    I trying to remember the last time an HBCU's majorette team was invited to a national show and celebrated. Happy for theses women, but the J- Settes, Dancing Divas, Golden Girls, Stingettes are beautiful and amazing. Let's see them celebrated. Hopefully that will be the outcome of this.

      Also, Texas Southern University “The Motion of The Ocean”, Southern University “Fabulous Dancing Dolls”, Jackson State “Prancing J-Settes, and Prairie View A&M “Black Foxes” all who recently celebrated 50 years.
      The Southern University “Fabulous Dancing Dolls” has a docu series now on ESPN+ on “Why Not Us”. This could’ve been the opportunity to open up the conversation of this type of dancing to the masses that are at HBCU’s. And how it has inspired many of this culture. But the ball was dropped and research of this failed.
      Being a former HBCU dancer for Texas Southern University “The Motion of The Ocean” this doesn’t sit well with me that the inspiration for this is ignored.

While it's great they've started a space for this kind of dance at this college, at this point these young ladies are imitating HBCU's finest who should be given their moment in this kind of spotlight as the originators of this type of dance.

    I get what they are doing but at the same time I just can’t support it. Majorettes have been doing this at HBCU’s for years but because these women are dancing in front of white people, they get put on national television. The people who think this is okay don’t understand that HBCU’s are not going to benefit from this at all even though it’s their culture. This is just going to be shared amongst PWIs until you have all white teams doing these routines. At that point not only will the majorettes lose their meaning but the dancing style also loses their meaning as well. Because no matter how good you are as a black woman, there will always be a white woman doing the same thing but mediocre receiving mainstream media attention. They should’ve just brought an actual hbcu majorette team instead of sponsoring this team. This makes no sense.

I'm from the Westcoast and attending school in Southern States was just not a topic of conversation, I'm happy for them I'm glad to see this at a PWI and I hope and pray for this institute like others to embrace it and enjoy it for what it is, Just because you are an ALUMNI of an HBCU or H.S dosen't mean you have to leave your base culture behind to attend a PWI, take it with you and teach others the positivity of Attending such GREAT SCHOOLS THAT ARE HBCU'S

    • @jacklyneverage3881

      Yeah, that sounds good, until white women will take over and be the face of these newly established majorette dance teams and the white schools will find some way to capitalize on this and profit from it. Sometimes, sharing the culture doesn't always end up a win for us in the end.

    • @billjohnson113
      @billjohnson113 10 месяцев назад

      I bet it would have been so dope to go to an HBCU back in the day. Sucks they weren't promoting them as much on the west coast when you were graduating high school. But it's really cool how much more awareness there is for HBCUs now. I can understand wanting the opportunity to check out other schools too though. And you're so right - just because you go to a PWI doesn't mean you have to leave your culture behind. If anything, bringing it with you and sharing it is what's up. Representing your HBCU roots and Black excellence at a predominantly white school, like what this majorette team is doing, just spreads more love and appreciation in my book. It's all about taking pride in where you came from no matter where you end up. I'm glad this team brings their style and makes people see how dope HBCU marching bands are too. That kind of rep gives a lot of people way more options to consider for their future.

      @@aquanoelle2260 Makes sense. I saw a lot of those tweets and didn’t agree with it. I actually do like what they’re doing. I’ve never had a problem with PWI bands playing HBCU style music because we also play their music. USC has actually been one of the few PWI band programs I liked because they have a very entertaining semi-HBCU style. I was a just little annoyed with the fact that media platforms are acting like this is this new incredible thing. Once you connected the dots, with the whole black twitter backlash, it made a little more sense

    • @jacklyneverage3881
      @jacklyneverage3881 Год назад

      @@travismaurice6308 Yes, HBCU's do play some of their music, but we don't totally and completely imitate them nor try to do everything they do. We know with white america, they will go to the extreme with it with the replacement effort, the stealing effort, and the profiting from it effort. It's not enough for them to simply engage every once in a while into our culture, they have to take over and dominate and profit. This simply opens a doorway to the culture vulture of the dominant society where the only space where black women can be viewed as beautiful, athletic, creative, desirable and the center of attention will be over run by white women while black young ladies will get pushed out the way and overshadowed by all the white women who would want to take this over. Lort forbid that black women be the desirable faces of a pwi school in any capacity. They ain't having that. So, not really liking this at all.

