  • Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries hosted this episode of Apologia Radio/TV. Dr. White teaches on the transmission of the text of Scripture. It is a fantastic and enlightening episode that digs deep into the conversation of 1) how we got our Bibles and 2) the translation of the Text of Scripture.
    This is a very important subject. We want to encourage you to not get frustrated by the conversation if you are new to it. Pick up a copy of The King James Only Controversy by Dr. White. Also, you can listen to the Dividing Line on Alpha and Omega's RUclips channel. There are many shows, lectures, and debates that Dr. White has done on the subject.
    Christians need to know about how God has preserved his Word and how we work out translations. God calls us to have a reasoned defense for everyone who asks us a reason for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15). This episode aims to help with that.

    Dr. White is right on. Every church needs to be teaching about the historicity of the Bible, how we came to have translations, original texts, manuscript copies etc. Society at all levels is now out to deceive and undermine Truth. Apologetics is essential to defense of Truth in the marketplace of ideas.

    Dr. White basically gave us our modern day reformation conflict in apologetics in this conversation. I believe he has taken on the correct position and God has raised him up, specifically, to address these issues given the state of attacks against Christianity. Luther would not recant after being called upon to. We have to have our eyes open to the manuscript conflicts in order to provide "an answer" to the nay sayer. Great video. Praying for both reformed Baptists and the Presbyterian soldiers. Soli Dei Gloria.

While watching this, i had the idea to make an illustrated video that could go along with the audio from this video. Sorta how The Bible Project has illustrated the Bible in order to help people follow along with the story & the concepts. I don't even know how to begin something like that though. Anyway, good job. Don't shy away from getting into the nitty gritty details. The details are very beneficial to know. Truth is truth, and if we are saying we believe this is the word of God, then we have nothing to fear. :)

The dispersion of the texts over time & distance combined with the overwhelming agreement bring confidence in God like nothing else can. Most likely Dr White is right about the Critical or Minority Texts. I love the word for word translations derived from both the TR & Minority texts & use them both. All I can say is thank God for loving humanity enough to give us scripture that reveals himself to mankind.

      James White is wrong. KJV is the most perfect translation. Using all
      the other perversions (I mean versions) just causes needless confusion
      because these versions contradict each other, not to mention they are
      all based on the Alexandrian (Egyptian) corrupted manuscripts. They are
      all "for profit" translations that have to be at least 15% different
      from each other to be considered an original work and therefore be
      copyrightable. How on earth can anyone decipher God's true word by
      reading hundreds of contradictory modern translations? The whole idea
      is ludicrous. Trust the old KJV that stood the test of time.
      Because James has "Dr." in front of his name people fall for all the
      bull he spews. Like the saying goes -- if you can't dazzle them with
      brilliance, baffle them with bull.

    Sad how many people hate on Dr. James White and don't even understand the point here. He's arguing that using only ONE version of the "English Translated Bible" (KJV) is not the best approach when the topic is, PROVING the INERRANCY of SCRIPTURE! He's NOT saying the KJV or NKJV shouldn't be used. He is simply saying, if you're going to defend the Word against the reprobates, KJV Onlyism is a losing tactic.

    • @SoftHandsGarage
      @SoftHandsGarage 6 лет назад

      I didn't catch that he said you should be using ANY English translated Bible. It was a month ago or so I watched though, so I could be wrong. Though I understood his point in general to be that we need to study the oldest/most reliable manuscripts and ascertain God's Word from that.
      What I heard in regard to any single script or translation being used is how 'illogical' it would be to believe any single script or translation could possibly be the sum total of God's Inspired Word. I understand the argument and certainly would acknowledge the possibility, I just disagree that is what God meant by His promise to preserve his Word. Therefore, probability means nothing to me in the face of knowing God's ability to perform a miracle counter to logic, our knowledge or understanding. Oh, and the Bible doesn't tell us we need to prove anything to anyone, just tell them the truth of His Word. At least that's what the KJV says :)
      Anyway, no hate from me. I just disagree and I do like to have a little fun pointing to hypocrisy when I find it.

