint between Humerus and Scapula).

    My 2 closest archery shops have told me multiple times that "You can't tune a fixed blade to shoot with a field point. You should use a mechanical instead." One even told me to just resight to the fixed blade instead of adjusting rest or timing. How do I find someone that knows tuning or should I just invest and do it myself?

      Any particular reason the VPA would give better blood trails than a montec? I've only ever shot VPA 2 blades but the tool stool they use was hard to get razor sharp IMO so I would think the montec would have a better edge and give a better trail

      @@thwackTXall tool steel would be harder to get sharp. That is because the steel is stronger and more durable due to it’s composition. It will hold the edge longer as well, due to that composition. It is the same for knives made with tool steel.

    • @Qbynordi
      @Qbynordi Год назад

      @@thwackTX the Montec is cast, the VPA is machined with tool steel. A little honing and the VPA stays much, much, much sharper than you will ever see from a cast Montec. The casting also makes the density distribution less even compared to the machined head. Montecs can actually be weighted disproportionate and heavier on one side than the other, resulting in worse arrow flight.

However, my arrow speed on my Hoyt RX7 is only 254 with a light arrow. So, I'm a fan of a light arrow and a broadhead (total weight 405gr). Love to hear your thoughts on this. Great podcast. I agree with MFJJ on everything he said. I've shot quite a few fixed blade broadheads through animals. I have a 31" dl at 70#, so penetration isn't ever an issue. My arrows typical pass thru the animal at a fairly high velocity. The bigger issue for me is to find one that flies extremely well, and then also can survive the impact after the animal (rocks where I hunt). I've found the best flying broadheads are the short squatty designs. TOTA, Exodus, Ozcut 3blade, Annihilator, Method MD3, Grim Reaper Microhades Pro 4 blade all fit that description. The ones that have survived the impact after the animal the best are the ones with higher rockwell hardness, and are single piece design. I also want to be able to sharpen the blades myself, so for simplicity that means a 3 blade because you can lay it on a diamond plate to resharpen and a flat strop. 3 blades don't get as sharp as a two blade because of the blade angle, but you can get them plenty sharp. Due to my needs, the broadheads I use the most are the 125 grain annihilator xl and the 125 grain Method MD3. The annihilator XL are so tough that I've never broken one. The tips get very sharp and the thickness of the blade as it transitions to that scoop does cause a big triangle hole. The MD3 makes a huge hole but they were a limited run, so save those for special hunts.

    • @michaelschnitzer4054
      @michaelschnitzer4054 8 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve seen a few broken md3. I think the material they use is better for edge retention but slightly less impact resistant. Annihilator xl’s for the win. They put’em down quick.

    • @michaelschnitzer4054
      @michaelschnitzer4054 8 месяцев назад +1

      They were from hitting rocks after a pass through. Ask the design difference with the back of the annihilator it has the scoop which puts more material in the back of the blades the angle on the back of the blade make the ends of each cutting edge more durable and slightly smaller cutting diameter.

    • @houghtonic1975
      @houghtonic1975 8 месяцев назад

      I agree with both of your posts. I also feel the MD3 has better edge retention, but based on experience is slightly less impact resistant. The design of the blade of the Annihilator XL is also very robust at the back end where a fracture would normally occur. Top that off with the fact there are no sharp corners (other than the blade), and from an engineering aspect, the broadhead is durable by design. Anywhere there is a sharp corner is where a stress concentration occurs. If single piece broadheads would be more filleted or rounded as they meet the ferrule, then that would add to the resistance to blades shearing off.

