After a couple of years of development, Richard Hammond took his last ever Top Gear car racing! He entered the modified MGB into a classic car race at Oulton Park, and with Ben Collins (the old Stig) there to support him, Richard's aim was simply to finish the race. With the car being in good shape, all he had to do was not crash...

Top Gear car, Hammond racing, Ben commentating, doesn't get much better than that.
It seriously doesn't. I feel like we are watching an obsession be born in Richard.
Now that the Grand Tour is done, this is the type of content we need. By far the best Drive Tribe video in a long time.
The last couple seasons of Hammond's Workshop have been a lot about getting this car out on the track. Really worth watching if you're looking for more of this.
@@DarthB1ggles Not everyone can watch it sadly
@@boomeraus0073 Well.. if you can, you should. Should I have not recommended it because not everyone has access?
"We could be gentle with it... in the hopes it will last longer...but whats the point in that?" - Me & Every $1000 sh*tbox car I have owned in the last 30 years. 😂
what's the worst that can happen, I've had it for 2 years, time for a new one anyway
@@LordInter "Let's see if these reliability issues that I've watched on RUclips about this car are actually true. RedLine Torture Test...Begin! *Eurobeat Intensifies*"
@Jungles_of_Lustria ooooh that's what that rattling was!
hmmmm I wonder what just fell off, can't be important the wheels are still attached
@@LordInter I am not at all ashamed to say that exact line of reasoning has crossed my mind and lips multiple times over the years. I'm just returning metal to the Earth from whence it came by leaving my muffler in the ditch on a winding logging Road in the middle of nowhere. 🤓
In my $#¡tbox days, I’d always keep 2 running & tagged, and another ‘round back waiting to be slotted in. That way, even if I blew one up, I had another to get me to work Monday.
Thank you Hammond, Ben and Drivetribe for actually still providing us old Top Gear thrills!!? (Y)
Its not the stig...its the stigs helmetless, talkative cousin
😂😂😂
Some say he was the stig, but in a failed experiment they had to replace him...
i hear that in Jeremy's voice 😂
He’s the Stig’s pet Hamster
given how talkative he is, i'm shocked he lasted so long
His grin was so genuine and infectious, he was like a kid in a toy shop for the first time.
I think that’s one of my favourite films DriveTribe has done. Richard’s willingness to learn and sheer enthusiasm is very engaging as is Ben’s solid advice and his obvious desire to see Richard do well. It seems that even at the age of 54 Richard still needs that adrenaline rush which he got from filming TG/GT and has to do something now to replace. The discussed differences between ‘racing for tv and racing for real’ is also fascinating.
i imagine ben has given richard advice before
@@topmandog1In his book Ben only talks about the BritCar24 race.
@@gillianpile7910 OK.....
I get the feeling that it was more Clarkson and, perhaps to a lesser extent, May that were done with the Grand Tour
@@sambarker7930 Yeah. They're also about 10 years older. More if Richard turned 39 again, but I did hear him admit to 50 at some point.
This video makes me so happy. Richard is genuinely so excited after the race. It’s amazing to see! And having Ben Collins as part of the team…even better!
No one has better comedic timing with a simple "no" than hammond. Its masterful. 2 letters... 1 syllable... And het so much was comveyed.
This is fun watching Richard attack racing seriously. Knew his progress would be quick. I think the issue with a lot of drivers is finding the bravery to find the limit. Richard knows what going over the limit is like better than most 😂
He knows more than most race drivers what over the limit can mean.
I love how after all these years, Hammond still lingers on Ben's every word 🙌🏼
Amazed Richard didn't bin it.. but Ben and Rich together for a Race is brilliant!!
Ben Collins as the host of this series has legs. Best content on this channel yet, by a margin.
Nice to see Richard excited again. Hopefully this means his Panto debute will have to wait a while yet.
I know they said that they're done, and getting old but it would be fun to see the three (or 4 if Ben is up for it) to attempt a 24hr race again. Maybe in one of their old cheap cars like Richard has done here. Obviously, Clarkson has the farm. But a weekend away wouldn't hurt. 😁
Need to see Ben in the racing team just for a bit of old time Top Gear vibes again. Must admit Ben just commentating is fantastic for Drivetribe.
I was there at the meeting. Got some great pictures of Hamster too.
It's so nice to see Ben and Hammond make content together
Respectable result, it made me think back of Gran Turismo, racing with my first car that hasn't gone through all the racing mods yet.
Would be cool to see the progress on this one, definitely weight reduction and more power for now.
Maybe some day the Cog can make a monster.
The video made me realize that over the years Richard has done most of the car related stuff for us, the viewers. It's great to see him doing something for himself.
From watching the driver change over, a quick release booster cushion would be the mod/upgrade. lol
Hammond and Ben do have chemistry. I see potential in another show. Maybe purely modding cars for racing. A mix of engineering and driving. Doing each mod and seeing each improvement in lap time. Hammonds clearly has a decade or more to give.
not strictly true that Richard hadnt done any racing bewteen the 24hr race and this race because he did do the rallycross racing toward the end of top gear. I guess you can forgive him with the amount of head trauma hes had
The Grand Tour may be over, but this is definitely not the last we’ll see of the trio’s solo shenanigans.
