This was a great analysis of Judai. I always saw him as the protagonist who was just different. I mean Yuma was also clueless, but even he noticed at the end that Kotori loved him. So Judai not noticing Asuka's feelings, doesn't make sense unless he chose to ignore it in a way or just never felt that way. Judai and Johan always were so special to each other (first meeting was like love at first sight) and even if the writers chose to leave it as a friendship it's obvious there was more.
Yu-Gi-Oh GX in general is "queer coded" by that I mean some characters are clearly LGBTQ+; Crowler is Trans, Pharaoh Abidos was gay AF, Yubel is Trans too Jadens literal soulmate is Yubel Jaden cared a little too much for Jesse, Jesse is Sub is feminine and twink-ish Jesse's ace monster is RAINBOW Dragon FFS!
You said in this video that no one else has ever talked this but someone has a bit. I recommend you watch Melonteee's The Importance of Johan (Jesse) Andersen video, that is a video that has talked about Jaden and Jesse's gayness for each other.
Great video! I agree with most if not all of the points you've made here. I actually think it might be worth another dive into the GX dub, because I have talked to people who say Jaden is LGBTQ in that depiction as well. Also, would love to see a video about the depiction of male-male relationships in anime/manga, I think that would be really interested. Definitely worth looking at major series like Naruto, Berserk, HxH, etc. which have deep male friendships that /might/ be of a different nature.

Hey! Woah, man, this was such a good video. I don’t often delve into the more analytical side of Yu-Gi-Oh! videos because while they have such potential they can also be… letdowns? But in any case, I am very glad I gave this one a shot, I loved it! I think there are some things to be explored in regards to the Yubel-Johan-Judai love triangle (if it is… apt to call it that?). I went through all of the comments and saw it brought up a few times, but interestingly enough I think parallels can be drawn between them and Hans Christian Andersen's (haha) *The Snow Queen*. Specifically towards the end when Gerda saves Kai from the Snow Queen’s frozen lake with a kiss. Gerda cries warm tears on him and thaws his heart. Sort of like Judai’s fiery love for Johan melting… the ice in his soul? If I am remembering what happened correctly? Of course, there is nothing explicitly stated regarding inspiration being taken but I think it is interesting at the very least. Also! Asuka also has a very obvious love for duelling. But Judai doesn’t appear to harbour the same feelings that he does towards Johan for her. Asuka states multiple times that her true love is for duelling (during the several different love-based duels she has to go through), similarly to Judai and Johan. And yet, as you have already established, her love for Judai is unrequited. One could argue that this is because Asuka isn’t quite as similar to Judai as Johan is, and therefore Judai feels unable to connect to her in the same way as he did with Johan, but because of this I still don’t think Judai and Johan’s relationship is *solely* because of their shared love of duelling. And as another comment has pointed out, Johan’s rainbow-based deck is curious. He had an insect deck in the manga, so the fact that it was changed to feature rainbows instead is rather interesting. But then again, a lot of decks were changed. An entire plot was, in fact! At the very least, the coincidental similarities to Steven Universe’s whole crystal thing are amusing. Something something Rainbow Neos something something fusion? In all seriousness, though, I reckon that there’s always lots more to be said but that would simply be much too tiresome. I think he's Asexual really his love for dueling is big bigger then any romantic and there are a bunch of episodes where there is a "romantic" jaden/judai would kinda disregard it in a way I just think he's Asexual he's focus more on dueling then romance
I feel like it's more because before the events of gx, he was very sheltered due to the yubel stuff. So it's more of him just being really clueless about relationships..

After rewatching gx a couple of times in the span of this year, i came to the conclusion that jaden, before remembering all the things about yubel in the past life, like you said, def looks like a guy that has no feelings for girls at all and likes johan abit too much lol, either in a gay way or a "love for dueling" kind of way like you said in the vid, but at the end of the fight with yubel, that whole relationship thing with johan comes to an end i think when jaden remembers what happened to him in the past life, and after remembering he even says to syrus that he is going on a trip to become a man, meaning that he remembers that he swore to love yubel for all of time and is going to make a huge sacrifice by giving up on some things he would have liked to do for the better good of yubel, because he loves yubel(my opinnion, but at the minimum he really really cares for yubel) even said that in the next episode preview in the end of ep155,
Not to mention that i did alot of research on this myself, and found out in a site for yugioh tv tropes that the final fight against yubel was very very similiarly modelled like a jewish wedding lmao
And in season 4, jaden seems to REALLY care for yubel, even friendly mocking each other like old couples do, even tho they are VERY good friends with jesse/johan, he knows that he chose to be with yubel in the long run, litterally fused himself with the card spirit, and that whole hug in the end of ep155 really puts an end to the debate imo, interesting video tho, love to see gx vids!

