Just to clarify because people are commenting things without watching the full video:
My point is, trends can be good because you can be exposed to new styles that you could potentially like. The issue with trends is this chase of "keeping up with the times" and therefore buying into every single trend. At the end of the video I talk about how what you like and what is in trend can definitely have an overlap and ultimately something you can genuinely like can go in and out of trend as time progresses.
Sometimes people debate over the same thing not knowing they were saying the same thing in just different ways. This is one of these topics...
Its just self expression in fashion and art . its as if we ask someone to draw a face and 70% of people drew the same exact face . trend following alter people from truly find in what they like and feel comfort in but as a human race we always had a desire to fit in .

Every big fashion designer (alexander mcqueen, margiela, etc) have already said its not an art. Is definetly something really cool but is not art. As much as I love clothing, I don't get why people are trying to make this a thing.

dont it annoy you how some ppl will let rappers dictate what they wear just cause tyga screamed snapbacks back back in 2011 folks wore snapbacks now migos and drake or whoever they like wear fitted caps and everywhere a guy goes you see dudes with the same stupid hats tilted to the back same color red or whatever they prefer its sad im just saying wear what you like but just because these rappers put it in your face that they like this and that and you see ten dudes walking in a mall with the same hat or shoes on dont mean you gotta spend your money on something you dont want just so you can be quote on quote in style i like snapbacks and im wearing even more now that you have alot of fashion biters these days smh folks wear what you would like to please not because of rappers,media or general population preferences.

But consider that rappers aren’t even making the choices, usually. They’re basically a billboard, used to advertise, and the brands are chosen by professional stylists.
In that sense, the brands/trends they wear tend to actually be cool. It by the time all the clones wear it, you notice it and think it’s dumb. Just part of the cycle.

I've been in love with fashion since I was 15 years old, I'm 51 and I'll never give up this love. Way back in the day I got my fashion fix from MTV Fashion. Back then there were people in the front row sketching the designs and the camera men were on the floor. Fashion trends came around a year later. We never had fast fashion. What we did have was creativity. We made stuff. We had street fashion. I learnt about fast fashion on RUclips, which I find strange. Idea..go back 1 year to your favourite influencers hall and ask yourself where is that thing they had to have. That alone should tell you not to follow trends.
The whole thing about consumerism is spot on, people don't think for themselves anymore

Never thought about the history of trends and how it was (and still kind of is) about classism. Personally I think capitalism really hurts everything and especially art like fashion, people have to constantly consume which leads to fast fashion, stupid trends, poor quality clothing and poor working conditions in foregin countries just so the owners of fashion brands can make a few dollars more.
Also the whole trend of ”flexing” really in its deepest meaning is just classism and trying to fit into a class you want to be in and also leads to people less fortunate or who just dont care enough wearing fake clothing that are mostly made by criminal organizations.
Fashion is a lovely form of art and I love how people can express themselves trough clothing but it doesnt have to be about money or business. People who just happen to be born into a family that has to work in a factory with poor conditions and a horrible wage, they shouldnt have to suffer just so that the western middle class can wear cool clothes for cheap.
We shouldnt have to compromise and destory our enviroment just so producers get the cheapest production price on clothes and make the most profit.
Art should never be about money.

But I also have to admit, these trends is what actually got me into fashion, and I think this goes for a lot of other people as well.
A lot of us started of as Hypebeasts and gradually worked their way into fashion and developed their own style.
So trends arent all bad in my eyes

@@kyo_qi Basically, someone who just wears brands that are currently hyped, usually with a lot of logos on it. A lot of them (not all of course!) don't wear it because they like it, but because they feel like they need to follow the trends to appeal to everyone.
Also I think trends have a good Side-effect. For example when dad sneaks started to grow in hype you suddenly had a really big field of styles to choose from but on the other hand a good fit will always be a good fit even if it doesn’t has anything to do with what’s trendy

