    IMO the Sirui flares and bokeh aren’t pronounced enough versus just buying a decent anamorfake spherical set and calling it a day, and while the Vazen 28mm is a fantastic little gem, the other two are ham-fisted lumps that sour the set and may as well be replaced with one full Rapido package and a good adapter scope. If I had to pick one improvement to implement on each lineup, it would be these: Sirui should integrate oval aperture mechanisms to augment their weak squeeze factor aesthetic, and Vazen should ditch the front diopter lenses in favor of filling out the set with primes that use the focusing design of the 28mm.

      This is a very solid piece of thought for both makers. I've made those points to them a couple times already. hahaha.

    I gotta say, this video really drives home the fact that Sirui have really shook up the market with their game changing lenses.
    The fact that they are even comparable to single focus anamorphic lenses that are exponentially more expensive is really awesome.
    A very attractive option for pretty much EVERYONE who isn't rich lol
    I'm very happy with my 50mm, 35mm, and 24mm set, and will definitely be backing the rumored 85mm version.
    Great comparison video! The two cheapest (relative in the Vazen examples lol) single focus anamorphic lens sets being compared really helps us unwashed masses choose lolz

      Hey Afotey, I have the 50 since the first campaign and I pretty like it, but only 1 client (in this crap year) wanted an anamorphic video, because of this I'm not sure I shall get the full set or just get the 24 for wider shots.

    • @AfoteyAnnum
      @AfoteyAnnum 3 года назад +1

      @@dallatorretdu honestly if you're on the fence and you already have the 50mm, I'd go ahead and get the 24mm. The 35mm is great, but if you already have the 50mm then the 24mm might be a bit more versatile when coupled with the 50mm.
      I have all three and will absolutely get the rumored 85mm version. IMHO that's the only thing missing from this set; a nice long focal length for some good DOF separation on my GH5...

    When you can get 5 Sirui lenses for the price of 1 Vazen lens, the choice is clear. Go with Sirui. It's not that the Sirui lenses are horrible, they just desqueeze differently at different focus range. It's a bit of a pain when you're editing but nothing you can't fix. If the Vazens were sharper or had wider aperture than maybe It could justify being 5 times more expensive than the Sirui but unfortunately it isn't.

    Love this Vid, thanks dude! You Rock...you do understand (unlike 1.8x squeeze) with a 1.33x squeeze factor you shouldn't shoot in 4:3 mode, (which is what it seems the info in the video states) but in the normal 16x9 settings on your micro four thirds camera system, right? which probably explains why the circles aren't perfect and shapes slightly change as you move closer to, or farther away from the focal point in your composition.
    When I first got my Sirui 50mm I couldn't wait to put my GH5 in anamorphic mode and test the lens, but all the footage looked crazy according to proper de-squeeze ratios, did a little research and Sirui confirmed that 1.33x squeeze factor is designed to be acquired in normal 16x9 ration and then de-squeezed 1.33 times. My Atomos Ninja V confirmed it as I set, the camera to record in 16x9 and set the de-squeeze factor on the monitor to 1.33x and the picture looked perfect.
    At first I felt disappointed since I couldn't take advantage of the GH5's higher resolution in 4:3 anamorphic mode (being the first time I actually had an opportunity to shoot with an anamorphic lens I assumed, anamorphic mode was a given with any anamorphic lens)...but after working with these lenses in the intended way, I simply love them! I had to get the 35mm and 24mm lenses also...rumors is an 85mm may be in the works to complete the set...if so, I'll be dishing out the bucks for it too, if it comes in under $1200...keep up the good work, much love from Dallas, Texas-USA

    Great video! Just used the Vazen 40mm with a Blackmagic Pocket 4k for a music video recently - along with an iPhone 11 pro max with a 1.33x adapter on it. Really fun shoot. Definitely been curious about the Sirui's, but at this point I just see so much more "anamorphic quality" from the 1.8 crop factor over the 1.33x, regardless of the brand. That's the biggest selling point for me. Hoping to get my hands on the Vazen 28mm in the not-too-distant future. Between the 28 and 40 it really does feel like you can cover darn near everything you'd want to cover in a professional shoot.

    Excellent video! I think Sirui has successfully disrupted the professional lens market in general much like Meike. They have shown that there is definitely a place and a future for small sensor cameras. In terms of bang for buck, Sirui takes it home. I was able to afford all three sets without a small loan and honestly most of the 'issues' they might have can be addressed in post. I also watched your video response to Potato Jet's criticism and I definitely agree with you. When it comes to lens you have to look at things in context, I don;t think he say it that way. The image quality between any of these and a Cooke anamorphic which I have used is so small that it would be odd not to try these out before shelling out money rent ot purchase for the ARRIs and Cookes. I think Vazen is an amazing piece of optical engineering but for them to be competitive at least in context of Sirui they need to be priced below $2000 and probably less as a set. The extra squeeze factor, the orange flares are all awesome and desirable but they are not 'better' than Sirui's look. I also wonder why there is a bit of inconsistency between cameras. Otherwise I am happy to own the Sirui set. I would however buy one of the Vazen's if I ever found a ridiculous deal.

