Out of options, Ufthak leads his Waaagh! through the mysterious webway, to a place where kunnin’, sneakin’, and thinkin’ are the name of the game. A place with little truck for muscle and brawn - Commorragh, the Dark City.
Here, where kabals and haemonculus covens pump psychic viscera into the warp, Ufthak is thrown into gladiatorial combat and soon finds himself up against an archon who will stop at nothing to prove she deserves to rule the Dark City - even if it means bringing Commorragh down around her.
But the Drukhari are about to discover that while orks may be simple, very little about them is ever straightforward.
Written by Mike Brooks. Narrated by Harry Myers.

There was no heist, they fought a bunch of eldar and left. The ship they got was just an accidental escape route. Ufthak hated the ship for being too elfy and wants to get rid of it. The big gun on the ship broke after one shot. Overthinking warhammer is one thing, overthinking title of an ork book that isnt even fuckin spelled properly is another

So I feel like you guys missed the subtext of Ulfthak's opening chapter. He's being setup to fail by the Tech-Wagh Warboss. They are a tech-based warband but were sent to an Exodite World where there is no technology to speak of. Ulfthak is an up and coming boss and the Big Boss of the Waaagh is being a bit cunning and looking to chop off this latest upstart. Chasing the Drukhari into the Webway is a desperate gamble for Ulfthak because if he doesn't come back with some good Loot he is in deep trouble.

    • @Adeptusridiculous

No we all pretty much got that, except that doesnt really matter because 1) Ufthak at the start of the book is still too dumb to understand the set-up and only have very slight suspicion 2) drukhari gave them a good fight so mekboss or no mekboss he would still follow them into the dark city 3) ufthak's boss comes up for 15 minutes at the start and for 15 minutes at the end and instantly dies like a bitch so i dont think we missied anything really

I think the reason the Drukhari and Orks play so well together is they both show that degredation of culture that is the corner stone of 40k lore, only instead of humans its the original War in Heaven species. Specifically it shows how they each the two group arguably most changed since their inception have handled said change. The Orks seems to have found peace (in so many words) with themselves through the desire for fighting, while the Drukhari are just fearful and hate themselves but won't admit it to anyone out of misplaced pride.

I find it funny how similar they are.
      1. They like to go fast
      2. Hurting things that squeal is fun
      3. The strongest, most kunnin git is the biggest boss
      4. Going to the doctor sucks big time.
The only way they differ is that one wants to die gloriously, while the other does everything to avoid fate.

To answer "do orks get smarter as they get bigger?" That's exactly what krorks are! Orks didn't devolve from fighting for tens of thousands of years, they devolved because the War in Heaven was the most intense fight ever and nothing's matched that. The Great Crusade was intense enough to produce a handful of krorks, starting the War of the Beast.

If I may make a suggestion for future book clubs, if you'd like a faction that doesn't underestimate the orks, Outgunned by Denny Flowers is a pretty good Astra Aeronautica book about a propagandist following a fighter pilot in an air war against an ork warband, I'd revommend it

I believe that the older the ork get the smarter they get, a lot of orks just get smarter when they grow because the bigger you get the likelihood you survive, we've seen orks that aren't really big as other war bosses but more intelligent than them example are badruck, zodgrod and even tuska these orks aren't really that big but they're considerably smarter than other big orks

I’d say at some point, you should check out “Lukas the Trickster” it’s an amusing look into the space wolves from their resident master of shitfuckery. It isn’t a story of his wildest exploits (like dropping a tax delegation into a grox pen while they were in mating season) but it’s a pivotal story for a space wolf named character I think you guys would have a LOT of fun learning about.

    Vulkan Lives!
I got a theory, and this seems like a good place to vet it out. I think Vulkan will be the next primarch to return. He will be the warboss of an ork warban. After falling into the Warg energy with the beast, his mind melded with it and was reborn as a half ork, half man primarch. He is struggling with the ork mind saying "smash the punny git" and primarch mind saying "protect those who cannot protect themselves, for together we are strong" .
Imagine orks in power armor made by Vulkan.

Bro, I could write a better orc book with a more fitting name. If you're gonna name something "Da Big Dakka", they should have just had the focus be around a group of Orks looking for the biggest dakka ever and it's all an escalation until they find some planet sized Necron laser and shoot a sun or something.

I gotta HEAVILY disagree with the romance plot "coming out of nowhere" in the arena.
That was the payoff my dudes. The romance was hinted at throughout the book. They had a freaking anime moment where they accidentally held each others' hands and got all flustered about it for goodness' sakes.

Honest to god you guys need to figure out your reading schedules or take better notes. It’s taking so long for you to finish the books key details are being forgot.
    - Ufthak is pretty much screwed in the beginning cause he got set up to fail by the mechlord
    - snaggy is key to the whole access of the web way. The Grot boss narative gives him more character. Also if you hate him failing then you must have hated Pinky and the brain
-exactly how are you going to do a whole book on Ufthak taking over the Waagh? If it was done any other way Shy would be crying about Orks becoming hummies or knife ears.
I’m not saying Mike brooks is Hemingway, but it feels like every complaint you guys have about his books should be followed by a drax meme going over his head.

(Just finished DBD) I think Snaggi's entire point was to tell da Boffin about the link between Ufthak and his hammer so that they could more easily find him, even if that plan wasn't entirely successful.

Try Flesh and Steel by Guy Haley. Its a buddy cop murder mystery movie. You will learn of the life of nobles plus the enforcers as one of the duo is a rich nobleman's son who joins the enforcers. If the Adeptus Arbites are the FBI, the enforcers are local law enforcement. You will learn about some of the politics of adeptus mechanicus on non forge worlds as the other person of the duo is a hot tech priestess law enforcer. Both join forces on a case that spans both the local authorities and the adeptus mechanicus.

This book supports what I always assumed, that the Krorks didn't devolve into orks because of infighting, but because the war in heaven was the biggest fight in history z and when it ended there just wasn't enough violence on the galaxy to sustain their forms

There are a few things that was unnecessary in the book, and other things that felt semi forced in cuss the Writer is Mike Brooks. He has the tendency to include current day speak in his books.
(Dude literally made a insert Sargon of Akkad in one of the books 😅)
