- From 1974. "Cow Dog Song" is a filmed Sesame Street song segment, in which a cow dog sings about his job, and how he's a "hard workin' dog." The film was produced, directed, scored, and sung by Fred Wardenburg. Some people referred to this song as "Hard Working Dog", but in reality, it's actually called the "Cow Dog Song"
This song popped into my head for no apparent reason after almost 40 years.
Aye mee too
Me too, crazy!
yep thats what made me look it up
Maybe it was because you first saw this video on the sing-along video, Sing Hoot and Howl.
Me too lol
my mom recently reminded me I used to love this song when i was little, I love it all over again. work'n like a doggone dog
Its amazing what sticks with us. I'm 51 and thought about this song (getting ready for work, working like a dog).I never thought it would actually be on here. So tickled.
I started singing this sone to my grandkids today & then was happy to find it on youtube..I told them their parents watched it years ago on Sesame Street! Such a catchy tune! My kids are in their 40's so it's been a LONG time!
Just got my first job. My dad sends me this every morning before I go in. Smh
You have a good dad
Thanks to Fred Wardenberg who wrote and performed this song snd who directed the film!
I remember seeing this on Sing Hoot & Howl VHS
Me too.
The Footrot Flats dog would fit perfectly into every category, he isn’t American though, he’s from New Zealand.
This video discriminates against the hard working Australian Cattle dog working side-by-side with the Border Collie. 😁Often paired together to take advantage of the two breed's different herding styles, the Cattle dog can be seen in a few frames. This is sarcasm and I love this song. ☺
😎💪👍
Stay Rad
This has gotten me brainwashed!
40 years since I’ve seen this & I still sing the refrain. Even got my kids singing it - & they’ve never heard the original. So I looked it up for them now. Thanks for posting!
SAME!!!🤗
My mum does
me too. I also respect dogs who want to work.
"All I know how to do is take a hundred cows and teach 'em some manners..." Epic!
I had to chuckle at that one too
Lol. I know. I sing this song outta nowhere sometimes when I’m running around working hard! My kids are grown and ask “what are you singing mom. It sounds stupid “ So I played video and we were dying laughing. So funny how serious the words are. Lmaooo
Next year 2024 this will be 50 years old and I can remember it like yesterday
2204 50th birthday anniversary celebration party at movie theater TV series finale season start show releases sesame Street Bob McGrath diad before
This song is most excellent on so many levels. I remember the refrain from childhood. Super catchy, still is!
Oohandymandan100
I have a border collie now, 40 years later, because of this song. :)
I remember when on occasions, this clip was followed by a comment made by Madeline Khan: "Wow! That was some hard-working dog! I wonder if he gets paid."
Damn! Memory alert I was just telling that to my daughter!
I wish it was attached to this!!!
I loved this so much when I was little, and enjoyed it again just now.. like 40+ years later 🥰❤🥰
Thank you so much for the nostalgic experience 😍
My fav too!
Sometimes I sing the refrain of this song to my dogs, except I change the lyrics to "You're a dog, you're a lovin' dog, you're a sweet lovin dog!" 😊
On the ranch in idaho where we were raised we had Australian Shepard cow dogs like this.
Whats funny is I thought they shot it on our ranch.
We even had that same truck!
During a conversation this evening with a friend I remembered how the dogs on the ranch worked so hard but they were happy to live the life they were born to do.
And 40ish years later I remembered this clip and now I’m so happy and nostalgic to find it here!
Brought tears to my eyes.
Thankful to be a kid in the 70’s and know a life close to nature and reality before computers took over everything.
I miss the ranch and Grandpa so much, and guess I always will.
So glad and thankful my cousin is still running things up there in the Rockies and her son will be the 6th generation cowboy keeping this kind of life alive.
I think that's a Border Collie.
I love ur story. I feel the same way. I miss growing up with all my cousins, Aunts, Uncles around every weekend. My Aunt Lorraine’s farm who had her animals but also took in every critter that was going to be put down or was abused/ abandoned. “Bless their hearts “ she would say. BBQ, pig roasts, kids running around playing, adults laughing and drinking beer, playing jokes on each other. We were outside after homework and chores every day until dinner. We had nothing like kids do now, but our imaginations would have us finding fun every day. I told my kids that we could go out with a stick and a rock and find something fun to do. Our bikes were a big thing. Keep it clean, oiled the chain, put cards in the spokes and went crazy jumping dirt mounds, racing etc. I think our time as kids was so much better. Problems dealt with fist fights then wind up being friends. Parents gave a damn about their kids behavior and got involved when there was trouble. Making kids apologize and accountable, just knowing it’s gonna be worse when they get home. Yeah it’s ashame things today. Now most of my family is gone or moved away but I wouldn’t trade my upbringing for anything. It was a good life. Sorry to go on but ur story brought me back. Thx for sharing
@@robbyosborne9708both breeds do the same thing. Awesome wranglers. Hard working dogs! Lol
@@nessas8567newbie That's true.
