You dismissed the Alvarez shown for $600, but did you see that it was a Yairi? For someone who I've noticed is into the Japanese guitars, I was surprised you didn't at least pick it up and inspect it. In case you didn't know, Yairi guitars are handmade and sold in the U.S. under the Alvarez name. They are NOT made BY Alvarez, they are made FOR Alvarez. If that guitar was in good shape, it was a great deal.

What is it with used private music merchants and their prices?? There seldom is a day I don't view the used music section on CL or similar that I'm not shaking my head at all the listings. 99.9% of those that list used gear ask full retail for it. If I'm gonna pay full used retail, I want to know that I have some warranty and customer protection.. If I purchase a used MIM strat from a retailer, at the very LEAST know I have some protection in case their is an unknown defect, or for whatever reason the gear doesn't work for me. With private sales (either CL or like the dealers in this flea market video) when you buy something and walk away, the transaction is final... IMO, CL, flea markets and yard sales are intended to give a REAL used deal/price on a product. If your gonna ask full retail, rent some space and hang a sign..... geesh.....
I can certainly understand asking the retail prices. I'd do the same, maybe with a slight discount, and go from there on the haggling. Sometimes it just depends on how much you have invested in something.
You have to consider the situation. When I price things for a garage sale or on Reverb I put it at full used price but make it clear I'm negotiable. Both parties know the difference between a fair offer and a low ball. In a flea market or yard sale and even in a brick and mortar store, as a buyer, you need to try to get a better price. If you think they are too high offer what you are willing to pay. They probably will say no, but they could say yes. Heck, even my sweetwater rep knows that I'm going to request he offer me his best price he can sell an item to me before I make a purchase and nine times out of ten he comes down. You tell them that you can order it elsewhere for the same price and that you want it for less to entice you into buying their gear. Simple.
@@TheGuitologist Correct... and that is why 99% of stuff you see on CL usually ends up being sold to Music Go Round or Guitar Center for 50% of used retail. The Internet at least has provided an easy shopping guide as to true value. It's quite easy to surf out and view real prices guidelines.
@@SixString_J5 Music Go Round and Guitar Center already give you a base line for what they paid for it. I've sold enough gear to them over the years to understand their purchase formula. As a general rule, MGR and GC offer you 50% of used retail for an outright purchase. They give you 60% of used retail value if you are trading something towards one of their products.. So if you see a Gibson LP Standard in their shop's for $1700, they paid approximately $850 for it.. So you start your negotiations with that in mind........
Isn't that the truth! it's so hard to fight a stellar deal these days. But they can still be found. About 2 months ago, I bought a near mint condition 1965 L. Mozzani Classical Guitar, from facebook marketplace for $30. It was a an accidental find, I went to this guy in his early 80's house with my dad to help with a ladder that he was buying. The older gentleman and his wife were really nice and had a lot of nice things for sale in their garage, so I asked him if he had any musical instruments. After his wife reminded him that he had an old guitar, he went and found it. At first, I wasn't too impressed, it had old strings, was terribly out of tune, and needed adjustment along with being really dusty. I had no idea what it was, because I had never heard of Luigi Mozzani. However, it did sound nice, so I offered 30 and he thankfully accepted. I brought it home , cleaned it up, installed new strings and adjusted the action. Now it sounds and plays extremely well, plus it turns out that this guitar is fairly rare and worth at least $250, and I found one that sold for $700 on Italian Ebay. This was definitely a rare bargain find.
@@MarkSD Well actually I didn't. My Dad asked for me to help him pick up a ladder. He is the one who used the internet, I would never buy anything through Facebook Marketplace because it's mostly scams. I had an Electra (18:25) very similar to that but in a candy translucent red color. Unfortunately the neck joint was toast, absolutely no backbone in it and I don't think it was really repairable (I tried). I ended up giving it away to a friend and then he found a guy who wanted a cool guitar to hang on the wall. I've been wanting a solid body Electra now for ages (like their 1.5-cut LP style) and maybe I'll get one someday.
I'm wondering if I worked on that musicmaster bass... Back in 2015, someone brought me a musicmaster that was refinished in black primer, and I did a fret level on it and cut a black pearl pickguard for it. He picked it up from a flea market in Massachusetts. Dude went around to lots of flea markets looking for gear. Would have loved to seen the pickguard come off because I wrote on the back of it and would know for sure if that's the same bass!
