My brothers m1 mac also has the exaxt same damage. Insane that this is such a widespread problem. You would think apple would have found this error during testing.
AppleCare+ 99$ annually, +99$ service fee for each screen repair. In 5 years without any repairs 500$ spent for nothing. And with the screen being so fragile, because of the crazy thin lip/gap, Apple did the math, and they certainly will be profiting from this, either way. Cool.
Hi Scott, I faced the exact same issue with my Apple device. Initially, I took it to an Apple Authorized Reseller, and they sent a report to Apple. However, even though it was just a microscopic crack that they detected using a digital microscope, after a month of discussions, they declined to repair it under warranty. The cost estimate was approximately $900 for my M1 16-inch 2021 model. Interestingly, I decided to visit another Apple store, and they were able to fix it for free under warranty.
Lucky for you you found the right store or the right employee
Ive had the same problem. Apple charged me $750 to repair the crack. It cracked again after 7 days without any rough treatment. Apople is making it impossible to get this sorted out.
@@markbaxter8748 wow that’s horrible. Is Apple covering the 2nd one ?
@@ScottsReviews We shall see. Apparently I will probably need to use the magic words Australain consumer rights. They have been really horrible and not helpful. Clearly this is an issue that has affected so many people and Apple surely must know about this but they pretentdit is us that are at faulty.
@@ScottsReviews no they refused responsibility

I couldn’t agree more! Apple is becoming to scammy and shady!
I didn’t even do anything and the screen bugged out

Same out of nowhere flicker & crack situation happened to me. I used my M1 Macbook Air very infrequently as i have a Mac mini as my main work horse. I kept the M1 Macbook Air in my my backpack with an insulated computer slot compartment, primarily using it when traveling. I discovered the flickering (and ultimately cracked) one day when i pulled it out during a flight. I've never used any kind of keyboard cover, nor have i ever put anything between the keyboard and display. The body of the laptop is in pristine condition. Looks brand new. I brought it to apple, and I was talked down to like a child as if I caused the problem. They accused me of leaving a piece of paper in between the display and keyboard, and that's what caused it. If that were true - which it is not - then, why is this display being used??? Seriously - A piece of paper can cause $700 damage to a laptop less 2 years old?!? My still functioning 2012 macbook lasted til i replaced it with the 2020 M1 macbook air. The 2012 Macbook exterior looks like it's been through 2 tours of duty, and it's slow as hell - but the display has no flickering or cracks! Apple quoted me $700 to repair the Air. I've been a loyal Apple fan since my first PowerPC in 1997. I understand that sometimes there are accidents and the consumers are at fault. But with so many echoing the same thing, it's insane they are still trying to blame the consumer. Apple's continued gaslighting response to this is appaling.
This now obviously a screen issue and one that Apple needs to recall. I got mine fix via Apple with the hope that one day they do the right thing and take ownership. Paper really, they told me a piece of rice. Dumb reasons.
I went to the store today, after speaking with someone online, with the SAME ISSUE. I did nothing to it to cause damage. I was told BY THE APPLE STORE EMPLOYEE that a crumb could cause the damage. Not covered at all under their warranty nor Apple care. I’m disgusted. $577 to replace the screen on a brand new MacBook, purchased four months and three days ago…..c’mon Apple, ya gotta do better!
Seems very curious of how all the employees have the exact same answer across the country… a little suspicious, huh?
That's crazy, why wouldn't apple care cover it? I thought it did! Or is that only apple care plus?
@@richardsmithson4453 AppleCare plus would cover accidents, even though this is not an accident
@@ScottsReviews I was going to buy a MacBook m3 Pro 32gb ram but having second thoughts now. I’d get Apple care if I did though
@@ScottsReviews Upper management is training Applestore employees on this because it's such a widespread (and expensive) issue. It's hilarious how they recite the same script about crumbs too. I've heard it several times now at different apple stores. It's like I'm having a computer read to me.
