- Shōgun Finale's MIND-BLOWING Ending EXPLAINED! 🤯 (Shocking Twists & Unanswered Questions REVEALED)
// VIDEO INFORMATION //
The show Shogun ended in a surprising way. The main characters, Toranaga and Blackthorne, both went through big changes.
Toranaga became the ruler of Japan by outsmarting his enemies. He used Blackthorne and sacrificed Mariko as part of his clever plan to gain power. Even though Toranaga won in the end, he felt sad and lonely because of everything he lost along the way.
Blackthorne started out selfish but learned to care about others. He was ready to die to protect the Japanese villagers. In the end, he rebuilt his ship with their help and found a new purpose in Japan.
A sad part was when Mariko died. This left Blackthorne and Toranaga very upset. Her death was a turning point that pushed them to make important decisions.
The episode had a hopeful ending with Blackthorne and the villagers working together. But it also left some questions unanswered about what would happen next.
Overall, the final episode showed that getting power and peace often requires hard choices and sacrifices. The characters had to say goodbye to their old lives while looking to the future.

I have read the book and the original 1980 miniseries. Although Fuji ( Fujiko in the book) died in the novel. She never died in the 1980 miniseries nor she became a nun. I think she changed her mind and later became Anjin-san's wife. She was becoming a Nun more so for her husband and son. Not just for Mariko-san. However Blackthorne didn't want her to leave him. So I think he wanted to show her a sailor's funeral. In which is believed by sailors that a person's soul and spirit will be around forever. By showing her this and together they buried her family and Mariko-san. She later decided to stay as his consort and perhaps later his wife. Because of this act. They moved on and became a couple. As for Toda Buntaro, he lost not only his wife but his father. So besides his son. He acknowledges Blackthorne as family. Great review. ❤
Thanks for sharing your comments and your love for the series. There’s a lot of unanswered questions I may do a video on that next
@@BEYONDPREMIERE you're welcome. Looking forward to it.
That would be a very happy ending if she become his wife as she is very unhappy and lonely and so is John Blackthorne so these two would be perfect together to share in their sorrow. But the ending is perfect already even though she decides to leave. Buntaro helping John Blackthorne is a perfect character arc for him as they become friends. Buntaro is actually a good man and great samurai but has a drinking problem otherwise Mariko would be very happy with him.
Toranaga wanted to be Shogun, but his plan would not have worked without his enemies coming after him first. They walked into his traps one by one.
Even Yabu 😩
I enjoyed the ending even though I wanted to see a big battle. Toronaga won not because he had a great army, but because he was great strategist. I also think he didn’t want to become Shogun, but he had to, in order to bring peace and stability to Japan.
He always wanted to be shogun. He explained to the start to the dying lord that everyone will attack him so they went with the 5 regions.
The same. After all that buildup to a nothing burger but I expected it. Last episode called Crimson Sky we only got 3 stroke samurai killed by an arrow and Mariko doing a spear dance only to trip and fall. Sorry but that doesn't cut it as Crimson Sky so figure this finale was gonna be a blah blah blah fest talking about the ending. Guess they ran outta budget.
@jonfreeman9682 well they actually stuck to the source material for that one although I would have liked a big bad ass battle at the end too
So was Omi the actual spy for Toranaga to check on Yabu?
“Why tell a dead man the future?” Ep 1 43:55
Now that I re-watch it, Omi facial expression did give a clue on that.
Omi was an amazing character. I think he may have been my favorite.
If you know the history, the book and the previous series, there is no need for the battle
Explaining a lot and telling the future by having yabushige ask is a very elegant way to convey the information, not the usual narrator at the end.
There is no need of course but it would be awesome if we got like the Battle of Helms Deep epic conclusion to Ishida.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the battle of Sekigahara would not have happened there, had Ishida (Ishido) not moved his army there. So it was a surprise that Tokugawa would mention it. I guess they just wanted to link the drama to history.
History will also show that after Sekigahara, Lady Yodo Ono (Ochiba) and her son will be spared. But only to suffer when he started to rebel against the Shogun.
In episode 1, we see why Ishido opposes Toranaga. He claims Toranaga has become too ambitious and will be a threat to the council and the heir. Toranaga lies and says he is content to just be lord of Kanto. And it turns out Ishido was right all along.
The viewer is lead to believe Toranaga is the victim of false accusations and is forced into a war he doesn't want. So the viewer roots for Toranaga and considers Ishido a villain. In the final episode it is exposed Toranaga wanted to seize power as shogun all along.
Such a masterpiece of a show 🤯
He's Daenrys.
All the while telling ppl he dislikes the word Shogun.