The reason I didn't want to get into the whole Yubel thing is because Yubel seems really abusive? And like as much as I love her character and their relationship it feels like a topic that needs its own video to really dive into the complexities of it. If Judai does love her it's only because she murders like thousands of people (more?) until he gives in and decides loving her is what he needs to do to stop it? In real world terms she is seriously emotionally abusing a minor (killing his friends lol) until that minor decides that it is actually HIS fault and that he just needs to be in love with her and that will fix it? She does abuse him alot, on the other hand, she doesnt do it for "revenge" or stuff like that, the dub made it seems so but thats just bcuz the 4kids dub loves to twist the plot and dialogue so much that it can seem to be a whole other person. But back to the point and the sub, yubel after spending time in space in grief after beeing "tossed out" and also after beeing tortured and corrupted by the "light of destruction" is warped into believing that showing love to another person is by making them suffer, ALOT XD, thats why yubel could cope with her beeing tossed out to space by jaden because yubel thought that he loved them so much thats why he made them suffer, so in return, yubel tries to do the same to him, make him suffer as much (if not more) then yubel was suffering. Thats one thing, but also, how much of that thing is bcuz of the light of destruction? Because in the end of the final episode of season 3 she even wants to collapse all the dimensions and wipe them all out, does yubel want this or the light? So yubel well may be completely gone in the head at that point and is beeing controlled, and the only thing that remains of yubel is her memories and love for jaden.

I feel like at the point of when the super fusion happened between them, jaden did it for his friends, yubel (so he could free them from the light of destructions corruption), and himself, to repay for him sending her out witch caused all of that shit. For love? Mehh, even i dont know at that point, seems too early for that. But there is one thing, after they fused, they were both gone for like some months time, on a journey together, and i think that in that time they really sorted all the stuff out, even managing to use yubels powers. Also in season 4, after having some issues with ppl at first because he was now so different, literally two ppl, at the end of the season, when yubel finally comes out, the banter they have, jaden's thoughts, the thank you speach to yubel in the fight with yugi and the fusion of neos wiseman, it seems pretty damn solid to make me think that they indeed figured out each other, and jaden, maybe not at first, but now truly, maybe not loves them(asexual?), but really cares for them like i think none other in gx, on one hand, maybe thats bcuz he doesnt have a choice at that point, but idk, he seems pretty damn happy at the end of gx :Dd but also a part of me think that way because i like yubel as a character really much, because they are pretty deep, and yubel is pretty badass. i agree with Judai has no feeling and interested for girl in the first two seasons, he just really enjoy dueling. However, in season 3, Judai and Johan become fast friend the first time they met immediately. Although some people say the relationship between Johan and Judai come in the end after Judai recalled his memories of his pervious life. In my opinion, the story of Judai past life is past life, and this life is this life. Let me put in this way, yami yugi and yugi are totally different person and two separate souls, and they are not the same person. So even Judai loved yubel in his past life, it nothing doing with Judai now then . But Judai really enjoys Johan company, so this is why I think Judai and Johan are true love. At least in season 3, Judai not really like being with Yubel and he hates Yubel's hurting his friends. What's more, in the end of season 3, yubel fused with Judai, like a new person. I mean Judai-yubel is not the original Judai anymore. Judai-yubel still had Judai's memory but he had become someone else, so the original Judai is gone. But before Judai fused with yubel, Judai favourite person must be Johan.

Not sure if you saw the conversation I had with the other commenter about Judai and Yubel, but what you said about Judai becoming a different person really fits perfectly and makes so much sense! I’ve always been trying to understand why Judai acts so differently towards Johan in Season 4. Your explanation is really great. Judai looks and acts completely different. It stands to reason that he’s not just influenced by his bad experiences. He is also literally a different person because he is fused with Yubel. That explains such a drastic shift in his feelings toward Johan
Thank you for your comments. but I don't think the relationship between judai and johan changed even in season4. Judai and his classmates ( shou, asuka and manjome) were indifferent and judai actually told them to go away. At least from what I can see, Judai doesn't like to be around with them. However, judai is not cold to johan . When they dueling with Fujiwara, judai and yohan literally laughed and talked. So judai seems to be really enjoy spending time with yohan. I think the their bonding is very deep. But we definitely need to see more of Johan screentime in season 4. (poor Jim, he just disappeared lol)

