Fallout 4 Graygarden Settlement Tour - NO BUILDING MODS

- Graygarden is an unusual building experience that allows you to build on the ground an on an overpass. This was my first attempt at a settlement at this unique location (it's run by robots!). This build was done on a Playstation 5 using the "Fallout 4: Game of the Year" edition with no building mods. I do however have Creation Club skins installed for Power Armor, Clothing and Weapons.
You can read my blog and see a gallery with dozens of images of this settlement here: www.wonkosgeekery.com/blog/fa...
A majority of the music in this video was composed by my friend Pete Billingham. He is open for commissions so if you are interested, reach out to him at his web site here: portfolio.studio-draven.com/

Can’t believe this is done without mods, fantastic work!
Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
I literally stopped playing Fallout and was consumed by this video. Very well done. You must have the patience of a saint to get EVERY item to sit right in the shelves. Again, well done. Thank you for the video
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! It does take quite a bit of patience. the worst is when I arrange things on a table or something and accidentally knock stuff over so I have to redo it. :D
Your builds are absolutely phenomenal!! I’ve played Fallout for years, yet somehow you’ve just recently popped up in my algorithm. I wish I knew your channel sooner. I’m a notorious box builder and have such a hard time coming up with creative ideas. You sir, are the crème de la crème. Definitely top tier elite.
P.S. I believe Eric Idle would be proud of that store name 😉
Thank you so much for watching! I consider myself a "mid-level" builder. There are some guys out there that exceed my skills by a mile, but I appreciate the kind words. :)
i love the funny little names of all your shops and stuff
It's one of the silly things I throw in to lighten up an otherwise scary Wasteland! :)
Well done! Graygarden had always been a conundrum for me, I have since embraced it and made myself think outside the box, thanks to watching "The Skooled Zone" I have used the lower level, by placing a few busses for living quarters. I've tried to keep it simple in order to avoid the build limit. I really enjoyed this.
The Skooled Zone was my very first exposure to building better and I'm so glad Paul has that series. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Simple way to reduce the build limit, any weapons / armour / junk you can drop in the settlement area then go into the workshop and scrap each item. Weapons reduce the build meter the most, I scrap the worst weapons like pipe ones. Also to carry more, instead of trading with your companion, command them to pick something up
2:33 I’m going to use that part in my build. 4:16 For people that don’t like mods, this we use CWSS and CW see you sleep mod. Npc will use the bath and take showers. Yes even Preston will take a shower
i wish i had the commitment for this kinda thing, this is an amazing build. The fact that this doesnt even have 50 likes is insane, good job
I'm just weirdly obsessive about some things. :D Thank you for such a kind compliment. I like to think of the 700ish views so far most people who watched it enjoyed the experience. :)
Ive watched this before but algorythm suggested it again havent played the game in ages but here i am watching it again 😂
Love the feel of the settlements scrappy builds are best never pulled it off as well as you
Globe lights on the tent, haven't seen that before.
The corner shack piece next to the outhouse is yet another new one. May have to liberate that idea. 😏
Leaving the junk by the work bench is a good thing. Its nice to have decorations that stay put without melting through something.
Bread Zeppelin. 🤣
All hail the fire / pillar glitch. It's place anywhere (almost) for vanilla.
Bonus points for going through the trouble to hand place items. Such a hassle but worth it. 👍
That outhouse sink hut does look good.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Steal away, I know I've stolen every idea that isn't nailed down from other builders. :D
I been craving fallout 4 tour settlement tours since forever!
Glad you found my builds! I hope you've been enjoying them. :)
1:22, I’m 100% going to steal this idea for my shops
Do it! :D
Thats a pretty damn amazing build. The amount of decorating that went into this..., and great layout. Nice use of the overpass, I used to do stuff up on them but have been ignoring them lately. What really drew my attention was the area for the caravan traders. Love that. Intigrating the movements of those npc groups really brings a living feel to the whole that's great for the alive, in-game feel. Good stuff here, respect.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! The Caravan Trader part is always one of my favorite bits to do at a settlement. It's just so "alive"! :)
This looks amazing! I'm new to settlement building. This helps to show what is possible. Thanks for all of the ideas
I found your channel two days ago. Fantastic job.
