Been playing for about five days now - started after watching this tutorial and so glad I watched it first. I love the game, it’s so immersive; I’m on 55 harvests already and just took down my first Black Bear with the .270 and a polymer tipped bullet to the left lung.
first thing i took down in the game was a black bear, i was stalking a whitetail and i literally ran into it, It took a swipe at me and ran but not before i shot it in the liver!
@@bridgettawinchester3063 I took my first black bear down barely 2 days into the game. Shot him with 230. soft into the neck. from like 125m. Broke his backbone in the first shot. Dropped him down immediately. it was more of a lucky shot and surprisingly it was my only big game animal that I dropped down immediately. Anything else would run for miles.
Just started playing this game last night, ended up pulling an all nighter scouring around & thought I am sure glad there's no hunger & thirst stat, or I wouldn't be making it very far in this game.
Probably about 10 hours into the game before I came across this tutorial, really wish I’d found this 1st. Some great information that is for sure gonna help me get them harvests in, great work dude 👌
I just started about four days ago. I was shooting moose, bear, deer, and fowl with the .243. I started over becasue I wasted money on building stands. This tutorial was very imformative. Thanks.
I just started playing on Xbox. This was really helpful. I didn’t even know about the visibility system, and after watching you, I realize that I get hyper focused on the actual tracks when I track an animal and end up walking right up on it and spooking it. I need to back off when I realize it’s close. If you wanted to make more videos on this, I think one focused on tracking lightly injured animals would be helpful
Just bought the better ammo, and wow that makes it a night and day difference. Shots that normally might not even make it to one lung sometimes hit two
THIS IS THE ONE ‼️ thank you for starting with the finest details. I looked up so many videos and was unable to find all the tiny stuff for a beginner! Appreciate you!!
I call the "wind tracker" my "Stink Gage" describing it as "My stinky green smell" goes from me and spreads out. That makes it a lot easier to new players to understand. Make sure your 'stink' is not in the direction of the animals you intend to hunt. Other tips: 1. For the "X-RAY" view on harvest, click right-mouse button on PC. This is useful to show you exactly where vital organs are located for each animal's future kills. 2. My rule of thumb on noise... ignoring other senses (smell, sight) and NO PERKS/SKILLS.. On a typical animal you can run up to 150m away, walk up to 80m away, and from there you need to crawl. Just know that for most animals detection priority is typically 1st = Hear you. 2nd = See you. 3rd = Smell you. 3. The game has no moral punishment.. just reduces your scores when using wrong-bullets or poor shot location. So if you get an opportunity, don't ignore it.. TAKE THE SHOT and you might get lucky... If the animal is only minor-injured don't bother tracking it. Move on. This is NOT REAL LIFE HUNTING. Fully unlocking the game requires money and experience so play the game correctly and shoot without morals or mercy. Once you are a badass high level rich hunter, then you can become a saint of mercy and ethics. 4. Starting players should try for a vital hit (sideways-torso towards the head but avoid the shoulder bone) on EVERYTHING THEY SEE. Initial gun has soft-point ammo that is FREE but it requires the above shot placement to have any chance at killing a level 3-4. Shoot at every target you can for money/levels. 5. Starting Players should go to Hirschfelden , unlocking the closest outpost. Get 2 sets of 10 CANADIAN GOOSE decoys from inventory (I think you start with them) and buy at least 100 bullets of FREE ammo for your starter rifle (store the shotgun and pistol). If you have the TENTS DLC, bring a hunting blind. Go to a hayfield (there is one about 400m SW from that starting outpost). Put out all 20 of your Goose decoys in the hayfield, put up your hunting blind a bit away from the decoys with some empty space between them in the hayfield (~30m). Then enter your hunting blind and wait for geese (If you don't have a blind then just go completely prone (Z on PC) on top of a hay bale and wait). The geese will magically start arriving eventually landing nearby.. take out your starter rifle and kill one (if you can kill multiple then do so). Exit you blind and harvest and then do it again. For new players this is MUCH EASIER then wandering around.. Geese will continually come to you and be unable to hear/see you in the blind. Make sure you do this during day time so they see your lures. Geese are minimally affected by hunting pressure so kill, kill, kill. Using your starting rifle and free ammo any torso shot on a goose should drop it immediately (its over-powered for Geese, but you should still make 450-500 Hunter Bucks, 150 xp, and 27 rifle skill each goose.)
