Jeff asks you to sing along at his shows. His words when I saw him in Austin were something along the lines of "why the fuck did I write these songs if you are not gonna sing along with me?"
It's rare to hear a live performer sound exactly like they did in their recording...especially when that recording was over 15 years ago! Jeff hasn't skipped a beat.
Okay, I'm not trying to degrade your comment. He sounds great but he sounds nothing like he did when the album was recorded. I think he sounds different. Not better or worse but definitely different. Now you can say it's better but that's subjective but he does not sound the same. His voice is definitely deeper
Everyone singing together is what makes the live performances so special. If you wanted to hear Jeff, why wouldn't you just go listen to the album? If you were there, you'd have thought it was absolutely magical. And it was.
I feel like the reason the people who are angry about the singing is precisely because they haven't fully felt the beauty of communion They wouldn't feel so angry if they saw the love that's around and in them. Life, baby
Saw him perform in York PA - Jeff asked the crowd repeatedly to sing with him and move closer to the stage. So, even though I would rather hear just him sing...it was kind of sweet that he asks the crowd to sing along. One of the best shows I've ever seen and one of the most memorable for me.
Most people who i have played this album for cannot get into it because of the singing, understandable i suppose but i enjoy Jeff's voice a lot, it's just raw and honest, fits the lyrics and music quite well i would say.

After reading only a handful of the comments here, it seems that some have issues with others singing at the shows? The following is Mangum's opinion on the topic, or, at the very, least his opinion this is his opinion on the night of Aug 13, 2011. JM : "So, uh...do you, uh...are you guys gonna sing, or no?" Crowd: Enthusiastic assurance they will indeed sing along JM: "There's some bullshit idea that like I don't like people to sing along with my songs. It's like, why the fuck did I write them then?" Crowd: Laughs. Continues to not noticeably sing any louder. JM: (during Two-Headed Boy, Pt. Two) "....I'm still wanting my face on your cheek...FUCKING SING!...And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle..."
I got to see them in Austin Texas during their reunion. One of the most amazing memories I've had. Hearing thousands of people sing Two Headed Boy at the top of their lungs, is something I'll never forget. I AM LISTENING TO HEAR WHERE YOU ARRRRRRE!! was absolutely unbelievable
as a musician, it's the nicest thing every when the crowd sings along with me, Jeff is killing it out there they're just being fans... people at concerts sing along, man, they aren't intentionally trying to ruin his show...
Singing along at concerts is awesome when you're there. It really adds to the experience. I guess it doesn't make for the best bootleg recording, but that's not really the purpose of a concert, is it?
I saw Jeff Mangum at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
They're perplexing. My ex introduced them to me about 14 years ago when she used to play two headed boy. I was put off by Jeff's voice at first, and there's some painful notes in that song, but his voice has so much emotion. Such simple music really, written and performed with passion.
im so happy i got lyrics from this song tattoo’d on my arm when i was a teenager… fuck those people who say you always regret tattoo’s you get when you’re young.
+Christopher Battle Sorry for the late reply, but I think Coraline was asking how you were filming because Jeff Mangum doesn't like people to film his shows. When I saw them in Brooklyn a thunderstorm stopped the concert for 20 minutes or so, and the crowd was furious, but the band finished the set, and at the end Jeff said, "I just want you guys to know that these people here at Prospect Park are just looking out for your safety. I want to give my compassion, my love and my peace to everyone here. I know that in your hearts, you're all beautiful. Have a great night." That was pretty much all he said the entire night. Doesn't depress me at all. And in terms of his appearance, which is again subjective, I think the beard and long hair suit him well. I think I was at this show. And while I understand how it's nice people know all the words... I very much enjoyed it better when I could hear just the music, and not random drunk people singing. I too sang along. But it was sung quietly, not yelled. I was pissed when I had to try my best to make out Jeff's lyrics from him vs the large group of drunk people singing. Yes I like to sing to the music also. Just not so that it overtakes the musicians melody and ruins the concert for everyone else.
Did you not read the ticket or signs? This is an artist to experience and not cheapen and ruin by taking a video. those requests for no cameras were not there to stop piracy, it was a specific request from the artist due to his phobias. And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keepin' here with me
What a curious life
We have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees
Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
But now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name
What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all 'round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
