A captain's true contributions can be seen by the environment, team, and achievements that were there when he became captain, and the environment, team and achievements they left the team with when they left captaincy...
As long as he was there the Kohli's, Rohit's, Dhawan's, Jadeja's all blossomed albeit at the expense of some lost tournaments... That's why he passed on captaincy pretty soon to Virat so that he could improve on the foundation layers and make India the absolute number 1. But unfortunately Gabba, 2021 was when India hit peak and it's been a downfall ever since.
Like the guy is literally captaining a team mostly of inexperienced, out of form or players past their prime and winning trophies beating a god-level Gujarat team filled with quality!!
Probably Gautam Gambhir could've been another excellent captain, won a few trophies and passed on the baton to Kohli. But Dhoni did everything he could with his abilities, even though he was never a good test captain.

He was a good test captain, never lost a series till 2011. Won a series in New Zealand, drew in South Africa. People fail to realize in 2011 Eng series nine main players got injured, He had to go to Australia without Munaf and Zaheer, both his main pace attack. He got defensive after these two series, you should see his captaincy before that. He was aggressive, much more than other captains. Sourav Ganguly never had aggressive tactics the way Dhoni initially did