Ahha soft tip ammo at the start. I thought I missed the organs on this first deer. Tracked it far. And when I lost it I stumbled upon a MOOSE. The result was same as in The Long Dark. I was reduced to half health. Lucky, there is no broken ribs in this game. Thank you for this introduction. I like this game, but after first day I was ready to give up. Whole day wandering through forest and those animals were playing with me. No signs of them.
i started playing yesterday, and the first that i did i got the same soft ammo but switched to the one that has lower expansion but higher penetration, and looking at anatomy of the deer after my first kill i realized where the heart is so I've been trying to get behind the deer on their left side and shoot at the angle where their bend is, and always get a clean heart/lung shot after about 25kills. Game is really nifty.
Yeah I’ve been struggling so far, but I haven’t even hunted in quite some time, just don’t have the funds. Thanks for putting this out dude, I’ll be using it as a reference and I just got the game like three days ago. I knew my starting ammo isn’t great for what I want to be doing on the game, but yeah I still need guidance!
Great tutorial, mate. Lots of great information At the 28:30 mark, you mention the bleat caller. It does work. I've had use of it n had to share it. If yiur hidden and you dee a deer within rang 200m Max. If you watch them, they'll look for the sound n head towards it. If your hiden n patent enough, they walk right under /past or around you. I'm giving you an easy close-up shot. Good for photography too
Thank you for starting a new playthrough. I'm new to the game (picked it up on steam sale) and found your channel through this game. I will be watching your long dark videos now too
i have a tip from my experience you can see the exact distance from taking your binoculars and aim at the target and press R. another one is when calling an animal i dont know if it a bug or not but when you equip you binoculars all the other sound disappear but the sound of the animal walking. sound of you if you move. that gonna help you hear if an animal responded to the call. another tip try getting near the animal for at least 33 m from him if you have a low accuracy rifle because if you shoot the animal from far away and you aiming for the vital organs it probably not gonna land there. i advise you to use that gun with 100 accuracy for shooting from long range maximum 150m and if you aiming for the heart or lungs it probably gonna land there but remember it is the right rounds for the small animals to medium. that was it for know btw by this time im still a beginner too
I was told the game was bad...”because they don’t tell you anything”. I guess that person should’ve seen your video. I’m glad I’m getting this information early, thank you.

Nice guide, really in depth. I got this game last week in the sale with all DLC and been totally obsessed with it. I haven't played anything that sucked the hours up like COTW does for a long time. 70 hours played in a week 😂 And at least 10 hours of that time has been mapping all my watering zones at Hirschfelden. I get the feeling the devs never really intended players to figure all that out lol. I'm still learning and picking up info so this is all useful.

Great video. Taught me a lot. I just started playing a few days ago and have struggled. This will help a lot. I know RNG matters and I need to be lucky to find them, get them to respond to the call and be in the right spot to get them. At least now I know what to expect and how to do it correctly.
A lot of it is just knowing your doing it right and it will work. If you’re not sure it can become a bit daunting to have that confidence which breeds the patience needed. I hope you continue to enjoy the game. It’s a really good one for escaping and relaxing for a bit.
Excellent Video - I have been playing this for about 3 weeks and didn't know about the ammo type number or the red on the map, or the scope and distance ability. Subscribed - still about 20 minutes in so I am bound to find more things I didn't know about.
Hi there, this is great! I been playing the game on and off but now that I have had the chance to watch your vids the game is much more fun, I understand a lot more stuff now. I Thank you buddy.
Great job on the tutorial. Been playing a little bit, have all the current DLC's. Still enjoyed listening to your tutorial. Look forward to more from you.
That was awesome! I just started playing this game the other day. This video got me even more excited about it. I was wondering why my head shots on the bear and moose weren't putting them right down. Thank you😁.
Thank you for these tips. I started playing the game a few days ago and I feel like the game has done a poor job at teaching me its mechanics and acclimatising me to its gameplay loop. It sort of just throws lots of information at you at once and by the time that info is useful it's past its relevancy.
I luv this game so much .. and yet sometimes finding animal is difficult but now thanks to u i know why and i know how to play this game right thx buddy.!

Thanks so much for this guide , just bought the game and was struggling to understand the mechanics like the inventory , ammo types etc . I'm just struggling to track animals and stay hidden . The animals tend to always sense or see me .
Thank you so much for this vid, I was gunna quit because it was just seeming so relentless looking for the one I shot as it gets away, but all the little tips at the start helped me a lot and three kills in. thank you for the vid.
i know im late, but i was super busy with uni, now as i return to cotw i see this on my recommended, skipped through the video and you have 0 DLC usage it seems, which is great, ill watch the full video tomorrow as now is very late, maybe i learn more technical information than just winging it as i did till now, and as an example, not from you but from a short video, deer beyond 200 meters dont hear the gunshot if you dont shoot towards them, im sure your video has more stuff like this, cant wait to discover the whole 53 mins of it when i wake up !