    • @jtslev
      @jtslev 6 лет назад

      WALYS GMC I see what you’re saying but once again this is what a lot of people are misunderstanding. By the way, I use both KJV and NKJV the most out of any other translation currently and love them. The point of his arguments against NKJV and KJV “onlyism” is that if we are going to defend our faith using logic (a God given tool in life) against those who wish to mislead (IE. satan), don’t you think it’s nice to have the counter argument?! Do you not believe God works in mysterious ways and do you honestly believe that no one has come to Jesus or been converted due to White’s ministries? Does it not say IN THE BIBLE that we should should show the opposers the light and in so doing God may grant them faith. I’m not saying the Gospel isn’t the centerpiece in scripture, what I’m saying is sometimes the road to hearing the Gospel is through these types of discussions. I believe God is using Dr. White in incredible ways. But at the end of the day, if you can’t see it that way, you can’t see it that way... God bless!

    • @jtslev
      @jtslev 6 лет назад +1

      WALYS GMC as far as ANY English translation, he clearly says that there ARE bad versions out there. So I dont know what you meant by that first statement.
      But just to reiterate on my last reply. The Word has been through a lot to get to where it is today and I believe that God uses certain “means” to preserve His Word to stand the tests of time. Just like He has always done throughout history, and I think perhaps Dr. White is one of those “means” in being able to prove with sound logic how to defend scripture against scrutiny.

    • @SoftHandsGarage
      @SoftHandsGarage 6 лет назад +1

      Allow me to clarify a few things first off. I definitely, absolutely, believe that Dr. White is a wonderful, God fearing person who (as I have stated previously) is uniquely gifted by God in a way that glorifies His name. I am very thankful that the Lord has given us men like Dr. White who can clearly and intelligently explain the ‘logic’ that IS God. I believe that gives believers a lot of strength in our convictions and helps break down what could otherwise be barriers to those who are ‘on the cusp’. However, I don’t believe any apologetics do anything for those who are willingly ignorant. So, in that regard, there is only so much concern I have that God and His plan fit into what we determine is ‘logical’. At some point we will, in all things, have to ultimately point to faith and trust in God and you can bet, as soon as we do, we will be attacked by the opposition. My only reason for commenting on Dr. White is to point out, you can’t follow a ‘person’, you need to follow God. He is dogmatic on this topic and I have detected a hypocrisy in his teaching on this one that I think proves that point.
      Additionally, to clarify my position on the Bible versions, yes I absolutely believe that people have been saved under conviction of the Holy Spirit while studying most versions of the Bible. Also, there are some people I wouldn’t even discuss this topic with. For example, I have an aunt who uses the NIV. She is a relatively new believer who is fervently studying God’s Word and very excited about it. The last thing I think she needs to hear is that I don’t think she is using the ‘right’ Bible. If, some years down the road, the topic of versions comes up and SHE wants to discuss it I MIGHT, in a loving way, explain my OPINION on the matter, but it will be a God lead thing, not something I am dogmatic about and can’t wait to do. Also, I am very open to the idea of NEVER bringing it up if that’s the way it goes. My primary goal on this topic would be only to help someone grow, and never to discourage someone.

    • @SoftHandsGarage
      @SoftHandsGarage 6 лет назад

      My statement “I didn't catch that he said you should be using ANY English translated Bible.” Was in regard to your assertion that he is arguing that you shouldn’t use just ONE English version (paraphrased). My point being, I didn’t hear him suggest you should even use multiple version of the English Bibles, but that you need to study the ancient manuscripts.
      To this point I had not given my reason for believing what I do on the topic, but your last comment prompts it. You brought up the ‘means’ God uses to preserve is Word and that is exactly where the difference comes from. We obviously all agree that God says He WILL preserve His Word and we know He is faithful to do so. We are really only talking about two possibilities here. One is that His Word is preserved in multiple ancient manuscripts and we need to study them all to determine what His word is from them. The other is that He preserved His Word in a single location (i.e.- KJV or some other version). I obviously believe the later. The reason I do is exactly what you stated and that is I don’t believe that God would require an individual or multiple individuals to be the ‘means’ in which He provides it to us. For me, preservation includes access. Requiring men to provide His Word to all of us, I believe, isn’t something God (knowing the nature of man) would do, and certainly isn’t required to do simply to make it ‘logical’ to us. I don’t intend to rely on someone else to tell me what God’s Word says. If the answer to that is that I need to learn ancient languages and study enumerable manuscripts I would disagree with that understanding of ‘study to show thyself approved’. God has MANY commandments for me in living my life. I seriously doubt I could become that educated and spend that much time through study and complete the tasks He has for me on this earth. Dr. White does it, so why can’t I? Well, that’s where we go back to the unique gifts God gave us. Anyway, that’s where I’m sure we will agree to disagree.

