  • Yes I know this already exists on RUclips, but here's my recording of it anyway...right from the Channel Four testcard, through to the Channel Four ident at the other end. And 20 years of technical advice for the television trade in between!

You gotta love the Brits. I'm a Yank, but it has always enthralled me how much detail is given in the UK to the importance of anniversaries and watershed events in television, even to the entirely mundane like the Tuesday morning engineering announcements for commercial TV and radio seen here. If any equivalent were to exist here (and it wouldn't have, as the transmitter systems in the United States were always private ventures operated by the individual stations themselves), the last announcement would have gone out without any fanfare whatsoever.
I've watched many of these old videos, being the geek that I am, and it made me understand better how British television worked back in the analog days. I used to wonder how BBC1, BBC2, ITV, and Channel 4 were "tuned" to channels 1, 2, 3, and 4 without any interference... it all makes sense now!

12:28 This feature was repeated three weeks prior to the last Engineering Announcements. It was a feature on aerial maintenance that was made at Caldbeck in Cumbria.

I've certainly found IBA Engineering Announcements to be informative about British broadcasting prior to 1990.
Elswhere on this Tube of You is the Transcom promo that ran the week after this (timestamped for your convenience) - ruclips.net/video/dNCVa5IKo_8/видео.html

I would have been twenty when these announcements finished and grew up with IBA announcements, watching them when off sick from school. Obviously not at this point, at the beginning of my working life!
