Really interesting list. I 100% agree with the aclaim of Beaton's Glass of Fashion, it's superb. I have just ordered the Burberry Days thanks, it was on my watchlist. And King of Fashion too, but will wait until I get the main Poiret (Harold Yoda) first, but as you say its always good to get the bio's too. I Bought the Schiaprelli/Prada book a week or so ago but haven't started it yet, so looking forward to that. Am reading the wonderful The Designer Scam (Colin McDowell) which frames the significant changes from quality fashion (couture houses, fabrics, outlook etc) to a more fast fashion era (working to the market, mass consumption, diffusion era etc). Talking of bio's, for McQueen I so much prefer Blood Beneath The Skin (Andrew Bolton) to the Gods & Kings. It goes deeper into his journey and influences. I'm just as much in awe of the McQueen Vault video - which is a must watch for anyone who hasn't seen it. I have millions of recommends on top of what you mentioned. For books about thought processes, theories, ideas and analysis .. >> Thinking Through Fashion: A guide to key theorists (Agnes Rocamora) - a wonderful analysis on where the thoughts and ideas behind collections come from. It's great to see this insight and helps a lot in understanding collections. >> Fashionopolis (Dana Thomas) - clothing, sustainability, and the wider cost. Dana Thomas' Deluxe How Fashion Lost It's Lustre is also a good read. >> Critical Fashion Practice: From Westwood to Van Beirendonck (Adam Geczy) - another great in depth analysis on the thoughts and ideas in fashion. >> Talking Fashion: From Nick Knight to Raf Simons (Jan Kedves) - lovely interviews with loads of intriguing revelations and titbits. .. with a special shout out too 'Menswear Revolution (Jay McCauley Bowstead)' and 'Manus x Machina (Andrew Bolton)' Some broadly cultural moments or places books of interest I would recommend are .. >> Ametora (Marx W David) - looking at mainly Japanese street brands from Kapital, Evisu etc. >> Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion (Akiko Fukai) - This book is a bit of a masterpiece and looks beyond the usual Yohji, Miyake etc to Takahashi and other lesser known designers too. Wonderful pictures to go along with the text too. >> Goth: The Dark Subculture (Gavin Baddeley) - looking beyond fashion into the wider Goth influences and culture, but wonderfully draws back to it's identity in fashion. Nicely illustrated too. >> Fetishism in Fashion (Lidewij Edelkoort) - stunning book, very in depth and analytical, and demonstrating directly how it psychologically and culturally impacts fashion via Leigh Bowery to the avant garde. The easier to get hold of 'Fetish, Fashion, Sex & Power (Valerie Steele)' is also very highly recommended. >> Punk: Chaos To Couture (Andrew Bolton) - a beautiful look into how punk has transcended it's origins and inspires later fashions. Great examples and photos throughout from McQueen, Galliano, Margiela and many more and placing them directly alongside the original punk creations. Little text (but informative) and very visually outstanding. >> Punk: An Aesthetic (Johan Kugelberg) - But this one is probably better to get first as it looks deeper into the origins of Punk, Mclaren, Westwood, Seditionaries etc. Loads of great examples throughout. >> Radical Fashion (Claire Wilcox) - looking at shapes, fabrics, concepts with loads of examples from the likes of JPG, Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Miyake etc, and also the great 'Fashion Futures (Bradley Quinn)' which complements it wonderfully looking further into fabrics, construction etc via the likes of Iris Van Herpen. .. and a special shout here too 'Glam Rock (Alwyn W Turner)' - great book, 'Bus Stop: Influence of 70s on Fashion Today (Lee Bender)', 'Ready, Steady, Go! (Shawn Levy) - great look at the personalities of swinging London and how that energy and creativity blossomed then fell. I'll post up separately my designers recommends later (as this is getting too long xp) :)
Can't thank you enough for this comment. So much insight! I haven't read some of these books you recommended and I hope to buy and read a lot of them, i've added them to my reading list.
There are three I would highly recommend for understanding the fashion industry. 1) The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed The Clothing Business Forever by Teri Agins 2) Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elizabeth L. Cline 3) Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas

