Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! I want to respect your questions, so there's a lot here. I can accept if it's a TL;DR lol. I do think that there's a combination of the two going on, but generally I totally agree that it's an excuse. I do stand by what I said that Eternals might be the only movie in all of the MCU where I'll concede that a major part of the problem is that they needed more time. But that comes with caveats. Maybe, if the rest of Phases 4 and 5 had been stellar, I would end it there. But, it functions as an excuse because it just speaks to the larger problem at Marvel. How was it possibly okay that they got together this group of legendary actors and the most recent Best Picture winner (who used all of her Oscar clout on this gig only to fall in flames because of this) if they didn't have a working script that had time for all of the characters? Even if it is true that it is genuinely impossible to develop each character in the time they had (which I'm not actually conceding), then that means they have to reduce the amount of characters? No one forced them to make Eternals. At the end of the day, it's Marvel to make a good film. As for whether it is possible to make a good movie with that many new characters, despite all my criticism I don't want to cross the line into pretending that I actually do know what it takes to be a screenwriter or a filmmaker, so I can't definitively say either way. What I can say is that the glaringly obvious issues with the movie that aren't related to time and the aforementioned audacity of them sloppily dropping the ball and making all of these talented creatives look bad in the process means that they're not entitled to me giving them the benefit of the doubt in answering the question. Moreover, I'm TOTALLY unconvinced that giving them more time with a TV show would have fixed the problem because *gestures broadly at the state of most of the rest of the Marvel TV shows*. The issues related to character development at Marvel in Phases 4 and 5 have consistently been about them trying to churn out the content machine at the cost of good scripts. They have been totally disinterested in making sure that they have something special and compelling before moving forward. I feel like almost every project has had to undergo major reshoots? I'm supposed to believe they would have taken Makkari on an emotional, cathartic journey when they can't even make me feel anything for Nick Fury? Nahhhhhh. If Eternals was 6 episodes, I'm convinced that at least 3 of them would have been basically wasted and the other 3 would have been this movie but somehow with worse CGI. At best, one or two characters would have been fully done justice. Also, yeah, sorry. I'm realizing that I'm getting worked up in this comment lol. I've been thinking about Eternals a lot recently and almost wanted to do another video on it, not analyzing the particulars but just talking about the audacity of the whole thing. The self-destructive greed of the short-term profit margin is a hell of a drug.

I think I agree on the idea that even if Eternals was a TV show, the larger problems at Marvel likely would have contributed to it being a subpar show. Like you say, many of the problems in Eternal stem from more things than just how it had a lack of time to develop characters. I don't think that any amount of time and development would be able to explain some of the bad writing in the film (like Karun simply giving up when Kingo does). And even then, imagine how much character work they would need to do to make us actually believe the sociopath that is Ikaris is remotely charming or deserves to have the main characters basically worship him. It really is baffling how the movie is full of a bunch of interesting setups and ideas, but does very little with it or runs it into the ground. Also, I like your videos. I started watching after I found your Pokemon review and you basically said everything I was thinking about that game. I hope you keep making videos, and if you were to do a video on Eternals, I'd definitely watch it.

If you’ve only seen the dub then you nothing I’m saying applies. Everything I talk about here is 100% erased in the dub. I recommend the sub next time you rewatch for many reasons, but mostly just because it’s genuinely a more interesting and nuanced show

Thanks for the comment! I'll address your second point first: Maybe "evil" wasn't the right word (always wanted to change the wording on this bit at the editing stage, but by then it was too late), but the show is absolutely about the government being bad. They trick Sam into giving them the shield so that they can use the Captain America "brand" to support their propaganda. Also, John and Lemar talk about how the reason that they are war heroes is because they committed unspeakable acts for the government that continue to weigh on them. The central conflict of the show is about whether Captain America is supposed to be a mouthpiece for US empire or whether he's someone who stands up for what is right and earns the respect of the American populace by simply being a good person. Not to mention the Flag Smashers have that whole critique about how the governments of the world (including the US) threw them aside. But, I admit that critique is not well done... very muddied and unclear. You say that the whole show is about Sam learning to become Captain America, but I just don't see that. So much of the show is just plot events happening that are totally devoid of character development. Much of episode 2 is just vague fighting and talking about the plot (except admittedly the Isaiah Bradley part and the argument with Bucky at the end). The entire sequence in Madripoor has basically not a single moment of character development for either of the titular heroes (Episode 3). I can say almost the same thing for Latvia (except the great moment where Sam and Karli talk and he almost convinces her to stand down - exactly what Captain America is all about). It isn't until Episode 5 where we really start to feel like Sam is getting meaningful development and is growing. But at that point, it's so late! Yes, even in this comment I've pointed out some good moments where he is learning to become Captain America, but this is what I meant by my criticism. They are sprinkled here and there throughout the show, but aren't really developed into a clear arc. And sooooo much of the screen time is wasted on boring villains and talking/fighting without context. Contrast this with something like CA:TWS, where every second of screen time is so valuable. Just because they have six hours doesn't mean they should feel comfortable screwing around like this. Thanks again for the comment. Interested to hear your response.