@@nessas8567newbie thank you for sharing your childhood too. Its great to have that kind of life foundation. My cousin is still running the ranch, and i left in pursuit to build my career in publishing.
It was a fun childhood, but being the adult running the ranch and paying for everything i think would be too psychically and financially taxing now.
Huh? I'm absolutely NOT a 30-some year old man immediately sending this to my sister because I remember being Itty Bitty singing this together in front of the TV in our single wide trailer in the early 90s. Sesame kid FOR LIFE right here!
40 years later I still sing this to myself
We must be the same age. 😁
When I was in hi school (69-72) Sesame st came on twice a day. 10am & 5pm. Some days when I came home from school, my little brother would say " the working dog song came on today" so I would watch that 5pm episode, waiting for this song.
Who else first heard the abbreviated version of this song on the video *SING, HOOT & HOWL WITH THE SESAME STREET ANIMALS?*
I have. I have no idea why they cut out the first two verses.
I remember seeing this on the 1991 Sesame Songs VHS, “Sing, Hoot and Howl”.
Me too
My dog found this video very entertaining, thanks, Sesame Street!!
Back when Sesame Street was good.... Im in my 40's now but still have fond memories of watching this when I was little. Started singing this on a particularly bad day at work. My colleagues laughed and morale was boosted.
❤️
I'm 40 now and these memories stick with me ☺☺
Don’t forget that some dogs will even bring you the paper early in the morning, and the best companion in the animal kingdom, no wonder they are called man’s best friend.
Thank you so much for this song! I loved it 40 years ago and can now share it with my kids - they love it too! And it's even better than I remember 🥰😘
Randomly started singing this to my dog today. Great song when I still can sing it 40 years later, lol
nice to see a sesemstrets video where we can actually comment.
My dad always loved this song T_T
Hats off to the Shepherds! Teach 'em cows some manners!
ahh yes, if i have my facts correct, i read up on this, it was on a ranch outside Regis Montana.
Wonder if the ranch is still in operation, and what the dog's name actually was in this skit...
I just watched a Wyoming PBS video on working cow dogs and this came to mind. We had Aussies that we worked cattle with. Awesome athletes!
Plus it’s under suggeted/related videos for this video too!
@@calvinlam7272 PBS is smart.
So I was in an interview, and this song randomly popped into my head.
Well, I'll be doggone!
Obviously a border collie... Reminds me of my smart and obedient pet Sheeteem who died in 2016...
To me, he looks more like an australian shepherd they left the tail on. See his heavier bone and slightly blunter muzzle? I have both aussies and bcs.
I do not think this is a border collie. They are “hard eyed” herders, and this dog is loose all the way. This is either an Australian Shepherd with her tail, or the lesser-known English Shepherd - or Farm Collie. There’s a Blue Heeler trying to take on that particularly unruly Charolais, and the Hard Working Dog is cleaning up that mess on 1-2 cuts. That has absolutely been my experience working cows with Heelers. They get the stock - and me - in trouble!
Wow, this brings me back 😊😊 I always thought it was sheep dog, not cow dog. 🤷♂️🤣
my dog thinks he is a cow- I woke up to a pile of regurgitated grass..... ewww
And some may say it’s a dogs life, great song takes me back to when I was a little boy.
This song is most excellent on so many levels. I remember the refrain from childhood. Super catchy, still is!
Love that blues guitar technique!
You know it takes all kinds of dogs to make a world. And I never said I'm a Hog and as you can see I'm not frog.Trying to tell ya I'm a Dawg! I'm nothing but a A merican Cow Dawg! LOL! 😂
I so remember this song from nearly 50 years ago! Not the entire thing, like the narration between verses, but I was just waiting for the line at the end..."It's a dog's life, and I love it." That part I certainly remembered.
After the song...
(A Watch salesman dog barks as he enters the club, Followed by Gladys the Cow)
Gladys the Cow: Dogs chasing cows, eh? (Chases after the dog)
Big Bird: (Concerned) Gladys, What are you doing?
