this movie was my special interest in middle school, and i spent years in the newsies fandom on tumblr, dressing up as a newsie for halloween, and tucking all my hair up into a cap whenever i could. i never really had the tools to articulate exactly what resonated with me about this film, until a few years later i figured out i was a trans man. here's to newsies (1992) the most genderful movie ever made.

I also figured out much later that Newsies was very formative for the masc side of my gender-fluid identity. And my masc style- so much suspenders and vests and newsie caps!
Fun fact: In 7th grade we had an English class assignment where we would research a person from history and then give a presentation as that person (like an "autobiography") - I chose William Randolph Hearst specifically because of this movie. And then when I saw it on Broadway I was close enough to the stage that during "Seize the Day" they throw newspapers out into the audience and I caught one and still have it a decade later. They basically bought me out of my issues with it. (And now I also have a "newspaper" from Almost Famous on Broadway)
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who recognizes this FILM as the MASTERPIECE that it is. Jack Kelly will always be the role I most associate with Christian Bale (who is this "Batman" you speak of?). Everyone on the cast and crew knew he was destined to make it big

Good lord, I was also so in love with Spot Collins. My best friend and I would rent this movie and watch it on repeat, and when Spot came on the screen we'd squeal like school girls (we were school girls, we were 12) and pause so that we could gush about how much we loved him.

god this movie had me in a chokehold. i was so disappointed when i finally saw the other version and realized they'd cut david's part basically in half.
i saw newsies in 7th grade in school and it was both my organized labor awakening and my gay awakening. 10/10 all star movie
i maybe wrong, but as i recall there was a boy involved with the newsies strike named spot conlon. i don't remember if he was a newsie or just part of a group supporting the newsies, but I do remember it's mentioned that he wore pink suspenders. the latter part was a bit of an one joke among the newsies fandom in the time i was on that part of tumblr

omg biz, I love your channel, I’ve watched every essay (literally watched Midnight Mass bc of you and yes it was incredible - started Succession bc of your newest essay, not 100% on it but got through the first season).
I just have to tell you my 6th grade teacher was *obsessed* with the Newsies, made us watch it and then dress as Newsies and perform Seize the Day for the 6th grade talent show. I was among the “drummers”, we had empty coffee cans on twine hanging from our necks and random sticks or stick-like items for drumsticks and I can’t tell you why but we were all IN TO IT. We got dressed up, rubbed dirt on our cheeks, performed the song, got a standing ovation from the rest of the school and won the talent show. That movie and specifically that song are burned into my memory forever. (Also being in 6th grade and watching that movie gave little gay me A LOT of feelings).
Anyway, love your channel, love your work, can’t wait for more essays but definitely don’t hesitate to do more stuff like this if your inspire to. Hope you have a great weekend!

I watched that gd movie every year in middle school music class and it was the first movie I bought on the iTunes Store when I was 14. I did a first-person historical interpretation about the Newsies Strike as a Newsie when I was 15 that qualified me for the state history competition. I won a musical theater competition with the theoretical girl boss ballad, “Watch What Happens,” from the theoretical stage musical that doesn’t exist. I played a background Newsie and one of Medda’s chorus girls in a production of the said theoretical stage musical when I was 20 years old.
I still dearly dearly DEARLY love this film. Blood on Newsies Square?? A goddamn cinematic masterpiece.

I saw this movie in my orchestra class all the time after we did a recital and, hot take, its a better movie musical than Rent (the other movie they'd show us). It deserves to be watched by everyone, especially nowadays

I don't go in for this kind of media typically and have no intention of watching this movie but this was great, because it's honestly just nice to see someone this passionate about anything.
I was introduced to Newsies in 2002 (for some reason, had not run across it until then), when my drama teacher picked "Carryin' the Banner" for the group musical number for drama competition. I was not asked to participate and only found out about it when my friends were chatting about how much fun dance practice was, which was a serious bummer. I checked the video out at the library and watched it multiple times.

I was so Obsessed with this movie when it came out. I also got my sister hooked on it. It was so awesome how so many of them were recognizable names, or became recognizable after this. Spot did a lot of Tv roles and V/O work, Mush was in Mighty Ducks 2&3, Kid Blink was Trey Parker, Racetrack was Doogie Howser's best friend, three or four of the guys were on the Nick show Roundhouse, including Dominic Lucero (the guy at 9:22 who echoes 'The Best') who died young of Lymphoma, Davey was in BIG, and Les was the little brother in The Wizard.
They also filmed a movie of their own while they were making Newsies called 'Blood Drips on Newsies Square' which you can find on RUclips.
Also, technically, Hearst is in the movie, for about 5 seconds during the poker game, when Pulitzer pretends to strangle him.
If, theoretically, there was in fact other kinds of Newsies media i would, hypothetically, have only watched this other kind of media version and, in this totally imaginary world, I would ask you what is wrong with this other kind of media.

Ahh this was so cool! I really appreciate getting to learn about the actual history behind the movie! I absolutely adored Newsies growing up, and it wasn't until much, much later that I realized that a part of why I loved it so much was because this movie is just chock-a-block full of gender goals for me :D

When I was in fifth grade my family was visiting one of my dad's friends and as we were leaving he tried to pass some stuff onto us (basically stuff he was gonna throw away) and one of the things was the Newsies DVD. Little did he know that his trash would be my treasure
I first encountered Newsies because my grade school teacher loved and our little 12 year old selves sing a full choral arrangement of Seize the Day. So of course I had to watch the movie and damn if she (and Biz) weren't completely right.
Btw, one of the actors (I think Mush) uploaded some dope BTS footage a while ago - would definitely recommend checking it out