    • @billjohnson113
      @billjohnson113 10 месяцев назад +1

      @travismaurice6308 You've got a point, that is kinda messed up how the HBCU dance lines that really created this whole style aren't getting the recognition they deserve. Like the video said, majorette dancing really started at the black colleges but it seems like most people don't know that history. And those original teams are the ones that should be shown off in all the magazines and videos, not just the newer groups doing the moves they pioneered. It ain't fair how the mainstream media seems to ignore where it all began at the HBCUs. Those women in the Cardinal Divas put in the work to develop majorette dancing into a real art form and sport but they aren't the ones celebrated. The history books should tell the story from the start and give those early teams their props. Hopefully more vids like this one can help spread the word about where the style really came from.
      That's a very good point. There seems to be an imbalance in media attention and acknowledgement of the origins and roots of this competitive style of majorette dance. A few thoughts on why the pioneering HBCU dance lines may not be receiving as much coverage:
      - Limited resources/budgets - HBCUs often have less funding for promotion of their programs compared to larger predominantly white colleges.
      - Cultural appropriation - As the style spread and evolved at other schools, the racialized origins within black college culture may have gotten obscured or whitewashed over time.
      - Commercialization - The competitive dance circuits and showcase events likely focus more on prominent majority white teams that can draw larger audiences/viewers.
      - Nostalgia factor - HBCU bands/dance lines hold nostalgic tradition, but that history may not seem as "exciting" or flashy to media compared to error competitive scenes.
      - Access/representation - Black innovators throughout history often go unsung due challenges in having their work elevated and distributed through traditional media pipelines.
      - Lack of advocacy - More collective effort may be needed from HBCU communities, historians and culture bearers to consistently push for shining light on these pioneering programs and their importance.
      Bringing greater and more equitable awareness and recognition to the foundational roots and lasting impact of HBCU dance lines seems very warranted.

U can't wait to see the outfits, the beauty, the dance moves. The ladies are an integral part of the experience and show. I didn't feel that way with this group as if the band nor fans knew they would even gonna be there.

      You make an excellent observation about an important difference in how HBCU majorette teams are integrated versus what was shown in the video. Specifically:
      - HBCU majorettes are fully embedded as a vibrant part of the overall band experience, performance, and halftime show. Fans anticipate and enjoy their synchronized routines.
      - Their intricate dances are precisely coordinated with the music/moves of the band as a cohesive unit. It's a collective representation of the school spirit.
      - The uniforms, presentations are all elements fans anticipate and admire as integral to the overall HBCU band tradition.
      - This group in the video did not seem as naturally intertwined with any band. Their performance appeared more isolated or secondary.
      - Without that seamless integration, sense of shared representation of a school/team, it does not capture the same cultural spirit imbued in HBCU majorette traditions.
      You're exactly right that a critical part of what makes HBCU majorette performances so special is how perfectly they blend dance, band maneuvers and school pride together in a highly anticipated part of the game day experience. The video did not illustrate that same level of synergy. Thanks for that insightful observation!

      But thats exactly the point. This is being spotlighted because it’s in a place where it’s out of it’s element. Majorettes at HBCUs are nothing special in that space. They’ve been doing it for decades. Also, because Jennifer has a new show, the producers are definitely going to be booking the hot topics. If you want to blame anyone, blame the generation that created validity off of “likes.” These young ladies got the likes and they got booked. At this point, after reading these comments, they ARE NOT going to invite an HBCU majorette team because the ones that have comments ARE NOT being positive about it. A little EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE goes a long way. Respectfully….

If they were out performing the teams at any HBCU it would be ok, but are not. They are not getting praised for the quality of the talent or performance but who they are performing for which is white people. I tire of black people placing importance on the opinion of white people. All J hud did was say, "We made it because white people finally accepted us!" Your opinion is valid to you from your perspective.

The women from HBCU arent upset they are dancing, they take it as a slap in the face. That's the lure, the mystique, and the draw to HBCU's. The Black experience including our traditions. I totally and completely understand this young lady wanting to create a lane or a space for young black and other women of color like herself to feel some level of cultural comfort while she thinks she is bringing diversity and promoting multi culturalism in a "white space". Sharing the beauty of a long and strong cultural tradition with everyone. But, how often does this happen only for it to be stolen and taken from us where those of the dominant society find a way to exploit and make a profit and do a take over where it will no longer be young black women doing this at pwis but white young women as the new face of this tradition, and us being bumped out as young black women again that was "our space". One of the few spaces wear young black women are allowed to be sensual, graceful, beautiful, desirable, feminine, created, and praised for their unique beauty and talents without being compared and over shadowed by white women. This is just not a good move and I can see the b.s coming down the line where young white women will want to join and be the face of this and completely over shadow young black women in a lane that was meant for them to shine in a world where we are still judged as not being feminine or beautiful enough as women.