This is so frustrating, it happened to my 1 month of use M1 mac book pro (2021) wich i bought brand new on february 2022 and take really good care of. I finished working i cleaned it, close it, and next morning it had horizontal and vertical lines on left bottom corner. At apple store they said exactly the same as they said to you, even so that the hard case from incase could be as heavy to pressure point breake the LCD, come on! ... To change the LCD they charge $850 and if i try an trade in they give me $200, this is crazy!. Since then i just use it as clam shell as there isn't any other option and paying its not one of them right now. I know this mac book pro M1 generation screen is faulty because it happens to a LOT of customers like us.
This should be a class action without a doubt
The old macbook pro (2015) I have has been:
- dropped multiple time (screen open, closed and on hard surfaces etc)
- had many items between it and screen at closing
- been slammed shut
- had heavy stuff on top of it (not on purpose)
- been closed from all different sides
- has had lot of pressure direct on screen
- multiple liquid spills
- thrown around room
- tossed in bag with various items..
BUT NOT A SINGLE ISSUE!
This new lineup of laptops sounds like a really bad product if they are that sensitive.
The whole point of the "one piece aluminum body" was the durability compared to all the plastic pcs.....
Not buying upgrade until these M1/2s have been resolved.
I had a 2017 and it was a beast. A class action is needed.
@@ScottsReviews I also have m1 pro 14 inch and it is also a beast but it never had that broken screen however the m2 air just had this issue and I'm searching for solutions
Same. My 2015 17" went through a lot without a hiccup. But, I've had 2 M series MBP screen failures now with just normal use. It's a bad screen design straight up and Apple doesn't want to do anything about it.
Scott you are too forgiving of Apple. They are producing an extremely fragile product, and not mentioning how fragile it actually is. With all the complaints, they are doing nothing to fix the issues, just blaming it on the users. It's just so wrong. When it it breaks they say tough luck sucker! I'm an everyday user, I take care of expensive items and yet my M1 screen broke 3 times in 1 year and my brand new $1,600.00 M2 cracked within the first month! I still have MacBooks from 2013 and 2017 that have never had any issues. Apple is not taking responsibility for this defect in design, they claimed crumbs on the keyboard caused the screen to crack. Crumbs! How's that? I keep the keyboard clean with a laptop brush I bought on Amazon. The worst part as you mentioned is Apple won't cover the repair and it will cost you almost as much as a new Mac, which is why I stupidly bought the M2 thinking they would have corrected the problems but they didn't... and they are well aware of the issues. I'm pissed, I like my Apple products but not so much that I'd let them rip me off again. They expect you to buy Apple Care to cover for Apples poor design issues? No, just no!
Speaking the truth. Yes, you are right about me giving Apple too much of a break, it's from years past of great customer service. For example, I purchased a used iMac from a private sale then it had issues. The iMac had a history of repair and Apple agreed that since they tried to fix it before for the same issue they covered it. I got a new internal system from a used product. So it's heartbreaking that they are failing in their quality.
@@ScottsReviews Totally agree! I too remember when they had great CS and great quality. Thank you for the video. It's important people know the truth before they spend that much money. Apple sure won't tell them!
when you mean 3 times in 1 year is that the same laptop with the replacement screens?? I thought the replacements are much tougher
correct. I can't believe how hard ass they are and literally walk away from you and take no responsibility. F#$K them
The same thing happened to me. I have only had mines for 7 months. I worked on mines late one night because I was preparing for a presentation I had to do the next day. The next morning my screen was messed up. I asked my 19 year old son did he try to use my laptop in the middle of the night. He no not at all. I was baffled on how it mysteriously was damaged while I was sleep. I was quoted $487 to repair and that didn’t include labor. I am highly frustrated because a MacBook is not a cheap investment! This should at least be covered under the warranty!