I think season 3 was more about saving a friend, and Jaden trying to get rid of his guilt thinking Jesses disappearing being his fault. I've seen this show more times then I care to admit, and It didn't seem anything like that. Now to be fair I have only seen the dub.
If you’ve only seen the dub then you nothing I’m saying applies. Everything I talk about here is 100% erased in the dub. I recommend the sub next time you rewatch for many reasons, but mostly just because it’s genuinely a more interesting and nuanced show
I think you would enjoy the yugio gx video from dilfosaur a lot. She also talked briefly about Johan/Judai. Aside from this recommendation, I just want to say: nice video!
i love seeing someone make a video on this, especially from a perspective that had no intention of reading the characters in such a way. ive noticed so many people identify with judai and definitely see him represent the lgbt experience. i remember a decade ago loving judai and johan together, i love the way you say johan is basically the personification of judai's love of duelling because in all honesty he kind of is. another aspect of their bond that i think is super memorable is how johan sees judai for who he is, aka not a hero, combined with them both being able to see spirits (which chazz can but he never /talks/ about it and it hasnt manifested in the same way) , i think johan is basically the one character who understands judai the most on a personal level i think it absolutely fits the core themes of judai if he were to be lgbt, hes the protagonist with a deck built around fusion summoning, speaking of fusion summoning, i know yugioh and romance dont go hand in hand because thats not the shows focus but, i just personally find the existence of rainbow neos to be extremely heartwarming, theres a lot to be said about yubel in terms of judai being lgbt (and also the fact that yubel literally became intersex) but i think its more impactful to not talk about the sub and what it had, but the dub and what they took out/ censored, i think the biggest nod to even people in the 2000s reading the characters of yubel and judai as lgbt were the efforts that 4kids went to to hide it. they had to explicity turn yubel into a woman, and make sure that johan had special purple around him when yubel spoke through his body, like i just think its telling that 4kids took so much effort to say "hey kids this isnt gay at all" i also like what you said about asuka and i think thats just important for the overall theme of the show, i.e growing up/ coming of age, its heartbreaking to see but its very relatable (of course the discussion of growing up for yugioh gx also has a lot on representations of mental illness, abuse and duelling also as a metaphor of judais will to live but ahhh i must stop my stream of words soon) anyway sorry for rambling in your comment section haha, thanks for such a good vid

Let's face it that Judai/Jaden is probably pansexual instead of homosexual (Johan/Jesse is obviously homosexual though, not because Johan/Jesse has rainbow dragon but because he literally never showed any interests in girls whatsoever and Johan/Jesse put Judai/Jaden's safety above everyone else's and Johan/Jesse even said that he would sacrifice himself to protect Judai/Jaden if he had to in the original Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh GX at least).
I understand why you have your interpretation but you're forgetting various other context in the show that point to judai not being LGBT including but not limited to Yubel and judai's origin story clearly shows and states yubel attack people who tried to be on friendly terms with judai, yubel even comaroseing an adult man, osamu, when judai was like what 7? So yubel's idea of who judai's interested in was most likely skewed at the time Since judai was the one who sent yubel to space it'd make sense he'd feel guilty over anything yubel related, and really have you never been motivated to do right because of guilt before? It should also be noted that out of all of judai's human friends Johan was the first one who didn't see him as some kind of superman figure and was the only one who didn't have to rely on him to do everything. Also judai wanted to rescue sigfried's soldiers, he even asks about them when he defeats bronn which when combined with his guilt points more twords a hero complex then anything, this is proven more or less when bronn uses a card that would cause judai's friends to die if he attacks and judai simply refuses to attack. And regardless of how you interpret his Johan relations at the end of the day he chose yubel, now where exactly a hermaphrodite falls under the gender scale is very much up for interpretation and so depending on your view that could be streight or LGBT or some other sexuality, so if you think loving a hermaphrodite is LGBT then sure.
Even though Judai felt guilty by the whole Yubel situation he still cared about Johan the most out of all of his friends that only hearing that Johan is still alive, and not any of his other friends, is not enough to make him go on.

