What wonderful memories you must have! Where in NJ was the farm located? Was the young woman collecting the eggs at the beginning related to you? When I was very little, I used to get soooo mad at the woman because she was taking the hens' "babies." It wasn't right! LOL

Every now and then I'll see a ton of eggs all in one place, and it activates my deep buried toddler brain for some reason. Seeing that many eggs always makes me weirdly happy and I could never figure out why. Until I remembered I used to watch this video on VHS when I was probably 3 or 4. Thanks Sesame Street?
Lyrics: Which come first the chicken or the egg? Which come first the chicken or the egg? How could some so fat and burly come from some so smooth and pearly? Which come first the chicken or egg? Which come first the feather or the shell? Which come first the feather or the shell? When you see one egg or other, Do you ever think about its mother? Which come first the feather or the shell? Now, eggs are all so purty lyin’ on a plate. Or sittin’ here in a carton, neat and straight. And lookin inside a box of eggs might make you feel so great. But do you ever wonder where they was, before they was inside that crate? Which come first the chicken or the egg? Which come first the chicken or the egg? Now, if you wanted to begin again, would you start with an omelet or a hen? Which come first the chicken or the egg? The chicken or the egg?
The question is not "which came first, the chicken or egg?" The question is: "How long did that first chicken have to wait before man started building roads for it to cross to get to the other side?" -Wocka! Wocka!
Heard this song as a pre-schooler for the first and only time until recently and it has never left me. It is exactly how I remembered it listening to it only for the second time today and im 41 years old... except I don't remember the slow intro....all this after discussing which came first, chicken or the egg with my children.
I was just thinking about this song. I really had trouble understanding some of the lyrics to this when I was a little kid, but it's so cool to find this stuff on RUclips now that I'm older and have a better command of the English language and can understand the lyrics so much better than I could 40 years ago. It's so nice that RUclips preserves all these Sesame Street clips that fascinated me as a kid.
If God created Adam and Eve as grown human beings, then He would do the same thing for the animals by creating the chicken first. A baby wouldnt of come first, the adult would. same thing goes for nature
Wowie, amazingly, when I was a kid, I also understood the lyrics as "a witch-come-bird shaking on the eggs"! When you're little, I guess, you're not old enough to properly process things as complicated as song lyrics.

This was seen in "Sing, Hoot, and Howl (With the Sesame Street animals)." Before the song, The chicken and the egg were arguing about who would choose a song. Big Bird breaks them up and says that they should both choose a song, and asks which song do they want. The chicken chooses "Cluck around the clock", and the egg chooses "Which Comes First (The Chicken or the Egg)?". When Big Bird asks "Well, Which comes first?", The egg says it comes first, Then the chicken rejects and says she comes first, And now, They both begin arguing again (Much to Big Bird's dismay).
Oh my goodness thank you. I've always wondered how I saw this considering everything says it's from the 70s and I knew the video I watched it from was not from the 70s.
Which Comes First, the Chicken or the Aig . . . . which comes first, the chicken or the aig? I say the egg came first. Where did the egg come from, you may ask? The dinosaur!
Oh yeah...reminds me of a funny one. The chicken and the egg were laying in bed after doing it. The egg was smoking a cigarette. So the chicken turned to the egg and said "so now we know who came first!" - hope that answers that timeless question :P
A better question is did the chicken cross the road AFTER it was hatched, or did the egg roll across the road first because it couldn't wait to get out of its shell? (Well, at least we comics ask that question!)
@hundredandfour No the chicken because when the world began God made all the animals so they weren't born or hatched. (You can just ignore me if you're not Christian.)
'A Witch-Come-Bird, shakin' on the eggs. The Witch-Come-Bird, shakin' on the eggs.' My interpretation of the lyrics as a kid. It is nonsense to discuss whether eggs come first or chickens come first, both of which have already evolved. The origin of living organisms is not slime molds, but environmental changes such as day and night and the ebb and flow of tides. Crystals are one of the phenomena that occur in unicellular organisms, and as the changes are repeated, they become habits such as learning, and they are called amoeber and slime mold, which are then powdered by drying (reverse evolution). It becomes a virus) and floats, and it enters the oil ball that floats on the water, and it becomes a single cell like an egg with nutrients, and only those that are suitable for the environment become reproductive ecology and can be powdered again. Instead, some of the slime molds moved to other oil balls and proliferated as unicellular organisms, and then the unicellular organisms were combined with those more suitable for the environment to become multicellular organisms. Instead of eggs, the answer was "a single cell type like an egg with a slime mold and an oil ball first", and the breeding principle is different (spices and eggs). Since it is a cell body, the origin of multicellular and large things is nothing but division, proliferation or binding, so we should not discuss biological evolution only with what we have now, this theory was created by me (Tadayoshi Tokuda). Reprinting is prohibited, especially the part of the oil ball that floats on the water is the beginning of oval formation and copyright is generated.