It's crazy that when I was in elementary and in middle school, I rarely cared about fashion or brands. I was into more jewelry and just got into shoes in 8th grade. BUT now I see kids walking down the street wearing supreme and they are most likely in middle school and now I wouldn't be that shocked if someone in elementary school wore brands like supreme etc. Just so weird that the trend trickles down the age groups and can change someone's childhood so much. Like, idek what I would be like if my whole childhood was being into fashion just as much as I am now.
Secondary school trends were peak. Found myself wearing black everything since it was comfy and made it impossible to know I was re-wearing the same thing all the time whilst a kid with his designer tee, if he wore it 2 days in a row it'd be obvious. Certi vid again chief
I once tracked my whole year spending - every single reciept was written down almost as I am a company. I saw how much I spend on fashion that year and started crying. This is 3rd year that I buy maybe 2-3 items per year only if I really need it and from local designer😁
think lower classes aspiring to look like upper is starting to change alot last couple decades

Ever since the end of 2018, I've been trying my best to avoid the trends that come and go so I don't make unnecessary purchases. This is a very good video for those who are still trying to be comfortable in finding their own style, and avoiding trends whilst accomodating pieces that will fit your wardrobe in the long run is the way to go.
I have a total of 13 pieces in the wardrobe rn that I have bought over 6 years and I feel like not buying but stitching my own clothes for whenever the lockdown is over. I hate fast fashion.
I only buy things I absolutely love; that give me joy. I have jackets and shoes literally from the 1980's that I still rock. Ironically, 5 years ago I was looking everywhere for square-toed shoes; I've always loved that shape--a 70's throwback (I'm old enough to remember). Then lo and behold, they're all the rage in 2020 and I've stocked up. They'll go out of style again but I don't care.
A pair of Vans/Converse, jeans, a pocket tee and a Harrington jacket is all I need!😂😂😂😂😂
If that works for you don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t look good in it. Those pieces have a lot of longevity and versatility as well
So so true ... You can put so many things together to "create" your own style ...however first you have to know WHAT your style is ...and be confident in YOUR style ...... your personal style has nothing to do with the trend....

Couldn’t agree more. People should ask what is my style, what do I feel my best in? I’m 55 and have learned from fashion mistakes. For me, white dresses in summer with straw sandals, strapping sandals, no name (showing)but well made bags. It’s easy, effortless.
following trends is really bad for you wallet thats true. Just wear what you like and even if it's ''out of trend'' if you like it you can still wear it. I love dries and he always has those crazy patterns that are never really a trend he just does his own thing and I would wear that one pattern for 10 years if I love it doesn't matter if it is a trend or not

You have to have confidence in your own skin and who you are as an individual. You will never have an issue with expressing yourself or a need of approval from others and/or how they see you.

Now if you look at rhudes collection it’s not the greatest thing but I’d say I’d rather spend $5k on 7 pieces or so and have them forever and wear in multiple ways than to wear 2 items from Balenciaga for $5k which won’t fulfill my outfits throughout time. If someone is reading this and agrees let me know.

lnnrt 01 I think it’s the aspect of those buyers are well known so they usually won’t wear the same thing twice because that’s their image. But they do yeah I won’t take that away.
What you mentioned at the very end is so true. I like keeping up with trends to see if pieces that fit my style will be easy to find. It's a joy to see colors or patterns come in that fit my own style, so why not look?

I think the fashion trends can be looked tru the pareto principle: 20% truly unique and original people and 80% unexceptional trend followers who will always buy what those 20% are wearing