Thank you very much! :)
Nice job managing all this without mods, but i always wondered, if you are going to go through the struggle of glitching walls and items using rugs and pillars, you might as well install Place Everywhere mod and achieve the same effect without all the hustle. But if you wanna remain pure and vanilla, I can respect that.
It's all part of the challenge, not just in finding workarounds and glitches but also in creative thinking for me. :)
So cool. I subbed to this guy yesterday and I randomly found another video of his that I love.
Glad you enjoy! I have a bunch of settlement videos up and I hope you enjoy them!
Ah, Bread Zeppelin. The Commonwealth's greatest baked goods restaurant. Notable figures in the company's founding and continued success include Jimmy Cottage, John 'Pumpernickel' Jones, Robert Pastry, and John Banh Mi.
The place has so many different options, like Good Thyme Bad Thyme, Kamir, D'Yer Matzah, and Fool Without Pain. This doesn't even cover half of it.
Well that's roughly 15 minutes of my life 'wasted' making bread puns.
It was the best of thymes, it was the worst of thymes in the Wasteland! :D
Just getting into building in fo4 first time play through your vids helping me a lot !
I'm glad! I hope you have been enjoying the game. :)
Your videos are so inspiring and oddly therapeutic! I wouldn't mind living in your settlements. Wonderful job!
Thank you Emily! Much appreciated. :)
i love how you can access the highway through staircases
Wow, you're so creative! Love this build, thanks for sharing!
Bro , just found your page . You doknow this is amazing work . It's 2023 nd I'm playing through again and it's because I was watching your videos and wanted to do some similar builds
Thank you for watching and the kind comments! I just started a new play through too so I'm right there with you. :)
Stunning. 👏👏👏
Now I’m off to find out what the campfire pillar glitch does and how to utilise it 😊
Check out The Insane Shecklador and Sardeliac's no-mod builds. That's where I learned. :)
@@BWTF_Ben thank you. 🙏🏽
Very well done. Much thought and execution of ideas.
Thank you kindly! Really appreciate you watching and commenting.
This is fantastic, really creative. Good work
Thank you, Leon! :)
🤩 Your loving attention to detail is so incredibly inspiring! Your builds always leave me mesmerized. Aside from just the sheer brilliance of the design of the build itself, it looks so lived in and real, with every comfort and necessity tended to perfectly. A special award goes to your infinite patience in putting all the items on shelves, tables, etc. I wholeheartedly admire whatever Zen state of mind you are able to get yourself into to get all that done. Stunning work my friend! ✨👍✨🤗
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I try to think about people living there for real and what they'd need and that helps guide the build. And yeah, junk placement is sometimes the main thing that makes me want to use mods in the future! :D
How do you prevent items from falling off of shelves or being thrown around when the settlement gets attacked!?! Or when settlers just walk into stuff!?! One grenade & all my stuff goes flying! Great vids, I love them all! You have real talent & a great eye for all of the detail you put into your settlement builds!
@@BorgWolf359 unfortunately that can't really be prevented. What you see in these videos is usually recorded right after I finish decorating. Usually (in game time) when I visit weeks later stuff is all over the place or has fallen through the floor. :(
Awesome build
Thank you! :D
I love your builds and the layouts of your buildings. The placements of furniture and all the items are spot on. Some day I dream of a PS5. I have a PS4 for now.
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words!
Excellent build! Love the floor patching!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
curie , codsworth , ada and that robobrain became residents of graygarden
This is amazing. Fantastic build. New subscriber.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching and commenting. :)
I love how you turned this area ♥️
Nice soundtrack
Love your stuff. Watch these and Fiddleflaps videos...pretty awesome stuff! Though, to be honest, I insist on using mods (PlaceEverywhere, Scrap Everything, etc.). Hate fiddling around with the concrete-post method.
I used the idea for the stairs you had in the Finch Farm build, and put a modified version of them up where you have your elevator. And I also have a set of stairs that goes to the first overpass level. Will stick my Generators on that level , I think.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it. :) And mods are definitely the norm. I've very aware that I'm going against that norm in my work. I hope however that makes it special in some way!
@@BWTF_Ben Oh, it does. Reminds me of how I used to build settlements and the clever tricks I used to have to use. Brilliant work. Am spoiled with mods, though, so would be hard to go back to vanilla. Really love how and what you do!
Great work!