Ayo, you're the best my friend. Thank you so much for the shout out, and adding to my own collections now thanks to your recos! Keep up the great work!
I second that. “Ralph Lauren In His Own Fashion” is an excellent book. Written by Allan Flusser, whom also wrote Dressing The Man, another excellent book.
I don't even consider myself a fashion aficionado (nor that I am that crazy for (high) fashion to begin with) but since I have to be at least aware of fashion (even just for a wee bit - otherwise I'd just draw people in tshirts and jeans 😅😂😫🙈🙈) I find your explanations helpful (on why certain works/people in fashion are important etc.) and this book recommendation is especially interesting (esp. to me as a dormant bookworm 😄😅🙈). I'll check them out (along with other recs in the comment section) when I can~~
bought elsa schiaparelli autobio when I was 15 and learned about her as a figure in creating shoulder pads and things like her collab with Dali and her rivalry with coco chanel. might be a good book rec
Thank you for this list ! I'll definitely buy and read some of them ! As a French person, I don't mind about your pronunciation, that doesn't matter and it's not easy to get every French sound. By the way congrats again for the 40k subscribers, glad to see you getting better and better, can't wait for your magazine !
I’m reading through Gods and Kings rn - the creativity written about is truly inspiring, but the hostile corporate takeover of fashion is immensely heartbreaking. Sacrificing creative integrity in the name of profit.
Thank you so much for this video and all the content you put out! Anyone could tell the passion and appreciation you have for the art. You and The Art Assignment have to be my favourite channel on RUclips 🤩
For anyone into the de elopement of Japanese fashion, I fully recommend Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style by W. David Marc... once you del e into the socio-economic and -political aspects of this very well-researched book, you will start drawing a constellation of links to all the obsessive details of some of the biggest Japanese designers working now, from the undarted blazers favoured by Junya Watanabe to the cropped trousers favoured by so many designers.
I have lots of high brow fashion books but my favourite by far is Lo-Life An American Classic , it's a fun read and the best anecdote to everything else out there
So many recommendations, thank you for sharing! The Beautiful Fall is actually the next book I'm starting and I'm reading Fashionopolis at the mo, which I really recommend.
Thank you for your recommendations 🙏🏻 i’m currently reading Le bouquin de la mode by Olivier Saillard and it’s so good. it’s like the bible of fashion history. but i don’t think there’s an english version yet...
I have just pre-ordered Who Cares Wins by Lily Cole and I am really looking forward to reading it! I am doing a speech on sustainable fashion and fast fashion for my English class and I was wondering if you recommend any books/people to watch to help with that? Loved this video!
I'm still on a journey learning about sustainability, I mainly know what I know about sustainability because i've worked for 3 sustainable womenswear brands. A professor called Olga Mitterfellner who is a lecturer at the London College of Fashion has some good books and resources on fashion marketing and sustainability. There are also very good documentaries like "the true cost." If you haven't seen it already.
Books on my recommendation list from an American viewpoint 1. American Dreamer by Tommy Hilfiger 2. Dapper Dan Made in Harlem 3. The Chiffon Trenches 4.Lo-Life An American a Classic 5 Virgil Abloh Figures of Speech
Is it necessary to read about designers you don't really care about or should I go ahead, because right now I'm really interested in Issey Miyake. Do you know where I can learn more about his work apart from some biographies?
I just finished Andre Leon Talley’s, “the Chiffon Trenches” and I wonder what you think of his contribution to fashion, and what you thought of his book. I understand that times change, but I feel he’s being shunted, which is tragic because his immense and encyclopedic knowledge of fashion is seemingly being ignored; there seems to no place for him in the modern world of fashion. It’s very sad, I feel that his status should be elevated to that of living treasure. Any thoughts? Yes, every effort should be made to pronounce the names of designers/artists correctly. It’s not that difficult, and it’s respectful.
I'm yet to read that book but it's 100% on my reading list. I haven't read it only because from what i've heard a lot of it is life stories and experiences rather than talking about fashion history or references of designers and right now i'm just trying to learn more about design history. Andre Leon Talley has been a hidden gem in fashion for sure. He has an immense wealth of knowledge and he's one of the few black people to make it to the top of the industry. It's sad how they shut him out as well as some others members of the old guard of fashion critics (Suzy Menkes comes to mind). That being said, a lot of times he likes to victimise himself but i'm critical of the fact he made it to the top and didn't help any POCs while he was on top. He could've actively changed the thing he always complains about which is the lack of POC journalists and creatives but he didn't.
Dario Davane Luke is all snark and no knowledge. Luke might make you laugh when he rips MGC but it gets old fast because it becomes apparent that he knows nothing and doesn’t really have taste (my god, his outfits!) Completely the opposite of Ayo!

Have a read of David Joselit's 'After Art' which is a 2012 follow on from Benjamin's book, taking us into the era of social media and memes as art
Great books, have most of them but will be putting some of the others on my wishlist!
I want to read these now!
Thanks for this!
Good advice on books

Can you recommend any more books on Prada?
Does anyone have any recommendations for buying his digital books in the US? My bank keeps declining it as a foreign transaction
They should put Alexander's unseen and John Galliano one together lmaoo

Walter Benjamin is amazing, but it's really complicated to grasp it in the first read. He's incredible
It is very interesting!