    I really wish we could have the more distorted look of the Vazen's, but with the near perfect focus of the Sirui's. Especially on the wider lenses, I love that look of the image exponentially curving at the edges. Price is the main factor for me, but the poor wide-open performance of the Vazen's is another reason to go with Sirui.

    Thank you for your enthusiasm and these very interesting tests, a long time ago, I was making scope (x2) in 16mm (1.33) film for low budget short films, and the 16mm anamorphic "inflated" editing in 35mm copy, it could be shown in the cinema in scope. I needed a "primary" C-mount lens and a front projection Scope lens, I didn't want to redo this installation with hybrid cameras, and here are the "Sirui"!
    Before seeing your video, I thought that the 1.33 compression was insufficient to give the "scope" effect in blurry areas, and I was delighted to see the possibility of having the sensor arrive on the GH4, Gh5 square to make the Scope with "x2" compression, but the Scope lenses were still very expensive ...
    But ... I'm still in Gh4 there is now the full frame Lumix S5 for the same price as the Gh5 which would seem to be even better for the Scope (in general), but ... it seems to me that the Scope Sirui lenses do not work with the Lumix S5, so I ask this question: would the Sirui scope work with the Lumix S5, would the final quality be better than with a Lumix Gh5? Thank you !

    Excellent comparison, Tito. Thanks for doing this. One question for you that wasn't addressed in the video - how do these lens sets compare in terms of distortion? It seems the Vazen has stronger anamorphic traits in general (aside from the flaring which seems to be pretty similar), but the Vazens seem to have more of a swirl effect and classic edge distortion.

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  3 года назад +2

      Very good point. I didn't address it in the voice overs, but it's pretty easy to spot it on the footage itself. I also have a much bigger shootout/comparison coming out later that includes distortion charts for 25+ anamorphic lenses under $10k. So stay tuned!

    I've been using the Sirui quite a lot since I bought the 35mm and the 50mm. They are very nice lenses for the price but there's a big default on both lenses and it's the inconsistence of the 1.33 squeeze ratio. Depending which distance the subject is from the camera, it's not always a 1.33. At close range subjects are wider than «normal» and at long range they shrink. So that's a "think about it" before shooting a project with it.

    I think the optical performance on the vazen is very poor. I’d much rather just get something like a cinematics rehousing of the Sirui as they are far more acceptable.
    Tbh I think the vazen visuals are extremely obvious, every time I see footage with them used I just think they are waaaaaaay to soft and fuzzy, and not in a “filmic” way.
    I would grab the Sirui but they will be coming out with a FF set and I’d rather not poor money into rehousing the current lineup if I’m just going to turn around and purchase the FF... for now I will stick with renting anamorphic cine lenses on jobs that require them and using my la7200 on smaller projects.

    The 1.33 stretch with the Sirui isnt enough... I want my anamorphic to look like anamorphic. Since the squeeze factor changes while focusing, its a deal breaker. However, it’s unique for some people. However, if vazen can make a s35 version with EF/PL for less than $5000 (which the 40mm and 65 are good candidates) then I would find a way to come up with the money for the full set. The market is looking for these lenses. At the 40 and 65 with an EF/PL would sell extremely fast.

    To be honest, I don't know what it is, but I liked the results of the sirui the best, even if the price was the same, I just liked the sirui more, especially the 35mm.
    I'm just wondering if ×1.33 sirui anamorphic lens experience when using a panasonic full frame camera is the same as with gh5/6...?
    On x1.5 crop sensor sirui 35mn looks really nice.

    For my 3.2k is to much to spend my money on. If money wasnt a issue.... ill take vazen for there rake focus ability. But for now sirui as a introduction to anamorphic is the best option to play with. My other dislike is the minimal focus distance of the sirui lens.... I like close up shots. Hope sirui make bether focus distance. For now lights then anamorphic sirui lenses. 24 35 50mm is great... Imagine classical Cinemascope Westerns and true narrative films being fixated by those artifacts! They would have been considered as the aberrations which they are, and would have been painstakingly eliminated!

      RED is not mirrorless camera. there is a rather complicated sensor cradel that allows physical adjustment of the position of he sensor and there is an user swappable Optical low pass filter in front of the sensor. All this resulted in the deep position of the sensor within the DSMC2 body. In the other words DSMC2 Red is impossible to be adapted to RF E Z or any other mirrirles mount

    1.33 is still born! yes it is interesting amateur option but there is no justification shooting narrative on 1.33. Vazen is on a right track but 28mm is a step in wrong direction. it is interesting lens for drone or gimbal but i dont see how useful this lens would be in the narrative taking in consideration that it mumps same as Sirui. Vazen is still rough at edges and it needs a more RnD, but V2 version of this lenses is going to be more interesting. as long as there is 4:3 small sensor cameras this system will be viable. we are waiting for 2x 35mm or even 42mm Chinese lens for 3500$ and who ever makes it they will take market by storm. So far no one is challenging Atlas

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget

      The Vazen 28 is not the same mechanics as Sirui and it doesn't mump. If anything, I find it the most technically advanced in the set, along with the full frame 85mm.

      Vazen 28mm does not have any mumps. It does have coma below T2.8 but this is the only noticeable imperfection. And I absolutely disagree with not using Vazen for narrative work. Any lens can be used for narrative filmmaking if it serves the story, mood etc.