Thank you kindly!
0:50 Good looking lookout tower.
2:20 The small Quantums from the Federal Ration Stockpile?
3:15 I never thought to add plants in here with the decorative potted ones. Thanks.
6:20 This is probably the most fitting settlement for a robot workbench, besides the Mechanist's Lair. The Mr Handy box and parts make it a natural.
9:42 I'm guessing that floor was put on top out of necessity to cover a hole. It actually adds some character sitting up like that. Happy accident?
10:18 I hope that desktop picture was already blank when you looted it. It's a shame to lose their pictures by not carrying them out in front of your character.
10:56 Great defensive position.
14:04 Hmmm... the elevator passing through that wire kinda makes me want to set something up so the power would actually cut out when that happened.
15:51 I'm pretty sure I've mentioned it before but firing in those small floor plywood bits, or table tops, always helps with the scrappy vibe when using foundations. Looking good!
28:56 Good lookin night view here.
Nice job on this one. My only real nitpick would be the line of turrets on the greenhouse. I don't even think Diamond City has that many turrets in total let alone all lined up like that. That's probably just me though. I tend to keep minimal visible defenses. A lot of times I'll sink turrets underground to get the number up without having to look at them.
Thanks for dropping by and commenting as always! To your questions/comments:
Yep, those are the small Quantums. I went there especially to get them.
I love those Mr. Handy boxes. I wish they were in the non-modded build menus.
You guessed right about the wood. I tried to glitch them in but they wouldn't go down further than that. I decided it was kind of neat as it created an "elevated" dining area. :)
That desktop pic was already blank. I tried to loot nearby areas for one with a pic but couldn't find one I could carry back.
Re: the elevator, in the past I used the Wifi glitch on it, but I guess I got it in my head that it could destabilize a settlement so I've tried to avoid it. That may just be Sar's voice in my head. :)
Doing the floor/panel/patching thing was entirely your comment ringing in my head from my Taffington Build. :) You were absolutely right that the Shack Foundations need additional patterns on them and these did the trick! I love the idea of using tables. I'll try that next build.
You're not wrong about the turrets. After I rewatched the video I thought "That's a bit much." but for some reason when I was building it I didn't mind them as much. Funny how our views change as we look back on a settlement vs when we're building, yeah?
@@BWTF_Ben AFAIK those are the only bottles that can fit on the upper shelf.
I use tim-timmans invisible wire glitch for my vid. It's temporary and not permanent like the wifi glitch. I don't really know how buggy the wifi is but I've heard a lot of people warn about it. Of course in a game like this there are so many bugs it's hard to ever really know what caused the game to crash.
I like using the desk with the more orangey (is that even a word?) tone of brown sometimes, the tops of bookshelves, picnic tables, the diamond plate metal table, and anything else I can find.......oh ya cages can work well too like I did in my Easy City build.
I'm the same way. Always looking back at things I would do differently in hindsight.
Any thoughts on your next build location?
Dude, this is cool!!!
Thank you! Much appreciated!
I with there were buildable showers! There are plenty in the game, and a privacy curtain in the atom cat garage that would be great
Fantastic biuld. Love the addition of the Junkion name and used it appropriately so. You should try your hand at building fortress maximus or Metroplex in F4 :)
Thank you for watching and commenting! Man, that actually sounds like a cool idea but I'd probably need a powerful PC and a bunch of mods to make that happen. :D
@@BWTF_Ben Well, it could be more evocative or suggestive than anything, same basic look for the city-modes, etc, using the vanilla resources as best as possible, a sort of challenge.to yourself to see what they would look like after the fallout, and with humanity now living and repairing them as best as they can. Or perhaps the ark, or axalon.
Looks great
Thank you kindly!
I could’ve sworn this video was reupload until I realized this is GreyGarden and not Finch Farm! Which bridge was easier for you to work with in your opinion? Interesting thought about the greenhouse being unscrappable and having to work with it; for me I love working with prexistjng buildings because it speeds up the building process, helps with performance, and feels more natural. Then again some buildings in many locations are straight up too broken to work with or doesn’t fit the theme.