@@victorpradha9946he is Littlefinger if Littlefinger's plan worked. Danaerys went insane by the end, Toranaga never stopped scheming
Let's assume Ishido's motives were selfless. He wanted more power and would have killed the regents off one by one with puppets, at least until Ochiba married him. She grew to question Ishido and was already familiar with Toranaga. If Ishido could readily replace one or two regents, why not one step further? One day soon he might even remove the Heir. At least with Toranaga, she would get years of survival.
i’m glad i’m not the only one who had some issues with this production - i wonder if the writers read the notes that james clavell gave to the creators of the 1980’s series which i (re)watched alongside this series - as well as rereading the book - what was with the ending with blackthorne’s grandkids? what, was this all supposed to be a dream or memory- made no sense to us - my biggest gripe was the lack of time given to the relationship between mariko and anjin - and i mean the spiritual aspect not only the physical - in the book this was a major triangle of relationships: toranaga/mariko. toranaga/blackthorne. blackthorne/mariko - the first two were well developed, the last was like maybe 10 minutes? it was about a quarter of the book and in the ‘80s series their relationship was well developed- blackthorne was at her funeral and here he just slept through it -
Not confusing nor disappointing. Toranga sees everthing & Ishido only sees what he wants to see.
The main character in this retelling of Shogun is Lady Mariko. With her victory over Ishida in Crimson Sky, the trajectory of the remaining events has been settled. There is no need for us to see the armies clash. What we need to see is the fall-out of her victory in the lives of the people who were so intimately touched by her and her choices. And this the show nails. An excellent top-grade finish to an enthralling series.
👏👏👏
Thank you for saying what most of us feel. I'm just telling it like it is and am kinda disappointed there's no Crimson Sky or battle to end Ishida's reign. Episode 9 Crimson Sky had no no Crimson Sky so wasn't gonna fall for that again and predicted this would end with blah blah blah telling us the ending instead of showing us. It seems like they ran outta budget so went with a sitdown and talking about the ending instead. Well we can use our imagination. Still it wasn't all terrible but was hoping for more.
When they are pulling the ship out....is that Buntaro that comes to help? I thought he was killed by Yabushige stabbing him in the back by surprise during that big attack in the last episode.
Buntaro never went to Osaka as far as I'm aware. He was in Edo
@@ColtsFan288 Who was the guy that Blackthorne was happy to see come help pull the ropes?
@@supernoobsmith5718Buntaro.
So is "Crimson Sky" really Toranaga's plan to have Yabushige backstab him by letting in guards after sunset where Mariko would die, so Toranaga's made sure to have him perform Seppuku and be executed under the Sunset Crimson Sky?
🙂↕️ yeah pretty much haha crimson sky was always happening
The entire time I though honor was a big deal to all these ppl but guessing toronaga plan honor went out the window to me. Ones again we see power will break barriers and will push ppl to do things they never though they could. Power wins again.
Interesting, I took it as Crimson Sky was Mariko's death. If Yabu did not betray them, I suspect Toranaga would have faked her murder by bandits.
Crimson Sky was defeating "Ishido's Osaka" by defeating Ishido, distinguishing the Heir and Osaka from the bureaucratic Ishido. Without the marriage and Banner, Ishido's allies saw that while ruthless, Toranaga was probably the strongest Shōgun Japan could have had.
@@sonjamin2001 Toranaga knew Mariko would be dead once the Sunset, and so that's why he made it a point to execute Yabushige at Sunset as well because that is when his actions ultimately also killed Mariko. Or at least that is what was implied to me , but then the Crimson Sky would be Yabushige's execution under a crimson sky. Which is kind of dark considering Toranaga knew all along that multiple friends would be executed, killed and committing treason just so he could win the war. Unless "I Win" ...
Shogun is base on Japanese history of Tokugawa Ieyasu and William Adams. The show is 80% accurate. Tokugawa Ieyasu ushered in the Golden age of Japan the EDO PERIOD and William Adams became a merchant all over Asia and die a happy life in Japan with his wife and kids. He never returned to England. William Adams is also the only white gaijin Samurai with 2 swords given to him by Tokugawa. Tokugawa won the whole of Japan with the help of 5 naval canons.
Thank you
@@stevebubbie1126 I did not want to be picky. It still good.
I might be alone, but I think they setup season 2 perfectly. The first episode could open with nothing but all out war and ends with ishido 's head sticking out of ground. An entire episode for the entire insane battle. The following episodes tell a story of the direct aftermath of war and follow Blackburn a bit more.
Bro they ended the show, there will be no Season 2
Toranaga: Ima behead some villagers just to make it seem like someone destroyed his ship. Only because I like him and he makes me laugh :D
Hahahaha exactly my thoughts is insane 😅
terrible
And then he says he might tell him later. I hope not.
Kinda makes him the villain I didn't want him to be
@@TheCrenshaw1991 He has always been the villain. Just a much more intelligent, capable and competent one than his rivals
The last episode literally showed us how he used ppl to his goal. Heck, historically speaking, his character didn't have loyalty either as he switched service to a liege lord (Oda Nobunaga) who killed his current lord
I don't understand how Mariko dying benefited Toronaga.
Its a bittersweet last episode, i didnt like toranaga sacrificing everything left and right for his hidden goal and thinking of the anjin of a mere funny distraction. I would have liked to more of the battle and what happens next, an extra episode would be satisfying but i guess they left out the big battle in the books too.
For my personal taste the ending was a bit anticlimactic as everything leading up to it was quite grand.
So Anjin is what the court jester?
