When I confronted Eddie the first time with Nick, I, Nick and the Mysterious Stranger shot him at the same time.
His own personal case was closed with the help of another case, cool.
I thought that was cool but I have forgotten that the mysterious stranger is another thing Nick is trying to solve which just made this whole thing even better:
*sexy guitar rifts*

Killing Eddie with the Power of ~*Friendship*~
Says killing a 200 year old crime boss is murder.
Slaughters hundreds of raiders without a thought.
Martiellmo dues vult
Martiellmo Raiders ain't humans
Raiders aren't killed in cold blood, they are killed in self defense. They are a danger to the Sole Surviver and to innocent Commonwealth settlements. Eddie Winter, on the other hand, isn't currently a danger to anybody. Nick's theory that Eddie plans to come out of his shelter and take over again is just that, a theory. There's no way to know for sure what Eddie plans to do. Raiders, though, are a clear and present danger.
lol eddie said he wanted to get out to rule boston.
not sure why he didnt come out yet
Martiellmo raiders attack first even if you ignore them
The monologue Nick has at the end, when he's talking about the existential nightmare that is every moment of his life, was one of the deepest cutting video game moments I've experienced. The actor is incredible.
Nick is pretty much the best thing in Fallout 4.

@@Rainbow_Dash_of_Cloudsdale agreed, followed closely by Hancock, who I feel wasn't explored enough. A truly fun and complex character.

In my play-through, Nick one shot winter Since I equipped him a full modified .44 pistol. At the moment, I saw Nick pull out his pistol and then Winter's head got blew away just in a second. It's so cinematic and so cool, almost like a western movie.
I myself gave him a super sledge.... Eddie's body turned into red jello under 1 seconds

Riley Sandpaper How have you got this far in survival mode without the lone wanderer perk?
@Zesty Zucc it doesn’t I have no idea what I meant by the comment haha
I have to admit, that chap Nick Valentine has one of the greatest "before-the-kill" one liners in Fallout 4:
Eddie: "Christ, look at you, your not even alive"
"Guess im in good company, then"

This is a gem.
You use the word “fingered” to loosely
I was thinking the same thing
And you misused the word "to", so I guess we all have faults.
I mean in the context it works. It can mean to identify as responsible for wrongdoing or a crime, especially to the police: fingered the sales clerk as the thief.
b. To identify or designate as being responsible
So the usage checks out
thank gawd i am not the only one who got hung up on that
"Fingered" hasn't always meant what it does now. It also means to accuse someone of doing something or ratting someone out.
I guess you could say Nick has some... _Old World Blues_.
Moonlit Ghost that was my fav. The biolgical unit and the juke box had sexy voices. Dose the juke box have a blues modules or im just being an idiot.

There were Old World Blues, and New World Hope. And hope ruled the day in the Wastes.
I find it hilarious that the Sole Survivor lectures Nick about basically using her as an accomplice to murder Eddie Winter for something that happened 200 years ago, when she herself used NICK as an accomplice to murder Kellogg for something that happened 60 years ago. Sole Survivor, please look yourself in the mirror.
ScarletImp2113 Thing is though, Eddie hasn't committed a crime for over 200 years, he has also been pardoned for ratting out other criminals. Meanwhile, Kellog is still commiting crimes, and has not been pardoned for his former crimes. Basically, Eddie has redeemed himself, Kellog hasn't.
@Zach Antes -- You make a valid point. Still, Eddie's redemption and not-killing-anyone-ever-again for the next 200 years didn't stop Nick from wanting to kill him.
ScarletImp2113 Yes, but Nick is a detective, he is supposed to follow due process. If Eddie Winter has been granted immunity then he is no longer considered a criminal. Unless he commits another crime, he is still considered a free man, he is not guilty of any crimes in the eyes of the law. Meanwhile, if Nick kills Eddie, Nick then becomes a criminal.
To add to your point, @Zach Antes -- the Sole Survivor ISN'T a detective, so he/she doesn't really have to follow due process. That burden is lifted slightly. Another thing I just realized was that I had no idea Eddie was actually ratting out his own crew in the holotapes. I'm so dense. xD
Lone survivor looks in the mirror.
"War, war never changes".
Nick's voice acting is so great.
@Grim reaper i mean they are the same voice actor, Bethesda didnt have enough to pay the wage for each npc so fallout voice actors were used. Nicks voice was used on so many npc's its crazy. But oh well skyrim is godly
Only Morgan Freeman's voice could be better
My favorite line in the game: "Ashes go home. ERIN MISSES YOU"
It's Humphrey Bogart.
YOUR IN FOR IT NOW
Nick: "This rifle of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! Take this! My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow! SHINING LASER!"
G Gundam! Cool!
"Get over yourself, it aint always about YOU." Damn. Nick broke the 4th wall a little bit there.