Many people may not like it, but I love the look of the factory being sunk to the point the grass has invaded half the floor, makes for a well integrated look. I recommend equipping settlers who are assigned a scavenging station a wrench, makes it seem like they are wandering around looking for stuff to fix. Also for the wandering caravans, have you thought of using intimidation perk to dress them up? For me I gave each guard a suit with a pack mask (IE elephant with grey suit, Bosco head with yellow Trench coat). I know you redressed the Nuka World Market so I thought that might also be a fun little project. Speaking of NPC movements have you done a supply line between GG and Oberland Station? They are very close to each other and it’s always nice to see the provisioner using the train tracks in the distance. If I recall the worker robots can run supply lines (and in turn be moved to any settlement).
As for the bridge section, just wow. The supporting planks of the junk fences lined up against the natural concrete highway barrier is a nice visual touch. The store names are quite punny as usual.
I’ll have to check back at your Finch Farm build but I think you may have outdone yourself Ben 😎
Nice idea on the caravan guards.
I preferred Finch Farm's overpass. More space and most stuff was scrappable. I normally wouldn't mind building on top of the greenhouse. I almost did but then realized that would defeat the whole purpose of it being a greenhouse. :D Some pre-established structures bum me out (given I'm not using mods) like Croup Manor.
Do the Caravan guards actually maintain the outfits? I notice they change outfits every time they visit.
My supply lines are all run by robots, centralized out of Croup Manor (which I just use as my "home base" since I can't really build there the way I'd like to without mods). So technically GG and Oberland are "linked". Maybe I'll create a provisioner there when I build just for the animation. :)
The supporting plank thing worked out nicely. I actually didn't even think of it til the moment I was glitching in the fences! :D
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Really appreciate it! :)
@@BWTF_Ben The caravan guards have kept their outfits on since I've put them on a while back. I noticed you have them in your builds very often so I thought it could be a nice touch
@@orangesqueasy Definitely something to consider! I'm going to think a bit on what outfits to give them. :)
I wish I could be this creative, I just do the same walled town idea, use the concrete walls around the settlement 😂. My graygarden I have kept just for robots as robot settler's reduce the overall happiness
dude, so much patience
Thank you for watching! :). It does take a lot of time.
Amazing! How did you snap walls around the workbench? O just can't figure It!
Thanks for watching and commenting! I created the floors first around that area (mostly just a lot of careful snapping) and the walls then snapped together. :)
This is amazing. Extremely creative.
I’ve had issues with the elevator buttons floating away and then I have to store and place the elevator again, has this happened to you at all?
That is definitely something I have encountered before. My understanding is the best way to keep it from happening is to always make sure your elevators are at the ground level before you Fast Travel away. That way when the settlement is reloaded they will reform "in place".
Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
That is true. Another fix I found is to put a rooftop from the "Store House" assets on it. Build some store house walls around the elevator and then you can place a rooftop of your choice on the very top of it.
Grand Stuff.
Thank you! 😊
Wow, how pro ediiton~ Benson. 🤚
Thank you for watching and the kind words. :)
My only negative point, please inform us your builds are after completion of your game because I cannot get much of what you display & I am level 29 & use the creation club. I do not & will never use cheats & mods.
I like your videos, & the music to this video is just heavenly. I Lourve it.
Totally understandable. I will try to remember this for my next video.
This is a phenomenal build that inspires me to try harder (I get much too into simplicity & uniformity, basically doing FEMA style triage & disaster builds) but yours have so many wonderful aesthetic touches. How do you find time to do all these little touches when every 10 minutes one of the other settlements needs something? I also run it on a PS5, do you find the game struggles / becomes buggy because ofhow expansive your settlements are?
Thank you for watching and your kind comments. Everyone's style is different. Much of my style was inspired by the builder Sardeliac who used to do live streams building in the "scrappy" style.
Most of my building happened after I defeated the Institute, so the settlement attacks are a lot less frequent then they were earlier in the game. I've gone hours of building without attacks. :)
I typically go about 3 size bars worth of building before the framerates really freak out. I won't lie, in some cases I have broken settlements because of this. For instance, I can't even go to Jamaica Plain without it crashing 4 out of 5 times!
Aren't all the items you place over the furnitare falling off into the ground? For what i understand, there is a glitch, or more to say, a bad loading sistem, that makes the items load first when you aproache a settlement and THEN the furniture loads after it, thus making the items fall.
The settlement you made it's just awesome. You have a very good eye for building.
