After watching endless Time Team episodes, I want to congratulate Phil for being the most imaginative, hands-on, hard working, truly investigative, determined and passionate archeologist on the team. I relate to roles each member plays, but Phil not only puts himself into learning skills of the historic people researched, he mentors others afterward. Thanks Phil for all you could tribute.
Idk, Stewart's ability to (usually very accurately) judge where things used to be by looking at the shape of the land, is pretty damn imaginative and investigative. Not that it detracts from Phil's achievements or anything, but Stewart is definitely way up there with Phil!

I have often thought the same. I too am mad on church buildings, architecture and history, but am a non-believer too. I'm also a vegetarian like Mick was, would have loved to have met him x
I continually find it telling that so many non-believers seem to know more about things religious than the religious do. Probably due to having an enquiring nature and being naturally sceptic.

He didn't approve at all but I suspect that the _tits'n'teeth_ comment was before he got to know her. She is actually a highly respected historian.

The gentleman explaining to Phil about parchment had me flummoxed lol. I can generally understand British accents when most Americans cant.. but he had me straining to understand him. Then when I saw Phil having trouble I didn't feel so bad lol. Edit: Best show ever.. if i could only watch one series from here on itd be this one. I pretty well do that anyway..
I wish I had seen this episode before I went to Ireland and Northern Ireland in 2018 for a bus tour. I would have paid attention to the site. We visited the Downpatrick site and Belfast University were digging at the 'tennis court' trench. I did snap a few pictures of the church.

There was a short live 'proto Time Team' series, just four episodes, which were presented by Mick but that didn't work obviously because he wouldn't be asking our (the general public)'s questions because he would know the answers already.

Incredible how you can misread a map and tear up the road to find a drain - it was obvious from the map that they were mistaken for the localisation of the tower whereas most of the paintings were probably correct as they seem to add up with the map.

+Fangs4DaMemories as the romans retreated, the peoples left behind had to revert back to preroman subsistance practices so that the pottery finds in some parts of the world are minimal. it's not that there is no pottery,it's just not allot of it...
Pottery stopped being produced in Ireland after the bronze age. People moved onto using wood instead for making plates and bowls. Unfortunately, wood does not preserve well. In Britain, pottery was used by the Romans and so continued to be used there but in Ireland you don't see pottery again until the Norman period (1167 onwards).
The size of these trenches surprised me at first. We in belgium work via a semi-french trench system and usually clear off the topsoil with digger and then put trenches in on discolourations. So I'm used to trenches that are 20m by 60m on fields.
The reason the trenches are so small is that this is only exploratory archeology: recording and confirming archeological sites for actual excavation later or préservation. They aren't actually digging anything up.
I do brain tanning of deerskin and have tanned sheepskin on one side. I'd always thought parchment was sheepskin--that's an alternate name for a diploma too. I know calf skin was high grade glove and shoe leather. SCAdians--Society for Creative Anachronism--research just about everything one could want from times medieval. These guys could have hunted down some local SCAdians and been shown how to make that parchment and definitely the Illumiunation & Calligraphy--including the grinding of pigments for colors.
Numerous paintings with a bell tower in a different area…..ok now we’re looking for ditches with garbage in them. Ok quick, look parchment, and a wall! It was a big success!!😁😂
Um… outdoors in all weather, not a mirror in sight, hands full with trowels and brushes instead of a comb… yep, I would say there is! LOL. That said, most of the women have their hair either very short, or pulled back and tied.
One of my pet peeves is the use of "pour over a document" would make it very wet, for "pore over a document" which reflects the use of animal skins to write on. When you pore over a document, you are examining it so closely you can see the pores in the skin.

THe use of skins, the original vellum, is where the phrase comes from. Tony was just the presenter; the host, if you will. He brought a name familiar to many viewers at that time, much like Mike Rowe has done with "Deadliest Catch". And much like Mike, Sir Robinson brought a layman's view; asking "greenhorn" questions and bringing the answers and explanations down to a level that the general public could understand.
He was an actor, but I believe be is or became somewhat of a historian himself, at least an amateur one. Also, I think he was a major player in getting the show started at all.

I just noticed there’s a lot less gesturing of hands in the earlier series. Natural gestures but none of the chopping and waving in the later series. Who thought archaeologists flapping their hands like politicians and infomercial “actors” was a good idea? 🤷🏼♀️

An archeological team looking for evidence of early Christians at Downpatrick cathedral...which purports to have the grave of St Patrick...why not dig Patrick up, to see if he's there? Supposedly, St Brigit and St Columba are buried there, too.
The older fellow gives a rather gentile version of the relationship between the priests, monks and the people. The Bible was kept in latin for a reason- only the clergy was allowed to read and interpret the book and dictate which portions would form sermons. A couple of English blokes were executed for translating the Bible into English and using a newfangled invention - the printing press - to make it available to lay people. Couldn't have the rabble clueing into some of Jesus' more liberal teachings now could you.