I also find it irritating how Toranaga knew everything, even things happening hundreds of miles away. Who was the spy reporting everything Yabushige did when he went to Osaka? It makes no sense.
Toranaga is basically Littlefinger who won
Sort off, except littlefinger had to crawl to the very top, while Toranaga was born there
Super subdued episode, but I loved it!!! I would love to have seen the final battle, but, like the 80's series a voice over/flash forward worked. I with they took a page from the 80's series and talked about the downfall of Ishido and how eventually got his head cut off. SMALL complaints, sad the series is over.
Yeah small changes here and there but the shows incredible
The ending killed the show. My god, never gonna recomend this show to anyone.
I'm with ya on that one. All that buildup and talking and chanting Crimson Sky only to get 3 stroke samurai killed by an arrow and Mariko doing a spear ballet and falling down doesn't cut it as Crimson Sky. Look I'm not expecting Battle of Helms Deep but the ending is just a blah blah blah fest of Toranaga talking about his plans and we're left to use our imagination. I'm guessing they ran outta budget.
Now I have to read the book. Much to like in the series but IMO the screenwriters not only dropped the ball, they fumbled inside the one yard line down 26-21 with time expiring.
You already know what happens in the battle. The chainshot will devastate anyone and anything in Japan at that point in time.
Can somebody explain if hier army wont be on the battlefield why would ishido loose cant he just attack the tornama army
Samurai series with no exceptional battle.
Hated it
I feel a lot of us were expecting a big battle 😞
@@stevebubbie1126There was no battle in the novels it was covered in about two pages, and in the 80s show John just monologues saying Toranaga won.
just watch a action movie 😂
@@cain7925 ok
MARIKO would improve bad reputation about your family, she used her death
Toranaga was so manipulative, he manipulated us to his side and he was the ultimate villain. He is no better than Yabushige. Now I see why Ishido and Lady Ochiba did not trust him.
Everyone is still trying to do the subvert expectations but they all fail miserably. This ending was 🫏
I'm irritated by how Mariko died. She literally said she would commit suicide, but to prevent her from becoming a martyr they decided to blow up a room she was in and made her a martyr?!! Also, she should have been blown to bits.
@@stevebubbie1126 I know she committed suicide.
OMI loyalty to TORANAGA because he knows IZU would be confiscaded about YABUSHIGUE disloyalty,
All of that to have it end that way!!! Terrible
I was expecting more tbh 😕
Just superb acting and attention to detail, but the ending is an opener for a second series....get it done this is so good not to !
10+ minute explainer on an ending that’s self explanatory LMAOOO. Ya’ll really are hopeless.
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, let's breakdown another profoundly disappointing finale to many of the so-called great series endings. Sadly, "Shogun," the finale to "Battlestar Galactica (2005), and the last episode of "Ozark," were even more examples of the producers dropping the ball.
This ending might actually be worse than GOT ending. At least GOT gave us an ending even if we didn't like it, If I could describe this show in one sentence: All build up no pay off. Doesn't matter if it's based on historical events or people already know how the battle goes it still would've been nice to see what happens or the aftermath of it. It's like making a show about the Titanic and never showing how it sank.
Noooo it didn't focus on the after math just the pointless 💩we tolerated under these barbarians playing at thrones
worst ending ever 😂😂😂
Liked the series. Hated the ending. There was no action. We want to see the results. The way we want to see a king on a throne, an emperor worshiped, a Roman general having their triumph....we want to see the Shogun actually in power. The ending was lifeless.
Yeah it was like meh 🫤
@@BEYONDPREMIERE They could have done more throughout as well. Blackthorne was weird, his expressions were odd. They could have expanded on his feelings for Mariko, they could worked his disassociating with his crew and culture more. More episodes were needed. I'll bet in the future we'll hear about budget constraints in regard to episode numbers. Should have been grander overall, like Marco Polo. That was a fun series.
How would that have been true to the source material?
@@roshi98 I don't know the source material. Never read the book, and never saw the original TV show.
@@supernoobsmith5718 I may do a video on it, there’s a lot of changes also..
Honestly, this was a pretty bad finale to a good show, that was a just too overhyped. Modern tech and greater cinematography just doesn't make a great show in comparision to the orig. from the 80ties. The "old" series looks a bit dated in comparision, but as I said, this is not making a great show great. Especially the acting was a lot better back then at least in my humble oppinion.
@@stevebubbie1126 Yes and as somebody who has seen the orig. show when it was released in the 80ies, I remember how devastating the death of Mariko was and in the new show I felt absolutely nothing. Mainly because of Anna Sawai has not the aura of Yoko Shimada and this togehter with the almost not existing secret love story. It even felt rushed and totally out of nowhere at the end of Ep. 9. As you already mentioned, the unexpected changes of the orig. story was a huge suprise and not a good one. It ruined the whole thing somehow imo.
@@stevebubbie1126 The main problem is the storytelling-team, because they made some unfortunate changes in comparision to the orig. story and show.
@@stevebubbie1126 A huge mistake imo after watching the complete show.
Absolutely disappointing, economical finale cheating without fight scene
The actual people Oshiba and her son are based on rebel against Toranaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu) and end up dead