You can aim for the spine in the neck on white tails and black tails, and penetrate all the way to it from every angle even with the soft points on the .243, it drops them too.
Great video man, it’s always a pleasure. Btw have you ever thought about putting your some of your favorite clips on an “Accurize” tiktok? I feel like throwing some of your clips on there would bring a ton of fresh viewers to your channel. Just a thought i had while scrolling around and I thought of you!
I never really thought about it. My long style gameplay didn’t really seem compatible with the ADHD world of RUclips Shorts and TikTok…maybe in wrong though. 🤷♂️
Thank you so much for this video. I want to love this game and was so confused. This was so informative. For example I thought the bullet type number was animal difficulty. Really appreciate it
Hi ! very nice guide ! But how did you manage to activate all skills and perks ? I'm level 60 and I've only been able to activate 11 skills and 11 perks.
Is the ability to "spot" an animal, where you can see their outline as they're hidden in underbrush, exclusive to the binoculars? I usually just give a quick look ahead with my rifle's scope and I've never seen any option to "spot" anything.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Have watched a few and yours is the best in many ways that others have already remarked upon. I'm really hooked now just need to get on and buy the game 🙂.
I've recently redownloaded the game 2 days ago after not touching it since it came out and I got to say, I'm loving the updates and the DLCs. moose seem to be my only issue as even with a .308 I'm having trouble killing it. Multiple shots and hours of tracking and it hasn't gone down at all
Main things that made me delete it was I couldn’t find any outpost wasn’t sure how to buy and equipped new guns and then how to get the ammo on the gun and I was really struggling to find any game animals I’d track and track and then lose all truck after 5 min so I deleted then I seen the bundle pack with the dog and tried it again and now it’s the only game I play as of now but kind a getting bored wish there were more maps with black tail deer I only seem to find moose elk goats and bison but that’s really it I rarely get a nice buck let alone even see them
You know a game is not for everyone when you’ve watched a total of 1:40:00 of beginners tips and it’s still dam near impossible to even get your sights on an animal
I assume this is an automatic save when you quit. I heard that it might make a slight difference when walking not to have your rifle out in front or carrying it.
Bought the game recently(full all dlcs), stuff I looked for and didn't find in your vid: What ammo should I go after soft, What rifle should I go for after the first one I get. Do bloodhounds spook your prey? How do you get binoculars with range finder in them.. (I have one from DLC but it has night vision which isnt very nice to use)Explanation about blood ratings.. what does the percent and amount means etc
- the ammo you can use depends on the weapon you use. most rifles do have softpoint and polymer tip bullets. most players prefer the polymer tips, becourse it it easier with them to get vital hits. - weapons (btw more the ammo for the weapons) and animals are splitted into classes. to get a better hunting score, those too should match. there are not many weapons in the base game for animal class 2 (foxes, coyotes etc) and 3 (roe deer, goats etc). so while you want to hang on on rifles you usually would want to keep the first one at hand. - bloodhounds are not supposed to spook animals but the next patch with probably the nuxt bugs will come. so who knows, what might happen? :p - there are 3 types of binos in the base game. you have to unlock them by leveling and buy them afterwards for ingame money.
Fun fact, check as a noob how many animals you have actually spooked away by sight, noise, and smell...I could not believe how many I did, compared to how many animals I actually got to see...
I already own and have many hours in this game, but I'm going to watch and support you anyways . Keep it up man!

Thank you so much for this vid, I was gunna quit because it was just seeming so relentless looking for the one I shot as it gets away, but all the little tips at the start helped me a lot and three kills in. thank you for the vid.
Congrats on the three kills! I’m honored that I could help. Mission Accomplished on my end then. Happy Hunting!!
i know im late, but i was super busy with uni, now as i return to cotw i see this on my recommended, skipped through the video and you have 0 DLC usage it seems, which is great, ill watch the full video tomorrow as now is very late, maybe i learn more technical information than just winging it as i did till now, and as an example, not from you but from a short video, deer beyond 200 meters dont hear the gunshot if you dont shoot towards them, im sure your video has more stuff like this, cant wait to discover the whole 53 mins of it when i wake up !
Great Video. I got this game around the time you released it and it would have been so helpful if I had seen it then.
How did you max all the skills, I thought they were limited to 22 each for perks and skills?
Is the ability to "spot" an animal, where you can see their outline as they're hidden in underbrush, exclusive to the binoculars? I usually just give a quick look ahead with my rifle's scope and I've never seen any option to "spot" anything.
