I'm not a dhoni fan , but according to me dhoni did pretty well until he got out .. and the thing about strike rotation , actually he was always weak in rotating the strike if you dont believe me then please watch the video on dhoni made by cricket by jb .. in his final years of international cricket he was struggling to rotate strike in the middle overs , which led to outcomes which were not favourable to india .. and that is why indian team did not promote dhoni up the order , even though he had this big weakness of consuming dot balls he always used to make it up by hitting sixes and fours in the end .. but on the day of semifinal he couldn't and the indian team lost the match . it was decided by both of them although sachin was senior so dhoni had to follow his decision but dhoni decided to do that by his own as well , because yuvi went out on a duck in 2011 semifinal so knowing that yuvi was a bit nervous and one of the main batsmen for Indian team , dhoni had to come just after virat to stabilize the innings with gg so that when yuvi comes in to bat the situation would be in control and India won't loose their main batsmen in crucial overs because of sl spinner against which yuvi struggled .
I'm not a dhoni fan , but according to me dhoni did pretty well until he got out .. and the thing about strike rotation , actually he was always weak in rotating the strike if you dont believe me then please watch the video on dhoni made by cricket by jb .. in his final years of international cricket he was struggling to rotate strike in the middle overs , which led to outcomes which were not favourable to india .. and that is why indian team did not promote dhoni up the order , even though he had this big weakness of consuming dot balls he always used to make it up by hitting sixes and fours in the end .. but on the day of semifinal he couldn't and the indian team lost the match . If you want more proof that he always consumed more dot balls , check his career strike rate which is comparatively lower than what we think it should be considered his role of a finisher .. he was a terrific finisher but the dot balls reduced his strike rate , for perspective his strike rate was lower than Kohli and Rohit sharma who are top order players not finishers , everyone has a weakness but due to the sudden top order collapse the whole team got exposed . so what I'm trying to tell is dhoni tried to do his best to support jadeja , but rotating the strike was his weakness so he couldn't , but he tried to stay until the last to try and score quickly
Mistakes :- 1) 5/3 is criminal in a knockout game , you shouldn't be there especially in a knockout game
2) middle order :- you needed players like ajinkya rahane , ambati rayudu , Suresh Raina , in the middle order not Dinesh Karthik.

In reality the team lost because of their top order failure. If you remember correctly India v new Zealand in the round Robin game was a draw because of rain. But India also played against them in the warm-up match just before the tournament in which they lost and again it was because the top order was blown away by NZ bowlers. So it is evident that they just choked and weren't able to play the NZ swing bowlers.