As you see the comments just from my video this is not happening just to a few customers, this should be a class action,
The "lip" of the Macbook Pro M1-M2 series laptops is madly thin. It is not even summer (when the presence of sand increases significantly), and somehow, a dust grain, salt or something else tiny and hard has left a tiny dent in the screen. Beware! Keyboard has to be wiped from any and all dust before closing, like crazy. This move from Apple to make the laptop's "lip" and gap between KB/Body of the laptop so slim, undermines the security of and possibly longevity of the screen and the entire laptop. Stupidly genious decision. Bravo Apple, it's certainly better than any other kind of planned obsolescence, but still...
do the m2 series also have this issue
@@harimandhanjal3430 There is nothing external that is different, only internal specs have changed between M1 and M2 versions.
thanks for the reply i was heartbroken and was trying to exchange my m1 for m2 cause of the screen breaking thing. any advice on how to avoid this mess@@xypleth
@@harimandhanjal3430 There is nothing we can do, other than avoiding any sand/hard dust, and other objects, and I'd try to avoid eating close to the laptop. I believe even something as soft as salt crystals can make dents too... Inspect, clean the keyboard before closing, and don't smash the screen closed, close gently, and never put anything on, or press in the middle of the laptop screen, when it is closed.
Luckily the dent I have, is very tiny, so it is difficult to spot, but it's still clearly visible, from almost any angle, and from quite far (about 1 meter), with clear bright background. I should be glad, that I got to know about this, before my screen was full of tiny dents. 😬😪
same thing happened to me 2 days ago with my M2 macbook air.......god this is crazy, probably the next big issue for apple like with their butterfly keyboard
This is crazy
My 2019 just broke from a very light touch from my finger, trying to clean a smudge. I'm going to attempt to replace the screen myself using an eBay replacement. You just have to make sure to get the right screen, since they changed screen models 3 times in less than 3 years. In the case of the 2019 change over, the same model number is shared between MacBooks that use two different screens.
I have the same problem and they told me the same thing for my Macbook Pro M1. I did not have any crumbs or rice between my computer keyboard and screen to cause any cracks in the screen or puncture the screen. Thy glass looks like it has an impact from the inside of the screen which is the liquid display of the screen. So I'm fighting it. Now, there are two spots on the same Macbook Pro screen and there is nothing that was between the clam keyboard and the clam screen for my Macbook Pro M1, yet there is a second impact visible on the screen. My Macbook Pro is only 1 year old and I do have the Apple Care package. Apple said it will be a $99.00 fee to repair it because it looks like I accidentally did something to cause the crack in the screen because of the way the screen looks on from the inside like there was some kind of impact externally causing the screen to malfunction, but I take good care of my Macbook Pro M1 and I have never dropped the MacBook Pro M1 or had anything in the keyboard that could possibly puncture the screen and damage it. We all need to contact Tim Cook, Apple CEO to get Apple to repair these obvious defects in the screen. For whatever reason, the screens for the M1 macs are mysteriously having the same type of screen malfunction and it's a pattern that can be verified by people with nothing in common except for this common problem with the screen not working properly and Apple support and in-store technicians are placing the blame on M1 owners seeking repair. Apple customer service said there is no one managing the product support issue above Apple Customer support recommended I email Tim Cook about the problem and gave me this email address to contact Tim Cook tcook@apple.com. For me, it's the principle of the matter. If this happens to me again after I get the screen repaired, I'm not going to be as understanding about the known screen defect not being recalled to fix it by Apple.
I agree this needs to be a class-action suit that may come soon. I hope... If they gave you that email for Tim it is probably a fake or monitored by upper management email. You never know...
Also is you see all Apple Store employees have the same scripted response. That shows me they know its an issue
can you please help me im also facing same issue
Got the same problem here a few months after buying this M1, in the exact same place.
My M1 MBA also has a cracked screen. Mine is at the top center of the screen near the camera as if too much pressure was used when opening or something.
I got this same damn issue today on my Macbook Air M1. Pathetic. Apple should refund all of us or offer a complimentary replacement. Anyone interested in a class action suit?
We all are ha. !!!
yes to a class action
we should do a class action against this
Yes, I'm in Wisconsin. California did one for whole country with deadline March of 2023. I wish I had known. $600 refund I heard. I think we need to do another.
