An Ohio doctor was charged with 25 counts of murder on Wednesday for allegedly prescribing lethal doses of fentanyl to dying patients. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that he has never seen a 25-count murder indictment in his career, adding that the doses Dr. William Husel allegedly ordered in the 25 deaths “could not support any legitimate medical purpose.”
Husel, 43, was a doctor for the Mount Carmel Health System; he was fired at the end of 2018 after an internal investigation found wrongdoing.
Husel faces a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison for each count - if convicted.
Husel’s lawyer Richard Blake claimed that, actually, “this is not a murder case.”
“I can assure you there was never any attempt to euthanize anyone by Dr. Husel. At no time did he ever have the intent to euthanize anyone,” he said.
Mount Carmel Health System, for its part, has said in a statement that it “will continue to implement meaningful changes throughout our system to ensure events like these never happen again.”
The Columbus-based healthcare system also fired 20 other employees after an internal investigation found that patients received exorbitant amounts of Fentanyl. Even though nurses doled out-and pharmacists filled-Husel’s prescriptions, the focus of the criminal investigation remains on Husel, according to prosecutors.
Mount Carmel President and CEO Ed Lamb said at the time of the investigation’s conclusion that “regardless of the reason the actions were taken, we take responsibility for the fact that the processes in place were not sufficient to prevent these actions from happening.” He added, “we’re doing everything to understand how this happened and what we need to do to ensure that it never happens again.”
The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Husel’s license in January because the doctor failed “to meet acceptable standards regarding the selection of drugs, violations of the minimal standards of care and failing to cooperate in a board’s investigation,” the board said.
Mount Carmel has settled at least five wrongful death suits since it fired Husel. Two of the suits that were settled involved deaths of 73-year-old women. Sherry White died in 2014 after receiving two, 100-microgram doses of fentanyl within 16 minutes of each other, the suit alleged. But White’s death certificate said that she died of septic shock from a urinary tract infection (UTI).
The suit in the death of Peggy Francis alleged that she died six minutes after she was given a 200-microgram dose of fentanyl. The death certificate said that Francis-who was being treated for kidney cancer-died from septic shock caused by a UTI.
Each of the lawsuits allege that health care providers ignored excessive painkiller warnings from an electronic medical system or that the system failed to work in the first place. After Mount Carmel fired Husel in December, the health care provider updated its guidelines that a usual adult dosage of fentanyl should be between 25 and 100 micrograms, according to an Ohio Department of Health inspection report. Husel faces an additional 19 wrongful-death suits after another eight were settled, according to NBC.

All the laughing, especially the uproarious laughter, really bothers me. The humor by the judge is inappropriate and unprofessional in my opinion. This is a serious matter they’re talking about. Patients died, medical professionals have lost they’re jobs and licenses in some cases. Treat this process with the respect and reverence it’s due please.

This is very common in court. Look up the Curtis Reeves trial unprofessional judge clicking her pen, coughing in the mic, she didn't know how to rule for objections. She got tricked for an attorney testifying by them merely just adding "would you say it is true or not true question X?"
@@bowlingbbabe I’ve watched so many trials and this is honestly the first time I’ve seen such a degree of odd behaviour. It’s one of the most unprofessional groups of attorneys and judge that I’ve watched before - and this is a huge case! I’ll definitely check that one out.
I keep feeling like i’ve ate a cannabis brownie because this case is sooo hard to make sense of and follow. It is not presented with any organization. It’s like the case is being tried because somebody ordered them to do so and ALL participants resent it and certainly didn’t prepare for it. It’s treated like a joke. Glad I’m not on the jury. 🤦🏻♀️
The female defense lawyer can't read. She was constantly reading a highlighted sentence and a word she used wasn't in the sentence. This was in the video with the doctor who read reports and let everyone know he invented the Liberation Bundle. Which I went and read about it and still don't know what it is.
A murderer wouldn’t legally document all relevant medications…. Food for thought. This doctor has an exemplary record and it is appalling to accuse this man of murder.
You’d be surprised how truly dense and illogical a murderer can be…especially one with a god complex.
It seems this hospital had a terrible system in place for the process of administration of medication. I think the pharmacist immediately went to CYA mode along with any nurses that were stealing medication. It happens more than you realize. There's a huge drug epidemic in this country.

