    I was a machinist mate, got lucky and served in the engine room, and auxiliary’s was well. Air conditioning/refrigeration, hydraulics and diesels. Got all kinds of schools and training that absolutely affected the rest of my life. The military is not for everyone, but if you will apply yourself it can be very beneficial and be a wonderful experience, appreciated hearing your story chief .

    Just bad ass to be a Battleship Sailor. I grew up Navy for 5 years as a kid with my Uncle Pat and Aunt Ashley I was on loan by my parents to them to as shore duty for my Aunt with my younger cousins Bret and Bobby. I give big respect to the Navy big time even though I became an Army Paratrooper. Proud of Bret and Bobby both retired from the Navy too. Bret was a Snipe and Bobby a Quartermaster.

    These are great videos at giving a real prospective about joining. I considered joining in 83 but was talked out of it by several people including my current wife but looking back I wish I had joined. As he stated during his final comments it doesn't need to be 20 years just finish what you sign up for.

    Joe Battaglia do you remember MMCM Carl Baker? MM1 Burgage, MM1 Deskin and MMCS Holloway? Did you know MM1 Lowery? Lowery and I got stationed together again on the USS Yellowstone AD41. We were both Chiefs by then. Him and I went on liberty together telling New Jersey sea stories.

    The Jersey was off shore when the barracks were blown up, not in Egypt.

      The Jersey was off the coast of Lebanon on Oct 22 1983. I distinctly remember Captain Mulligan coming over 1 MC telling every what had happened. Encouraging everyone to write a letter home to notify there loved ones that we were safe. We pulled out Egypt was because Israel attack southern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley . They wanted us back on station to provide NGFS for the Marines. Incase of any retaliatory action.

    If a veteran comes aboard, will you get a heads up in advance? Or is it a spontaneous opportunity taken to interview the veteran if you find out he served on an Iowa?

    • @Masada1911
      @Masada1911 2 года назад +1

      They have to tell the museum staff in advance if they want an interview, otherwise they have no way of knowing

    21:16 For my grandpa's shellback, the royal baby rubbed himself down with sardine oil, and he placed a maraschino cherry in his bellybutton. he also grabbed your ears and rubbed your face all over his belly and you have to get the cherry out of his belly button. i actually have a picture of the royal baby and its completely insane lol. my grandpa told me that didn't crawl around all day though, it was only for a certain amount of time and they crawled through a line of people that had wooden paddles and they smacked your butt as you went through. i still have his shellback card and his certificate. he crossed twice and i have pictures from both crossings that he took.
    from talking to my friends my age that became shellbacks more recently, its vastly toned down and they don't paddle you anymore. i think they still make you do something humiliating, but i don't think they are allowed to make you eat a cherry or olive from a fat guy's bellybutton. there are plenty of female shellbacks now though, so you need to be careful about hazing when its male and female

    I have a question about the battle ship Texas; do you know about the status of her and when she’ll be repaired

      We highly recommend following them on Facebook, they give regular updates on her restoration. As of now, they haven't announced when or where she will be drydocked. Probably spring 2021.

    I feel like this dude was cut from a similar cloth as myself, tho I was never allowed to serve any branch due to Insulin dependance type 1. ( trust me I tried ) :(

    So were would be the materials to repair the hull while out in service like if it was hit with a torpedo and took out a severe part to the ship and needed to be repaired or took severe flooding

    Medical is a big reason for serving. You can always use the VA. If you stay in for retirement. The medical benefits Is just about good as any company. After most people were really screwed by affordable health care act. I lost my companies benefits. But my retirement benefits were way better the company I work for. Last but not least the GI Bill . Wish I had it. I enlisted during something call VEEP. Nowhere as good as the GI Bill.

    You ever considered doing a roundtables discussion with several of these veterans who were at Lebanon and let them jog each others memory?

    • @BattleshipNewJersey
      @BattleshipNewJersey  3 года назад +3

      When they come, they come alone most of the time. Most of these folks don't live around here so they just vacation in the area one day and show up.

      I grew up going to the local Barbershop with my grandfather. The barber was his company barber from the 193rd tank batallian and several others from the group would sit around and tell war stories. I wish I had recorded them as they have all passed on now

    The IOWA NEEDS RESCUED. Its messed up the way California is letting the Iowa just rust away. Parts missing her mask gone. Teck Decking missing. Move her to a state that will give a shit about preserving the Iowa from rusting away. She is the name sake for her class. SOMEONE DO SOMETHING

    • @BattleshipNewJersey
      @BattleshipNewJersey  3 года назад

      All of these ships face similar challenges for preservation. Its extremely expensive to maintain them. These ships are supported by the goodwill of individuals and Iowa needs donations and volunteers just like New Jersey does. I highly recommend volunteering if youre in the area or donating if you are able.

      It's clear the state of Iowa doesn't give a crap . And good will only goes so far. I live in Illinois so I'd be more likely visit the New Jersey or Wisconsin. And the Illinois wasn't completed. The Missouri is in Pearl Harbor so that's won't happen. If one was alot closer I would volunteer in a second.