Yes
I am using M1 MacBook, I found screen cracking recently . Went to service centre and showed issue. Simply they said system is out of warranty so screen replacement and paid service applicable. I paid 35.5 k ₹ + 2999/- … almost 40k spent on screen issue.
hi bro, i am also from India, facing the exact same issue
Same. Paid $700 to repair display screen on Macbook Pro M1 2021 showing horizontal and vertical lines. Said I must have dropped it. 3 months later after very careful use of never moving off my desk and closing carefully, a cracked screen. Took it to an Apple dealer and they wouldn't stand by their 90 day warranty because they said I did something to crack the screen! What is a consumer to do? California settled on a 2021 lawsuit for this very issue but we had to sign up before March of 2023.
This is really pathetic spending all the money in research and development to produce your own chips which super powerful and efficient at the same time and giving it a super delicate screen on it.
It's like AMG building a super powerful engine and mercedes putting it on a car running on bicycle tyres
Yes the same thing happened to me yesterday all of a sudden!! I actually saw that happen in real tome. No impact or anything!
my 2019 16 base model did this 4 weeks ago. Taken care like my own baby. Now the screen's dead. Still have fully functioning 2010 mbpro. They sure do don't make things like they used to
Hi Scott, so how is your replacement screen doing? I had my screen replaced by apple yesterday and thinking it could happen again..
mine cracked 7 days later despite having acase to protect it.
@@markbaxter8748is this a recent replacement?
So far so good with my second screen. 🫰🏻
My replacement broke right after the 60 day mark...
This just happened to me right before my band was supposed to play a show! I had some sun on it, wasn't that hot, but I assume the slight heat triggered the "cracking". Really bizarre problem. It still works fine with a monitor, but I'm just going to sell it for parts, doesn't seem worth it to repair it with another screen that can just go bad for no reason.
That's actually my theory is that this is a thermal related thing. The clearance is too tight on the bezel and/or it's coupled too tightly to the aluminum frame. It's just a time bomb waiting for the right number of thermal cycles of normal use to cause a little crack and POP your screen is fucked.
I tripped on the USB hub cable and this exact thing happened right after I'm back from by bathroom!
I had the same problem with the screen crack and got it repaired too. Apple should redesign the macbook.
i have this aswell on my m2 macbook air and its kinda sad because it got damaged without me knowing what happened and i take good care of it since my mom bought this for me. and this happened 1 time earlier and now its here again i need it for school now i can only use it on my monitor
Im watching this vid with a cracked screen M1 macbook Air right now...
same here
Apple will either make a a super durable product that slows down with planned obsolescence or a super powerful processing machine that cracks if you sneeze on it, there’s no in between
I'm literally terrorized by this info. I just bought a M2 yesterday and I just noticed that (1) several people has this same problem, (2) that nobody has a clue about what causes it, and worst of all, (3) that Apple simply does not help customers to fix it. I haven't unboxed it, and now I really want to get it back. I will never buy an Apple product again.
Please update?
Did you return the MacBook or you are using it?
@@MuhammadHamza-wt5sq Thank you for asking! I returned it. Fortunately, the store in my country gave me back my money without asking too many questions (also, I didn't unboxed it). My old and reliable Mac (2012) still works fine. I'm using Catalina, and I can run any program I need.
@@Atlas2Atlante0 many thanks for feedback !!
TBH this is my biggest fear buying a MacBook, imagine you're spending your months savings to buy a laptop and after sometimes the screen cracks 😔
seems like the screen saver on sonoma is causing this issue, even a repair guy on apple forums confirmed that the screen was heating up in the bottom left corner (where the screen cracks) for sure causing this issue.
I never knew this was an issue. I just got my screen replaced for $473 tax included. But what’s worse is I kinda blamed it on my 4 year old thinking he stepped on it!
😢
Did the problem reoccur after screen replacement?

Mine did the same thing randomly, while it was open and I was working.
Crazy, another one...
