  • By request ! All I have of the weekly IBA Trade announcements which used 'help' the tv trade, from 3/8/82, 15/11/83, 21/12/83, 22/10/85 and 29/10/85. The two drops in audio were as broadcast - re-assuring from the experts.

I've just sat and watched 14 minutes of 80s Engineering Announcement s. I make no apologies for this.

I used to watch as a kid marvelling at the place names (after not being able to reach the letterbox on the test card)

The latter IBA jingle was later used by Granada for their stripe idents (in a higher key)

They keep changing after a certain amount of time.

Did Northern Ireland not get Channel 4 at launch? England and Scotland were mentioned as seeing the Channel 4 launch advert, and of course Wales with S4C, but Northern Ireland wasn't included in the report.

Northern Ireland did get Channel 4 at launch - why it was not mentioned, I have no idea. Every region, except Wales of course, had at least one transmitter operating.

I thought that the transmitter at Divis was based in the Ulster region. It's interesting to note that no transmitters in the Border and Channel regions were equipped to receive Channel 4 at launch.

The Divis transmitter was on trade tests by August 1982 according to the first Engineering Announcement, so I imagine Channel 4 did go to Northern Ireland at launch.

Adding to that - Limavady was equipped for Channel 4 in August 1983 and Brougher Mountain in November 1983.
The last main station to go live with Channel 4 was Bressay on the Shetland Islands in November 1984.
Equipping the existing smaller relays took longer, and the last relay to be retrofitted with Channel 4 was Gunnislake in Devon, a relay of Caradon Hill, in December 1987.