      @Bronze Getting saved is just the beginning of our walk with Jesus. Reading the Bible (particularly the KJV) regularly grounds us in our faith and facilitates our growth to spiritual maturity. People reading the KJV tend to be more conservative in their world view, wheras the other versions facilitate a more liberal world view (softer stance on homosexuality, etc.) The more liberal we get, the more worldly which is unfortunately the opposite of Godly. Hope this makes sense.

    I think the ultimate goal of understanding the word of God is knowing how well he has preserved his word despite different language translations. KJV is fine for me. I also like the Nkjv and I dont see why there is such controversy from preachers like Steven Anderson, when we are RIGHTLY DIVIDING the bible. Learning about its history is just that more enriching to the true believer.

Sort like a map for a bird’s eye-view of the chronological appearances of the texts that apparently were not there in the most ancient manuscripts. Thanks guys for the video and the time. Shalom!

    I find this very interesting because back in 1830 before all this information came about the translations of the Bible . Joseph Smith said we believe the Bible to be the word of God , as far it is translated correctly. Every Christian Denomination condemn Joseph for saying such a thing that the bible is totally true. Now they agree with Joseph.

    I’d be interested to hear Dr White discuss the omission of Junia for Junias, and now put back again in many translations today. I know I would conclude differently with him, probably, regarding Junia as an apostle, but I’d still be interested what his commentary would be. If anyone can direct me to any conversation he’s had regarding this that would be great.

    Great insight on this podcast! I knew a lil how the KJV was flawed and only had limited transcripts, but this level of detail I love!! It baffles me how people will reject facts and conjure up hate to someone who is just trying to be as honest and objective as possible. Thanks Dr White, I greatly appreciate it. I find it funny when people say White isn’t Christian or just hates the KJV because White grew up on the KJV. Somebody needs to talk about this stuff because cynical(non-believing) people spread this faulty info about how NT texts aren’t not reliable.

    • @kjvitor
      @kjvitor Год назад

      Ever wonder for a momment JW could lie about this subject? KJV flawed? Are you kidding me, If was flawed why they didn't gave us a definitive version of the Bible and stopped making so many flawed versions?
      Have you compared the verses from KJV that mentioned Jesus giving glory to Him, referencing to Jesus as Lord in the right way while the New Versions reference him as the son of Joseph sometimes? calling Jesus only to he that manifested in the flesh?
      In debates against muslims that don't believe Jesus is God manifested in the flesh I only use KJV because I know they can mention a verse that failed to give glory to Jesus.
      James White thinking can work on theory but isn't effective on practice, you can't practice sola scriptura or "The Bible is the infalible, innerant and perfect words of God" when you claim you'll always find "errors" in the very Bible you say is perfect.

      Accuracy is of no importance in the modern Bible translations that are owned by the publishing companies that put them out. In order for a work to be considered original and copyrightable a significant percentage (15%) has to be changed. When a certain translation stops making money, they put out a new slightly different one. So people are duped when they are taught to compare versions as they contradict each other. KJV is God s Bible!! It stood the test of time unchanged over 100s of years.

    • @yunger2646
      @yunger2646 5 лет назад +3

      @From The Darkness To The Light - There were no doctrinal corrections...only the typographical errors were corrected..most of them within the first couple of decades. It had 783,137 words with an error margin of approx. 400. This is remarkable considering the typesetting was done by hand in mirror image. Many modern books contain typos even with our modern software technology with spelling and grammar correction. By 1769 English underwent spelling standardization, eg. starres corrected to stars. KJV haters would have you believe that these were doctrinal or serious textual changes.

    54:17 -- the majority text contains the PA. One should be aware that this majority is not close. The PA is in over 1,300 manuscripts (yes, the note in the NKJV is off quite a bit.) -- about 85%.