Same issue here. Never mistreated my Macbook. I'll try to have it fixed under warranty. Then, if not possible, I'll replace the screen myself with my iFixit kit and some patient care. I know the repair will be too expensive if I have to pay for it as it was a base model I got on a Black Friday deal here in Europe. I should have switched to PC as it was my intention but the M1 stuff was so impressive I went with a Mac once again. M1 is great but there's no possibility to install Linux with working drivers for everything if the mac gets too old etc. (I know Asai Linux but it seems not ready)
how are you planning to to get a new display? From a refurbished mac? BTW same happned with me. Apple quoted 40k INR or ~500$ for display swap.
Let us know how your case turned out please. There probably needs to be a class-action lawsuit & public boycott campaign launched in EU over Apple's shameless systematic gaslighting refusal to take responsibility for their design flaw/manufacturing defect in M1 MBA, if that has not been done already.
Exact same thing happened to me! No accidents, no pressure or anything. Just opened the Mac in morning to see the lines. Mine is Mac Air M3 only 6 months old. Went to Apple Store, charging me $600 for repair!

This just happened to me. Apple MBA M1 2020. No adverse usage, just screen cracking up after carefully moving the laptop across a table.
i thought its because of
my privacy protector. 13 mos of use
So many people with the same issue myself included. I have a macbook pro M1 2021 model, the screen had the verticle lines so i had it replaced which cost 450 after covid. A year later it went again on the replacement. Instead of paying again for a new screen replacement i purchased a new monitor for 500 and have it sitting by the side and works fine. Its so anoying that apple replacements are pretty much half the cost of a new one and puts me off buying another apple laptop ever again. I would rather buy a mac mini and just get a cheap pc laptop for other stuff and have the desk top for my photography work. I noticed the gap at the back of the newer models has changed and the issue with my screen going wrong the second time was a particle on the ribben conecting the screen and you cant just replace that. Absolute joke for this kind of money we spend and the fact that companys you buy it from dont do cover for screens anymore.
The cracks happen on the same place (bottom left corner) on my macbook pro 14inch 2023. Have it inspected on genius bar and they charged AUD 1200+. Apple has been sucessful for a decade and now it is time for them to fall apart.

Same. I bought an M1 MacBook Air from the previous owner. They said they had it for 4 weeks and then opened it up and it was broken. Screen is super fragile.
I think having a plastic case on it might actually be the problem.
Why would a protective plastic case be the problem?
We don't know trying to determine the cause, ya it makes no sense but maybe it's the pressure from being snapped on.

When the LCD cracked I didn’t notice it until I was out of my bed, I turned my head and saw it, it felt like my damn soul left my body. This is a 2020 M1 MacBook Air, I got this because my old MacBook (2019 MacBook air) had LCD issues also, with that one I did absolutely nothing to it, I woke up one morning, got on it, and it had lines all over the screen. Fragile ass expensive computers, never will make the mistake buying a MacBook again.
So basically today I saw there was a very very small dot on my MacBook Pro m1 screen like it was red but not really visible however I was not okay with it so started scratching it with my nail and the dot grew bigger and caused a single purple line on the Mac screen. I got scared and further scratched the top and suddenly the Mac became black it would show for sometime and become black and it permanently because black I’m very scared now and because of my nail scratching I might have ruined the Mac I need help pls tell me what could be wrong and I hope the fix is not too expensive
Hello, that does not sound good, but it also maybe different than cracks in the screen.... regardless your screen may need replacement. Contact Apple and see what they can do... sorry
@@ScottsReviews thanks for the response. I never expected a replacement 😭😭😭
i can barely turn mine on! i heard a simple crumb could literally break the whole computer? how? i closed it slightly a bit hard but not too hard that it would break but when i opened it back up the screen randomly cracked! unacceptable and never dropped it?!
this happens to my m2 macbook. never buy apple again
I don't think I'll ever buy a post-2015 MacBook or Apple machine of any kind. The new ones are wicked fast, yes. But they are frail. And they are designed to be frail. Massively unhappy w/ Apple's approach to upgradeability or user repair. Not for me.
Same damage I really don’t know how it ended up like
apple laptops are very tiny, lol. glad you got it repaired. im surprised single rice grain can get it cracked.
