51 years ago, but the lives of almost every American have changed so much. I was 16 and something of a high school basketball 🏀 star. All of the events you included were big news for almost everyone. So many of those events that are still important today. Most Americans were on the same page 📄 back then even though we had differences. Most people don’t know that a Republican President signed the Clean Air Act, EPA and Earth Day into law. The future was bright for the U.S.A. and most people had hope in spite of our differences. The Vietnam war was the biggest dividing issue in this country. The war didn’t seem to improve no matter what was done. One of the biggest issues then was the draft. When a male turned 18 you had 30 days to go to the Selective Service office and register to be drafted. Old men in Congress sending young draftees into combat in a foreign country half way around the world caused a lot of protests such as Kent State. When those students were killed by National Guardsmen it started to turn the opinions about the Vietnam war. How could college students protesting the war get killed by fellow Americans? Another issue was desegregation. No more “separate but equal”. Black kids were bussed to white schools and white kids were bussed to black schools. I was bussed to a black school. Their school was newer and nicer than ours. They had a football stadium, we didn’t.

As a 16yo I met a girl in the summer of 1970. I remember the song "Spill The Wine" by Eric Burdon and War was playing all the time on the radio. Halter tops were really in and at the local beach all the girls wore them. Anyway, the girl lied to me about her age. She was only 12. But she was 12 going on 16 and I was 16 going on 12. So it worked as a "summer romance" and both our parents were ok with it. I was a smart nerd type but was good in sports and she was sort of the pretty slim girl slacker type (not a good student). We had such a great summer together. She overhauled my wardrobe as my parents would take us to the mall and give me a budget. We lasted for about 4 months but she literally changed my life. Although I went from an A to a D in physics after we broke up because I was depressed about it. Thank you Dianna!!! Hope you had a great life!!!!

PBS also began this year, though:
    1. Most of it's shows continued airing from NET, which is considered the very first incarnation of PBS and had the same stations
    2. The name NET was still alternatively used in broadcasts until around 1972 or so
    3. The famous "P-head" logo didn't exist until October 1971.
BTW, I was born in 1995, but my mom's one of Recollection Road's fans and got me interested in this channel, so apologies if I sound a little out of place. I consider this channel very educational history-wise.

It was also the year I attended my first NFL game at Tiger Stadium, watching the hometown Lions beat the Bears. Little did I know it was the beginning of more than 50 years of heartache and futility for me as a fan. Oh well. Being way into space I remember Apollo 13. We all thought they were goners. And Sabbath! I blew the left channel out of my old man's stereo with the Paranoid album. He wasn't impressed. I had to do extra chores like painting the fence and cleaning the gutters for a long time to pay that bill off. Janis was okay but I did love Hendrix. RIP Jimi, you are not forgotten.