    Shit, I had a coyote stop a grim reaper whitetail special like a pillow. I quit using them after that. The Sevr 1.5's are plain impressive for a machinal. They kill quick and get about the same penetration as a regular old 3 blade muzzy. So far I have watched everything drop with them. One blood trail was particularly gory. Shot placement and blade sharpness dictates blood trail much more than cutting dia in my experience. Last year I double lunged a buck with a very sharp Sevr 1.7. It made a 2.5" entry but no exit, zero blood. Had I not heard it fall in a puddle of water, I likely would not have found it. Lastly, draw length and weight are not in the calculations for energy. Speed and weight are though. Draw weight and draw length are merely predictors of speed. Too many think 30" or 70# means they can shoot anything. People need to be more clear when discussing this. Lastly, truly large male pigs are the toughest thing to get through on this continent. I have about given up on all mechanical's with them. When you are in a treestand the problem of getting an exit and therefor blood is even worse. People can hate on the Ranch Fairy all they want but needing a substantial projectile to get through them is not something he is wrong about. I am hoping the 1.5 Sevr can be the mechanical that conquers the big ones. The biggest I have killed with one is a 180# sow. I didn't get a complete pass trough but I did get 26" of penetration while severing the spine and breaking two ribs going in. Two ribs and the leg bone were broken on the off side. The point of the head was poking out, but not the blades. She only made it 25 yds. This was from 30' up and 37 yards away. This gave me some confidence, but I will have some Magnus black hornets in my quiver. If I can see it is a big one coming and I have time, the Sevr will get switched to the Magnus.

    I have a question. Where in a physics equation concerning energy do I plug in draw weight and draw length? Just asking. Also, just asking if a 70# bow that shoots a 450gr arrow 260 fps has more energy than a 60# bow that launches the same projectile at the same speed? Why would I be able to shoot a larger diameter broadhead or head with more blades out of the 70# in that situation? How does draw weight alone dictate broadhead choice?

    • @andrecancilla4901
      @andrecancilla4901 Год назад

      The forces imparted on the arrow from the bow is what dictates the kinetic energy. So in theory, the kinetic energy of the bow system is constant regardless of arrow weight. So a 70 lb bow is going to always contain more energy than a 60 lb bow all other things being equal. Momentum will be dependent on multiple factors including arrow weight and draw weight. So momentum on a bow system will change with arrow weight but kinetic energy will stay constant for the most part

      If both bows shoot the same arrows the same speed then they are both producing the same amount of energy. The 70 pound bow is just less efficient. When he’s saying those numbers I think he’s talking about modern bows

    New to Bow hunting, I'm using QAD exodus 100gr, 30" Draw, 70# Draw weight, GT Pierce platinum arrows, bout 440ish, sending arrows everyday to try and make it happen in a couple months, is this an effective setup? Minus my inexperience as the main variable...that is

    High helical fletches good for flight stability but not good for penetration, twisting energy must stop on contact with body or media thus take’s energy from ability to penetrate…. Now think about a bullet, full metal jacket vs soft tip or hollow point more energy is transferred into the body by a round designed to mushroom or expand that’s why a four blade head will transfer more energy over any other head such as 3 or 2 blade. Like wise why would you build a heavy arrow with a 2 blade head, counter productive All the KE is just passing through instead of being transferred into the animal

    • @man_skills
      @man_skills 21 час назад

      The rotational energy is very small as it's rpms vs diameter is very limited. Also with a single bevel the broadhead rotates naturally when passing through. As to the question of KE, that is a non factor in Archery kills. If you dump 100% of your energy into the animal then the arrow does not pass through. On top of that there is not enough KE to kill large game. Broadheads kill by blood loss. Bullets can/do kill with KE, but not arrows. I'd rather an arrow zip right through the vitals with as little KE transfer as possible. When that happens the deer will often trot off a short distance and look back wondering what happened while blood pours out.

    You forgot one terrific broadhead, and Thats QAD exodus. Use them on deer blows big holes through the deer and penetration had a great. It would be great for our work. If you have the right set up, there’s been plenty of test on RUclips with QAD Exodus and they’re almost indestructible. The next time when you do a broadhead review, you might want to mention them search RUclips protest on. Thanks for reading guys. Have a wonderful day.

      There is the Ozcut Hurricane. Not sure what steel they use, but they look like they’d be hard to sharpen. 100, 125, and 150 grains only in right bevel though.
