    Happening In Court:
0:00 - FL v. Curtis Reeves Movie Theater Shooting Trial Day 9 -
    Curtis Reeves - Defendant
There is no dispute that a retired police captain shot and killed a finance manager during a movie theater argument, but jurors will decide if it was self-defense. Curtis Reeves, 79, stands trial for allegedly murdering Chad Oulson, 43, in 2014. You can watch in the player above.
Reeves was sitting behind Oulson in a movie theater on Jan. 13, 2014, in Pasco County, Florida, and complained about the man texting during previews for the film Lone Survivor. Oulson, a U.S. Navy veteran and the father of a 2-year-old girl, told Reeves he was communicating with his daughter’s babysitter. Reeves, a retired captain for the Tampa Police Department, asked for a manager to intervene. He returned to the theater and argued with Oulson. Oulson allegedly threw popcorn at him, and the retired police captain shot and killed him. This round also grazed the hand of Chad’s widow Nicole Oulson.
Reeves maintained self-defense, that Oulson was coming over the seats to punch him. His attorneys unsuccessfully pushed for the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law to apply.
“Did you want to shoot him?” Reeves’ attorney asked in a 2017 hearing.
    “Absolutely not.”
“So why did you shoot?” the attorney said.
“Well, at that point it was his life or mine,” Reeves said.
When asked if he felt Oulson was going to hurt him, Reeves affirmed, fighting back tears, “No question.”
Nicole Oulson testified that she had her hand out to try to restrain her husband during the shooting. She described Reeves at the instigator in this fatal confrontation. For example, he kept needling Oulson after returning from trying to get a manager and said something to the effect of, “I see that you put the phone away now that I went to get management.”
“It was not a polite, ‘Oh, thank you for putting it away,'” Oulson said, according to The Tampa Bay Times. “It was to keep nagging at Chad . . . to keep the argument going.”

He has an advantage over a regular criminal on the stand. He knows how to conduct himself because as an officer I bet he had to testify on many of his cases. So he is well prepared for the cross. Jury is going to rely heavily on his police background could either be good or bad depending on how they view it. I'm afraid it will go to his favor. They are going to ignore the beginning of this situation and only go to the part of the supposed cell phone throw at him.ans the popcorn. That is where I feel they are going to say he was justifiable.

    • @DovahKanye
      @DovahKanye 2 года назад

@@denben8530 The only part that is relevant to the self-defense claim was the part where Chad threw his cell phone and continued the assault. Talking to someone is not provocation unless he used fighting words, which no one alleged he did, not even the prosecution, at any point. It didn't rise to legal provocation. He was well within the law the entire time during that encounter. The only person who broke the law was Chad Oulson. And he paid for it with his life. And it was a complete justified shoot. Don't wanna get show, don't assault people and put them in reasonable fear. Pretty simple stuff.

What Chad should have done was turn off his phone, what chad should have done was not assault someone. Shouldn't have thrown his phone, grabbed his popcorn. By the by before all of that he could have actually went to another part of the theatre, there were plenty of rows behind he could have went to, which was empty and he could have played with his phone the entire movie for all he cared. See two can play this game, the onus isn't on purely on the defendant.
"He had a horrible temper, and it horrifically escalated."
Ironic because when you said this, it applies perfectly to the guy who assaulted the defendant. Talking to someone isn't a legal escalation unless it includes physical threats, which the defendant didn't do, the only guy who escalated it was the one with the objective temper and it got him killed.

He would like to make it about "milliseconds"... the problem is that those milliseconds occurred after a long chain of decisions that Reeves made, all the way back to his decision to bring a gun into the movie theater.

Couldn’t bear to have his ego knocked, couldn’t stand to be disobeyed. So, for something as minor as texting in a movie theatre, this man let his gun do the talking and he showed he was still in charge. And apparently the judicial system thinks that’s ok?!
