    The park looks like a worthwhile place to visit and I liked some of the photos, the 35mm is very versatile. About the origin of the film being produced in the EU the odds are narrowed down to a few factories but the most likely are Orwo and Fomapan. Given the character it is possible that it is Fomapan Retropan 320.

      Thanks for the info! I'll pin this one for now until I have a more definitive answer!

    11:30 - I agree. I noticed there were almost no shadow/blacks in many of the images. I felt it was completely mid-tone and highlights. Good for post/darkroom flexibility, but rather flat out of the box. Great video!

    Really nice imagery. I love your composition skill in this series. The imagery is not cheesy, those people really try to live the period. The glass is excellent

    Man you could get some lovely shots of the exterior of the train. Could see myself going through a roll or two on it.

    8/15/21 The black and white photo seems to have a nice tonal range even with the indoor/outdoor shoots. The f1.8 lens seems to perform well for details and sharpness. Not a big Nikon fan, but seems you have a great combo for film photography. I like to see more pics from this part of Canada with all the historic places to photograph.

    Nice review, and shots.
    I just sold my F100 and eight G lenses. Fantastic camera, it never missed a shot, perfect exposures… but in the end it’s just too big and heavy for me to carry around.

    Nice!
    Is there a 35mm 1.8 d variant of that lens?

      There’s no 35mm 1.8d lens only the 35mm f2d. The good thing is the 2d is an outstanding lens and only marginally slower than the 1.8g with the added benefit of an aperture ring. I use mine on an F5 as well as FE and F3.

    Lovely photos! I personally prefer punchy films but always nice to see more films. I hope that at least the original manufacturer keeps making them. So neat that you know who your ancestors are, that town looks rad.
    I'm surprised the full frame 35 costs so much, I got the apsc version a few years ago and it's pretty affordable in comparison. Regardless looks a v solid Nikon F lens, there's a reason folk have used these for a long time huh

    Can I guess what the mystery camera is? :D
    I've been forcing myself to use the old 35/2.8 AF on my F100 these past few months. It's a difficult focal length for me. I hold the camera up, look through the viewfinder, and think I'm too far away. I need to be closer. I dunno why. With a 24-85 or the 24-120, I'll often rack the zoom out to 24mm and wish for wider. It's just a tough fixed focal length for me to get used to.
    Images did look quite flat, lacking a true black. A good film for digitizing, but I think I'd have to print with #5 paper or filter. Maybe better with portraiture, where I prefer lower contrast prints.

    Are there any rebate markings on the film? At 320ISO I would guess it to be Double-X. I’ve never shot it so I can’t directly compare

    Great work as always.
    I like the idea of getting both the 35mm and the 50mm lenses. Personally, I prefer 40mm lenses rather than 35mm, so that's what I go for. Especially my Canon EF 40mm f2.8 AF (pancake) lens and my Leica Summicron-C 40mm f-2 lens are favorites of mine. I know it's only a 5mm difference compared to 35mm lenses, but it just works for me.

    I’d definitely get both! Though I’d probably get a more affordable, older & softer lenses. As for “Ars Imago” being an Italian (Swiss) word it’d be long “I” and soft “g”. That’s my guess to be honest. Thanks for your hard work 🙏

    If i had to pick just the one, i'm in the 35mm lens camp, i find it a much more useable 'walking around lens' than 50mm; but then again i use the nikon 24-50mm zoom on my F80. I know what you mean about feeling weird as a guy on your own in tourist places, unless you go to a place that's very very family and kids orientated, it's usually only as weird as you make it.

    Ars Imago (latin - The Art of Memory) is an offshoot of Foma Bohemia. My best guess is that its just Fomapan 400 in a different package, which might explain the slightly flat indoor shots. Happy to be corrected on that if it is unusual/experimental/old stock.
    Personally I'm totally anti-rebranding. I'm not faintly interested in the box I put in the recycling, especially if that box costs me more than the same film in a standard box.
    Fort Edmonton looks fantastic, kitsch it might be but it obviously offers great opportunities.
    To a non-latin speaker like me I just know it as 'Arse Image'😊

    isn't Orwo UN74+ whilst rated by Orwo at 400, been tested as actually 320? Either way, I don't mind people rebranding as long as they aren't trying to hide it. the way I see it the bigger companies can see that the film community wants more options, and may get confident to bring on new emulsions and not discontinue them like fuji is doing.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 года назад

      While Ars Imago lists this film as a "product", it is not currently available. Likewise, Orwo 74+ is discontinued. Ars, known mostly for its Lab-Box effort, is far too small to be able to afford to actually manufacture film or paper, so its film is certainly a rebranded offering, when it is offered at all. Re the quibble over its nationality, Ars Imago is incorporated in Switzerland, but its primary business operation is near Rome, with an on-line retail operation and small retail store. If it has a retail store in Switzerland, it doesn't mention it.

    My best tip for any Nikon shooters is that the 35mm F1.8 DX works just fine on FX cameras, it's only like $200 CAD used and although it does vignette it is very minimal and if it bothers you, you can crop in to 4X5 which most of the FX DSLRs can do right in camera by setting image area but I have even shot it on my F100.
    Another great option is the 35mm F2 AFd which can be had for about $200 as well, I suspect the DX lens is optically based on but the 1/3 extra stop of aperture causes the vignetting to be just a little worse

    • @RickJohnson
      @RickJohnson 3 года назад +1

      I can confirm. I tried that 35mm DX lens on my D750 (FX) body. Corner sharpness isn't so great, either, IIRC.

    • @asmahism

      The F2d is an outstanding lens, it’s the “normal” in my trinity of lenses for my F5/F100. The other being 20mm 2.8d and 85 1.8d. I had the 16mm 2.8d but I hardly used it. Would love the 85 1.4d but it’s too expensive. I’ve been interested in some G lenses, have you used the 35mm 1.8g. On a film camera?

    • @darksquirel
      @darksquirel 3 года назад

      @@asmahism IIRC it had no issues but I no longer have the DX, it is a G lens so there is compatibility issued with older bodies that only have on lens aperture control but no issues on my F100

    • @SgtPnkks
      @SgtPnkks 2 года назад

      The dx works up to a point... You can get away with F5.6 maybe f8... But that hard vignetting really creeps into the corners quick

    The scenery you picked was essentially demanding being Shot in sharp contrast B&W Film. Color would be extremely out of place.