Im really glad that Richard has Ben to coach him, these two are mates for decades
Nice to see Ben with Richard again
it has a lot of top gear vibe..... i think we would like to see futures films with you guys in the future, like in the olden days.... in the Sunday evenings.
Thank you
Richard, the smallest cog and drive tribe should try to attend the SPA SIX HOURS CLASSIC!! See Chris Harris his video about this race and just imagine the fun and content it would deliver
Richard looks so confused, knowing that he is talking to the Stig, not being the Stig… being the Stig 🤪
and even weirder the stig responds
@@SimonBauer7 🤣🤣
It's also interesting as I feel Richard was the hardest on Ben back when he published his book (at least on camera), but since then has had the most interaction with him (as far as I know). He's the one that filmed the bit with helping the military amputees when Ben was coaching them on rallycross, and obviously all the drive tribe stuff now.
I would love to have more lap commentary and racing lessons from Ben! Phenomenal!
He's not the Stig but he is the stig's small crash prone cousin 😂
always loved when the three amigos entered races so I'm defs here for this series!
This is great!
I know I'm asking a lot, but it would be SO COOL to end the year with a peaceful, unpretentious, relaxing, not super high production and fun trip with the Trio, EXCLUSIVE ON DRIVE TRIBE!
This might be one of my favorite DT videos. Hammond was like a kid on Christmas, and Ben's commentary was perfect.
I will say that I do hate the fact that we can't get Hammond's Workshop in the States. I've only seen clips and would kill to be able to watch the whole series.
That Britcar 24h race with the BMW 330d is arguably the best thing Top Gear ever did.
Its great that these people still work together from time to time.
Oulton, our local track...what a place. Used to go there for BSB when the kids were little...
Love seeing Hammond taking motorsport seriously and loving it. For the car, focus on all of the handling, make it a gem to drive. When RH is done with it, keep it for others to race under the COG name
Ben is so good as presenter. I am not sure how he hasn't been scooped up for a major production.
DriveTribe deserves at least 10M subs.
It’s great to see Richard so very engaged in what he’s doing and loving it. It’s also great to see the response the littlest cog and drivetribe get in response to their content. With regards to the weight of the car, ally bonnet, boot doors if possible but losing as much of the glass as they can, replacing it with Perspex. Getting rid of the dash and replacing it with a digital display and small switch panel. Lose every decorative ounce out of the car. Here’s to the future success of TLC Racing.
What a great episode! One of the best! Give a raise to the person who had the idea of calling Ben Collins to be the host with Hammond.
Its funny how Hammond is more focus on having fun while Ben is obsessed with racing like all racing drivers 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cheers from Brazil!
The best ever with 2 absolute pros. More of this please. Lol
Ah oulton park. Love this track. Crashed once here half the track day guys helped rebuild my car. Was back on track in 3 hours. Plus it’s tricky but soooo much fun.
MGB on Minilites - lovely. Also that Herald / Vitesse got the best start! Great video gentlemen and well done Richard.
first congradulations on the podium , and huge thumbs up to Richard for the memory upscale :) that was the most fantastic part of the whole video, loved seeing Ben the greatest Tame racing driver.
Richard, as well as your plans for the body panels in GRP etc don't forget to swap the glass for plastic of some sort, and minimise the painting!!
I'd replace the glass for Lexan! Perfect clarity
This is something that would properly suit James May from the preperation side I think. Jeremy..........not so much. But seeing Ben teach Richard more about racing is great
Really, really, really, really, really bloody loved this video. Beats the majority of stuff on tv hands down. Ben and Richard in the same team pleeeeassseee.
You can tell hammond is enjoying himself here, he always seems a bit stressed in his videos but this was nice to see 👍🏽
Just try and remember Richard, keep the roof facing the sky.
Brilliant to see Hammond racing he learned very quickly, if I was modifying this it would be Perspex windows ,some fibreglass panels and a k series 1.8 vvc engine
The insurance for this must be mental! The premiums for all the other drivers now Hammond is raving with them.
Interesting to see "the other side" of what was shown in the Workshop episode 2 weeks ago.
Met Ben a few times around the tracks, what you see on screen is exactly how he is off it, such a nice guy
This was truly great to watch and seeing Ben take Richard under his racing wing is awesome. Can't wait to see what track is next to come and any other things drivetribe puts in front of me eyes. Lol
When are we getting DriveTribe racing team, ❤❤❤❤
Awesome video and great work Smallest Cog and Richard,
Ben you are just legendary new team principle 😊❤❤
The best advice I got when I was learning to drive on a track in my 1999 Miata was exactly what Richard said, don't get a faster car until a faster car will give you faster laps. I love his the golf analogy... don't buy a bag full of expensive clubs until your clubs are what's holding you back.
Ohhooo. Im glad this is where its all going. Its more lively
if he wants to make the car quicker he should put Ben behind the wheel 😆
Richard is living every Man's dream!
Couldn't be happening to a more deserving person.