Ok. All that sounds very intellectual. However you take a lot of liberty with historical facts. For example- people didn't read because there was no printing press. This meant the only way to keep records required extensive hours dedicated to hand writing onto parchments and skins. Learning to do this would have required tremendous amount of money to do. Anything written would be of unspeakable value. It's not something you could pass around for anyone to read. Those who were translating the ancient scrolls collected to assemble the Bible would have to be amazing individuals with incredible education in ancient languages. Prior to the Bible being assembled Christianity was based on very limited texts. The average citizen would never had time to learn to read let alone to read. This is why they needed teachers to spread the This is barely even touching on the world before the printing press. Christ people did the same thing the Jews did and had to use others to write down instructions that would have been sent to leaders who then would have to spread those words by word of mouth. Since knowledge is power, and power corrupts, of course your going to have men who didn't wanna give up that power after hundreds of years of control. However, in my opinion it's far wiser to take into consideration the history before slapping modern philosophy onto historical events. No, I'm not catholic so I have no ax to grind. The way society slowly developed and how quickly it became sophisticated once people learned to try to live by Christian law is fascinating to me.
You’re about 1000 years off, give or take. None of that has anything to do with Downpatrick. At the time when Patrick and his monastic community were there, there was no such thing as an “English language” to translate anything into. English, even Old English, didn’t exist yet; the various arrivals of Angles, Jutes, and Saxons occurred in the mid-400s.
Why is Carenza part of the Team? While everyone else is busy I rarely see her do anything except watching people work and jumping in front of the camera when it turns on? She doesn't bring much knowledge either.

Carenza exhibiting why they moved her from the field to more of a historian role in later seasons. She may be smart, but she always has to impress everyone with what she 'thinks' she knows....and, continually, talks over everyone....including Professor Aston.. Sad really, I think she was being mentored by Mick. And, in later years after distancing himself, appears to be tired of her showmanship, too. It is a tragedy of the health issues she encountered. This was a very sad situation.

A common practice in the UK and Eire, usually in a pub.
Engineers too. Seems to help the wild ideas flow.

@@ELCADAROSA Actually he's been a good amateur archæologist for years and definitely before *TT.* He was a friend of *Mick Aston* before *TT* and was first choice of *Aston* to front the programme. Incidentally it's *Sir Tony* rather than *_Sir Robinson._*
I just noticed there’s a lot less gesturing of hands in the earlier series. Natural gestures but none of the chopping and waving in the later series. Who thought archaeologists flapping their hands like politicians and infomercial “actors” was a good idea? 🤷🏼♀️

The older fellow gives a rather gentile version of the relationship between the priests, monks and the people. The Bible was kept in latin for a reason- only the clergy was allowed to read and interpret the book and dictate which portions would form sermons. A couple of English blokes were executed for translating the Bible into English and using a newfangled invention - the printing press - to make it available to lay people. Couldn't have the rabble clueing into some of Jesus' more liberal teachings now could you.

Ok. All that sounds very intellectual. However you take a lot of liberty with historical facts. For example- people didn't read because there was no printing press. This meant the only way to keep records required extensive hours dedicated to hand writing onto parchments and skins. Learning to do this would have required tremendous amount of money to do. Anything written would be of unspeakable value. It's not something you could pass around for anyone to read. Those who were translating the ancient scrolls collected to assemble the Bible would have to be amazing individuals with incredible education in ancient languages. Prior to the Bible being assembled Christianity was based on very limited texts. The average citizen would never had time to learn to read let alone to read. This is why they needed teachers to spread the This is barely even touching on the world before the printing press. Christ people did the same thing the Jews did and had to use others to write down instructions that would have been sent to leaders who then would have to spread those words by word of mouth. Since knowledge is power, and power corrupts, of course your going to have men who didn't wanna give up that power after hundreds of years of control. However, in my opinion it's far wiser to take into consideration the history before slapping modern philosophy onto historical events. No, I'm not catholic so I have no ax to grind. The way society slowly developed and how quickly it became sophisticated once people learned to try to live by Christian law is fascinating to me.

Carenza exhibiting why they moved her from the field to more of a historian role in later seasons. She may be smart, but she always has to impress everyone with what she 'thinks' she knows....and, continually, talks over everyone....including Professor Aston.. Sad really, I think she was being mentored by Mick. And, in later years after distancing himself, appears to be tired of her showmanship, too. It is a tragedy of the health issues she encountered. This was a very sad situation.
