There ya go; he has laid it all out for those who wish to hear. In order of importance: quality of composition, rhythm (feel), note choice, good instrument. If you check those four boxes, then just remember to keep it simple. Here is a man that embodies what a musician really is. Bravo Allen. And thank you Lee for a fantastic interview.
One of my guitar friend introduce Allen Hinds music to me and I addicted to him. His music is so spiritual and healing, even for those who are not guitar nerd, he deserved a lot of love and respect.
This interview is pure gold - Allen is amazing - I got to attend his workshops during the pandemic - an experience I will always treasure. FYI, How do you stop - but Joni - was written by Dan Hartman - who had passed away the very year Joni recorded it. Allen has such a great ear for picking up nuances. I love the example of keeping the notepad by the bed. With apologies to Todd Rundgren - Allen is a wizard - a true star.
Very true regarding Allan Holdsworth. The slower parts of Allan's playing almost pull you out and captivate you. His outside playing and shredding keeps getting highlighted but the best of his music to me was: - his dynamic touch, including the whammy bar use - just amazing melodic chord progressions - the 'slow' parts of his music where it's almost like someone is singing - his guitar tone, which is a rabbit hole for many
Lee's so lucky he gets to interview and meet the worlds greatest players. what a job! Allen Hinds is the man. killer player and seems so humble. rock on.
The very best 'Captain meets' ever, could listen to Allen all day, both the talking and the playing. Some of those great chords remind me a lot of Pat Metheny. Such an interesting and really nice guy.
What a world. Rick Beato makes a video, talking about talking, and gets a million views. Allen Hinds plays some gorgeous bits and shares years of accumulated music wisdom, and 250 people watch. Like the Captain, I could listen to Allen Hinds "noodle" all night. There are a few others, too, like Eric Johnson and now, John Cordy. Everthing these guys play is beautiful. They just have something. And yeah, Hiram Bullock playing Cactus is a thrill.
I saved this one up for my Sunday morning musical fix, and boy oh boy it did not disappoint! Besides being among the pantheon of guitar legends, Allen is a great teacher and I'd bet, a great mentor as well. Cheers to the Captain for bringing him on, and bringing out the greatness that he has to share. Man, this was really, really good. 👌👍🙏🏻
Discovered Allen about ten years back and have been captivated ever since. Just one of the few that has a unique style and tone. His touch is sublime. I don't blame the Capt. for using that Str*t as a rest in the presence of greatness. Thanks for this. Please check out his music, buy his Cd's and support the artist as always.
Peter Ball I only know about him because xotic sponsors him. But if you’ve been playing awhile the different players do eventually show up in magazines. You remember them? And online. Like Allen.
Allen is the man. the most delicate guitar player in the world. Period. not to mention he is sweet, funny and if you liste carefully, he will teach you lots even without your guitar at hand. sensational. Thanks Captain!
Allen hinds hated my guts because I was in his open counseling every week and also cuz I had him as my private teacher at MI. He never taught me a chord or a lick but he did teach me to use my ears. He was hard on me. But man, I appreciate the time I had to meet him
I discovered his music just a couple of days ago, all because of his signature Xotic guitar (amazing by the way). And now this interview with the captain, Thanks to all there in Andertons. Saludos
I checked all interviews here in the channel and this is far my favorite , so much deep knowledge and tips in this interview , just amazing . Please get Scott Henderson to do a interview with you guys , another killer player and such a nice and funny guy .
Allen is fantastic, one of the best and a genuine 360 player; he can play and talk about what he does! Guitar Techniques magazine has been featuring video tutorials with him for years. We're on the third video series at the moment where he plays over my pieces and then discusses his approach afterwards.
Thank you, Anderstons! 42:50 the first time I came across this "pull string" technique was a Steve Via lesson of sorts. Steve was explaining to pull the string, then bend it. Almost a circular motion. IIRC, Steve was talking about how it was a true vibrato since the note goes flat/pitch/sharp. Anyway, it takes a bit practice but fun to do and cool effect when it fits. Cheers!
Man...this noodling is next level. Instant jaw drop hypnotics. I could listen to that for hours on end too, Mr Anderton. This guy just hits 3 "random" chords and it's an instant wow moment...essential musician.
Allen is one of my favourite guitarist, Bought the Falling up album first , blew me away , so much colour in his playing. After hearing that bought everything else!
Outstanding! Bring us more underrated players!!! And what a chill dude. I first found out about Allen Hinds from his True Fire class, which is so awesome. And who doesn't appreciate another that can get down with some fungus?
