Close Call! Major Adrenaline Moment In My First Caterham Race!

- This is my first ever Caterham race! A completely wet track at Oulton Park but strangely I wouldn't have wanted it any other way - the race was more exciting than I could have imagined! The Caterham Academy cars are so pure and the driving experience so distilled it's one of the best feelings you can have in a car - this is Caterham racing!

Good lad. Its all good your pace is fantastic. You will learn so much from this first race . I did karting for years and you will find yourself searching for the grip in the wet and will be suprised what lines actually work . Like you say the adrenaline is epic. Looking forward to your first win , it wont be long me thinks....

Well done James, the first time I took mine to the track it rained as I got there. Its a stroked 1900cc with dyno 175 rwh. A few Porsche's had come to the track but left due to rain so I was on my own. The marshal told me to take it easy if it was my first time out, I assured him I would and left the gate lightly spinning it in first, hooked up in second and gave it a bit more throttle and ended up facing him sliding backwards up the road in about 10 car lengths from where I started :) The marshal called me in and he turned out to be a professional racer, he grabbed a helmet, jumped in the passenger side and did a free one hour driver training session in the wet with me. So much fun :)

I gotta say having been racing myself with an International race licence and as a racer and car tester/journo myself I have to say hats off and well done fella absolutely mega racing.

Very nice driving in the rain James! 👍 Respect! Wathching this race did me thinking of the karting session in Francorchamps a few weeks ago, it as also raining and the track was wet and very slippery. However I had the 2nd best time 😜.
All in all a successful start considering a spin.....well done James!

Congrat James, u you clearly have what it takes to be on top. I'm sure that you will be able to control clutch better and that you can do better, control of that adrenaline rush that keeps on pushing till the end and after the race and that mind set that always pushes you to do more and to squeeze more from yourself and car just a bit more.
Congrats once more for great race can't wait to see what can you produce next and as I said you have what it takes to be on top.

So glad you’ve done this, I’ve often commented on channels for more track days but this is another step.
Great to see some telemetry on screen as you’ve done.
You say the cars are not the fastest but I’ve found Caterhams one of the fastest cars around a track, that’s including Porsche’s, Ferraris et al.. best at cornering.
Also speedo showing 160ish (mph I take it) at certain points... that’s very quick, especially in that rain.

Welcome to the raw adrenaline of racing in Sevens! Nothing like it, is there? Top skills and top commitment on display - super impressive for such terrible conditions.
By the way - would it be possible to post the full uninterrupted races - just the same in-car view with telemetry as you had, but a single 20-minute unedited version, maybe with voiceover of what you're thinking at the time (if you can remember!). I've done a few of those myself and people seem to really like them, especially with the commentary.

Unlucky, you did awesome for your first race in the wet. Oulton is one of my favourite tracks, druids is extra slippy in the wet as you get tree sap off the over hanging trees. Everything is a learning experience and it looks like your picking it up ridiculously fast. Won’t be long before your on top of the podium 😎😎😎

From doing the Acadamy years ago , for wet races if you put 3 widths of tank tape from he top of the screen coming back onto the roll cage , you will keep a goodly amount of the rain off the inside of the screen