I'm not secure in thinking the jury gets it or they're interested in anything besides being gaslighted and bribed with birthday cake. This is like watching attendees at an orange man rally, cheering for their own demise.

I feel really bad for this pharmacist! He’s not ‘just’ a pharmacist but a PharmD. He strikes me as dedicated and professional. I was a RN for 48 years and depended on pharmacists countless times for many things.
As a “layperson” and someone not in the medical field, I agree with you! He (Talon) seems very knowledgeable and is doing very well on the stand! 👍🏼

That’s horrible. It’s his duty to point out wrong doing. He knew someone was either over prescribing or a nurse was stealing drugs, which unfortunately does happen.
As an old retired RN I remember what it was like starting out, you went to nights and had little support, when he turned to the more experienced person with him, he got blown off. Sad. You learn facts in school but the experience comes in that first year out. Just my thoughts.
Talon is pretty hostile to the entire case not just one side. He keeps repeating "it does not look good" and knew his job was going to be on the line. Cross will be good. He was concerned but never proactively did anything. Every time I look at him and I think that he wished he had "stayed at Walgreens" So many probably competent medical people lost their jobs from a failed hospital . I can't believe it is still functioning.
Nothing is being said about the status of these pts., why they were being taken off respirator. And the hospital is hanging out the staff to dry. I always carried malpractice insurance on my homeowners even though many assume hospital covers you. If they can show you didn't practice policy and procedures, they will leave you dry. Perhaps the fact that RNs stayed quiet and didn't stand up for pts. relates to the university education of today.

Throughout my career I worked in a clinical pharmacy, an infusion center, doctor’s office, and a hospital laboratory. This is totally what happens in any medical setting. Doctor is god. All medical staff learn to chart to make a clear record of events where Doctor makes unusual orders, without coming right out and stating Doctor’s inappropriateness.
Not in my career! I'm not giving a deadly dose of any medication! I don't practice under the doctors order, but under the nurse practice act, and my hospital policy.

I tell you I’m in shock. These doses and frequency of taking the meds out and administering them is insane to me. I’m a FNP never would I prescribe them nor administer them as a RN. And I’ve worked in hospice and oncology where the pain and symptoms of the dying process are sometimes hard to manage.

Great question. I certainly would have! Because I would be shocked at these doses! I don't know what the nurses did, but if they knew, they are responsible as well
I was on morphine following the removal of my kidney, they did triple verification and two staff members needed to be present at administration
I think the humor used in the court is totally fine and is more of a coping skill and a positive one at that. The people that operate this court room are subjected to the most tragic and sad subjects probably every day they're there. You've got to stay sane somehow and I am not sensing that this is detracting from the seriousness of the matter that they're examining, at all. I also want to say that after listening to hundreds of hours of hearings and trials, this judge is so refreshing. I think that the people respect him and think highly of him as well.

The frequent 'eye rolling', deep sighing and overall disdain is, in my opinion very disrespectful to the process especially considering that so many people died. I'm also shocked that he's sucking on sweets during his testimony!

You can get the desired comfort care at a dose that doesn't kill patients. They were all robots, reacting and practicing under the doctor, which is not how we practice legally.

@@Hartleymolly shows what u know I've been a cna for ten yrs watched the elderly die and saw then suffer for hrs and hrs and days until they passed seen it hundreds of times along with my own mother and uncle so

Hearing some of the incidents involving dosing with these patients, jumping catfish! You can pretty much do what you want in there! These poor pts were getting loaded the house down on heavy duty opiates and benzos. Dadgum! I'd be terrified if I woke up in that hospital.