This is a clear reference the the real life whitey burger from south Boston
I like the references to actual boston crime figures and situations. Howie Winter, Johnny Martorano, North vs south relations, etc. I think that's cool they took the time to do it.
Eddie Winters was also based on Whitey Bulger who was on the run for a long time before being caught
@@rayray6490he’s named after Howie Winter tho
Have you ever explored the relationship between Eddies last holotape, the one in the bunker, to fan theories about who/how the bombs got dropped? "His informant" told him they were coming, but clearly Eddie was working with/for the Federal Government, sums arms dealers, Russians etc, so who told him? How did they know? Does that play into the hurried pace of the Sanctuary Vault rep and his seeming to anticipate the bombs?
Why is Vault 76 full when the bombs go off?
Or maybe it was his gut feeling
This might be a leap in logic but it might be he saw this in a dream or a trip I live in Albuquerque New Mexico and I’ve heard of people dreaming mount Taylor erupting
Vault 76 was full at the drop of the bombs because it has no experiment, but it was not exactly a control vault. It contained the best and brightest West Virginians for the purpose of releasing them 25 years later and reclaiming the Appalachian Wasteland using the C.A.M.P. technology.
...unless that mention of Vault 76 was a typo.
He mentioned a Cloak and Dagger friend. What if that friend was Desmond from point lookout.
Jesus the in-game subtitles need a serious proofreading
I've played the whole game with them on, and yeah, there are a number of inaccuracies. She says Molly while the text reads Shamus is one of the more glaring ones, to be sure.

Long version, Eddie made a deal for immunity from prosecution in exchange for providing evidence against his criminal associates. Such bargains require that to be immune, one must confess those crimes which one would otherwise be held accountable for. Now, due to the minor matter of the end of civilisation as we know it in 2077, none of Eddie's associates was ever brought to trial, let alone to justice, the deal with the authorities is rendered null and void. That being the case, the fact that Eddie has confessed to crimes up to and including 1st degree murder (on which there is no statute of limitations) makes him a fugitive from justice and it is a citizen's _duty_ to aid in his apprehention, so when he pulls a gun he is killed resisting arrest. All legal and above board. Moral quandries, none.
Short version. Killing Eddie isn't murder, it's garbage disposal.
Man, this would've been a great dialogue option for a high-intelligence Nora. Considering she graduated from law school, she would've had enough knowledge of the pre-war legal system to come to that conclusion.
There's no government or law system there anyway. Who cares if his deal with some long-gone government was valid or not; that's entirely moot. Fallout is a world of kill or be killed, not of kill and go to prison.
Killing Eddie is not legal nor illegal. The morality of it, however, would only be loosely linked to the legality even if legality was a concept that existed in post-war Fallout.
Are you a lawyer?
Best comment on thread damn it
It would be awesome if you could find the real Nick Valentine as a ghoul. Like, the original Nick Valentine became a ghoul and met the synth Nick two-hundred years later.
East Muppet of the Weast it actually be a cool concept but because of lore, and how nick obtain nick's memories, that would require a death from the human nick. so sadly i don't think it would happen, unless bethesda calls some loop hole
East Muppet of the Weast Like, you find him somewhere near or in the Boston Common and he asks our Nick to just end his life because he feels he's about to go feral. It's a heartfelt talk between the two and a gunshot is heard. I would love to see that!
Only activates after the whole Eddie conundrum.
East Muppet of the Weast perfect
Synth Nick would have so much emotional trauma to go over.
Personally I think synth nick avenged real nick and his fiancé in this quest, nick's story makes me hate the institute more for having him (the robot) go through hell pretty much and I'm glad eddy finally got what's comming, much like the whole Cabot family will in my gameplay, in the end this is just giving me more a reason to shoot father on sight, Shawn or not Shawn
Wait until you destroy the Institute.
I personally agree with the choice to murder Eddie Winter. Based on the lore of this the guy had it coming. If someone had killed someone I cred about I would want revenge, even if it took 200 years to avenge the person.

I honestly don't understand how you can keep up with your release schedule.. Daily 30+ minute videos with good research, good script, fitting background footage and editing, you must work your ass out for your channel. I was a big fan of yours from the early days of wow machinima but this is somehow even more impressive.