Gladys the Cow: (To Big Bird) Well, a cow can chase a dog too. (To the Watch salesman dog) How do you like it? Moo! (Chases after the dog again)
Wolfy: (chuckles as Gladys continues chasing the Watch Salesman Dog)
Lamb: (bleating)
Wolfy: Hey, little lambie is bleating her chops about somethin’. I think she has a song. Ooh, delicious child.
Big Bird: Okay lamb. What’s your favorite song?
@@calvinlam7272 Lamb: (In spanish) Me gustaria cantar mi favorita cancion "Baa Baa Bamba".
@@collinpolivka8419 Buster the Horse: Alrighty. Who knows Spanish ‘round here?
@@calvinlam7272 Big Bird: Uh, No problem. I can translate. You were saying lambie?
@@collinpolivka8419 Lamb: (In spanish, again) Me gustaria cantar mi favorita cancion “Baa Baa Bamba”.
My favorite animal song 🎵 is Cow 🐄 Dog 🐕 song 🎵.
We sing this every time the Working Group comes up on any of the dog shows.
I'm a dog a workin' dog a hard workin' dog.
Hard workin' dog.
I can hear my uncle right now..."Their gonna run all the meat off them cattle boy."
Teaching this one today to my granddaughter ❤️
This song has been in my head since 2010 and it’s just amazing. I had a dog that would bite our ankles like this cow dog.
I'm 50, and remember this from at least 45 years ago lol
Watching the whole playlist, and so far haven't heard a song I didn't remember.
Once when sesame aired this, Madeline Kahn appeared at the end and says--""that's one hard working dog! Wonder what his pay is?"
I hear this in my mind when I get a lot accomplished at work.
Now.... That's just one GOOD 'OL DOG!!!!
i like meatballs with noodles and i don't like grapefruits. xoxo
Thank God for dogs! Do they still have sheepdog-trials?
Every time I see a dog, any kind of dog, this song pops into my head.
A comment on a short from Narroway Homestead sent me here....
Are border collies the best sheep-herding dogs in the world?
this is one of my saturday night go to songs
I forgot about this episode of Sesame Street until right now.
Darn almost 40 plus years since I heard this
I always liked this one. Find myself singing it from time to time.
I wonder how many of those cows I ate part of.
Brings back memories.
Hahaha I totally forgot about this one until I clicked. Now I remember it again. Takes me back umpteen years to my childhood . Thanks for sharing
Ear worm is now been laid
I remember this song.
this blew my mind 30 years ago and still does
Just an A-merican cow dog 👌🏻
Was the dog a bortder collie
I think so!
Sure love that Border Collie.
@@pattimcmahan Me Too
I don't know. What makes you think that?
I sing this daily to my dogs - no lie - only they don't do anything for a living....
Now that's one good ol' dog!
FWIW, the original French poodle was bred as a retriever, that the furry coat was meant to buoy the dog up when plunging into water.
MsPandaRosa I'm sure our all Ay-merican cow dog ain't got nothing against Mmle. LA Retriever' being French an all. He probably likes them French fries to go along with his Le Big Mac. He is a cow dog, and that means burgers! The cow dog got taste, no merde about it.
Yup, that's true. You'd never think they were huntin' dogs to look at them nowadays, but there it is.
I don't think its a border collie. I think the song said he is a cow dog
I sing it to my Spaniel most days!
This can count as a hip hop and r&b song
Get Timbaland or Nas to do their interpretation of it, and I'd listen!
I remember this one! ❤💥❤💥❤
I too, am a hard workin dog
Good old country classic
This dog is not a welfare dog. He earns his keep.
And you weenie boy troll Sesame Street videos about dogs. Earning you keep big guy?
This song just popped in my head
I'm a hard-working dog.
Classic!!!
Aw man memories.
are these australian shepherds with tails? they sure look like it.
Border Collies
Because he locked like one
i fucking love this shit
love it!
It's been a long while!!!!
Border Collie!!!

Brian Setzer needs to add this one to his playlist lol 🤘
It seems he also directed the "Mad Painter" and "Milk" short films as well!
I originally saw the shortened version of this in "Sing, Hoot & Howl." Soon I saw the full version in an episode of "Sesame Street."
So where is this? Idaho? Montana? Wyoming? Utah?
Sure like that pick up truck..😁
Played in the Piedmont style.
Dogs chasin cows ayyyyee!!!
