I wish there were some RUclips lecture channel of Venerable Shi You Wei - he seems so humble and nice to listen to. I would appreciate if there were less distraction from the other people in the podcast. As a born-Hindu who has since become an agnostic-atheist, I too have read about Buddhism and Buddha in general. I would listen to this monk for hours! Such humble vibe! Thanks for the episode!

I went for the exhumation of my late grandfather's grave, and we sent his ashes to a temple. The temple medium i was speaking to, told me that after 49 or 99 days something like that, the soul or spirit of my late grandfather would have reincarnated already. Then it got me thinking... For the past 20 years, who have we been praying to? Wth???

I think it is a folklore that has roots in the "Three sect" teachings, namely Confucius, Buddhism and Taoism.
Confucius has the concept of filial piety and observing three years of mourning upon the deceased of a parent.
Buddhism has a concept that the "intermediate state beings" taking 49 days for the karmic balance to be confirmed for next stages of rebirth.
Taoism has concept of the "Three Spirits and Seven Souls", and the 10 hall of Hades which kind of cannon with Buddhism.
      In Taoism folklore
The first 7 of the 7 days (49 days) is dissipation of the 7 souls, while the 100th day,
the first anniversary, and third anniversary is when the 3 spirits dissipates
The rebirth after 49 days is a Buddhist concept.
Illustration of the Chinese 冥界 folklore of 三魂七魄.
This might be informative on the rites and ritual in Chinese traditions.
The uploader have an extensive coverage of Chinese religious cosmology that some predates Taoism and Buddhism.
The entire coverage has 15 parts, the other videos are introductory videos on the deities.
      Part 1 三魂七魄

      Part 5 十殿閻王、六道輪回、孟婆湯、奈何橋的傳說
      ruclips.net/video/8yZmwUeLjUw/видео.html
The mentioning of the 49 days in Buddhism in Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra.
The animation is based on the 7th Chapter.《地藏菩萨本愿经》 - 利益存亡品第七
      ruclips.net/video/ARSsbjfmcZw/видео.html
Though for more extensive cosmology it is part the Buddhist Abhidharma that the Wheel of Life is covered.

That’s the Taoism version , they have the theory / believe of the three spiritual and seven physical souls ( 三魂七魄 ), one of it stays at the grave and one of it stays in the tablet?
Confucianism basically adopted the Taoism theory on this aspect .
While , In some schools of Buddhism, bardo (Tibetan) or antarābhava (Sanskrit) , 中有 ( Japanese as chū'u) is an intermediate, transitional, or liminal state between death and rebirth.

Not pray for Buddha Nature, this Buddha Potential is all the while in your life , usually in the dormant state, you vow ( pray / resolve ) to invoke Buddha Nature for the state of Buddhahood.

@@ct9245 Invoke one's Buddhicitta. It is not praying or worshipping. It is analogous to rubbing an iron bar against a magnet so that iron bar can also exhibit magnetism. Buddhicitta is an inborn inert nature but it is overshadowed by greed, hatred and ignorance

I think different country practice different Buddhism. Core belief is the same, but the way of teaching is slightly different. Like in Thailand they do worship Buddha as their "god." I'm half Thai-Japanese and I'm Thai Buddhist, not Japanese Shinto, and my husband and his family are Taoist. Who or what we're praying to are different, but the morals they teach are pretty much the same. That's how we are able to co-exist. Morals are important.

Question is, how do people know you have reached enlightenment so that you will be called a Buddha

    • @yecly
      @yecly 2 года назад +5

I think after you achieved nirvana, you are gone already, means free from all attachment.
Even gods in buddhism, are not enlighten. That's why they still in heaven. They have karma also. Can do bad things and still be reborn in lower realm.
Nirvana means, free from all karmic cycle. So, you will detach yourself from this material world all together.
Nobody knows what actually is a nirvanic realm looks like or how is it. Because all those beings don't have care about world and never to return already to tell.
Gautama is an exception. He did last awhile in human form, to teach, before pass away and return to Nirvanic realm.

It’s like sainthood, you don’t tell people you are a saint , or is people outside thinks that your behaviour qualified as sainthood behaviour.

In a nutshell. Buddhism there is no God. You just be a good person. Good person naturally means good karma. Good karma means good luck. Buddha cannot remove your bad karma. Deities are not enlightened.

But heavenly being “deities “ can be also disciples of the Buddha and practice bodhisattvas path and become heavenly protectors of Buddhism and the earthly Buddhist practitioners.

No god are clueless people think. In the universe, there are the existence of gods as many as sands in the rivers. Even the stars as this many in the universe. Human can't see Gods. Gods are common in the universe don't appear but have their adobes. There are beings of highly purity but not enlighten as Buddha. They achieve god status by accumulation of purity over many lifetimes.
