  • It’s the season and temperatures are falling. Are you still getting out to fly your drone?
    I’ve had a surprise incident involving a cold battery. It could have cost me my drone, so I’m going to share it with you.
    Some further research has revealed seven key things to keep in mind when flying in cold
    weather.

    I had this very thing happen to me, I hadn't flown in quite awhile, but I always keep my DJI MINI 2 in the car, I took it out to get some beautiful fog videos, I only got about 300' to 400' and got the "Critically low battery" warning, RTH started and NEVER made it, dropped from about 75' through the trees, I was able to use "Find my drone" to pinpoint it. But it destroyed the camera and cracked the body. DJI Care Refresh sent me a NEW one. Thank goodness for Care Refresh 😊

      Good for you. The other thing about flying in the cold is that plastic gets brittle. That explains the cracks. Happy flying!

    If you are starting with a cold battery warning, simply waiting for the warning to disappear doesn't fix the problem. Especially when you start the props. As the props spin they are hitting the drone with a cold breeze so it will hurt the drone more if you start the props with batteries that are already too cold.

    I also live in Canada and i am a new drone « pilot » (only 2 weeks), so it was good for me to see this video to remind me of the possible dangers that come with our cold weather. Thank you.

    RPAs can be operated between -5c to 50c however DJI recommends to operate between 32°F to 104°F (0°C to 40°C) as -10C can permanently damage the RPA battery. Remember temperature mat differ in air compared to ground. For more info please refer to RPA certification

    In Finland now it's -15 celcius I took my Hubsan zino mini se for a spin . After a couple of minutes drone started to warn about battery cell power differencials. So i took it down and lesson learned. Maybe just fly in warmer days. 😊 (besides my fingers freezed..so not very injoyable experiment)

      Yes, here in Alberta I'm experiencing much of the same, even though our winter is exceptionally warm, so for this year. I've flown the Mini 2 in -16 ºC before, and it was okay, but not comfortable at all. Thanks for sharing 😉

    They are smart batteries. The temp should be shown on the remote control.. if it shows below 32f they shut down . Or if they are to hot.. ill start my flights with the battery around 29c. By the time my flight is over its 45 or 47c.

      Yes, that's likely exactly what happened in my case. However, this came out of the blue, when I had expected the battery to worm up inside the drone while hovering. In hindsight I'm surprised it even let me take off. Thanks for sharing!

    Hello. I try to make sure the temperature isn’t below 40F while flying. Understandably, there are far better drones than mine, but I feel a little lost when I can’t catch a sunset or something with it occasionally. I notice a dramatic decrease in the duration of the batteries even at 40-50.

    • @TheOneDroneMan
      @TheOneDroneMan  7 месяцев назад +1

      Mine seem to work well even around the freezing point, as long as the batteries are warm, but I bring them back to me way before the battery goes orange. Thanks for sharing!

    I flew in -40C but didn't fly long enough to test the batteries... the drone lasted longer than I did.
    At -10--20C though, I have flown for a few hours and I honestly haven't noticed any significant battery degradation. After -10C i did see some battery errors and I just hovered the drone for a minute till it went away and flew like normal.

      @TheOneDroneMan  6 месяцев назад +1

      I think you're okay if the batteries aren't near frozen to begin with. Thanks for sharing 🙂

      The first day that it was -40C in Edmonton I tried to capture something from a drone that had been outside overnight and it would not even start. Beginning with a warm drone was definitely a must.@@TheOneDroneMan

    If you use frozen batteries it destroys them, coming from someone who builds solar power systems

    So is it worted to fly in winter?

    • @TheOneDroneMan
      @TheOneDroneMan  7 месяцев назад

      It depends, as long as it's not extremely cold or icy.