Wow! Some of those prices made me realize how out of touch I am with the market! $600 for a stripped and modified musicmaster bass?!?!? I had one back in the day...it was a POS. original pickup was very weak. Some cool stuff at that flea market fer sure. You should give the blue eyed doggie its own channel..Always interesting ,thanks for the new video. Cheers!
That Tele toward the beginning was a Fender Telecaster Plus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Telecaster_Plus. Though the neck may have been aftermarket replacement. American made guit with lace pups for 550 ... I would if I had money or circumstances.
klaatu berada nicto. This phrase was used in a Sgt Bilko show about UFOs. It was picked up later for the film; for laughs or some other reason. The Bilko show is available on RUclips. Or did Bilko pick it up from the movie? Must check the dates.
Mel..Bilko got it from the movie. I believe the phrase is actually based on Esperanto...dunno what it's supposed to mean in that language..I could be wrong about that
I would have bought the loaded pickguard and parted it out to make a custom guitar. I do that.....but that Fender briefcase,though.... I would have snapped that up in one second. I've been looking for one.
@@contrabandjoe7974 I aplogise to you most sincerely since you are clearly an 'expert', I myself have worked in music shops and have had over 50 guitars/basses etc. and your opinion that I live not in North America is the only thing you have got right! I'd take a punt on you not being very successful at your game. Just sayin'.
Outside of this being just a really cool video, taking a trip with the guitologist and seeing the local deals and instruments floating around etc., I thought it was especially great and really really cool that you shared that art segment with us. Especiy The piece that you did show because it's relevant to your channel, to us your viewers and the world around us. if you have ANY more information on the artist, exhibit, or gallery I would love to look further into it to support the artist.
NVM I called and they were so friendly I described it and she took my number and went downstairs to get the artist's name and and then call me back with it. How about that.
I think the art piece at the end is interesting because it doesn't only apply to the stuff we throw away but to gearheads as well (to a certain extent). Having a couple of guitars for example can be really handy if you play different genres or need different sounds. Having 5 Les Pauls because you like the look is basically wasting wood for your own little consumerist collection drive.
I think that Kay lap steel had an old P13 pick up in it. In LA they go for about what the guy was asking for the whole guitar. Every body wants a COODER caster out here. Those P13s are hard to find,
@20:46 I am with you 100% - I am definitely not a tree hugger either, but I recycle and reuse as much as I can. For me it's "respect for the environment" and just hating to see things wasted and thrown away - I am proud to say that is the way I was brought up. I put as much as I can into our recycling bin - glass, paper/cardboard, and numbered plastics (excl 6), then I sell scrap metal. Everything from drinks cans (aluminum), soup cans and coat hangers to car parts, iron pipes, and stripped appliances - the wiring I strip and sell separately. And of course plumbing. It doesn't net me much, but it's money I didn't have before - a couple of weeks ago I took in a 40gal water heater, a few bits of steel, a bucket of aluminum scrap and some extrusions and came out with $20.50. By the time I have put recyclables into the recycling bin, and set aside the metal to sell, it would take us (family of three) 4-6 months to fill our 96gal garbage wheelie bin!
The presumed Kay lap steel did have a "speedbump" pickup, so yeah, I think you're correct.....although I've never seen an 8-string Kay lap steel before.
Interesting video Brad. I noticed a Ross pedal behind the first booth of guitars you went to....where that Tenor Danelectro guitar was... If it was one of their original Compressor pedals that would be worth something?
Interesting, I've never seen a market like that geared towards guitars and other things music here in Alberta. I really dug the art gallery at the end too,...those we have! Finally, and I have to agree with many other comments from folks on here, that Brad, your daughter stole the show with her teddy bear!! I remember taking my nephew when he was 4 or 5 to a boat and sportsman show and just seeing things through his eyes was half the fun! Have a great weekend!
I am pretty sure that "Victrola is much different than an Edison machine. Kind of like VHS and BETA. Victrola is the most common form of records (78s) Edison records at least the first ones were very thick and I think IIRC the needle vibrated Up and down instead of side to side in the analog music reproduction. I had a nice victrola that was the vertical type rather than the consoul you found.
It used to be that when you went to flea markets and such the whole point was to get stuff at cheaper prices. Now a days the sellers always seem to just try and get full retail market value for their stuff.
