- Sunday morning runbys in Cass at the 2006 Railfan Weekend, including several runbys and the famous three locomotive "race".
Cass Railfan Weekend is sponsored by the Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Association at the Cass Scenic Railroad, bringing several hundred steam and logging enthusiasts together for a weekend of incredible mountain railroading.

ha, i've been there and i can't belive that heisler was onthat spur siding! it's such crap haha! well...then again... so was the track back in the logging days haha. awesome video!!!

LOL! Moral of the story: In a drag race, if you're in a Shay, and the other dude is in a Heisler, you're gonna get pwned.
Lotta black smoke- somebody needs to read up on L.D. Porta- could save lots of fuel, extend the tube life, and cut emissions to nothing.
The point of the Shay was never speed.
The locomotives were intended for use on really poor track that was laid & shifted to follow logging operations. Even power without slipping.
There were Shays still at work in the Phillipines in the 70s & a sugar mill had one too. The main operation was logging.
The logging engines burnt offcuts of mahogany. The sugar mill engine ran on bagasse, the waste left over after the cane was crushed. Very poor fuel, but it was free & produced volcanic fire effects.
