  • ROLI LUMI KEYS REVIEW
    I'm answering some of your questions in the comments "Where can I buy this?", "Can you see the staff when learning the songs?", "Is it worth it?".
    Search for ROLI LUMI on Reverb tidd.ly/3GJvHbE
    Main Camera amzn.to/3T9MWKB
    Video lights redir.love/HFgZersH
    I had the Roli Lumi keyboard for some months and I really like how it looks but there are so many aspects to it like the plunge of the keys, how it feels, and the Lumi app to learn to play the piano.
    🔥 LET'S GET TO 10K SUBS! 🔥 is.gd/WasabiSub
    The one and only official webpage for the LUMI Keys is playlumi.com/ I'm not associated with Roli in any way. This video is not sponsored or paid by any brand.
    ROLI's main selling point is that the LUMI keyboard is the perfect device to learn to play the piano.
    It comes with an app with hundreds of songs, from classical to popular.
    The app has interactive lessons on scales, chords, and playing techniques.
    The LUMI app can send signals to the LUMI keys to light up specific keys.
    So when you are watching a video lesson where they talk about a scale, the lights of the keyboard match what is being explained in the video.
    When you are learning a song, you can see which notes you have to play on the screen, and your keyboard, at the same time.
    Another cool thing about the LUMI keys is that it comes with magnetic connectors. This allows you to snap another ROLI LUMI keyboard on the side to use them as one single device and double the number of keys. On desktop computers, you can snap up to four LUMIs if you are using ROLI Studio Desktop. It is also compatible with other products of the company, called ROLI BLOCKS.
    This is my own review, my own opinions, I bought this with my money on Kickstarter. I was one of the first 1,000 backers. This is not a sponsored video and I have no connection with Roli.

    Thanks for putting this review together. I think it would be awesome if Roli sent you a full production model if they make any updates to the build quality. This still seems like the perfect way to keep my kids interested in learning music at their own pace and keep them exploring their own interest in music. I also hope to get a little learning from it as well. Even if it helps me learn how to read music and keep me entertained through the process I can see my self growing with it and possibly expanding my skill set.

    I really liked your review. I own a Yamaha Clavinova CLP 320. Also a Casio CT-S1. But both of them are not easily enough to bring with me wherever I go. So that's why I decided to buy two of LUMI Keys. To have at least 48 notes. Because I don't see how to play a music sheet with just 24 keys or notes.

    I have a Lumi. It’s worth depends upon being able to get a usable midi signal and trigger / gate pulse out of it, without a computer. I have tried to use it in a modular synth system with the Poly 2. I got 12V/octave CV but no trigger. The other problem is Roli thinks people want to buy their as yet undeveloped proprietary software. Not just an app, a whole system. Fail. All I need is a midi keyboard. I am returning.

    • @WasabiNoise
      @WasabiNoise  3 года назад

      Hey, I think the lessons on LUMI are really nice especially if you are starting from scratch.
      In my case, I used MIDI controllers for a long time without knowing much about music theory or playing. But a few years ago I learned a lot with an app called Playground Sessions. I'll copy/paste a comment I made on another video:
      I tried different software and I really liked "Playground Sessions" to start from zero, especially if you are interested in getting used to read music sheet. The software itself, at least on PC, was ugly and outdated (did it 2-3 years ago) but the method and the lessons really helped, especially the beginner and medium lessons and songs. I actually recorded a video of me talking about my experience learning piano (because I played guitar since teenage years) but I never posted it because I didn't like the video haha. But basically, I started with Playground Sessions and then used iPad Tido app to learn some songs (I focused on Classical Music).

    Knowing pre-orders are going up tomorrow, I really need to know. I am currently looking for a small midi keyboard for music production I can quickly grab, is not to bulky, doesnt have any knobs or whatever, but it'd be something I can quickly write down melodies with. Would this be the recommended item for that? I cannot seem to find midi keyboards in a similar form factor (i dont know any, do you know anything else?). In the end the question would be if it'd be a worthy purchase as addition to my studio?

    • @WasabiNoise
      @WasabiNoise  3 года назад +1

      It's small and it fits everywhere on the table. I do miss one or two knobs but it's really portable.
      If you don't want any knobs there's also the Arturia MicroLab. I don't own one and I think it's a little bit thicker, but I know some people that have it and they are happy with it. Other keyboards at that range/size have lots of knobs and pads, like the Akai MPK mini.
      I also love to use the LUMI with my iPad to record some melodies when I'm not on my computer. It's ideal because the LUMI can connect via Bluetooth with iPad/Mac. On PC you only have USB connection.

    So I watched all the Lumi preview videos ages ago. I just watched this vid and the your other vids (I subscribed). I'm not a music guy, but played a lot of Guitar Hero, and now have two kids 5 and 8. When I was a kid I had a Yahama keyboard toy and loved it. Yet I still can't really play Piano, one of my kids is learning Acoustic Guitar.
    So Lumi is not perfect, I don't really like subscriptions, the keys don't appear to be top glass in depths and plasticy ness etc. Also concerning some of the financials of Roli.
    But.... I'm still gonna pre-order this today, if I can and it actually launches! I probably spent this kind of money on Guitar Hero if I add up the cost of three guitars and drum kit over the year. I'm hopeful it can help get me, wife and kids learn to play Piano a bit more. Or at least get me more hooked on music. Roli's other gear also looks cool!
    I'm an Android / PC guy so hopefully the App is as good as the Apple one.

    The device sounds interesting, but if the keys are not standard size key dimensions, this device is not for me. i know they did this to make a more portable device.
    i have a regular ROLI Seaboard Rise product and is fun to play and dimensions are standard. I do admit the keys on the RISE are also unique far as trying to play the device.

    On the iPad, the keys in Cascade, Rainbow and Classic modes line up almost perfectly with the Lumi keys. However I don't have an iPad. If I hook my phone up to my 15 inch portable monitor do you think it will be as easy to follow despite the keys not lining up?

    • @WasabiNoise
      @WasabiNoise  3 года назад +1

      You get used to the colors of the keys. And when you learn the song in “wait mode” you only need the lights of the LUMI itself.
      About connecting an iPhone to an external monitor, I guess you’ll need an HDMI adapter, because AirPlay will introduce latency. I never tried it so I’m not sure this would work properly.

      Thanks for your reply. I'm on Android and the monitor connects via USB-C so no latency. I guess you're right that you're just looking for the colours

      With practice you just know which note is which. I think that's the lights are the best thing about the LUMI.
      I also got the new unit and it's more robust than the Kickstarter.

    Why doesn't it have an app for Mac or Windows? The quality seems very cheap.

    As someone looking to learn enough piano to write music, is this adequate? Would it be a lot better to get two and connect them?

      It depends on the kind of music you want to make. If you are going to use a DAW, and record MIDI, then edit the MIDI, you can do a lot with knowing music theory and a little keyboard.