@@leakylou2315 Sam's hesitant through the entire show he doesn't think he's good enough to carry on the mantle of Captain America when the government asked him to give them the shield back he feels relief like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders he doesn't have the responsibility anymore to fill in Steve's shoes to take his place the show is really about him accepting and learning to become Captain America he doesn't take the shield back until the second to last episode during one of the best MCU fights of all time but the shield is a symbol of his acceptance of the title of Captain America when he talks to Isaiah when he sees the new cap kill somebody in Cold blood all of these events are slowly adding up in his head even the conversation he has with War Machine all happened before the last episodes him trying to talk to the main villain instead of taking her out him taking the shield away from Captain America shows that he is not just a soldier that follows orders he sometimes works against the government against their best interest even doing some criminal things like helping Zemo escape this shows that he is not like Captain America who just follows orders he is more like Steve then he knows working against the government when he needs to and when it's the right thing to do unlike US Agent who just follows orders because he's a soldier

@@KenRogers-e9s I agree with everything you’ve said, which is why I admit in the video and in my last comment that Sam has some really great moments and they get the outlines of his arc right. Like literally if I was writing an outline of the characters journeys in this show, his would be perfect. The problem for me has always been in the execution. these great scenes that we’re referencing are few and far between and to get to them we have to wade through boring conversation after boring conversation and pointless fight after pointless fight. Episodes 1, 5, and 6 are great for Sam. 2,3, and 4 drag on so much that you could almost skip them entirely (except that one scene where he talks to Karli in 4) and miss nothing. Having your main character get very little development for 3 episodes and then speedrunning the climax of his story in the last two is exactly the kind of sloppy writing that has led to the downfall of the Disney+ shows. It’s fine for “pop” television, but it doesn’t stack up against the slew of amazing TV shows coming out that this show is competing with.

Sorry I missed this comment! I think we vastly differ on how we interpret the show. My John Walker section in the video is instructive on my views. In my view, the US government did not “happen to choose a bad guy.” The scene with him and Lamar talking about how they won their awards tells the whole story. Which guy gets chosen by the world’s biggest imperial power to be their icon? The one who follows orders unconditionally. The one who will do the dirty work when they need him to, but still smile for the cameras. Those at the highest levels of government could NEVER pick a “true” Captain America which is the whole point of the show. The entire point of Captain America’s character is that he represents the ideals that its people aspire toward not the government. Steve tore the stars and stripes off of his chest AFTER hydra was rooted out of the government, not because of Hydra (post-Civil War). I do still wish I hadn’t used the term “evil” bc that was an exaggeration (although I think it’s probably true lol, but not the most precise use of the term and not what I meant). But the government is one of the clear antagonists of this show. Aside from John Walker, he fights with them about how they’re treating the refugees, they lie to Sam about the shield, I mean he works for them and can’t even get a damn bank loan. Steve never worked for the government post-WWII in the MCU, except unofficially a few times with Nick Fury (And EVERY step of the way he fought Nick Fury) UNTIL Winter Soldier, which was ABOUT him realizing that things are different now and this world is more complicated than “work for US beat Nazis.” And he never works for them again. It’s a major plot point that he blames the government and Nick both for allowing Hydra to amass so much power and for establishing a mass murder/surveillance program that Hydra was able to take advantage of. And let’s not even get into Civil War lol. Sam working for them (and that being totally uncommented on!!!) misunderstands Sam’s character (he LEFT the military and just counseled veterans with PTSD - this was a major part of his character) and what he and Steve stood for. They weren’t FULLY anti-government (bc marvel movies are too mainstream for that) but they certainly weren’t just routinely doing jobs for them.

you’re right but i wouldn’t frame it that way because i think natasha had good stuff too. natasha has the great fortune of having her most important character moments in the movies that were some of most well written. her arc in winter soldier, and then that progression to endgame where she (a far cry from the cynical spy she used to be) is the only one grasping for straws barely holding the team together, in part BECAUSE of her great development in winter soldier, is still some of the best of the first three phases to me. that said, i agree that she’s already been totally surpassed by yelena.

