@@magzire Just the slightly older CPUs, especially in Xeon and higher end desktop CPUs. GRC has a tool that is called InSpectre that will tell you if it is affecting your CPU you can download for free and do a partial disable.
In short some years back CPUs started using code to make educated guesses at what would be executed on it next, and would preload some of them and if it was right it would execute that saving allot of time by being more efficient. AMD and Intel both did it, but Intel was more aggressive with it.
Then some smart security researches after coming up with some impressive RAM security hacks, wondered if they could do similar stuff with Speculative Execution and called it Spectre, and that lead to another weakness, and another and another going back for the better part of a decade. AMD was affected by some of the first stuff, but much of the later stuff depended on Intel's more aggressive versions of it that AMD didn't use.
The only fix was to turn it off, so the tech making the chips fast and powerful was gutted. Game servers all over the place that were "good enough" suddenly were staining. In some rare cases certain game servers lost over 45% or their performance overnight.
The good thing is that there has been no uses of these exploits showing up in the wild and as of now, all of them require hardware access to the computer to use it. In most cases if you turn it off you will be fine. Also allot of the performance issues with server software was fixed by tweaking the software, but there is still almost an average of 20% performance hit compared to before.
I have the patches on my AMD CPU disabled, but only see a small difference, your results may vary.

Thanks for this video, and it started a nice experiment for me. I built this system for USD 190 (4 components) with e5-2689 on a X79 machinist (incl nvme slot) and a 6-copper-heatpipe CPU cooler and 4x8GB ecc ram in quad channel @3200 MT/s. The whole draws 350W through a platinum PSU and performs worse than AMD 1700. The latter costs twice the money but draws only half the power and has no risks of outdated drivers. I suppose moving towards AMD ryzen 1700 or 2600 is a better idea in ANY case.

I sold my loaded $1100 Ryzen 1700X / RX580 system for $1200 about 2 years ago. Jumped on ebay snagged HP Z420 workstation with Xeon 1650v2 6 core 12 thread, 32gb ddr3 1866 quad channel and no hhd or grphics card for $200. I got a 250gb Samsung 860EVO ssd for $60 and added my 2x 3tb NAS drives. Then recently added a XFX 5600xt $300. So for roughly $550 I got a machine that can do light video editing, handle multitasking, game 1080p ultra and 4k medium settings. I run the CPU stock 99% of the time but if I want can I use Intel XTU and Throttle Stop to push all 6 cores to 4.4ghz and then I think its close to Ryzen 2600x performance. Either way this PC seems just as fast at half the price. I bring this up because Linus just did a video on it. I didn't care the Z420 doesn't support m.2 because even though its faster in the benches in real time use most people will not notice the slight speed boost. Samsung ssd in rapid mode is plenty fast. MY budget advice find a xeon v2 workstation dell, hp, lenovo, for cheap slap a few parts in it, your good to go. I've built tons of computers since 1999 and recently just got tired of all the LED RGB blaa blaa and just wanted something cheap, fast and solid. These workstations are made to run 25/8 and built like tanks.

@@nostrahazer8970 Ghostbusters Remix. Just because the artist may have the permissions to make and release the music does not mean that people on RUclips have the right to use it.
For example Tipster on his channel used a remix with direct permission from the artist that used several samples, but the song had Nate Dogg saying "Hold Up" that was recognizable as him. Tipster used the music as his Intro, and therefore they copyright claimed almost every video he did for years and he had to go back and cut it out and get a new theme. The other option they had was to Copyright Strike his channel and by the third video he would have to appeal or lose his channel and right to own one on RUclips period. By Copyright Claiming they could take any undelivered proceeds from those videos and any future proceeds unless he removed the video.
In this case if claimed TYC may have a chance to appeal it though as he could say the work was being used in parody/satire of eliminating the protections against Spectre and Meltdown with the lyrics "I aint afraid of no ghosts", but it would be an opinion thing on RUclips's part.

Newsflash, avg joes or ordinary users do not need to fear those security issues as they are vulnerable for so much more crap out there like scripts and so on through web browsers that the spectre/meltdown issues are not a real issue as they are more of a security issue for companies to worry about.

I barely see anyone selling their 1700 lower than $200, even if its value is around a little higher than an FX 8 now

I had an old AMD APU and needed an upgrade, but upgrading to a Ryzen was expensive for me because I needed to buy motherboard and ram along with the new processor. I went instead for a combo of one of this chinese motherboards with a E5-2689 with 32 GB of ram, ended up spending less than 180 USD and got a nice upgrade. Running smooth for 2 months now.

No its not better than 3rd gen ryzen, not even better than 2nd gen ryzen but yes it is a better value. However keep in mind this test is GPU bottlenecked since he tested with RX 5700XT at very high or ultra setting, if he use 2080 TI or above then the difference will be massive, and the worst thing is you will be locked on that old platform.

It's more likely to be from the IPC difference. RAM speed really has little effect in gaming, and X79 has a lot more bandwidth to play with.

Another conclusion - the 5700xt clearly bottlenecks the 9900k. But again, why would someone, investing in a 9900k, would pair it with a 5700xt?

For CPU intensive tasks, and to also play games.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 5 лет назад

@@ByGraceThroughFaith777 Also not sure I'd call it "investing" when for the same or less money one can get 4 more cores and 8 more threads from AMD with basically the same IPC, without the need for lunatic cooling to extract the potential performance. For any given real world typical gaming budget, the 9900K makes little sense; buy something cheaper, use the cost difference to get a better GPU, used or otherwise.
Also, how exactly is the XT "bottlenecking" the 9900K? That's the wrong way round to think about a gaming task as it implies the CPU should be showing greater usage than it is, which isn't true. One primarily cares about getting the most out of the GPU, ie. for a *game*, all that matters is whether the GPU is going as fast as it can (for benchmarking anyway; for real play it's whether it's going as fast as we need it to), and what this shows is that one just doesn't need (indeed one shouldn't need) a top-end CPU to game well.
For a modern game using today's APIs, one ought to be very concerned if a CPU like the 9900K is being pushed flat out, because such behaviour would imply a very poorly coded game. A powerful CPU running with high usage for a modern game is not a +ve thing. Where that performance headroom comes in far more useful is coping with the fact that real world systems don't just game; people stream, record, encode, have other stuff going on in the background like AV checks, they're running Windows setups that are old and a bit degraded, etc. GN showed this when they compared Ryzen 1700 to a 7700K for game streaming way back and they were only testing with clean builds.

@@mapesdhs597 a CPU with so many threads is never at 100% because no game uses all threads at once. To truly see the pure gaming performance of the Xeon and the 9900k, one has to eliminate the GPU bottleneck and use a 2080Ti. I am sure that if both CPUs were tested with a 2080Ti, the 9900k would be far ahead the Xeon.
In any case, I fully see the point behind the video and I am sure that this is valid for many. however, I doubt that someone on such a strict budget to consider investing in an x75 platform in 2019, would buy a $400 GPU. They would probably look for a 900 series or at best, a 580.

another point - I also don't think it's wise to disable the fixes for spectre etc - especially since most users getting a xeon would have productivity in mind. And not disabling them would bring in the 'slugitis' back :)

Waiting on everything to arrive. Total build cost will be around $130 for my rig and it will be a major upgrade to my current setup. I'm used to playing games with 30-40FPS lol
