I'd say Sarge's War is very misunderstood with it's story telling. There's two different deeper themes here, one is a classic case of "growing up with your audience." . The green army and bravo Company getting destroyed, meaning life can throw a curveball at anytime with little to no warning, and we all will eventually be forced to grow up and move away from our comfort zones. Places of nostalgia from our past being revisited, being old, decerped, and almost unrecognizable. We don't always need to revisit "the good old days", as it can do more damage than good, and life was a lot more black and white, then. Sarge later goes on to kill Lord Malice, only to realize it was one of his best men. He was stuck in the past, unable to forgive Sarge of something he had no control over, but Sarge forgives Malice. Sarge was able to move on, represented by him passing by the molds of his fallen bravo Company. He's accepted life for what it's given him, and has moved on.
The second is the downfall of 3DO as a company. It starts off relatively the same, shooting tan baddies, going through portals, and having a good time with Bravo Company. Bravo Company represents the soul of the Army Men franchise as a whole. Murdered and killed off by bad corporate decisions, represented by Lord Malice. Sarge represents the heart of the devs and fanbase, who've grown up with the series/franchise. 3DO was already in the hole, and had been bought out by 2K, a merger of good and evil, green and tan. The devs of the game, under the new story writers weren't too happy with how Sarges war was turning out, and did their best to make it as good as it could be with the story they were given. The story writers were intentionally killing off the franchise, though the devs wanted to keep the creativity rolling. Obvioulsy this was going to be a shit show, and the game ironically tells us this by blowing everything we know and love into bite size peices of plastic. 2K knew we'd buy the game, they knew it would be a huge cash grab. Fast forward to when Sarge confronts Malice, or the devs and fanbase with nothing left confronting Malice or 2K, asking a simple "Why". Turns out it was one of sarges old friends, turned bad and blaming sarge for his downfall, similar to how 3DO blamed consumers for their consoles failure, and eventual downfall. Malice dies, along with old 3DO. Our childhood is done. Sarge passes by the molds of his fallen brothers, not realizing he could revive them, and moves on with his life, just like we, and the devs did. But there is still a small glimmer of hope that things could come back, even for a moment. There will always be hope.

This is a great interpretation of the story. Indeed, this game is very misunderstood and loved that they made this game more gritty and honest in its storytelling. I feel that this ending truly shows that war is heck as well and isn't simply fun and games anymore. The "plastic" soldiers aren't even protected from the trauma of war. Thanks for sharing you comment!

This was their last game creation of 3DO production since 2004, the other game like GTA San Andreas, Star Wars Battlefront, MGS 3, Halo 2, Doom 3, SWs Knights of the old Republic 2, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War, The legend of Zelda: Four swords adventures, Fallout Brotherhood of Steel, and Paper Mario: The thousand-year door were making better sales than 3DO. Ultimately, the 3DO production had no choice but, file a chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2003. The company's game brands and other intellectual properties were sold to rivals like Microsoft, Namco, Crave and Ubisoft, and also to founder Trip Hawkins, who paid $405,000 for rights to some old brands and the company's "Internet patent portfolio". Hawkins went on to found Digital Chocolate, a mobile-based gaming company. That was the end of 3DO and Army Men series. May they rest in peace.

So it has been said a few times already but the containers that had bravo teams's, viki's and Grimm's names indicates that the ones that were killed, were clones. I additionally read, I think it was on the wiki, that the story and cutscenes were actually done by 3DO before they went under and the other studio stepped in. So with that being said, I believe we were set up to receive another army men game that would possibly pick up on that last scene. There is also the fact that Alpha wolf squadron from Army men air attack 1 & 2 were not accounted for. So their statuses are unknown too. It sucks, but atm it seems unlikely we will get another sequel for the foreseeable future. One could hope though, and I have seen series that went longer without a new game come back so It's really just up too however owns the Army men IP.

I understand 3DO went down the drain, but this game is just depressing. There's no point. They should have left it with the happy ending after portal runner. Not just because of the depressing factor, but because it's not possible if the first and second games story were true. Plastro's army discovered the portals before the green nation and started bringing in these W.O.M.D.s however, they first discovered it AFTER Sarge was the Bravo command unit's leader. Sarge discovered the portals for the first time on behalf of the green nation after him and Grimm escaped Plastro's attack on their base in mission 1. He went through it after finding the spy in Mission 2 / bringing him out of the portal to interrogate him once mission 3 was done.
For "Sarge's War", the entire game is based on Sarge being a rookie who let his squad die and abandoned his commander when they were ambushed at an evac. point in the real world. Sarge was never in the real world as a rookie. If it happened in the plastic world at some point it would make sense, but the kitchen in the real world? No. Sarge was in the bathtub as the first green soldier to go through a portal.
Unless the tan already took Thick to the Garden or Scorch to the sandbox, which I doubt because they would have gotten plastered by the time Sarge found them, but even still - that's not Sarge as a rookie with other rookies under "Major Gooding". Cheap last sale to make everyone salty about the series ending with the moral of the story being revenge doesn't fill the void / war is hell and hell is for heroes.
Maybe they were really trying to just make it end off with any war results in both sides losing / war is dark and depressing stuff since the first two, portal runner, and air combat games kind of had a fun / kid friendly ring to it and wasn't graphic or anything; but, I think they just did it knowing they were going down so kill it for good in the event someone tries to buy the copyright or something and they can't destroy the series by changing it drastically. "If we can't profit / live off of making this no one else can take our work down the line and do it."
RIP 3DO. RIP Bravo company. RIP Colonel Grimm. RIP Vicki Grimm. Be at peace Sargent Hawk. You are sorely missed. Wish we could have seen them find peace and Sarge marry Vicki. Only one that got away from all of this would be Bridgette Blue. (Unless her prison cell was near the explosion, but I doubt it.)