Oh man that was awesome, Hinds is a super player. Chord knowledge really is the holy grail. Great interview also by the Captain, dude is an absolute pro!
I know there's more than just the interview, but I'd love to see a captain meets with some more of the most famous recording studio guitarists. They can be really under appreciated.
If you get nothing else out of this amazing interview... TED GREENE. If you love guitar, and you don't know who Ted Greene was do yourself a favor and find out.
That video of Ted playing at a wedding party and the ambience of those beautiful chords, timeless. Ted has a special place for a lot of people and deservedly so.
Love when you do these types of interviews. Especially when you ask how they went about learning early on and what was their learning process as they progressed. So much to learn from that and all else they discuss. You and the rest of crew rock! One of my favorite RUclips channels hands down. Keep up the great work! 👍🎸🎶
What a genuinely lovely bloke he seems! Funny, humble, calm and switched on and just a beautiful tone and evidently a really amazing amazing artist. I'm shopping for Allan Hinds tunes after this video.
Players should listen more to Guitarists like Allen Hinds. This guy has magic in his Fingers. His Interpretation, Sound, Tone, Phrasing, Dynamics...has a lot to teach to us. Truly inspiring Guitar Player. So Experienced. Hes one of those Musicians that when they grab their instrument and hit the first note, you know they are Killers and know well their Instrument, how to Dominate it.
Lee, Ted Greene is the Chord Chemist, the master of harmony, the better book is modern chord progressions, lesser-known but it's the practical companion to chord chemistry. Possibly the most important two-volume guitar book of the century.
Hahaha I LOVE this video... I went to Berklee in the mid 1980s and had almost the exact same experiences! I'm lucky too because I'm in LA now and I can see Allen play locally.
What may be received as real creativity must still be accessible to a wide range of listeners and so must be based not on true originality, in a theoretical sense, but displays the player's response to what is heard and the feeling which accompanies that multi-faceted stimulus. A sense of connectivity tightening the relationship of the artist to the art and thereby drawing the listener into that exchange is the real connection between artist and listener. Never forget that the artist must continue listen while still engaged with the music. I remember hearing Jimi Hendrix within months of his death re-delivering his live set but not engaged in listening and only later realizing why his live playing (at that time) seemed to have died before he did.
This went live on a Monday, should have been on a Sunday, this deserves all the eyes and ears it can get :) I was listening on RUclips red with locked screen making me think you should release some of this long form videos as podcasts
Had to stop the vid because i wanted to jot a note and didn't want to miss a lick. My jot: AH has the most sublime tone. It embodies a unique spectrum from clear to lovely filth having both breadth and depth. Thank you AH. You are truly one of the gods of music. And thank you, LEE for reminding me to caress the strings.
My favourite album with Hiram Bullock on it apart from his solo album "Give it what U got" is Carla Bley´s record "Sextett". His playing is phenomenal there.
It's back! I noticed this was posted a couple days ago, but was taken down before I had a chance to watch it.... Makes me wonder what was said that they had to go back and edit out?!?!! :)
What great command of his tone. The thing about these great guitar players is the can sound amazing on $400 worth of equipment. Give them some great gear and they just give you heaven.
Cool to that he referenced John Levanthal because he and John are two of my favorites in terms of taking something seemingly simple and making it incredible!
I could listen to this guy for hours...so much to learn about tone, technique, interpretation and musicality! I share all of his influences from the 70's...with a preference for maestros like Pat Metheny (doesn't often get a mention on this site!) and Richard Thompson. Wonderful interview and Lee just let him talk away with any interruptions!
It’s simple for me. I see Allen Hinds, I click. Criminally underrated guitarist. Glad you’re getting him some exposure. He deserves it!
Never heard of him. But he is amazingly fantastic.
He's in my top 5 players that I LOVE. INCREDIBLE playin for me
I had the pleasure of taking lessons with Allen in LA. He is the most engaging player I've seen in person.
What I learned from this is, Allen put in the work.
Allen is the most humble talented guitarist on the planet 🌏
One of my guitar friend introduce Allen Hinds music to me and I addicted to him. His music is so spiritual and healing, even for those who are not guitar nerd, he deserved a lot of love and respect.
Finally! Allen Hinds is a guitar monster! First one was Robben Ford, next was Allen Hinds, now get Jimmy Herring and you have the tone trifecta!
Jim Sieben Good call for that style of fusion!