I'd disagree. The thing is, if you want to view the series through the lens of LGBTQ+ being propagated today, you're likely to see it as such since you're looking for it. However, if you look at it through the lens of when it was released, when the world wasn't obsessed with such things, then it paints a different picture. Jaden is a stereotypical "dim" protagonist who doesn't understand female attraction, similiar to goku, naruto, etc. in their youths. That's the trope he's playing into during the first 3 seasons. As for Jesse, he was Jaden's friend, his only true friend. Everyone else was kinda there with him because they had to be or because they depended on him, whereas Jesse properly wanted to be. They are just two male best friends, that's it, I don't think there's any romantic feelings involved at all. It's just that there's so few stories about true male friendship that when one does show up they're immediately given the "g*y" treatment.
Bromance was big back then in shows and in anime so it never came off to me as gay... Just 2 dudes who acknowledge each other as rivals and as friends ...
The ace lenses might be stuck on too tight as one but to me you can't just point to two characters and say they have a special and close bond and imply it thus must be romantic and/or sexual. Cool be has a special relationship with Jesse but that's all you have, you need to then finish the leap to romantic.
Another card game anime that does this and is doing all but screaming itis Cardfight Vanguard. Particularly Legion Mate and G - Giris Crisis and G - Stride Gate. Legion Mate is similar to season 3 of GX, but thw main character is the one who vanished, and his long time hero/friend/rival who became final antognist in the previous arc does everything to find him. Giris Crisis and Stride Gate's core major plot is Luna and Am's relationship, which was even more heavy handded with the themeing. Honestly if the genre is your thing I reccomend watching it.

Jaden yuki is one few characters if made today would definitely be made one. Surprisily manga version is different.

After rewatching gx a couple of times in the span of this year, i came to the conclusion that jaden, before remembering all the things about yubel in the past life, like you said, def looks like a guy that has no feelings for girls at all and likes johan abit too much lol, either in a gay way or a "love for dueling" kind of way like you said in the vid, but at the end of the fight with yubel, that whole relationship thing with johan comes to an end i think when jaden remembers what happened to him in the past life, and after remembering he even says to syrus that he is going on a trip to become a man, meaning that he remembers that he swore to love yubel for all of time and is going to make a huge sacrifice by giving up on some things he would have liked to do for the better good of yubel, because he loves yubel(my opinnion, but at the minimum he really really cares for yubel) even said that in the next episode preview in the end of ep155,
Not to mention that i did alot of research on this myself, and found out in a site for yugioh tv tropes that the final fight against yubel was very very similiarly modelled like a jewish wedding lmao
And in season 4, jaden seems to REALLY care for yubel, even friendly mocking each other like old couples do, even tho they are VERY good friends with jesse/johan, he knows that he chose to be with yubel in the long run, litterally fused himself with the card spirit, and that whole hug in the end of ep155 really puts an end to the debate imo, interesting video tho, love to see gx vids!
@@ignaspumputis4164 That's fair. I probably shouldn't have made a video like this without watching them more closely. The reason I didn't want to get into the whole Yubel thing is because Yubel seems really abusive? And like as much as I love her character and their relationship it feels like a topic that needs its own video to really dive into the complexities of it. If Judai does love her it's only because she murders like thousands of people (more?) until he gives in and decides loving her is what he needs to do to stop it? In real world terms she is seriously emotionally abusing a minor (killing his friends lol) until that minor decides that it is actually HIS fault and that he just needs to be in love with her and that will fix it? Don't get me wrong I actually really like their relationship in Season 4 and I don't take it that seriously, but when talking specifically about Judai's romantic interests it really feels like he didn't choose Yubel, Yubel pretty much forced him to love her.
That said, you are 100% right, and I'm an idiot for making this video and not addressing this. It's a major elephant in the room and no conversation about this topic is complete without talking about it. Real world implications of abuse aside, you've convinced me that Judai "chooses" Yubel over Johan. In fact, one thing I didn't say in the video is that I never understood why in Season 4, nothing feels the same between Judai and Johan and your answer perfectly explains that. So thanks for this comment. At some point once I rewatch the end of Season 3 and Season 4, I might make a follow up to this video where I talk about some of this stuff. She does abuse him alot, on the other hand, she doesnt do it for "revenge" or stuff like that, the dub made it seems so but thats just bcuz the 4kids dub loves to twist the plot and dialogue so much that it can seem to be a whole other person. But back to the point and the sub, yubel after spending time in space in grief after beeing "tossed out" and also after beeing tortured and corrupted by the "light of destruction" is warped into believing that showing love to another person is by making them suffer, ALOT XD, thats why yubel could cope with her beeing tossed out to space by jaden because yubel thought that he loved them so much thats why he made them suffer, so in return, yubel tries to do the same to him, make him suffer as much (if not more) then yubel was suffering. Thats one thing, but also, how much of that thing is bcuz of the light of destruction? Because in the end of the final episode of season 3 she even wants to collapse all the dimensions and wipe them all out, does yubel want this or the light? So yubel well may be completely gone in the head at that point and is beeing controlled, and the only thing that remains of yubel is her memories and love for jaden.