It’s so great to see the stig freed from his helmet and sharing his knowledge. Kind of like a long lost 4th presenter with actual racing pedigree
The presenter becomes the race driver n the race driver becomes the presenter. It's a long long way from top gear . Love it !
Richard Hammond is the person who knows what the danger and death is. So it's say when the vehicle just brake down he will fix that thing
Great video! More of this please!! 👍
Grew up near Oulton Park. Great circuit. Used to sneak through the woods to get a free view usually on a Saturday afternoon. Can’t do that now sadly. Touring car, some F3, a bit of the gold cup. Saw Mika Hakkinen there a few times in his F3 days - he was good.
This was all pre-Ben driving there. We’re talking the late 80s and early 90s (am 49 now).
Hammond is a nut case. I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Richard did some racing in Poland during Grand Tour, he crashed of course...
Happy Sunday everyone
Happy Monday.
Happy Sunday/Monday to you too mate
Great video! Awesome with BC "THE STIG" as the main host! Love y'all, thank you!
Phantastic video. Loved it, thank you. As far as tips: Indeed “Add lightness” as the grandmaster Colin Chapman said
I've been watching British Superbike Racing for years, Oulton is an amazing track
I did giggle when the bolster cushions were removed between drivers lol
This was fun! But how come there wasnt a single decent in car camera to show actual driving and racing?
My guess is you’ve found the point where Drivetribe content rights finish and Discovery channel’s “Richard Hammond’s Workshop” pick up…
@@MercuryGremlin that would make sense, didnt think about that factor aswell
Congratulations to Richard, well done.
Makes my day to see Mr Collins finally get the attention he deserves 👏
Who needs TG or TGT? simply sublime, just one thing for Richard, as a former racer I can tell you don't waste any more money on the MG, I did the same thing with a 60's classic Capri, until I won my class, you are wrong about it making you a better racer, get straight into a more powerful car & go out and buy a race winning car and then drive within your capabilities, then you will progress and learn the race craft needed to be a top performer in a competitive car, your half way there already with all the track work you have done over the last few decades, good luck, look forward to seeing you on the top step & hopefully with Izzy & Ben as co-drivers at some point.
I have that same Smallest Cog livery on my Jag e type on Gran Turismo. Quite a cool "old schoolish" livery.
I cant wait Hammond goos to see you back in the drivers seat ❤
RUclips does not get better than this.
Some Say He was the Driver of mystery.. and some say he now has his own YouYube channel.. all we know..he was the Stig!😁
What a great family reunion just neen may to join
Use to own an MGBGT and race it in auto cross. Cylinder head was shaved for a bit more compression. Larger carburetors, though I think a Weber side draft would’ve unlocked more power. Braided stainless brake lines for better peddle feel. Ferodo brake pads, but probably something better available now. Fiberglass hood would’ve helped. Door glass to Plexi would’ve helped. Always felt to me like it needed a bigger anti-roll bar up front. I had the heavier rear leaf spring with bigger shackles. Gearbox ran slightly lighter synthetic lube. Engine oil was synthetic. Bigger radiator for California weather. If rules allow it, maybe hard weld over the spot welded body sections.
I had good fun watching!.
Lighten up every bit that is legal to remove from the car Richard. And by gosh keep your mind on the task of driving over commentary. We want you to focus on the task at hand. Having fun, being safe and winning some races will make us all happy. Can comment AFTER your drives. I dig that you are humble and WE have the same mentality about rights of passage. When we feel we have got to the next level of our skills, that is when we can justify the next bump up in equipment. Don't need the most expensive stuff to learn on/with. And often in driving there is a lot of good reason why new drivers are not thrown out into the world in massive expensive performance machines. Mistakes will be made. Best not to be made in something excessively pricey. Good job here Richard!
LSD, alu bonnet, ditch the glass for poly, glass wings, supercharge the lump. Get that beauty GT up to race pace! Woot! Lets go Cogs!
It is, the one and only Stig! Respect.
Richard has done at least some racing since BritCar. The RallyCross from series 18 springs to mind.
Richard, pls never leave RUclips.
Don't know how it'd stack with the rules, but folk have stuck a KV6 in the MGB and been very happy with the results...and those old engines are bulletproof if you sort out the thermostat.
Ooh, look at upside-right Richard. Well done.
Anyone else's competitiveness got themselves screaming 'GET BEN IN THE CAR' 😂
Abbie was their other driver alongside Anthony previously.
Love the content and inputs from Ben, will definitely become a better driver.
Anyone else notice @ 13:10 that they had to remove the booster seat for Richard?
Chunks wouldn't have fitted other wise 🤣 no time for moving seats about. fastest pitstop methology, hence the 9 place gain
Great work Richard!, Willwood brakes buddy!
Well done Hamster. Good show.
Props to whoever edited this and forgot to include the product placement sponsorship ads.
I'd like to see you with maybe a 2.5L, with a familiarity to the track and the car. Getting comfortable with how the car moves and knowing what to expect makes the racing drug even more addictive!
Ah, Sunday nights almost as they used to be in the golden years 👍👍
Awesome work rich