The key is to cook the rice for 18 minutes before tossing a tablespoonful of it onto the open M1 MBA and slamming the lid shut with furious wrath -- then the whole gelatinous mess smooshes out nicely into the keys and there is never a problem ";0))
i know atleast 15 people with the exact same side being broken including mines how? when i use a wireless mouse keyboard and monitor i never touch the damn thing.. this weird
Yes, at this point, I’m not sure why it’s not a class action
well i had my laptop for about 7 years now got it in 2018 and now in 2024 approximately a month ago this started and now its literally not working.......but whats interesting is that my boy brought a new 2020 last year or 2 years ago and his screen also just broke
Strange how they keep making things thinner and they keep breaking. I am curious about the newest iPad being so thin how long is that gonna last?
@@ScottsReviews not long at all
Just found out that my screened is cracked lol. I think my cause is my outta box case, maybe its doing more harm than good.
There may be something too that, I had a cover on the lid and it cracked. So far my second screen has not cracked and I removed the cover. Anyone else out there have a case or cover on their laptop and it cracked?
How much did you pay for the repair?
Trying to remember..... around 5 or 6 hundred
same problem here!! Weird part is that this happened the next day after i was seeing options to buy an M2 macbook air and trade this in.. now my trade in value is suddenly down to 100$!
I don’t think they are that good. Ha. This is an issue that has to be addressed. Very disappointed in Apple

Same happened with me today now indont know what to do
Sorry it sucks. 😩
same issue black screen and flicking come on my macbook air after use of one year.
and another one....
Bro what u done for that problem
Even I am also having same problem. Can u please suggest me what to do..
Yeah my m2 MacBook Air also cracked, not the screen but the lcd behind it. Wtf? I closed it while I was at my desk, took it downstairs, opened it, and it was cracked
Apple got to do better after all the money spent on a product that's so easily broken. They know what they are doing. Consumers just have to stop purchasing Apple products at that high end price. Why purchase something that breaks so easily. Apple is not a superior product. Your software is very good. Not the hardware.
this is the issue i am sticking to windows
i've sadly migrated to windows as i cant trust mac laptops anymore
Thank you all for comments. My cracked screen is ok if I adjust working away from damaged area. My old apple screen (not as nice) works great after years and years and dropping etc... Apple might be in decline in their customer service orientation.
Same thing happend to me, my Mac book air m2 was just 3 days old 😢😢
@@Hahensks7 WTH. That’s ridiculous. Did you happen to get the extra AppleCare plus
Just happen to me ! Apple should have had a robot open this laptop a 100,000 thousand times from every corner. They should have mad the glass thicker or put metal where you close it .I am a die hard Apple customer but why do we always have to have class action suits 5 years later. Not that I would start one don’t have the time. They benefit the biggest company in the world.Make it right the first time. Apple please make it right at least for the future MacBook Air!!
I agree
My screen isn’t cracked but it’s broken can you post a solution for it?
@@MMMAAAYYYYYYY unfortunately the only solution is to go to Apple and give them all your money to get a new screen. I’m trying to be funny but I know it’s not.
@@ScottsReviews well I will rather just use my iPad and phone lol
identical problem Macbook pro M2...
1.5 years. internal crack of display, did not drop, no physical impact to the mac! Connected Apple support NOTHING!
can someone explain a black cube of 5 cm x 5 cm on the top left for 2 days and suddenly saw an internal crack going all the way to the other side as the top showing the screen and the bottom as 2 rd of the screen black ,then nothing at all, just a black screen with purple which lignes.....
Happened with my M2 Air macbook, same issue in the middle of the screen, did you find a solution?
Did you have a cover on the top? I am glad I did not buy the M2 thinking it was stronger....
I literally used my 2020 Macbook pro for homework, opened it later that day and there was a black vertical line on the right side of the screen….never dropped it or anything:/ Anyone have suggestions for non-apple laptops that still run very well?
Happened to me! So pissed.
Is there same issue with macbook air m2
I asked and they said, "its the same thin screen"