    When I heard about the NIV calling Jesus a liar and a sinner..I thought oh no .. so I checked my bible but found I was using the NIV instead of the KJV my Dad gave me... and I checked it out..sure enough.. Jesus is asked if he is going to town in the NIV and Jesus says no..and then goes to town. In The man telling about the NIV says a young boy asked him if Jesus was a liar..he himself had not noticed this... KJV Jesus says he is not going to town yet. In the NIV it says that to be angry is a sin, Jesus was often angry so he was a sinner. In the KJV its says to be angry without reason is a sin. From there I have to say I was stunned by the taking out the name of the Lord and replacing it with he.. with changing words just because of the copy right.. changing whale to giant sea creature. At least 70 times, the NIV omits GOD! * Jesus - 15; Christ - 25; Lord - 16; God - 13.Here are a couple other examples that most fake bibles have..
    NIV changes "only begotten of the Father" to "One and Only" which is a New Age title for some cosmic god.Luke 4:4
    (KJV) And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
    Luke 4:4 (NIV) Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone.'"
    John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, ...
    John 3:16 (NIV) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, ...
    Since the NIV itself says that Adam is Gods son how can Jesus be his one and only son. This is clearly done on purpose.. and the NIV is not the only one..all copy written bibles that came out since 1950s and later have to change at least 30 % of what is there.. that is why heaven becomes sky dome..and why the Message has the word sex in it more than the word Lord..

      “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3: 5-6).
      Youre using your own understanding, Jesus also commands to be FAITHFUL, so anyone can be faithful to the Lord Jesus by using the NIV or whatever translation. The Lord didn't call for us to "use the most accurate Bible" no, He calls for FAITHFUL service to Him, not being accurate upon translations of scripture.
      Focussing on the "thing" aka kjv onlyism is also being a pharisee, using the tradditions of men, to circumvent GODS LAW. by being a KJV onlyist you're being a pharisee.
      Jesus constantly talks about the HEART and our standing in Him from a HEART perspective. thats why we have to believe in OUR HEARTS that God rose Jesus from the dead and we shall be saved! - romans 10:9
      dont focuss on the "thing" thats also called being a pharisee and a legalist.
      Focus on being FAITHFUL to Jesus and trust in HIM for your salvation. use whatever GOOD Bible translation as you wish.
      There are many bad ones, I personally use the KJV but I am NOT a onlyist.
      God Bless

      @@kaizze8777 She is not relying in her own understanding, she is SHOWING what the different version say and telling you to WATCH FOR this differences if you realy want to rely in this modern versions.
      You can't trust 100% in new versions man!
      Tell me when she is being a pharisee? Being a KJV onlyist is not about being a pharisee.
      If you don't have standards how you are going to know what's right and wrong.
      Also, by not being a "pharisee" as you say, or legalistic, are accepting every sort of strange practice inside the church, drinking, smoking, adult entertainment, so on and so forth!
      You can't say that's holy practice and better than a "KJVO legalistic pharisee".
      Most KJVO I see are preaching the word, have the gospel right, their salvation right. the good and the bad from the Bible and by the title KJVO as you expect ARE LOVERS OF THE WORDS OF GOD!!! And are trying to live by then, enjoying everything that it says. Not some scholar or afraid of debating an intelligent arrogant self righteous man that can make a mistake here and there!
      If we KJVO sound so legalistic, why we do so? Telling you to stop fornicating, stop drinking, stop cussing, stop watching wicked movies, because the Bible tell to do it, and warn us about the works of the flesh.
      Accusing us for being legalistic is just an excuse to keep doing what you do that is wrong, and you know what THAT'S ON YOU, but don't tell us we are legalistic for not agreing with your behavior.

    1-hour mark: the "The-text-has-grown" idea sounds fine in theory, but when Royse looked at seven important papyri, he concluded that the copyists made more omissions than additions, at a rate of about 6:4. If scribes really tended to include anything, we'd have a much bigger text than the Byzantine Text. Perhaps one should ask White about P75 and John 9:38-39 sometime.

    I have a question. What's up with the church and booze. Now, I don't drink (I was WAY too good at it, so I gave it up, er God did), but like since the dawn of man, up until a hundred years ago, everyone drank booze and married 12 year olds. Now, I know that times have changed and young people now have the awesome gift of being children much longer, but what gives with peeps looking down on someone having a beer and a burger? I never got that one.
