Their drummer has got to be the most under appreciated drummer of all time.

Funny my name is just "j" and 20 yrs later I named my kid Emmett after murph. I was a drummer. And my son hates me now that I reveled that to him.
My guitar is autographed by j mascis. My band opened for them in 1989 but we met in line at Wawa getting hoagies in Philly. And we went to a bunch of record shops and diners to talk music in Philly and Mass. We talked a lot about the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Neil Young and ratm. J gets a lot of his "influences" from obsure pop bands of the 70's to old blues and country riffs to 70's heavy metal and country rock. Lyrical styles come from hundreds of unknown country tracks and those 70's pop sad love songs.
So I love heavy distortion with clean melodies subversive lyrics. Love ratm plus a thousand more. I'm definitely more political than personal relationships like j mascis.
Nirvana were heavily influenced by them. Nonsense lyrics with distorted pop riffs for a nonsense world still works.
It's a shame mascis mental problems lead to so many problems with others. His colaberations when not strictly controlled by him work the best. When he does the whole thing the albums come out the same. That was a long 20 years. Because he sips from the same pool all the time. Which is his greatest weakness musically.
Artists from humble beginnings always want control. Springsteen, Young, Blink 182, Morrissey, Pixies, etc, etc, etc all power struggle. Seems to be human nature. He should of just started out as a solo artist But was too poor or too insecure to do it like most of us.
Gotta wonder where musicians and music would be today if their egos from 30 yrs ago didn't get in the way.
Now many try to bury the hatchet either for money or old glory. Like all the Blink 182's out there. It's better to burn out than fade away. At least Cobain knew it and did it. Gotta wonder.
