  • A trail of destruction is left by an electrical storm in County Leitrim.
The road between Ballinaglera and Ballinamore in County Leitrim has been made virtually impassable as a result of a landslide caused by electrical storms. Hundreds of tonnes of mud and turf came tumbling down from the Sliabh an Iarainn mountain range destroying crops, obliterating land divisions and causing havoc in the local communities.
Some local people describe how the damage has caused chaos for the local community.
Nobody was injured by the landslide but many had miraculous escapes.
As a result of the landslide the nearby Yellow River broke its banks resulting in flooding and destruction.
The transport and communication difficulties created in the area are obvious.
One of the oldest men in the parish, Phil McGourty says he has never before witnessed such destruction. Another local man Michael Wynne witnessed his flock of sheep being taken away by the flood.
While most areas in the country affected by the storm are now back to normal, the same can not be said in County Leitrim.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 3 July 1986. The reporter is Tommie Gorman.

Electricial Storm Causes Landslide in Leitrim, Ireland 1986 0006AM 3.2.25 EIRE!! seems to have inclement weather fronts 24/7.... what kindda temperature range would the average irish person deem a barmy summer day?

Temperatures about 24 C are unusual and even that is not guaranteed. The record is 33 C, set back about 1875 and it came close to being broken in 2018 but remains. Warm spells don't often last long, perhaps a day or two. Sometimes we might get a warm week and once a decade or so, get even longer spells. Two or three warm/hot spells during the summer would be considered a good summer.
As we say here, we had a good summer last year, it was on a Tuesday.