I was wondering about that...
If the servers are still up then you can do it.
You do realize that computers in that universe r just basically big holotapes, right? They aren’t connected to WiFi or big networks because those don’t exist there.
Mister OMoney
Same as our computers were prior to the internet. Fallout terminals even use the same CL interface that DOS and Linux Bash use too
I think it was a cool story. I love how Nick is a good person and he did justice in my opinion. Eddie had it coming. Eddie deserved it.
"Get over yourself, it's not always about you."
This is Fallout 4, Nick. It kind of is all about us.
Hey Ox, could you make a video of essential lore for a roleplaying character who lived before the war? All the brands, all the news, etc... For Fallout 4 , and possibly the others!
I'll be honest here:
1) This was justice, long overdue. There is an old saying that applies here. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. It's pretty clear Winter was going to get back to business, and his crimes certainly had no statute of limitations in a legal sense. It was time to bring down the hammer.
2) This is what the Commonwealth has become. The only justice can be found at the muzzle of a gun for certain egregious crimes. Winter got his just desserts.
3) Sometimes closing a chapter is therapeutic. Valentine needed this to move one. He wasn't going to get it 200 years before; the bureaucracy of a federal government had stopped that one its tracks. Sometimes I think trying to get a bunch of gangsters leaves the door open for abuses, and one must be careful how to proceed. This was a case of when that can go wrong. Immunity when you proceed to commit the same crimes? There needs to be a point where you say 'no'.
Amen.
Mdr g pa lu
Sean Carroll I like your views on this subject and it got me thinking even if it wasn’t “his” memories, is easy to see how he views it, partly as avenging this woman in the past, and partly letting his mind rest. During your time with him he talks about being scared he’s going to lose memories as he ages , or a part of him because his mind is too full. The human brain is made to finish things, and if you don’t finish it the mind never lets it go, so all of Valentines unfinished cases, wearing away at his mind. Finishing the longest and most emotionally charged one he remembers, it has got to be a relief.
Anyone else feel the irony of an institute character berating someone else about the morality of murder?
Simon Golding what are you talking? They only killed people they had to!
Synths and People who live on the surface don't count.
the power armor was repping the institute with the paint job.

I wonder... did Winter ever come out of that bunker in the last 200 years? If not, then that sad sack just spent 2 centuries in a well furnished cell. A long wait for his Green Mile.
Some criminals wait decades on death row. Eddie got 200 years before he met his firing squad
Jesus when you put it like that, did eddy already serve his time then? A well furnished cell is still a cell after all and onto of that it was solitary confinement basicly, I absolutely think nick needed to kill eddy and eddy was just siting in purgatory anyways and if he left he wouldn't be a good to the commonwealth anyways so 🤷♀️ but the man did basicly serve 2 life sentences by the time he gets killed
@@darcismith7295Technically never did. He was let go for the information on other criminals related to his activities, which pissed off Nick Valentine to no end.

is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue... natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment. "

*wakes up inside the cryo chamber*
The man outside: THIS POD IS PERFECT FOR A MIRELURK DEN.
Dude, Im sorry for the 12 year old dirty mind but your choice of words for incriminating was absolutely hilarious.
I was really hoping you would speak of how Eddie Winter was based off the former Irish mob boss Whitey Bulgar and how almost all of what happens within this Quest is fairly close to what actually happened. Of course, Whitey didn't turn into a ghoul or go into hiding in a sub shop, but he did get away with the shit he did in Southie for many years because of the fact that he became in FBI informant.
Also Eddie's name is clearly a play on words of Whitey (since they sound very similar) and Winter was most likely derived from Whiteys gangs name which was "The Winter Hill Gang".
I'm not sure if anyone outside of Boston would really get the reference as hes really only infamous within Boston (seriously no one outside of the city knows who the fuck I'm talking about when I bring this up), but I still think this is such a cool detail to an equal great quest.
16:00 -16:40 reminds me of the story in the game SOMA since, the the main plot is around copying a mind and putting it into a robot 100 years later.

To be fair, the sole survivor is one of the few survivors from Eddie's time. Nobody else from that time is around to arrest him, try him, or sentence him. If he was caught in the 21st century he would have faced the death penalty or at the very least life in prison. I feel no guilt acting for the no longer surviving legal system.