And the fact that a lot of thing that are important to Clint, were shamelessly just either copied, or straight out stolen for kate, only makes me dislike her even more. (Like Lucky the pizza dog, Jaques Duquesne, and the "he made a different call"-moment.) Also, Clint Barton is my favorite character, so this is a bit biased, but I think they should've cut some of kate's screentime, because now it feels more like kate bishop show. Meanwhile yelena's just a horrible monster, who's also a hypocrite, and a moron. She whines about how she's killed a lot of people, and then intentionally causes an avalanche, because some guards tried to defend the prison, and prevent yelena's and Nat's highly illegal prison break. Said avalanche kills hundreds of people. And what does yelena do after the mass murder she just committed? Does she feel bad? Is she in shock? No. Instead, yelena jokes about having her sexual organs ripped out of her, in order to prevent having children. And that’s not the only time her actions doesn’t quite match her values. yelena wishes to free the black widows, but she only tries it once, and the other time she intentionally tries to destroy every vile they have. And if it wasn’t for the insane plot armor the two remaining viles had, yelena would’ve destroyed all of the red juice viles, and they couldn’t replicate the formula. She made a choice, that would’ve doomed the thousand black widows across the world. There's also the fact that she tries to kill Nat in budapest, despite Nat currently being the only person who can help her achieve her goals. She also thought Nat and the avengers would find out the red room's location, from the red juice yelena sent to Nat via mail. She then casually talks about the red room, the avengers, black widows, etc. in a public gas station. Never mind the fact that Nat is currently wanted world wide. She also says she kept watching the news, hoping to see Cap bringing down the red room. Again, she watched the news, but apparently missed the incredibly public news about both Cap and Nat. The news clearly state that they are ex-avengers on the run, and wanted world wide.

@@leakylou2315 The "hawkeye" show actually has similar problems to Multiverse of Madness. The titular character gets sidelined, and their only jobs are to be the hypeman for the replacement, as well as be a moron, so the replacement can outshine the old fool.

what the heck youtube is weird with notifications I never saw these comments. thanks for the thoughtful responses. adorkable: i’m usually with you i think the trope can be annoying but i also think the issue with that is usually that the writing itself tries to BE adorkable and almost like wink at the camera instead of having the humor come from the genuine truth of the situations that arise when a person is actually just kinda adorkable. so for some reason kate just works for me. clint being sidelined: i can’t argue with this. doctor strange is (was, actually) my fav character, so i was especially sensitive to how dumb they made him in both movies. i never felt like i was waiting too much for clint to get “his moment” so for me i don’t mind as much the shared spotlight, but i totally get it. that said, i think the difference to me is that clint does get a bunch of great moments in the show and i feel has great character development (except for his exchange with maya and generally the lack of care with his murder arc ruining it all lol). i still felt he was a competent and (very reluctantly, which is part of his charm) very father-like, which were the traits i liked about him most going in. strange on the other hand i think lost all of what makes him interesting and likable. still i see how he was sidelined, but again just saying why it wasn’t as bad for me personally as someone with less attachment to him. yelena being a murderer: huh. i need to rewatch the prison scene and see how that’s framed. maybe bc at the time she’s clearly still more in the antihero camp i didn’t find it that offensive but it is a good point bc shortly later in the movie she’s all the sudden basically just a hero (not antihero) so her callous killing of the guards does have some weird cognitive dissonance that i hadn’t considered. yelena trying to kill nat: ahhh no i love this scene. i think that it’s the super spy version of two sisters with a tense relationship getting into an argument after not seeing each other for a while, which is such a character rich take on a fight. it’s like: of course this is how these two would say hello. with knives. i guess i also thought that she wasn’t sure if nat was brainwashed but you’re right that this doesn’t make sense bc she said she was following the avengers. so idk i need to rewatch with this in mind. talking loudly in public is something that i can just chalk up to movie magic suspension of disbelief. if it had become a plot point that their talking was actually heard by someone i would be sooooo pissed and how inept they are. but since it wasn’t i give the movie grace to assume they were taking adequate care about how they talked in public but that we also need to be able to hear it and have it hit the emotional beats.