PS: english is not my main lenguage, so i apologice for my grammatics.
You're absolutely right. In time, settlers knock things over, attacks send objects flying etc. What you see here is an ideal of sorts. I always decorate and then start taking screenshots and filming right away. There are mods out there that "permanently" place objects, but since I'm doing no mod builds I don't have access to them.
I like your build! Its very atmotpheric
By the way, Where this coulorfull bulb lights are located in workshop?
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. The Cycling Lights are under Workshop>Power>Miscellaneous>Cycling Light
omg your works is wow i even tried copy some building and failure
It takes practice for sure. My first six or seven settlement builds were very rudimentary.
the infamous black face bug...
Another superb settlement build there Benson. :) Curious tho, How's your FPS since you put so many details in large and small.
Thanks Chuck! I'll tell you, some of the settlements that ran *terribly* on my PS4 are MUCH smoother on the PS5! They are still prone to crashing, but in terms of actual video and camera movements it's SO much better. :D
@@BWTF_Ben Always nice to see a big change for the positive when you upgrade. !!
Most settlements have attacks spawn dead center, bypassing all your defenses. All the placed items turns into a whirlwind when Dogmeat come tearing through lol
For my reference I used Oxhorn's attack spawn point video. I believe he used console commands to find them. So far they've panned out. :)
@@BWTF_Ben impressive without mods. I couldn't do it without place anywhere mod. Would spike my anxiety trying to place shit everywhere lmfao. There's a few cool mods that would make this place even better. Like the usable toilets and sinks CWSS or something. NPCs will use them. And sim settlements using those shops will bring visitors too.
It’s absolutely infuriating they do that! Bethesda really need to fix that when they release the next gen update, just make invaders spawn outside the settlement and have to actually get past your defences…instead of teleporting 10 supermutants directly into the centre of my settlement!
А как сделать военные ограждения которые у братства или на блокпостах старых?
Amazing build. I can't figure out how you connected the two elevators to get up to the top. I have tried building up beside the first elevator but the second one won't sit on top. I would love t know how you did this without using a glitch. Thanks.
It's been a minute since I did that built but IIRC I started by building from the top of the overpass down, and having the elevator snapping to the various warehouse pieces was key. I'd have to try to do it again to fully remember. :) Thank you so much for watching and the kind comment.
I have to ask, where did you get your planters from? Creation Club? love your build
The potted plants come from getting the Picket Fences magazine. Details here: fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Potted_plant
@@BWTF_Ben no no, lol the planters in the greenhouse. I think I have 'em. Yours is just cleaner. LOL
@@sherrybreker2143 Oh, those! If you mean the reddish brown ones those should already be at the settlement when you arrive. :)
I'm just curious as to why you aren't choosing to use "Place Everywhere" as it doesn't really take away from the term of using no mods, It doesn't take away from the vanilla aspect either.
"Place Anywere" (AFAIK) is a Mod. I wouldn't be true to the spirit of a "No Mods" build if I used it. Part of the challenge is having to use tricks like the rug glitch and pillar glitch etc. and I enjoy the challenge. :)
@@BWTF_Ben Ok I see, myself I like making spiral stair cases using the 1/4 size wooden floor pieces and with PA it allows for that, now if you could do that with a glitch that'd I'd like to see and try.
I see Vault tec stuff but how do you use them outaide v88? I tried but they dont show up outside the vault.
Once you complete the entire Vault 88 mission, the parts become available to use outside of the Vault space. :)
Manufacturing duplication glitch? How come after so many years of building I haven’t heard this one?
It’s not often brought up and it’s tricky, but when it works it’s awesome! ruclips.net/video/o4lDUafxMuI/видео.htmlsi=3M1oX_eEbJ5oaGo6
Ok can I get a tutorial how to do glitch these settlements
Wow warehouse pieces do not blend well with the barn pieces.
I enjoy the pop of color the red barn pieces bring to the warehouse pieces, but everyone's aesthetic is different.
default flags are so bad.
How on earth are you building this big and detailed without lag? One settlement per save file?
Oh I definitely suffer from some framerate drops. You can see some around 9:35. It really varies from settlement to settlement. IIRC my Egret Tours Marina build has some serious framerate drops. I have noticed my drops are nowhere near as bad on the PS5 but they still happen.