Over in UK we have Richer Sounds who sell brand-new hi-fi at discount prices, nearly all the charity and second-hand shops use their prices. To annoy, I say so this is new and has warranty? If they bite I point out the obvious
I have a '70 Musicmaster bass just like the one in your video, except mine has a white pickguard and black pickup.. Did you know that the Musicmaster basses were built with guitar pickups? It's the same pickup that was used in the Musicmaster, Duo-sonic and Mustang guitars.. Nobody noticed because the six polepieces are hidden.. You probably knew already, but I figured I'd ask/tell you on the off chance that you didn't..
Seen you picked up the JOYO Sweet Baby pedal...beleive it or not...its made its way on my board Not too weak...not too dirty And get em for little to nothing Great classic sound
I had one of those analog delays back in the Seventies. I didn't like its sound - but the main issue with those is that dirt gets down in that switch and you can't turn 'em on and off. I suppose some contact cleaner would fix that though. Just a word of warning, to whom it may concern.
Ah the old Musicmaster. My first Fender back in 1973. Never really liked it, it didn't "ring" like the long scales especially with the strings of that time. Modern short scale bass strings sound a lot better now. Had it about a year while I saved up the deposit on a 4001 ... bit of a difference ;^) Oh yeah. I was quite surprised when I took the Musicmaster apart and found a 6-pole pickup in there.
it was a student model, and was fender's lowest priced bass. i bought my first musicmaster bass from a music store brand new in 1980 and it cost $89 us dollars with a really cheap vinyl covered paper case. so, you really can't compare it to a rickenbacker or a real fender p-bass or j-bass. but, it is a real usa-made fender bass manufactured in the fullerton plant so the quality and the stability is there, even if the design has an improperly-designated stratocaster guitar pickup and a crappy bridge. swap to a mustang bass bridge that you can properly tune and swap to an aftermarket 4-pole pickup and you end up with an amazing instrument that sounds like a p-bass but is easier to play. short-scale basses were always marketed to students so the costs were kept low to keep the instruments affordable, so the playability of the instruments was always good but the sound quality of the electronics was secondary.
The guy with the pickups had some great stuff! Always cool material. +1000 for the dog. My youngest, even at 9 would be just as enthusiastic with canine camera work.
That kind of money for vintage guitar pedals is crazy to me. As we all know, electronic parts don't get better when they get older. It might stop working anytime but at least you can open it up and try to fix it. But you can get the latest boutique stuff for 250!
Great video, Bradford. I wish we had cool stuff like the guitar swap meet and that vintage shop were you found the Celestion cab. The part of Florida where I live caters to tourism and consumer whoredom, so we don't have cool stuff like this. I enjoyed the art exhibit at the end, as well. The weirdness and diversity of your content make this one of my favorite channels, even though I still scream at the television when you work on anything solid state. Take care, Brother.
Yeah I remember they did the vintage Tweed brief cases for a while in the late '80's..thought they were cool but pricey..$35 is an absolute steal..would definitely snatched that up!
@@outthereassociates7155 Dan ...didn't remember them being that cheap .guess that brain cell has burned out! At the time I really didn't see the point to them other than just being kinda cool take on a vintage case. Different times and different values I guess. Respect!😋👏👍

Nice video Brad. I liked the art at the end of the video as well.
Thanks man! Yeah, I dug that piece too. Spoke to me.
We need you to make more videos like this and of you going to pawn shops and used guitar stores, they are very fun to watch!!!!
That tele would’ve been a steal. They go for double that on reverb. The tele plus is what Johnny greenwood from Radiohead is famous for playing.
Cheers!
I had a old musicmaster bass in 1967, I agree with your assesment, I swapped mine for a Dannelectro Base.
That Tele toward the beginning was a Fender Telecaster Plus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Telecaster_Plus. Though the neck may have been aftermarket replacement. American made guit with lace pups for 550 ... I would if I had money or circumstances.
Cool video, Brad. I like when you visit places and show us all. 👍
Thanks for takin’ us along!!
klaatu berada nicto. This phrase was used in a Sgt Bilko show about UFOs. It was picked up later for the film; for laughs or some other reason. The Bilko show is available on RUclips. Or did Bilko pick it up from the movie? Must check the dates.
And then Army of Darkness.
Mel..Bilko got it from the movie. I believe the phrase is actually based on Esperanto...dunno what it's supposed to mean in that language..I could be wrong about that
At 10:57 the microphone is an Astatic 200s, they make great harmonica mics. I think that tag said $40???? Definitely would have come home with me!