I feel like at the point of when the super fusion happened between them, jaden did it for his friends, yubel (so he could free them from the light of destructions corruption), and himself, to repay for him sending her out witch caused all of that shit. For love? Mehh, even i dont know at that point, seems too early for that. But there is one thing, after they fused, they were both gone for like some months time, on a journey together, and i think that in that time they really sorted all the stuff out, even managing to use yubels powers. Also in season 4, after having some issues with ppl at first because he was now so different, literally two ppl, at the end of the season, when yubel finally comes out, the banter they have, jaden's thoughts, the thank you speach to yubel in the fight with yugi and the fusion of neos wiseman, it seems pretty damn solid to make me think that they indeed figured out each other, and jaden, maybe not at first, but now truly, maybe not loves them(asexual?), but really cares for them like i think none other in gx, on one hand, maybe thats bcuz he doesnt have a choice at that point, but idk, he seems pretty damn happy at the end of gx :Dd but also a part of me think that way because i like yubel as a character really much, because they are pretty deep, and yubel is pretty badass. i agree with Judai has no feeling and interested for girl in the first two seasons, he just really enjoy dueling. However, in season 3, Judai and Johan become fast friend the first time they met immediately. Although some people say the relationship between Johan and Judai come in the end after Judai recalled his memories of his pervious life. In my opinion, the story of Judai past life is past life, and this life is this life. Let me put in this way, yami yugi and yugi are totally different person and two separate souls, and they are not the same person. So even Judai loved yubel in his past life, it nothing doing with Judai now then . But Judai really enjoys Johan company, so this is why I think Judai and Johan are true love. At least in season 3, Judai not really like being with Yubel and he hates Yubel's hurting his friends.
What's more, in the end of season 3, yubel fused with Judai, like a new person. I mean Judai-yubel is not the original Judai anymore. Judai-yubel still had Judai's memory but he had become someone else, so the original Judai is gone. But before Judai fused with yubel, Judai favourite person must be Johan.

Not sure if you saw the conversation I had with the other commenter about Judai and Yubel, but what you said about Judai becoming a different person really fits perfectly and makes so much sense! I’ve always been trying to understand why Judai acts so differently towards Johan in Season 4. Your explanation is really great. Judai looks and acts completely different. It stands to reason that he’s not just influenced by his bad experiences. He is also literally a different person because he is fused with Yubel. That explains such a drastic shift in his feelings toward Johan
Thank you for your comments. but I don't think the relationship between judai and johan changed even in season4. Judai and his classmates ( shou, asuka and manjome) were indifferent and judai actually told them to go away. At least from what I can see, Judai doesn't like to be around with them. However, judai is not cold to johan . When they dueling with Fujiwara, judai and yohan literally laughed and talked. So judai seems to be really enjoy spending time with yohan.
I think the their bonding is very deep. But we definitely need to see more of Johan screentime in season 4. (poor Jim, he just disappeared lol)

I think season 3 was more about saving a friend, and Jaden trying to get rid of his guilt thinking Jesses disappearing being his fault. I've seen this show more times then I care to admit, and It didn't seem anything like that. Now to be fair I have only seen the dub.
If you’ve only seen the dub then you nothing I’m saying applies. Everything I talk about here is 100% erased in the dub. I recommend the sub next time you rewatch for many reasons, but mostly just because it’s genuinely a more interesting and nuanced show
I think you would enjoy the yugio gx video from dilfosaur a lot. She also talked briefly about Johan/Judai.

