  • In the age where everyone is ceasing the production of SLRs, one small business decided they'd make a new one...and make it for Instax Square! That is outrageous. We get into that and much more on this episode of the In An Instant Program.

I love precise framing, so for me the pinnacle of instant film camera, is to use an Instax back on a great SLR camera. I had a Mint RF70, but the framing guides were not precise at all (and Mint camera are too expansive...) ! I have an SX-70, the framing and the viewfinder are splendid, but the Polaroid film quality is not good, far from the standards of the past (Time-Zero Polaroid film). So I recently choose to buy the new Escura Hasselback (it is a new version, with focus to infinity and darkslide) to put on my Hasselblad 500cm. I hope for great results... please review it on this channel when it will be available !

I own both models. I bought the 660 off of the Kickstarter. It's a super cool camera! I keep looking for a fix for the loss of peel-apart film like a heroin addict. It doesn't; but I prefer it over my Polaroid 690! I will most likely part with the Polaroid in favor of staying with Fuji instant film. I wish the built-in lens was removable because I'd love to put a medium format Pentax lens on there! I agree with you on the quality of the Fuji film. Love your content!

    Great review.
I love my SL660. Been waiting for a full manual instant film camera for a long time (very tempted by the the Mint Instax wide but too much money for me).
My slight concerns with the SL660 is the rechargeable battery failing, the very delicate shutter button breaking and the little power on/off switch! It’s a tank of a camera, put some robust chunky switches/buttons on there!!!
I don’t really see the point in Nons making 35mm or 120 versions. There are hundreds of full manual 35mm & medium format cameras available but barely any instant film full manual cameras.
Bring on the Nons Instax wide 😃

Hey great review of this amazing piece. Just wonder what is the focusing mechanism of this camera? It seems to be extremely difficult to nail focus when the viewfinder is not ideal, which happened to be the only downside of 660… I am using the Hasselblad back newly made from NONS. Definitely like it. So would try its other products.

I’ve had this camera for about a year. Only recently did I have to figure out on my own that this camera body loses a lot of light through the process of converting the image from a full-frame lens to a 6x6 picture. I have to meter at ISO 250 for accurate exposure using a Pentax 50mm lens. The on-camera light meter is calibrated for this, so you will get good exposure using it, but if you meter by hand, it will be different.

Your review got me revvved up... and I now have one. That being said, while the Canon EF/EOS red-dot mount is nice, broad daylight pics with 800 speed film were unsuccessful. The Canon EOS lenses only offer manual focus control. BUT... my FD -> EF adapter allows usage of FD lenses with manual iris adjustment ring. And THAT helps. Overall, I love the 660, and the Square Instax. As a photographic artist, we can now exercise more creative control while creating our single original print.

Damn, I kinda wrote this off after the initial specs were released and the viewfinder had such limited coverage but compared to the RB with a square back, this has waaaaaaaay faster lenses, and takes up so much less space. Not to mention fd lenses are cheap and plentiful. I had no idea it was a fully metal shell either. This is kinda putting it in must buy territory for me. I can definitely see why they didn’t offer a full coverage viewfinder since the body depth would have to be close to double to accommodate a mirror that large. I mean look at the depth of the RB, P67, SL66, 500C. It makes sense but it’s a bit frustrating. I’d like to see this with maybe a waist level finder option as well to really embrace the medium format feel. Only thing that wasn’t covered which could be helpful info is what kind of shutter it has and if it has flash sync capabilities. With the lens off it kind of looks like a leaf shutter behind the lens, but I’ll definitely do some more research to find out. Thanks for bringing it back to the instant roots! Feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen something instant and I’m totally here for it.

I don’t know what to think about this camera, tbh. I love that they actually ventured to make an SLR instant camera (as opposed to those crappy viewfinder cameras by Lomo and the horrible viewfinder of the MINT ones), but they dropped the ball in so many senses that I don’t think is worth it.
The frame coverage of the viewfinder is unacceptable, what’s the point of having an SLR camera if you can only see the center of your frame? I can tell immediately that they compromised on the prism size, they should have made it much bigger to achieve full coverage. Also, they should have just ditch the 35mm compatibility (or make it optional) and commit to medium format lenses mount options. even a 645 lens covers Square film full frame, without extra optics that sacrifice image quality and reduce light transmission. Also, the shutter would benefit greatly from 1/500 speed, the 800 ISO speed is too high to shoot wide open in sunlight and this would have helped (ND filters are an option but being an SLR camera the viewfinder would get dim very fast). It’s clear that it can be achieved with modern electronic shutters as the MiNT camera has it.
I would rather pay $1000 or more for a no-compromise perfect camera than $600 for one with so much deficiencies. A good step-up from crappy Lomo cameras and much better than the disaster that is the MiNT cameras, but not good enough. Maybe for a third version they’ll get it right and I would be finally able to consider getting one.

Soooo this seems like an instant version of like a 35 mm camera.

Why don’t any of these companies use Polaroid? Does Polaroid not allow It?

Polaroid’s intellectual property is more safely guarded when it comes to cameras and processors. Also, Polaroid film requires a mirror inside the camera, unlike Fuji, so it’s a lot more challenging and costly to design/manufacture Polaroid compatible cameras.

I think in your review you are not discussing enough the effect of the built-in 2x teleconverter. Affecting both the exposure (effectively making the film behave more like iso200) and depth of field.
You are describing it as shooting f1.9 lens with iso800, which is not correct with the included teleconverter.

This is interesting Frank, definitely should have spent some time on the effects of the teleconverter on exposure settings.

Also interested in how the teleconverter affects focal length of the lens. I’m wondering about wide angle lenses since most 2x teleconverters can’t accommodate lenses wider than around 70mm.
