  • LIVE COVERAGE: OH v. Dr. William Husel Trial - Former Doctor Fentanyl Murders
    Happening In Court:
    Det. William Gillette - Columbus PD
    Talon Schroyer - Pharmacist
    An Ohio doctor was charged with 25 counts of murder on Wednesday for allegedly prescribing lethal doses of fentanyl to dying patients. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that he has never seen a 25-count murder indictment in his career, adding that the doses Dr. William Husel allegedly ordered in the 25 deaths “could not support any legitimate medical purpose.”
    Husel, 43, was a doctor for the Mount Carmel Health System; he was fired at the end of 2018 after an internal investigation found wrongdoing.
    Husel faces a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison for each count - if convicted.
    Husel’s lawyer Richard Blake claimed that, actually, “this is not a murder case.”
    “I can assure you there was never any attempt to euthanize anyone by Dr. Husel. At no time did he ever have the intent to euthanize anyone,” he said.
    Mount Carmel Health System, for its part, has said in a statement that it “will continue to implement meaningful changes throughout our system to ensure events like these never happen again.”
    The Columbus-based healthcare system also fired 20 other employees after an internal investigation found that patients received exorbitant amounts of Fentanyl. Even though nurses doled out-and pharmacists filled-Husel’s prescriptions, the focus of the criminal investigation remains on Husel, according to prosecutors.
    Mount Carmel President and CEO Ed Lamb said at the time of the investigation’s conclusion that “regardless of the reason the actions were taken, we take responsibility for the fact that the processes in place were not sufficient to prevent these actions from happening.” He added, “we’re doing everything to understand how this happened and what we need to do to ensure that it never happens again.”
    The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Husel’s license in January because the doctor failed “to meet acceptable standards regarding the selection of drugs, violations of the minimal standards of care and failing to cooperate in a board’s investigation,” the board said.
    Mount Carmel has settled at least five wrongful death suits since it fired Husel. Two of the suits that were settled involved deaths of 73-year-old women. Sherry White died in 2014 after receiving two, 100-microgram doses of fentanyl within 16 minutes of each other, the suit alleged. But White’s death certificate said that she died of septic shock from a urinary tract infection (UTI).
    The suit in the death of Peggy Francis alleged that she died six minutes after she was given a 200-microgram dose of fentanyl. The death certificate said that Francis-who was being treated for kidney cancer-died from septic shock caused by a UTI.
    Each of the lawsuits allege that health care providers ignored excessive painkiller warnings from an electronic medical system or that the system failed to work in the first place. After Mount Carmel fired Husel in December, the health care provider updated its guidelines that a usual adult dosage of fentanyl should be between 25 and 100 micrograms, according to an Ohio Department of Health inspection report. Husel faces an additional 19 wrongful-death suits after another eight were settled, according to NBC.

      I don’t think he’s being combative. I think he’s grossly uninformed and appears incompetent. The judge is interrupting and stopping a lot of this witness’ testimony, because he has a tendency to testify to things he doesn’t know; he’s assuming and guessing which the judge stops.

    You're not a doctor but guess what pal you're not a detective either LOL you can't even answer detective questions. Hence the reason why the prosecution is so scared for the defense to ask any type of question they're afraid this detective is going to blow it

      It's not much better but it's amazing how much better his memory is with the prosecution. You kind of have to talk to this detective like you would a child. Short-winded questions. Broken down very easy a little at a time.

    Baez seems unprepared. He knows the material but didn’t write up proper questions. It’s hard to watch bc he actually has some good points he’s trying to make that are getting lost by his terrible questions that are easy to object to.

    • @sparkleybright

      Baez may seem unprepared and that he’s asking questions that aren’t allowed, but what happens is even if the question is not allowed, the jury gets to hear the questions anyway and sometimes the witness answers before the prosecutors can object. So, he gets the unallowed question in and maybe even an answer!

    the lack of professinonalism is beyond anything I have seen. They leave the camera rolling while talking about other cases/other judges and then the judge for some reason just stays sitting and consumes a chocolate bar...then pushes himself up and grunts same as he returns I just can't believe this. now he is eating yet another choclate bar.

  • @kathrynl2301
    @kathrynl2301 Год назад +1

    The judge is a character, that's for sure. You don't often see much personality from judges. To my untrained eye he seems like an excellent judge who is a bit of a showman too, rightly or wrongly. He lets his personality show at times which probably gives the jury a release from the tension but may well be understandably problematic for the victims' and defendant's loved ones.

    No it's not about the detective. As an RN I know what a gun is and does but can't take it apart and put it together again. So don't expect him to know how the pixis works

    • @renaeslaughter3206
      @renaeslaughter3206 2 года назад +4

      But are you investigating how someone else took apart their gun? His job is to learn the details because unless you know how it should work, you can't possibly know if what the doctor did was reasonable or not. To say a person broke the law, you have to know where the action became unlawful.

    The detective shouldn't be condemned as "not investigating" because he isn't fluent in medical terminology or procedures. This was a large investigation spanning years & there has been years (& I'm sure other investigations) since this investigation has concluded. For obvious reasons cops don't have the same training & education as Dr.s. If the detective was using other medical professionals to determine whether the doses DrH was prescribing were appropriate, then that is adequate for an investigation. He doesn't have to have independent personal understanding of medical appropriation of such behavior. If Dr.H came in & shot the terminally ill patients the detective wouldn't need any other Drs to tell him that is an illegal act defined as murder.