It took me the longest time to figure out why they got rid of the karma system, but I realize this:
In fallout 4 nothing is so black and white, but rather everything is in shades of grey, the factions for instance, they each believe they are doing the right thing for the Commonwealth, yet there is no right answer.
I could just by typing this because I'm drunk, but I believe getting rid of the karma system ironically actually makes people think about what is the right or wrong thing to do.
Nah, you're a smart cookie. Don't doubt yourself.
Finally, someone that realizes that karma was stupid.
I actually never liked the karma system, for the simple fact that everyone’s morals are different, its hard to say whats “moral” and whats not, its all how the player views it.

how did the pre war Valentine die??
Königstiger in a freak fidget spinner incident
thats gotta kill man
Königstiger After the death of his fiance, the original Nick Valentine was referred to a place for grief counseling. My best guess is that it likely turned out to be a place for harvesting people's brains for study. Maybe they just scanned his brain and let him go on his merry way. But this is Fallout we're talking about, so I'm not optimistic about that.
ingasparrow and Lora Elstad have good points, but let's not forget the possibility that he was probably another victim of the Great War

In the world of Fallout, locked doors can not blow up. Always need code, key, terminal or bobby pin to open them.
Hey, does Nick's story kinda remind y'all of SOMA?
Somewhat yes
Actually yeah
Now you see, this is the level of storytelling that we complain Bethesda lacks somewhat nowadays. Valentine's questline is very well written, if only they put this much effort into the main story.
Oh shit its Matt
Nick Valentine's story...This is true character development. His voice actor made this even better! Nuff said!
Eddie Winter's name is an almost direct reference to Edgar Winter, infamous for his long, drawn-out song "Frankenstein". Fitting, for a man who creates his own monster that goes on to destroy him. Think about it. Eddie has Jennifer killed. In doing so, he sets off a chain reaction. Nick Valentine, distraught, donates himself to science. The CIT scientists scan and store Nick Valentine's brain on a hard drive. The Institute finds and uses that hard drive to upload Nick's brain into a Synth. The Synth called Nick Valentine goes on to kill Eddie Winter. If Eddie had let Jennifer live, it's possible she and Nick would have died in each other's arms as the bombs fell.
This really set valentine apart as my clear favorite companion in the game.
I can't wait until you do the Sierra Madre.
Masterful job as always Oxhorn, keep up the good work!
Aah ... Dead Money! Eddie wanted to “Begin Again” but Nick didn’t “Let Go!” And if we thought what was done to Christine (forcibly given someone else’s voice) was bad, Nick being given an entire new mechanical body and waking up in a chaotic wasteland is worse!
Eddie Winter was a serious piece of work. Involved with all manner of crimes, responsible for dozens if not hundreds of deaths directly or indirectly. Turned on the other mobsters, even his own family to stay out of jail. Used his girlfriend and implicated her in those holotapes. The man had no heart, no compassion, no remorse and was both literally and figuratively drenched in blood. And worse was he got away with it. I suppose you could argue that 210 years in a bunker would be punishment for a crime.. but is it really a punishment when you set it up yourself and could leave at any time?
No, the man had what was coming to him many times over. He wasn't repentant, he would and planned to do it all over again if he had the chance. Letting Nick gun down Eddie may have been vengance, but it was also justice, more than 200 years overdue.
Eddie Winter was inspired by Whitey Bulger, the former organized crime boss of the Winter Hill Gang of Boston. There's a great movie about him called "Black Mass".
Everytime the Sole Surviver talks, I remember the days when Bethesda had decent writers.
I wish that the real Nick Valentine was a ghoul and you could find them in the waste while with the Synth Nick
Im surprised nobody ever sems to point out the obvious real world parallels of Eddie Winter with Whitey Bulger (head of the Irish crime syndicate known as the Winter Hill Gang). The arrogance, befuddling evasion of authorities and having a finger in every underworld pie all scream Whitey to me. I believe he was finally discovered/apprehended during this games development, so it wouldve been very fresh in the devs minds.
ave true to caesar.
Bobby Comai lol
it's "KAISER"
Bobby Comai Note im not a feminist BUT I cant support them for useing women like freaking babby factory
the Were Dragon True, your comment makes more sense, also the Leigon are stupid, I mean, using cloth and metal against lasers and bullets, seriously?
Vriska Serket for the BROTHERHOOD!!!!!
Imagine someone making a movie out of this. It's an interesting story in itself, as well as giving an example as to why gamers get so attached to video game stories
Are you going to do the new vegas dlcs
"Eddie, it's me your old friend, Shamus McFUCKYOURSELF!" I just love that line in the entire game
This is suuuuuch a far stretch kinda but I was thinking when the days comes if fallout comes from its 76 ruins If the next single player will be in Chicago to have references to nick idk like I said FAR stretch and I know people talked about Chicago being a setting back in the fallout 3 and nv days