Thank you so much for this! As someone who studied and is willing to work in fashion, a lot of friends come up to me asking what's next, what color is in and all that bla bla bla. This video is the perfect answer to that! As for me, I'm working towards launching my own line and at its core I would like it to be a sort of tool for helping people to learn freedom of expression through clothes (new and repurposed vintage/secondhand as well). It's a concept I came across researching the work of a not-so-well known italian designer, Walter Albini, who was one of the very first italian designers and came right before Armani and Versace kind of stole his spotlight. I think his work is extremely relevant today and i thought was fitting for the topic of the video!
Hi there, just wanted to mention about trends. One of the things people do not always take into consideration, is body shape. For example people with shorter legs and longer torsos don't always look good wearing long coats of hipster trousers. A pleated high wasted trouser, or skinny jeans could make their legs look longer. A bomber jacket could be better, than a long coat, where shorter legs can make a person look dumpy with a long length. Trend can be useful if you know your body shape.
So true . I’m still wearing a trench coat that my mom wore and I love it . The qualities are much better back then . The problem is that here in Japan custom trailering is so expensive, if it wasn’t I would reuse all my mom ‘s clothes. I guess I need to learn how to sew 😂
Great coverage bro. I totally agree with your thoughts here. Admittedly, it wasn't until last year I actually understood this aligned with my personal style and opinions when it comes to fashion. I am still until this day working on this very topic, to implement a unique, timeless, sustainable and cost conscious wardrobe for myself. I find it very challenging but great at the same time because I get to learn so much more about myself and contribute to a more environmental friendly approach when it comes to consumerism.

Really interesting insights, in my opinion I don’t see it changing anytime soon. As you said it originated centuries ago and most people aren’t interested about fashion, they just have the money to spend so they’ll get whatever the brands tell them to get
Another sort of trend or a way of influencing is designer labels. I know people (friends even), who's interest is suddenly piqued only once they can see the label on a pair of shoes or a piece of clothing. They were and are not attracted to the actual design aspect until that label is visible, which somehow validates its level of cool (even if it's ugly).
In that case they don’t consider the design and will only consider it when certain brands create it. In that case I can’t really believe they truly like the design they just like the association with a brand. It reminds me of the Balenciaga Zen Sneaker
I love how he talks about the trickle down theory. Having had learnt this before he is giving marketing facts linked to fashion. If I was ever needing to write an essay I'd use his script and turn it into an essay :D
I don't like how in France and other countries there is a ban on certain clothing items like the burka for example

you should do a video of how to really separate whether you are really do appreciate the trend or not. i feel like in my head I have a vision of what I would like to look like but fail to execute it. i.e. i think runway looks will look good on me but ultimately they don't and then you're stuck with an expensive piece not knowing what to do
I've always thought having your personal style is almost common sense when it comes to dressing. However, I've recently discovered that the above opinion is *extremely* rare where I live. It's like everyone accepts following trend as a matter of fact if you want to look good. Not making this up, there was this one time when I suggested for someone to wear what they like and have their own style and everyone simply sees it as a bullshit non-answer. Like I'm suggesting something that is illogical. It's very surreal.

Good points but you've got to work on your video audio. The beginning of most of your clips used in the video are way too loud. I'm not sure if it's just the echo-y nature of your room or your own voice volume. Very off-putting when I'm just listening to the audio. But very informative!
I live in a Scandi country and people here are obsessed with trends, you see the latest sneaker/coat/bag on normal people on the street. I can't keep up with their trend following because it is too expensive to follow on long term and I like to add a couple of trends to my style every season but religiously following trends is impossible. It takes time to adopt a trend to your own style so and if you are not a huge influencer and not getting free stuff from brands, then you need to spend a lot of money to follow the trends- as high street brands are not cheap anymore, conscious brands are super expensive and you can not easily find and thrift- buy all the trends. I believe the style evolves by age and tying alot of clothes, learning what suits you and you feel good in, and which brands you feel closer and happy to shop.
Not everyone who buys makeup or skincare are doing it because they are insecure about their looks. I understand that the companies are using our insecurities to make money, but there are people who just want to take care of their skin and want to use makeup to express themselves.
Thought this is a good video; is inspiring for new designers who wring their hands over whether what they are doing is 'authentic'. Once you realise that that trend forecasting machine -the beast- isn't about you or what you want to see or make you can relax and 'dance to the best of your own drum'. I would really like to experiment more with my style, but i just hate it so much when i see old pictures of me and regret what i was wearing back then. So i stopped and started playing safe
You shouldn’t look back and regret what you were wearing. It’s ok to accept that’s what you liked back then, as people our style and tastes are constantly in state of flux anyway. Please don’t let it all discourage you.