You just listed out a bunch of my favourite players. Scott Henderson, fits nicely in to that list too I think and Landau.

The best "Captain Meets" so far, talking about great bands and players !!!!!
I really enjoy Allen- so cool and great- and Lee has a great interview style- super comfortable and relaxed. Thank you both
One of the best Captain Meets ever! Allen is a great player and genuinely nice man
I was lucky enough to attend the masterclass with Allen later that day. What an inspiration and lovely bloke to meet afterwards. :-)
Yes me too, it was at Taiwan. He is so humble and inspiring.
One of my absolute favorites!! Exquisite musician!!
Lee's so lucky he gets to interview and meet the worlds greatest players. what a job! Allen Hinds is the man. killer player and seems so humble. rock on.
Mr Lee, Captain Sir. This is the right stuff. This is how one does an interview. You were both a treat.
The very best 'Captain meets' ever, could listen to Allen all day, both the talking and the playing.
Some of those great chords remind me a lot of Pat Metheny.
Such an interesting and really nice guy.
The best interviews are where the interviewer says very little. This is one of those. Loved listening to Allen.
Lee's a natural!
What a world. Rick Beato makes a video, talking about talking, and gets a million views. Allen Hinds plays some gorgeous bits and shares years of accumulated music wisdom, and 250 people watch. Allen's such a great player, a great guy too boot. so underrated and unsung guitar hero. Wish we could see more of him on this side of the pond.
Thanks for introducing use to Allen, love his playing style and he’s a funny guy kinda reminds me of a guitar playing Alan Alda
Allen is the man. the most delicate guitar player in the world. Period. not to mention he is sweet, funny and if you liste carefully, he will teach you lots even without your guitar at hand. sensational. Thanks Captain!
One of the best "The Captain Meets..." show... Allen is one of the best of the best!
Allen is such a creative and fantastic guitarist, thank you.
What an absolute beast of a musician. Great to see him on this channel.
Certainly my favorite of this series so far,Allen Hinds is a master and a huge inspiration for me.
that Esquire just sounds magical... I'm not that easily impressed with guitarists anymore, but I'm really impressed with his playing and that sound!!!
Allen hinds hated my guts because I was in his open counseling every week and also cuz I had him as my private teacher at MI. He never taught me a chord or a lick but he did teach me to use my ears. He was hard on me. But man, I appreciate the time I had to meet him

Dude, this guy was walking around MI practically my whole time as a student there, and I never knew this dude was such a gangster.
Are you saying that you studied at MI and never got to know who AH is? Please don't say that's true :P
I f*cking smashed the like button before the Andertons intro was even over! Anybody else? :D
I checked all interviews here in the channel and this is far my favorite , so much deep knowledge and tips in this interview , just amazing .
Please get Scott Henderson to do a interview with you guys , another killer player and such a nice and funny guy .
Great show, guys! Allen is amazing!
Been rewatching this. I agree with Hinds on so many levels... esp his love of Leventhal, Steuart Smith, Shawn, etc. Under appreciated dude!!
Allen is fantastic, one of the best and a genuine 360 player; he can play and talk about what he does! Guitar Techniques magazine has been featuring video tutorials with him for years. Great interview!! Nice chords and beautiful playing. Allen Hinds is a GREAT musician and a MASTER of the tone. Thank you. ;)
Allen is one of my favourite guitarist, Bought the Falling up album first , blew me away , so much colour in his playing. After hearing that bought everything else!
One of my favourite musicians. What an amazing touch he has.
Best one yet. What a deep cat, so intelligent and articulate. Thank you.
Very enjoyable video! Thanks for the shout out Lee! Excellent interviewing again - you should be on TV TV mate!
What a joy to listen through! Nice job Cap and Allen
I know there's more than just the interview, but I'd love to see a captain meets with some more of the most famous recording studio guitarists. They can be really under appreciated.
Fellow Alabamian here. Warmed my heart to see and hear you interview Allen.
Amazing interview. Such a unique and beautiful guitarist
What a legendary interview. Hats off to both! So many name drops to look up!
And definitely going to check Hinds' last work
Thank you....Allen is my guitar tone, harmony, melody HERO. What a great way to zoom in on his playing and life.
If you get nothing else out of this amazing interview... TED GREENE. If you love guitar, and you don't know who Ted Greene was do yourself a favor and find out.
Can you tell about the 20 chords he was talking about, where in chord chemistry can I find them? Thanks
That video of Ted playing at a wedding party and the ambience of those beautiful chords, timeless.