If that's how it works in the plastic world though, there's no real consequence of death and the war would never stop.
Unless memories are wiped. Than sarge would lead a squad that doesn't know him and idk if he could even fall in love with a new vikki. That's like... the flash seeing the Earth 2 flash as his dad. Same body features in an identical sense, but totally different person.

It makes a lot of sense especially in Army Men RTS, where you build production centers and print out your Army men, vehicles and such out of molds, every different type of soldier has the same voice, looks and weapon. Makes a lot of sense out of simple game limitations.
I guess we could interpret Sarge, Grimm and the heroes along with the other unique characters to have been made from a special mold specifically to fill their roles.
Individualism doesn't appear to exist much in the Army Men world since everyone for the most part serves the color they were made to be, or in Malice and Colonel Blintz's case, converted, yet a hint of green still exists in them through their scars.

Unfortunately this game gets so much hate. Personally this is my favorite army men game. The story is dark and gritty but I think it actually fits well. I believe that what we play and see is how the kid who plays with these army men sees. We start off in sarges hero’s with a kid who just got his army men toys. He uses his endless imagination to creat a story and a world where anything can happen. Then sarges hero’s two where the kid is a little bit more mature. There’s a bit more violence and there’s a tad bit of a more mature tone. Then we get to sarges war. The kid is growing up. He glances at his army men with his teenage eyes. He starts to play and realizes he’s having a harder time using his imagination. He creates a world where it’s sarge and sarge alone with the tans. Therefore making it his war. It’s darker because he’s not a little kid anymore. Innocents has been lost. As sarge takes down malice, the kid puts down his toys. He packs them up and puts them away. Therefore officially ending, sarges story.

Never got to beat it back then.
But I was expecting at least a scene with blue soldiers like Bridget. She should've been there to at least comfort him at some point we all know she has the hots for him.
Also, where else could he go? He helped save the blue town in part 2 so it's not like they'd try and kill him. Who knows how many greens are even left? Blue town is his best bet for now.

Why this gets hate is because the story makes no sense. How could Sarge, when he was a rookie know about the portals and be in the other world. The story doesn't align with Sarge's Heros, not just this but other related things.

it seems like the VA was dubbed over last second as if Jim backed out, or the developers had intentions of bringing him back to voice the heroes, but something went wrong with the negotiations or something. It seems so odd that this is both a worse version of the story told by Army Men RTS and at the same time also a decent continuation of it with the concepts of molds being expanded on, especially with the implications left at the end that Sarge can just mold all of the green army once again.

I'll admit, I loved this game as a kid, but I know it's not a good game at all. They stripped the charm of the original for a serious cliche war story. The original games didn't take themselves seriously even the ww one. while this one and Major malfunction stained the franchise by killing off Hawk, making this story and all the others pointless.
HOWEVER, Malice was a cool fucking villain!

Ahh simple he explains at the end, war is bad. It killed my buddies and my girlfriend lol.
I laughed alot in this game, you'll be full of bullet holes just still lighting up the tan. Or they try to make a situation disturbing but I couldn't take it seriously because he will be like I can still smell burnt plastic.
The only time I felt bad for someone in this game is when they killed off every hero. I mean c'mon. They killed them off without giving them a cool death scene, or a last line. It's like they just finished reading game of thrones the red wedding and said hey let's do that but kill off literally every single hero leaving just sarge alive. Effectively ending the series after this game. Yeah that pissed almost every army men fan off.
That being said I actually like the games combat and environments. Just a bad story sadly. All of this just my opinion though... lol ;)

    • @DaimosZ
      @DaimosZ 5 лет назад +4

@@LoopyLongplays the game tries to be disturbing but honestly I think it's unintentionally hilarious. Right after the cutscene where Sarges team and Vikki all die, the level after features Sarge commenting how "The Fat Lady is here and she isn't gonna sing tonight". His mood just swung to a complete 180 after watching his girlfriend die in his arms. Lmao

Really boils my plastic balls that Major Malfunction had the gall do that prologue scene where a "sergeant hawk" model gets "melted in a microwave"... and then the game is nothing like the Army Men or Sarge's games... it's much worse. The Army Men series negative reception has more to do with being released in an unfortunate era of gaming rather than being "bad". Imagine if the idea didnt start until 2015... I feel it would have been much more successful.
