Didn’t she take Gan’s spot in 2020 after she appealed? So she should know that the spot is not guaranteed till the selection process is completed? The only difference is Gan did not complain and make a big fuss

QTW stole Gan's chance in 2021 (Gan made it to B cut but QTW didn't). 3 years later, Gan still made it to B cut, QTW still failed to make it and now she's trying to pull the same trick. When it didn't go her way, she rant like a spoiled child. All these while Gan didn't say a thing. If QTW wanna make the cut, get yourself qualified for B cut FIRST.

So not going and not being able to continue ones legacy or get a final swan song is a bigger disappointment than getting her team disqualified huh. Says a lot.

Exactly. I'm shocked people just brushed away all her endless hours of training only to be shelved aside at the last minute. I feel this is an unfortunate event for both QTW and Gan as well. As someone who has watched her swim for several years, I will always be proud of her (even attended an event where she was a speaker and was touched by her resilience). By the discouraging comments I've read, unfortunately, we have not progressed much in terms of empathy and compassion as a society.
When she wins medals for us, everyone cheers for her. But when she didn't, people are so ready to criticise her - much like what Schooling has experienced. Some even dare bring up that because of her mistake in entering the pool early she caused a disqualification in the Asian Games - why is that relevant? Surely, she is the one that feels the most guilty and would've never wanted for that to happen. It's always easy to criticise as a keyboard warrior, who has done nothing for the country. Always feel bad for our competitive swimmers.
Regardless QTW or Gan representing us, both are representing Singapore and we should be proud for both.

It means you seem to peak at selection time. Jing Wen should have gone in 2020 Olympics. And now, the better choice is Gan! It's not about youth. It's about "attitude ", which seems to be fight to qualify and then try your best to keep up with the last swimmer at the Olympics heats .

If you are too old and underperforming, you are indeed too old. Nothing personal. When you put yourself on display, you have to accept being evaluated. If you want to be showered with fake praises and life-long privileges, find another career please. We should thank her for the contribution, but be truthful to the performance.

As long as the selection process is fair, what's wrong? There may be more considerations beyond personal glory, like succession planning, providing experience to potential athletes. Everyone should be given the chance, regardless of past achievements. We should all thank her for the contribution, instead of sowing discord like this.

SAQ is damn inconsistency. In 2021, they applied the AQUA rule for prioritisation of athlete selection after Quah appeal when they gave Quah's universality placement priority over Gan's B cut invitation. Now they dont follow the priority rule even when the rule says relay swimmer has priority over B cut invited swimmer.

no you are wrong. 2021 they made the same decision, Quah appealed and it was the appeal committee (made up of different people) who eventually pick Quah. But the appeal committee probably misunderstood the spirit of the universality and OCT. it was a mistake to send Quah then. so in 2023, SAQ made it a policy to state that OCT candidates have priority over universality pick. i believe the swimmers would have known about this policy, according to various veteran swimmers who spoke up.
SAQ was always quite consistent regarding this, they try to follow the spirit of the olympics.

    • @jamesl2590

Its a fact what. Why is old age as a reason considered insulting in sports? Should they reject the younger better performing athlete and lie that he or she lack experience even though their performance is better than Quah Ting Wen?? Either way, the association offends people. The association has to either say the truth to Quah Ting Wen or lie to the better performing athlete. Make that choice.

Dont be ignorant. Age is just a number. Gan is a middle distance swimmer while Quah is a sprinter. Gan last race in the 100 m free in 2019.
