    The way the recall was "supposed" to work was...1) if the Jeep had the factory hitch, no action was taken. 2) if the Jeep had no hitch, no action was taken. 3) if the Jeep had an aftermarket hitch that hangs down lower, then the dealer would replace the aftermarket hitch with a factory one. However, some dealers were unclear on the criteria, so some customers with no hitch were able to get a factory one installed. I know that people were rightfully denied the hitch at some dealerships, only to finally find a dealership that was confused and would put a hitch on. So some people got lucky.

    The "by yourself method" is to leave the three bolts in the fuel tank skid that aren't used for the hitch... The hitch has oversize holes fit over two of the bolts and the third one is forward of where the hitch mounts on the driver's side... Much easier than dropping the fuel tank skid...

    Dan my friend, never a doubt in my mind, I knew you could do it. I've got a bunch of years on you and hitch installs was one of my many jobs shortly before I retired and I rarely required help even on the heaviest of hitches. It's a matter of brains, muscle, leverage and determination. And of course common sense. Great job as usual. God bless and stay well.

    I went to a u-pull 6 weeks ago to find a gas tank skid plate for my 2000 wj for the second time ( there hard to find not rusted out in n.y.) was about to give up and pay the 250. to 300. for a new one but found one that looked new ( holy crap). 3 hours later I gave up , couldn't get the frozen trailer hitch bolts out, the 2 that didn't hold the gas tank skid in. so I looked at a few more wjs and found one that was good with no trailer hitch , an hour later i had my skid plate. I was ready to pay 50 to 75 for it, they bloo me away , charged 20 bucks including the straps . jeeps been down for 5 years, it will be running soon. sorry for the long story just to say I wish they put the hitch on your way. always enjoy your videos, thanks.

    Rather than try to balance everything on a jack, it's way easier to just jack up under the skid plate until it starts to lift the rear, which will hold everything in place while you install the hitch - especially if you have a buddy to help lift the hitch into position. If you don't, then you can use a jack stand or similar to support the opposite side close enough while you position and start the bolts on the first side (speaking from experience). When you started off with how important it is to have an empty tank, I was like WTH is he doing?!? LOL Props for creativity working alone though! 🙂

    Fantastic video! Thank you for doing this. I’m replacing the skid plate on my son’s Jeep and I really didn’t want to disturb the bumper mounting hardware. It looks like the existing plate is so shot I’ll be able to pull it out in pice without pulling the hitch. Knowing where bolts are it’s big help.

    Northeast ZJ owner here in South Central Pa. Thankfully my '98 5.9 Limited (Stone White, loaded!) has nowhere near that much rust. The only bad spot is the front seat rear outer frame to floor bolts, the brackets are there but the floor is gone is a 3" by 4" area. I cut the entire floor out of a Arizona '95 ZJ to be welded in soon. Will be my first RUclips video, I hope! I stripped the '95 of all its body parts for future ZJ use. I love to watch your videos; I learn a lot from the content and where the pitfalls are. It's awesome to see people so enthused and keeping these great old ZJ's and WJ's going, making them better than factory in some cases. I'm always stoked when you drop a new video, there is so much to learn from watching, made for us real world owners. My 99 Laredo doesn't have a trailer hitch, I need to hit the Jeep salvage yard and pick one up.
    I'm lucky to have a local Jeep-only salvage yard, pretty much everything made from the 80's up to the WK. They only save the good parts and complete Jeeps for rebuilding. Thats where the 5.9 Limited came from. Also picked up a '03 Vin J 4.7 HO with 19k miles for 750$ and heard it run before it was pulled. You should do a 4.7 HO swap, maybe I'll do one!

    Got mix feeling about the hitch being sandwiched, shouldn't be a problem i guess.
    Is anti seize a good call for those bolts or loctite is equally ok, heck it might just work dry.

    Why did you mount the tow receiver above the tank skid plate? It can go underneath, and since it doesn't share all the bolts (only 2 out of 3 per side I think) with the tank, you don't even have to support/fiddle with the tank skid plate mountings? Seems much easier than what you did?
    *Oh ok 30s later, if alone its actually easier this way...

      I have a 2004 WJ that was having the same problem years ago. The problem was the big black wire that's in the driver's side door that's located in that boot. Check and make sure those wires in that boot aren't broke. This is a common problem. I recommend you replace that entire wire rather than solder it back together. It kept breaking on me until I replaced it. If you search RUclips you'll find many videos on it. Just type Jeep WJ door wire harness. Loads of videos will pop up. Like I said, it's a common problem.

    The reason for the recall was due to rear end collisions that had numerous WJ's that caught fire. Solution was to reinforce the fuel tank by adding the tow hitch frame. very informative. just got a WJ. No hitch on mine. Seems the recall is ONLY for those that have a 3rd party hitch on it. If you had that, then the dealer would change it out for a factory hitch. If yours had no hitch, they dont do anything

    • @ProjectDanH
      @ProjectDanH  4 месяца назад +2

      I heard the opposite... Something had to be there to protect the tank. If you had an aftermarket one or a factory one you were protected.. if you had nothing they needed to put something there

    I called the dealer for my hitch, I have a 96 ZJ, indeed it was on the list and set an appointment 3 months from then. Had to wait for the part then time to do so.
    When I got there 3 months later and they denied me my hitch in person saying I needed to already have one installed? From what I understand of the recall they were to install it as a crash bar to protect the tank in an accident?
    Doesn't really matter now, I just went to the pull yard and grabbed one for free anyway, had $30 credit 🎉
    Still I'd like to know if I'm wrong on that or..?

  • @joequixotic3039
    @joequixotic3039 2 года назад

    I'm going to do the exact opposite at some point. My WJ has the factory hitch or got the recall at some point. I was lucky enough to find an uncut factory rear bumper in my paint color.
    I'm going to do it when i do a gas tank tuck to improve the departure angle but I'm going to modify my trailer hitch, flipping the receiver on top of the horizontal bar so it will come out of the vertical surface of the bumper and can be "hidden" with a receiver cover plug. It shouldn't reduce the rear collision safety because the tank will be even more protected, I'll just need a drop hitch.

      @@ProjectDanH I'm not sure if I'll film but I'm going to try to do bodywork like Spiral Designs and the gas tank tuck like martinbuilt but my twist is going to be using flanging tools and "spot welds" for the sheet metal work so I don't have to butt-weld all of the seams. I'll also do an HK Offroad style hidden winch bumper, possibly an XJ style radiator conversion, long arms and Dana 50 or 60 axle swaps with a tire size between 33" and 37" probably. Also HK Offroad style rock sliders. I don't want to lift it too much so the objective will be to get maximum stuff and a lot of droop. I might have to do something like the Rudicon front shocks but I'll do a lower profile shock hoop and hood blisters instead of hood holes. I have an idea for anti-sway bar "disconnects" but it's a bit experimental so I'm going to keep my mouth shut on that.
      I might try to enlarge my spare tire well to fit a matching spare and "lift" my rear carpet to cover it flat. I want to do a cargo drawer/rear bed platform for an overlanding/car camping setup. If I don't enlarge the spare tire well, I'll make a swinging tire carrier for the rear bumper with Jerry Can storage too.
      Just don't hold your breath, I have to build my shop first which looks like it will probably be winter 2024 before I can start on big Jeep projects.

      I had the recall done on mine. When you receive the recall notice it shows what they do based on your set up. If you have an aftermarket hitch, they install the factory style to replace it. If you have no hitch they do nothing. I guess the problem comes from the aftermarket hitches causing the problem.?. But the actual recall notice shows they only give a new hitch if you have an aftermarket hitch installed.
