    This video was a godsend!! I decided to change my clutch on my mk 4 1.6 2001 after putting it off for almost a year. I have no experience with cars whatsoever, but this video helped me through it step by step and was super helpful. thanks again legend!!

    I changed my clutch following your video. Good stuff ! Just want to add something because I was alone most of the time. So it really helps if you lower the engine (at the gearbox side) once the gearbox is detached from its mounting. I cant say how much it should be lowered. Very carefully and when hear a slight crackle then stop (about 150mm). When you detach the gearbox from the engine body , you need to swing the differential anticlockwise about 90 degrees (till stands upwards) . I suggest doing the same thing when fitting it back. Also prior assembly I pushed the engine slightly towards the other mounting (on the other side of the engine) and lay it on a axle stand so it does not come backwards. A few centimeters of more freedom really helps.

    Tackled my clutch and flywheel swap at the weekend. This video and part two are were my reference guide.
    Hardest part was navigating the O/S driveshaft flange over and round the flywheel/metal gasket.
    All works as it should do.
    Thanks for the vid!

    thanks man. definitely help me 100% on mine. i was completely oblivious on what to do. my flywheel was offset with the bolts and had to cut out the flywheel plate to get to the bolts. i also found it easier to get the transmission removed from the top. on my tdi there was a bracket i was able to use as a handle and twisted it as you mentioned. cheers!

    This video gave me a good idea of the job and I did it within two days on my 1.6sr.
    The transmission removal was indeed the hardest part, I've found that the lefthandside axle flange keeps getting caught on the engine.
    With some persquation it'll get past though.

It would probably be easier to do the turbo with the transmission out of the car. I just don't know if I have the physical stamina it takes to complete this job. No joke about having help with a gearbox. The last clutch I replaced myself was decades ago, on a Ford Escort, rear-wheel drive. On the road outside my house. Unlike this, there wasn't a dozen things to remove for access. Unbolt the drive shaft, undo the clutch housing and pull back the gearbox. Which, in my case was too heavy for me on my back, and it dropped, crushing a finger on the road, needing a hospital trip and five stitches to sew up a burst digit.
    Now, any job that really needs a proper lift, I leave to my local garage. Anything else, I'm fine with.

    I got a 1999 VW Passat 1.8L turbo needed a clutch, my mechanic got the clutch put back in but ran into an issue it won't start/or turn over. Any ideas what it could be? He said he unplugged 2 cables. Could it have ruined the starter? Or could it be the security inside the car that won't let it start? Please let me know what you think

  • @mkdfineful
    @mkdfineful 5 лет назад

    Nice guys and nice video, but bad advice regarding dropping the transmission out without first removing the sub-frame. Seriously, the transmission has to be pulled straight back off the engine at least 4 inches before it can be lowered, at which time its axle flange and then the trans. case bolts bind up on the sub-frame. I could have removed the sub-frame four times in the time it took to fight the transmission around the sub-frame.

I know you can't diagnose over the net but your opinion would be really helpful hopefully.

      What I have shown is the hard part, which is removal of the gearbox. To change the flywheel is just 6 bolts, on a off procedure. With filming, dead batteries etc, it took me about 8hrs. But to do the job without that, i would say its about a 4hr job doing it on the floor like me. It would be quicker if you had all ramps and all of that stuff.

    I had my gearbox removed a year or so ago for a clutch replacement and they said the mount was almost too worn to reuse. This is on a 02M gearbox, TDI 150. I guess they are talking about the aluminium bit between the mount and the gearbox, that the big bolts go into - looks like the bit on the engine mount that also likes to strip its threads. Need gearbox off again so could do with knowing what to get hold of. The mount itself doesn't have any threads in it, right?
