  • In the early 1970's Leeds United were the dominant force in English Football. Central to this was their midfield. Irishman Johnny Giles and their Scottish captain Billy Bremner. As England flounder without Kalvin Phillips in the Euro's, are there lessons to be learned from football in the 1970's?

Check your facts Peter. They got called dirty Leeds in press releases after the battle of Goodison in 1964. They were no more or less dirty than any other team at that time, but not being from the south of England, the press persisted and the name stuck. Nothing to do with how they played the game.

'Winning machine ...' hardly. They won two league titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup and two Fairs Cups. Compare that to the Celtic side of time in the late sixties and seventies, or the Liverpool sides of the 1970s and 1980s. No comparison with trophies.

They were known as dirty Leeds because they were dirty.