i love seeing someone make a video on this, especially from a perspective that had no intention of reading the characters in such a way. ive noticed so many people identify with judai and definitely see him represent the lgbt experience.
i remember a decade ago loving judai and johan together, i love the way you say johan is basically the personification of judai's love of duelling because in all honesty he kind of is. another aspect of their bond that i think is super memorable is how johan sees judai for who he is, aka not a hero, combined with them both being able to see spirits (which chazz can but he never /talks/ about it and it hasnt manifested in the same way) , i think johan is basically the one character who understands judai the most on a personal level
i think it absolutely fits the core themes of judai if he were to be lgbt, hes the protagonist with a deck built around fusion summoning,
speaking of fusion summoning, i know yugioh and romance dont go hand in hand because thats not the shows focus but, i just personally find the existence of rainbow neos to be extremely heartwarming,
theres a lot to be said about yubel in terms of judai being lgbt (and also the fact that yubel literally became intersex) but i think its more impactful to not talk about the sub and what it had, but the dub and what they took out/ censored,
i think the biggest nod to even people in the 2000s reading the characters of yubel and judai as lgbt were the efforts that 4kids went to to hide it. they had to explicity turn yubel into a woman, and make sure that johan had special purple around him when yubel spoke through his body, like i just think its telling that 4kids took so much effort to say "hey kids this isnt gay at all"
i also like what you said about asuka and i think thats just important for the overall theme of the show, i.e growing up/ coming of age, its heartbreaking to see but its very relatable (of course the discussion of growing up for yugioh gx also has a lot on representations of mental illness, abuse and duelling also as a metaphor of judais will to live but ahhh i must stop my stream of words soon)

Let's face it that Judai/Jaden is probably pansexual instead of homosexual (Johan/Jesse is obviously homosexual though, not because Johan/Jesse has rainbow dragon but because he literally never showed any interests in girls whatsoever and Johan/Jesse put Judai/Jaden's safety above everyone else's and Johan/Jesse even said that he would sacrifice himself to protect Judai/Jaden if he had to in the original Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh GX at least).

I understand why you have your interpretation but you're forgetting various other context in the show that point to judai not being LGBT including but not limited to
Yubel and judai's origin story clearly shows and states yubel attack people who tried to be on friendly terms with judai, yubel even comaroseing an adult man, osamu, when judai was like what 7? So yubel's idea of who judai's interested in was most likely skewed at the time
Since judai was the one who sent yubel to space it'd make sense he'd feel guilty over anything yubel related, and really have you never been motivated to do right because of guilt before?
It should also be noted that out of all of judai's human friends Johan was the first one who didn't see him as some kind of superman figure and was the only one who didn't have to rely on him to do everything.
Also judai wanted to rescue sigfried's soldiers, he even asks about them when he defeats bronn which when combined with his guilt points more twords a hero complex then anything, this is proven more or less when bronn uses a card that would cause judai's friends to die if he attacks and judai simply refuses to attack.
And regardless of how you interpret his Johan relations at the end of the day he chose yubel, now where exactly a hermaphrodite falls under the gender scale is very much up for interpretation and so depending on your view that could be streight or LGBT or some other sexuality, so if you think loving a hermaphrodite is LGBT then sure.
Even though Judai felt guilty by the whole Yubel situation he still cared about Johan the most out of all of his friends that only hearing that Johan is still alive, and not any of his other friends, is not enough to make him go on.

The thing is, if you want to view the series through the lens of LGBTQ+ being propagated today, you're likely to see it as such since you're looking for it. However, if you look at it through the lens of when it was released, when the world wasn't obsessed with such things, then it paints a different picture.
Jaden is a stereotypical "dim" protagonist who doesn't understand female attraction, similiar to goku, naruto, etc. in their youths. That's the trope he's playing into during the first 3 seasons.
As for Jesse, he was Jaden's friend, his only true friend. Everyone else was kinda there with him because they had to be or because they depended on him, whereas Jesse properly wanted to be. They are just two male best friends, that's it, I don't think there's any romantic feelings involved at all. It's just that there's so few stories about true male friendship that when one does show up they're immediately given the "g*y" treatment.

The ace lenses might be stuck on too tight as one but to me you can't just point to two characters and say they have a special and close bond and imply it thus must be romantic and/or sexual. Cool be has a special relationship with Jesse but that's all you have, you need to then finish the leap to romantic.

Particularly Legion Mate and G - Giris Crisis and G - Stride Gate. Legion Mate is similar to season 3 of GX, but thw main character is the one who vanished, and his long time hero/friend/rival who became final antognist in the previous arc does everything to find him.
Giris Crisis and Stride Gate's core major plot is Luna and Am's relationship, which was even more heavy handded with the themeing.
Honestly if the genre is your thing I reccomend watching it.