Ted has a special place for a lot of people and deservedly so.
@@sandrosadhukhan Sorry man, wish I could help.
Bought both his books in the late 80s. Great books, changed my musical life.

Cool guy. Great feel player. Tone is great.
What a genuinely lovely bloke he seems!
Funny, humble, calm and switched on and just a beautiful tone and evidently a really amazing amazing artist.
I'm shopping for Allan Hinds tunes after this video.
Allen looks like the Captain, just in older and long hair. Love the video!
I was reminded that I know almost nothing about music. What a talent!
Thank you so much for this interview ! Such a laid back guy! Next is some Xotic XSC stocking at Andertons 😃
Players should listen more to Guitarists like Allen Hinds. This guy has magic in his Fingers. His Interpretation, Sound, Tone, Phrasing, Dynamics...has a lot to teach to us. 38:46 that progression moved me. Im trying to learn it by ear right now. Ill watch the rest later. The articulation was perfect
Just learnt it kinda. So satisfying. This guys fantastic. Gonna look for more of him as thr playing is just godly
Your best video, interview and guest ever! Thank you!
@1:16:20 Love the "Hanna Barbera/Brady Kids" air guitar!
Hahaha I LOVE this video... I went to Berklee in the mid 1980s and had almost the exact same experiences!
I'm lucky too because I'm in LA now and I can see Allen play locally.

Awesome! So inspirational! What a wonderful and amazing guy Allen is. I would love to just sit and drink and chat with him. Great interview Lee!
Finally! Allen Hinds is the man! Really love him!
Allen is the best! I saw him playing in Rotterdam a few times ago. Great!!! Jeanclaude
This guy makes me want to see a captain meets Bill Frisell.
Or William Tyler
Man I've been waiting for this .awesome!
Night Music was a phenomenal show. I wish there was something like that now!
Great session and what a nice guy
Love Mr Hinds. Have a few of his albums. What a sonic palette.
Great interview with a great guitar player and musician.
Fantastic musician !
What a great session. One of the most underrated players out there. Please do yourself a favour and check his albums out.
This went live on a Monday, should have been on a Sunday, this deserves all the eyes and ears it can get :) I was listening on RUclips red with locked screen making me think you should release some of this long form videos as podcasts
Hiram was alive for much longer after the Sting album and had tons of solo albums. He died in 2008. Search them out, well worth it.
Was the original Late Night w Letterman band
I really enjoy these, Lee. In this case, as with most of these interviews, I had no idea who he was, but the interview was fascinating.
Had to stop the vid because i wanted to jot a note and didn't want to miss a lick. My jot: AH has the most sublime tone. It embodies a unique spectrum from clear to lovely filth having both breadth and depth. Thank you AH. You are truly one of the gods of music. What an awesome video! I feel bad that I've never heard of him, even though I've listened to plenty of Natalie Cole.
His hair..And yes, best Captain Meets so far! Saw Mr. Hinds first on Tim Pierces Channel and have been a fan since
My favourite album with Hiram Bullock on it apart from his solo album "Give it what U got" is Carla Bley´s record "Sextett". His playing is phenomenal there.
It's back! I noticed this was posted a couple days ago, but was taken down before I had a chance to watch it.... Makes me wonder what was said that they had to go back and edit out?!?!! :)
It was missing sound in several instances of close-up playing. That's one big reason.
What great command of his tone. The thing about these great guitar players is the can sound amazing on $400 worth of equipment. Give them some great gear and they just give you heaven.
Cool to that he referenced John Levanthal because he and John are two of my favorites in terms of taking something seemingly simple and making it incredible!
....unless you got some.... hilarious ! and his comment about Dicky Betts live with the Marshall and Les Paul, right on point
Love these ‘meets ‘
Thank you so much Cap! Another fantastic interview.
I could listen to this guy for hours...so much to learn about tone, technique, interpretation and musicality! I share all of his influences from the 70's...with a preference for maestros like Pat Metheny (doesn't often get a mention on this site!) and Richard Thompson. This guy is a true genius great interview
Great player.
So entertaining and inspiring. Well done both. Ashamed to say I hadn't heard of Allen Hinds - already started correcting that gap.
I love Allen Hinds!!!
Great talk, great playing.
Fantastic guitarist! \m/
55:17 "I don't know...I don't really play acoustic..." 55:35 *mind blown*
What a lovely guy! Should say lovely and talented guy!
Really interesting that Captain👍🏻
Thanks for this Mr captain. I find these inspiring, I can relate to him.
