The price is what hold me back here. I think for the price and usability, I would still opt to just go in on a actual 4x5 system. Since getting the focus right in many lighting conditions seems so cumbersome, I'd probably stick it on a tripod, which then sort of makes it just have the advantage of having faster framing, which again is great....but is it great enough? I could probably get a proper 4x5 set up for $1k, but with this its probably around $500 all said and done, and I just feel like its not enough for me. I'd still be interested in a GOOSE mod, but if the GOOSE didn't mirror images I'd have bought one already. Poor GOOSE, it just is so close, but when you photograph signs or anything with text it really looks silly. My lomo back is just chillin' on the shelf still waiting to be used. Also was surprised to see one of your lovely photography subjects on the box too. Congrats on that.
Instax film does not produce reversed images on the 600sc--since the image is exposed from the back of the final image. Speaking from personal experience, I shoot instax mini on my 600se.
What an interesting idea. I’m one of the subs that asked about using the instax back with THE GOOSE. I’m still holding hope for a miracle to come along and bless us with a solution🙏🏾 Great video as usual Benny Boy!
one tip, if you need a rangefinder, use one of the older cylindrical ones (Leica iii type, looks like an upright cylinder)- this allows you to at least get distance, also similar to Alpha TC and other cameras of this type.
Love that you show us new alternatives for instant film, Ben! Great expansion for the channel!! (& You probably already know this but since you also have an RB67; a video of Alin Tolea's Polaroid i-type back would be epic? If you're ever in Europe, you can borrow mine ;) ) Already looking forward to the next video, man!
while i definitely appreciate the smaller(ish) footprint of the rex i can’t help but wonder why someone wouldn’t just go straight for mounting an instax wide back directly onto a mamiya universal or 600se. the limitations of this camera seems like the likelihood of shooting multiple frames to get the right shot is probably pretty high. the biggest downside is no matched focusing mechanism and the lack of parallax compensation. the great thing about the frame lines in the mup or 600se is that they move to adjust the framing depending on the distance you’re focused to, otherwise when you’re at minimum focusing distance you would cut off the bottom of your subject. for $335+$150 for the lomograflok, and whatever else the 4x5-2x3 adaptor costs you’re probably in the range of $525-550. the last mup kit i bought was $150 with a 127mm and 6x9 back and the instax wide back was $350 at the time. seems like you can have all the same functionality and more with greater ease of use at a lower investment- much lower if you’ve already got a mup or 600se.
Ethan’s Lomograflok back with integral focus screen is itself a simple product that makes the back much easier to use. Leave your 4x5 camera’s view screen at home and use Ethan’s focusing spacer back, that quick attaches via the Graflok flange.
Errata: I’m referring to Ethan’s focusing spacer with integral focus screen, something Lomography should have released themselves but I’m glad Ethan thought of it.
My two cents on the REX and pricing, because it has come up a couple of times in this thread. It is a work of art- a series of handmade cameras from the artist. To compare it in price to mass-produced items is to not fully understand the changing art landscape. From that standard, it is more than worth it. You are buying an Ethan Moses. I am extremely biased on this, though, as I consider my work an extension of my art. Painter by education, 3d fabricator by choice!
one question that you didn't answer directly in this video, as this uses Mamiya press lenses, do you use them out or in? (the 110 mm esp. has an ability to bayonet to a "ground Glass" focus position so it can use the sheet film back, or to use the back swing/tilt functions)- so with the spacing of this camera, do you use the lens in retracted mode, or out full?
This is one ugly beast. Luve how portable it is. The first In-An-E camera of the 21st Century. Reminds me of the prototype I built myself, the shoebox pinhole Pre Lomo with a 4X5 film holder using Kodak PanX. About f1200. Beautiful velvety diffraction and unlimited depth of field. Then contact printing of the neg. Ben, you gotta do this with an aubergine Italiano on your Instax Wide Lomo Back. You will fall in love with photography all over again.
Can you install the lomograflok "upside down" so that the wide part of the instax print is on the bottom of the image when you shoot in landscape orientation?
Nice video! What a cooool camera! Just bought my 4x5 intrepid though... Some of the instax wide images have a black frame around them- how did you get that?
Hi Birte!! Thank you! I took a scissor and cut the area where the pods are all the way across. Then you can peel the face of the Instax border off. I might do a little bonus video to explain it better but that’s basically how it works!
@@birtenystadmagnussen5672 Wow Birte that is such an honor to hear, I’m a big admirer of your work!!! Hope one day we can cross paths in Norway or the USA!

Omg this camera looks like a Spykids film prop! 😂 Seriously though - absolutely love this camera’s results! ❤️😬
Those Mamiya lenses being used for something so dynamic is always awesome to see - recycling this glass into something wild!
Ethan is a national treasure!
I would defend him with my LIFE

How would you use the focusing mechanism on the 600SE? Alter the rangefinder in some way?
Thanks for the tip on the Measure app!

Haha, the infamous photographer jeans!
I really dig how the piggyback 6x9 adapter lets you swap between medium format backs and the Lomo Graflok.
NEver taking these jeans off!

That sounds beautiful Alan! Certainly on the table!
What I don't get, is why does the graflok cost $180.
Also will we be able to buy the STL files at some point for this camera?

Anything available for a Bronica SQ?
I love the look of Instax Wide sans frame. Does that just cut off with an xacto knife or is there some sort of instant magic?
It does just come right off after you cut the pods off, but it can be a little finicky, might be worth a short video!
