    Wow! It's almost amazing that they are still in business if that's their norm. I haven't been able to start my business yet (bye to some health issues), but I would have done the same you had your guy do (cleaning up behind the tool). I saved a horrible lawn simply by mulching every time and cutting it a little taller, and now after three years, the grass is choking out the weeds.

    I agree with you on the customer cheating. Minding my own business is the best way to go about those situations. Don't get involved with people's bullsh*t.
    One the other hand... That "competitors" quality of work is beyond lacking. It reminds me of the landscaper my mother used to have mowing her property. Scalped spots from the mowers, trimmer burn on every spot they ran a string trimmer, grass left everywhere. After I took over mowing for her, re-seeding her lawns dead spots, redefining the flower beds, and mulching... It led to her neighbors asking what I'd want to mow their yards, trim shrubs, etc. which then led to me forming my own lawn care company.

    Mind your own. I used to do power cleaning in Baton Rouge in the summertime for a company between college semesters while I was at LSU; our crew witnessed that shit almost weekly. One customer we had was rumored to be part of a Rich Italian mob because he would hand us 5x the normal invoice amount in cash each time we went out there(probs because the feds were all over his bank accounts), and his wife was a known cheater in the local community, so we kept shut and prayed he don't come around asking us one day. And he never did, so I slept better every night.

    I use to have this one customer she always wanted to ask about things in the lawn. Check was always under the mat. Then leaf clean up season rolled around. My wife often helps me on leaf season. Well the check was not under the mat. I rang the bell at 9 am she comes to the door in a black negligeeand her little dog barking. I stepped back from the door and called out "HEY HONEY YOU GOTTA SEE THIS LITTLE PUPPY" that old crow looked like I deer in truck lights. My wife played right along and ask is that Bijan? I think I spelled it right. But anyway I raised her price and then got the extra cash and then dropped her like a hot potato.

    I got the new Milwaukee switch tank sprayer. Best splurge purchase I’ve made in a while. Love not worrying about the risk of contaminating a tank with roundup when going to a selective herbicide. I also sprayed my blower racks with rustoleum paint that matched the green over the winter. Shouldn’t have to do that but they’re holding up better than factory pint.

    The one thing that burns me up? I see things like this at a National Guard NBC response facility in town. The main building has this manmade hill/valley that surrounds half the property, I guess for drainage.
    The company that mows that property takes their zero turn sitdown mower up those hills at a 45 degree angle, and as a result they leave ragged patches of grass at the base of the hill unmowed, and they completely burn the grass out of the turf at the very top. They leave deep ruts in the ditches and they skip trimming ... Wait, they USED to skip the trimming until they saw me shaking my head as they were packing up.
    In my opinion, our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, cousins, aunts and uncles in the military deserve better than this.

  • @jonathans3075
    @jonathans3075 5 лет назад

    I'll be honest here about that lawn care competitor. I've seen this happen all too often in my area. However the competition is fierce where I am where the average residential lawn is $20-$25 a cut. Includes edging, weed eating, lawn mowing rotating the cut every week, and blowing off driveway and bagging the grass. There is literally no money to be had here that being said. The survival of the business is the most important thing to every business owner. I understand that pride in the quality of work wins the customer over. But as a small lawn company single member LLC it means making or breaking the business as you'll always come out in the negative after over head with how cutthroat the competition is out here low balling to the point the profits have bottomed out. I guarantee most of the small lawn companies and some larger ones will play dirty low balling and cutting corners to keep their prices this low. Where I live, if you aren't playing their game, you'll quickly learn how fast you are replaceable if your price isn't right. Here where I live they want quality but aren't willing to pay up so you have to figure ways to deliver it and keep costs low for your clients as price around here seems to be the major deciding factor.