Hey Brad, it's so cute that your daughter is right there checking things out with you. Very Cool.
man i love these swap meet/pawn shop videos. Its such a famine for cool used stuff where I live
The Victrola is the best! If only I had been there to make a home for it. It was beautiful.
I would have bought the loaded pickguard and parted it out to make a custom guitar. I do that.....but that Fender briefcase,though.... I would have snapped that up in one second. I've been looking for one.
Thanks for another great video, Brad!
Nice one Brad: Nice reference to one of my favourite films also.... Klaatu Nicto Barada!
That MusicMaster was nice. Some nice bargains.
I did not see one bargain in this video.. I saw a bunch of dudes asking full blown shop retail.......
@@contrabandjoe7974 In your opinion.
@@tankthelord1178 42 years of musical instrument collecting/buying/selling is not an opinion.... You must not live in North America.......
@@tankthelord1178 Snowflake.....
Hell yeah, gear n beer! Love it, thanks for sharing Brad.
i keep watching just for that blue eye doggie hahaha
Outside of this being just a really cool video, taking a trip with the guitologist and seeing the local deals and instruments floating around etc., I thought it was especially great and really really cool that you shared that art segment with us. Especiy The piece that you did show because it's relevant to your channel, to us your viewers and the world around us. if you have ANY more information on the artist, exhibit, or gallery I would love to look further into it to support the artist.
NVM I called and they were so friendly I described it and she took my number and went downstairs to get the artist's name and and then call me back with it. How about that.
What was the artist name?
Zhang Hun
Pretty sure that Crosley radio was a repro, the originals were Fadas.
The presumed Kay lap steel did have a "speedbump" pickup, so yeah, I think you're correct.....although I've never seen an 8-string Kay lap steel before.
Best cameraperson
Great video. I'm sure with some of the pricing you were showing, Much of that stuff went back home with its seller.
Hah hah, your daughter is a riot!😁 That guy at the flea market had some very cool stuff (and he knew what it was worth for the most part).😉👍
Picked up a cool Norma Hollow Body last weekend..
Awesome. Those old Japanese basses are really players with a good setup.
really cool art installation - glad you included that!
That blue eyed stuff toy had me cracking up. 😄 👍
Had it about a year while I saved up the deposit on a 4001 ... bit of a difference ;^)
Oh yeah.
Love that Jag more than you seem to Greg. I’m in Indy right now so I might be able to get to that flea market.
Great video!!!! Hahahha my daughter does the same with her toys front to the cam hahaha... so cuted!! God bless You buddy!! ✌
The guy with the pickups had some great stuff!
Always cool material.
+1000 for the dog. My youngest, even at 9 would be just as enthusiastic with canine camera work.
13:58 We have a mics like that (Shure) and never thought Gort... 😂😅
"Gort....... Klaatu barada nikto"
Just watched that movie the other night.
3:16 i have one of those fx-17 wah pedals theyre awesome and sturdy.
Great video!
Very cool! I wish that we had something similar like this where I live.
I never knew fender made briefcases. Interesting.
My guess is they were dealer reward items for sales or something. Not sure.
Yeah I remember they did the vintage Tweed brief cases for a while in the late '80's..thought they were cool but pricey..$35 is an absolute steal..would definitely snatched that up!
Framus Burns-Hagstrom III I think I paid somewhere around $35 to $40 for my Tweed briefcase mid 80's.
@@outthereassociates7155 Dan ...didn't remember them being that cheap .guess that brain cell has burned out! At the time I really didn't see the point to them other than just being kinda cool take on a vintage case. Different times and different values I guess. Respect!😋👏👍
@@TheGuitologist Brad..nope they were available for a while to anybody that wanted them .had to order them though...I believe...
The daughter and the dog are easily the stars of the show whether they were supposed to be or not.
wow, Im from Elizabethtown and had to go to a wedding that weekend but wanted to go to the flea market.
Also…nice tenor playing and what is the music towards the end…very cool!
I have to say that customize bass vi looks pretty sweet but I would like if they put humbuckers in it and I don't get why I ain't nobody puts humbuckers in a bass vi
With the internet and how easy it is to see what stuff sells for, it's hard to find deals anymore. People always know exactly what they have :P
I really like the flea market videos thanks brother