Yesterday I wore gold and black crocodile leggings and a sheer lace top. I walked into a store and someone asked if I was a model. I don’t look anything like a model and everything except for my bag which cost a few hundred bucks ( an Africa shaped bag) cost $10.
It’s about personal style.
I dont remember which ytber said this(IAMFASH), but i agreed with him on subjektive style or rather objective style. Style isnt subjective till a certain point. Not everything is fashion or steeeeeze. But once one is on that level, it becomes subjective. Sorry if this isnt understandable. the ytber is german too ;)

I belong to a third world country and have a bachelore in knitwear. Fashion in my country is very very different. I'm in my early 20's and I distinctly remember the mall culture started in the bigger cities of my country barely less than a decade and a half ago. Before that we had local shops with locally produced stuff and I wouldn't even know much about fashion. Social media was not a thing growing up and it was only during my college that i realized the reality of the fashion industry. Since we still have a lot of poverty, general public actually desn't care about fashion. It is only with a growing economy that the upper class is increasing and hence consumption is changing. For a large part of the two decades of the 21st century, luxury only meant bridal and evening gowns.

I love camo cargo pants. It’s funny cause they were in trend when Wiz Khalifa came out 2011 then after I was the only one really wearing them got flamed. But ASAP brought it back 2017 and everyone said I was a trend follower lol. Nah.

Ultra-fast fashion brands - BOOHOO and Fashion Nova are capitalising on this greatly, compromising on their factory workers' health for the same. The truth of the matter is that the only reason these companies generate revenue is because people are excessively purchasing from them, which in turn leads the companies to exploit and over-work their factory workers.

Trying out new styles is not the same as blindly following trends. It’s good to experiment with different styles and see what you personally like. That’s the journey one must take to find out what their personal style is

The only avant garde fashion designers that I know are Mr Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens Miss Iris Van herpen, Thierry Mugler, Comme des Garçons, Gareth Pugh, Miss Vivienne Westwood, Tsumori Chisato, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Boris Bidjan Saberi and Craig Green.

agreed, the biggest advantage of trends is the ability to test out new items comfortably but having a personal style is the better and more sustainable path
This is how I treat trends. They introduce me to something I wouldn't try otherwise, or normalizes items and combinations that are/were on the fringes (thank god for sneakers with costumes and dresses trend). Later, when the trend passes, I can choose to stick to it because I fell in love with it and It worked for me and it becomes a part of my personal style.

Fashion is good to inspire but inspire things that you like or create your own wardrobe you will not have unusefull clothes, so clothes that will stcuk in your wardrobe for years are legendary clothes. Dont follow trends, find yourself not a yourself into trend

I've never been a fan of trends. I rather imagine a style, an identity and then I plan all my purchases over 3/4 years. I think style is possible with only 54 clothes, shoes and accessories. Less is more
I'll even go ahead to say that in addition to jot following trend if you find yourself caught trapped in a trend, get out of there

I wouldn’t say wearing black is ever a trend because people have been wearing all black for a very long time. Wearing black is not a thing that comes in and out. Black suits will always be a staple regardless of what other colours are “in or out.”
@@FashionRoadman I have a hard time expressing this point correctly. I think a comment I made on another fashion channel is appt. "The ebb and flow of fashion, maximalism to minimalism, tradition to Avant grade, trends to timelessness, hype to hate, and back again..." I have noticed that dressing down wearing black & not showing brands are growing in popularity with people that never dressed this way only because fashion gurus are telling them too, this is in itself a trend. I'm not hating on you or your advice I think your on to something, I just think going off on trends all the time is a bit of a cop-out, I see it the same as the videos telling people to follow trends. Wearing clothing the RIGHT way only depends on the aesthetic of the period and style of clothing, not the trends as they come and go, or an image we are trying to uphold, we should draw from them and always keep the art progressing but when some people purposely wear all black just because Off white is hyped that's the same as if they wore off white because it's hyped. p.s. I wish this example wasn't a real-life one LOL... My point in this mess of words is to follow fashion & trends of all kinds but only to draw from them adding and subtracting fits as the style changes over time, building a collection that will fit into any aesthetic but still is a personal style...