You covered every single question I had many thanks
I really enjoyed the Encased playthrough, will there be more of it in future?
Sure I can do more.
Been wandering for days. Great game. Save your money.
This is the best video on the topic.
The HUD in the Lower right does not show on my screen, what am i doing wrong
Did tbis release to counsok before PC? Says Aug 16th until available on pc
How did you have so make perks and skill points for only being on level 15?
you start with a .270 stradavarius right from the get go, you only have access to soft points for a bit but better than ranger .243 with soft points.
Well done. Thank you for this vid. It really helped.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Have watched a few and yours is the best in many ways that others have already remarked upon.
I'm really hooked now just need to get on and buy the game 🙂.
I’m glad it was helpful. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Happy hunting!
Best tutorial video I’ve seen
it is about the year anniversary of me watching this, i killed my first great one yesterday I was screaming so excited
Yo how do you zoom with the scope and binoculars on Xbox
This was very helpful. Thanks
so happy i came across this vid very detail
Loved it, I learned a few things, and you are super relaxed and pleasant to listen to. Good on you man. Thank you.
Sweet! Glad I was able to help a little bit. Happy hunting!!
Superb, now I feel ready to get back out there. Thanks for your time.
It tells me that it always sees me where do you get to where it doesn't see you or where do you buy some more clothes someone please help me thanks
I have over 100 hours of gameplay and I had no idea what hunting pressure was 💀
Great tutorial. This video really helped out a lot .
The video was so long I couldn't see all of it. How do you equip dogs?
If you shoot them do they eventually die no matter what? Like with the low no organs hit?
no
I've recently redownloaded the game 2 days ago after not touching it since it came out and I got to say, I'm loving the updates and the DLCs. moose seem to be my only issue as even with a .308 I'm having trouble killing it. Multiple shots and hours of tracking and it hasn't gone down at all
That’s funny, my first day downloading it & my first kill is a moose with the starter rifle. Took about 20min
.303 makes short work of moose, polymer that is
Good job... It's a really great starting tutorial. 👍
Awesome tutorial dude!
Just curious, did you mod this account your playing for the tutorial?
Main things that made me delete it was I couldn’t find any outpost wasn’t sure how to buy and equipped new guns and then how to get the ammo on the gun and I was really struggling to find any game animals I’d track and track and then lose all truck after 5 min so I deleted then I seen the bundle pack with the dog and tried it again and now it’s the only game I play as of now but kind a getting bored wish there were more maps with black tail deer I only seem to find moose elk goats and bison but that’s really it I rarely get a nice buck let alone even see them
Cool! That's very nice of you!
seriously considering this game.
You know a game is not for everyone when you’ve watched a total of 1:40:00 of beginners tips and it’s still dam near impossible to even get your sights on an animal
just got this game a few days ago, so far I've played for 3 hrs and killed 5 animals because I'm terrible. hopefully this helps.
Dude... 5 kills in 3 hours is insanely good. I crouch walked for 5 hours and didn't see a single animal even when tracking.
Main reason i keep a tent on me so i can just switch right there instead of always going to the outposts
awesome video, thanks
Wow. This is perfect 👍
Thank you that help alot
Ths was soooooo helpful
شكرا عالشرح الرائع
What I don't get is that you came across the two bears and one said 5-medium and your bullets are for 6 and you said that you couldn't use them.
that’s the difficulty rating
Some one tell me how to switch between the x-ray view and normal view of the animal when looking at the summary of the animal on console btw
Lol, my real dog her name is Rosti, but it sounds the same when you say it. She was listening like, who the hell is saying my name?
Very helpful
How can i change the time to 12 hour's instead 24 day time driving me crazy🤯
I assume this is an automatic save when you quit. I heard that it might make a slight difference when walking not to have your rifle out in front or carrying it.
There isn’t really a save. It keeps your location and time, but all the animals, blood trails and harvests get reset when you leave the map/quit.
You are too funny. You get to talking in a whispered voice when you sense an animal. Realism at its' finest.
End of 2024 cod 6 bata out and I’m here😂
It's literally every cod ever released, Idk how people continue to buy them the only reply I ever hear is " heh its got more movement so its better🤓"
- there are 3 types of binos in the base game. you have to unlock them by leveling and buy them afterwards for ingame money.
I’ve been playing this for like five fours and haven’t killed anything since the tutorial. Am I stupid? I don’t want to stop playing though
Fun fact, check as a noob how many animals you have actually spooked away by sight, noise, and smell...I could not believe how many I did, compared to how many animals I actually got to see...
My first kill, last night, was with the pistol 😂
