Am I the only one who gets a kick out of how they're using a saxophone for the sound effects throughout the making of saxophones? I swear the notes and tones are hilarious!
For many many years I was totally convinced that these were the actual sounds of the production process. It wasn’t till I was an adult watching this (recently, I’m 42 😆) that I realized it was two saxophonists dubbed over the footage!! I still cherish the memories of coming home from elementary school in rural Oregon those many many years ago to watch Mr Roger’s Neighborhood. What good times.
Man it has been too long! I was born in 81 and I remember this and now after all these years the sound effects were played by a saxophonist. I'm in the Navy now and everyone was staring at me when I watched this on my break because I was laughing so hard at the honks and hoots. Thanks for the post!
There are a few memories from my childhood that I still remember so vividly, like it was yesterday... this is one. I think of it often, and even tried to explain it to my wife a few days ago, though she didn't remember it. Ahhh, the wonders of youtube.... thanks for posting.
I've always was a music aficionado even when I was a little guy. I especially loved (and still do) when the guy at the end is blowing all those sweet blues riffs.
+BuddyBoy600alt Well, I'm not sure that was him yelling it out at the end. There's no way to tell. As for his playing, he's not quite on par with Kenny G., but pretty good.
This and Mr Rogers "how people make" on picture picture were my How it's Made before How It's Made existed. I saw people making some type of instrument on How It's Made just now, A flute I think and made me think of this clip.
I remember this made me feel very uncomfortable while watching it, which is probably why I don’t care much for brass instruments. (Yes I know saxophones are a woodwind instrument, but they’re still made of brass.)
Doubt it as lacquer is sprayed on horns. More than likely its a chromic acid dip to clean & brighten the brass prior to spraying. Not done anymore due to the poisonous nature of chromic acid, but probably still done in Mexico where these clips lookied to be filmed.
1:14 - For a while, I thought those saxophones were being dipped in water to cool them off after being welded together. But now I realize when they come out, they're all gold and shiny. So that's some kind of gold coating for them?
I knew I wasn't dreaming! I remember when I was a kid watching Sesame Street, this was one of the segments in one of the episodes! Ty for uploading this gem!
I always enjoyed watching the different factory clips, it's too bad SS doesn't show these anymore. its amazing how much work goes into making these instruments. When my brother and I were kids we thought he was dipping them in soda at 1:16! Thanx for posting this! :D !
That makes 2 of us. Granted, it wasn't as half as scary as the infamous I-Beam of Doom. By the same token, I wonder what saxophone part that is and what's the purpose of it spinning around like that
Seeing a video on how the clarinet was made, and I wish they had a video on how the flute was made. (I don't know why they picked the saxophone only where they should have made a lot of Sesame Street skits where a lot of musical instruments are made).
Yeah, I think that's supposed to be some kind of liquid to give the saxophones their gold-like shine. I dunno what it's called that the saxophones were being dipped in.
hoots the owl say wow you got a saxophone factory that would be funny hoots goes can I jam with you with my sax do some jazz some blues saxophone man say go ahead
That is my Dad he was the quality assurance man at the factory. Every single instrument was played by him before it left the factory. He was a very talented musician. He played all woodwind and brass instruments..
There are many comments like that. It's the same for me. How bizarre. They must have done something pretty incredible for kids like me to remember something so clearly from 30 years ago
*Add my name to the list. I watched this as a child growing up in Canada in the early/mid-80s, but moved to the UK aged seven in 1989. One of the few memories I have of my time in Canada.*
Sorry to ruin your childhood memories....but he's not really playing what you hear. As a sax player I can just tell by looking at his fingers moving, on the wrong notes.

Wow! I played alto saxophone in junior high band, and loved it, but had no idea how they are manufactured. I remember so many classic segments, but this one got by me...