And then claimed they never saw majorettes at PWI when it’s a FUCKING PWI. Of course there isn’t going to be a majorette team. If you wanted to join one, you should’ve went to an HBCU. Then they only mentioned hbcu like twice and everything else was mainly about them applauding then from stripping hbcu culture from hbcu. Give it a year or 2 and we’ll see white girls on that team because we can’t discriminate on their schools campus. Sharing those routines with each other until eventually every pwi is doing it. At that point the history and the dances themselves have no meaning because no hbcu majorette will benefit from this

As the said, they are at a PWI (predominantly white institute) that didn't have this type of dance team. Just celebrate and congratulate them on what they've accomplished and not criticize JHUD for shining a light on it. HBCU's are the originators, this opens this dance style to a larger audience.

    Hey all, can someone explain to me the difference between this type of Majorette vs the European version? I am Dutch and from my understanding this was invented in Germany and The Netherlands. Thought this dance type seems to be quite different from what the Majorette's do there.

    • @billjohnson113
      @billjohnson113 10 месяцев назад

      Here's a general overview of some key differences between the American style of majorette dancing versus the traditional European/Dutch style based on our previous discussion:
      American Style:
      - More choreography and emphasis on dance skills/tricks like leaps, turns, kicks, complex baton routines
      - Often performed as part of color guard/marching band for sports entertainment
      - Costumes tend to be short, form-fitting dresses or skirts
      - Rooted in HBCU bands but more competitive focus today
      European/Dutch Style:
      - Centered more around synchronized marching/formations withsignals/gestures
      - Performed to military-style music as part of marching bands
      - Main role is leading parades dressed in traditional uniforms
      - Baton skills present but not the primary focus
      - More about representing community pride than competition
      So in summary - the American style incorporates more dance elements and complex baton work for performance aspects, while the European roots have a stronger emphasis on structured marching routines and representing towns/bands through leadership roles in parades. Both styles have evolved over time as the traditions spread to new regions as well. The video content focused only on American HBCU majorettes but not differences versus European traditions. Let me know if any part of the comparison needs more clarification!

    • @ktlg1423
      @ktlg1423 10 месяцев назад +2

      That is considered more as the "traditional" style of majorette and is done in a couple parts of the US. However, this type of majorette incorporates more dance (usually without batons) and comes from black Americans (HBCUs). Their style of marching band is also different. If you want to see an example of it, you can find videos of Southern University's performances.

While that is higher than international students (25.4%), Latino students (14.6 %), Black students (6 )%, and Asian students (16.9%), it isn't even close to a majority, and "majority white" is what people mean when they say PWI. If you walked across McCarthy quad at SC, 7 of every 10 students you passed would be people of color. USC is of course historically a PWI.

    • @jacklyneverage3881
      @jacklyneverage3881 Год назад +1

      The point is, it's not a majority black institution. HBCU majorette dancing wasn't started by people of color, it was started by Black folks. Let's stop including people of color as if we all fall in the same category when we don't. It's not part of Latino, Asian, nor International students of color history. This tradition is specific and unique to Black American history at hbcus founded specifically and only for us. So, yeah, this opens a dangerous pathway for black women to be eventually excluded and replaced by white women and others who approximate whiteness to be the faces of those majorette teams at pwi institutions. This is not a win for black folks nor black women but a pitfall.

    Also, these young women don't have the dress or the moves down very well. They haven't even created a signature step or dance. They all seem very new to this and very off sync with each other and some of the moves aren't smooth and straight odd. In addition, the costumes are not in alignment of what a traditional HBCU majorette dance team would wear at all. It screams "Hooters" or a sexy sports bar waitress outfits vs. the well designed and put together outfits of hbcu dance team outfits. It's a bit more thought in what HBCU's dance teams wear. What makes HBCU dance teams and bands special and unique is that it is uniquely our tradition that you don't see at pwi schools.
